A Falun Gong Practitioner's Letter to President Bush

October 06, 2002 |

The Honorable President Bush:

My friend Wang Chan, 39, was a graduate student and model employee of the general office of China People's Bank. He was a kindhearted person of high morality who always had a smile on his face. His integrity was well known among his colleagues. Because he wanted to be a good person and enjoy good health, he chose to believe in "Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance." Because he refused to give up his belief, he was arrested in his hometown of Jining City on August 21, 2002 and tortured to death. In order to force him to give up his belief in "Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance," the government also abducted his mother, who is in her sixties.

After I heard the tragic news I thought about his wife, who had been tortured into mental collapse, and their young child, who was left without parental care. When I called their home, hoping to help them, in just a few days their phone had been cut off by the government.

I cannot understand why a man in the prime of his life was murdered, leaving behind an ailing wife and young child, and their contact to the outside world cut off. Today, at a time when the world is constantly advancing, what is happening in this country that appears to be peaceful? Why were these people's basic human rights trampled and their lives shattered? It was just because they wanted to maintain their belief in "Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance."

If everyone truly believed in Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance, this world would have no wars, no assassinations, no biological weapons, and the tragedy of 9-11 would have never happened. People could live their lives without fear. What kind of environment do we have in a society without Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance?

In order to spread his hatred and persecution, no matter where Jiang Zemin goes, he forces the world to listen to him. During his visit to Iceland, under his pressure the Icelandic government denied entry to Falun Gong practitioners from all over the world at the airport, using a blacklist that he provided. During his visit to Germany, he pushed the German government to keep anyone wearing yellow clothing from his line of sight. The Cambodian government, under his pressure, extradited two United Nations refugees, Li Guojun and Zhang Xinyi, back to China. Isn't this and example of state-sponsored terrorism running rampant?

President Bush, as a man of honor and justice, I cannot imagine your feelings when you meet with him.

But fortunately, you have an opportunity to bring up the issue of the persecution of Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance to him face to face. You and your country have always safeguarded peacefulness and justice. I sincerely look forward to your help.

Sincerely,

Carmen Li, Canada
