Re: Information about Mr. Chan Wing Yuen

January 27, 2003

Dear Sir:

It has come to our attention through media reports that a 70-year-old Hong Kong resident named Mr. Chan Wing Yuen was sentenced to a 7-year term for unfolding a banner on the side of a street leading to the airport in Yangon. The report also stated that officials from the Chinese Embassy in Yangon and local police attempted to coerce Mr. Chan into writing a statement to renounce his belief in Falun Gong, in exchange for his freedom.

Our organization has been established for the sole purpose of tracking the Chinese government's criminal conduct in its attempt to eradicate the spiritual practice of Falun Gong in China. We are also documenting any acts of persecution against Falun Gong practitioners outside the Chinese border. It is with this interest that I am writing to you to ascertain details of Mr. Chan's case. We respectfully ask for your help in verifying and providing the following information to us.

1) The date and place of Mr. Chan's arrest.

2) What did Mr. Chan do that precipitated his arrest?

3) Was his family notified about his arrest? If not, then why?

4) Was he offered the service of legal counsel or a public defense lawyer? If so, what is his name.

5) Who is the prosecutor in charge of this case?

6) Where and when was the trial held?

7) Was his family notified about the trial or present at the trial?

8) Which judge presided over the trial?

9) Is it true that Mr. Chan received a 7-year sentence?

10) Can you provide us with a copy of the trial records?

11) What is the reason that Mr. Chan was coerced into signing a statement to renounce Falun Gong?

12) Why does Mr. Chan's spiritual belief have anything to do with his sentence?

13) The names of officials from Chinese Embassy who were present at the time of coercion

14) The current health condition of Mr. Chan

15) Where is he currently held and how can one visit him?

We highly appreciate your help in obtaining information with regard to Mr. Chan.

It is our organization's responsibility to verify media reports and obtain first hand information about the case.

I appreciate your cooperation, and hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely

President
