Background Information
On July 6, Gerry Smith started a 330 hour round-the-clock vigil in front of the Ottawa Chinese Embassy. Gerry and people around the world were shocked by the horrific news of the torture deaths of 15 female practitioners in Wanjia Labour Camp, China. This vigil has been relayed by Bill Guan, and later by Jingyu Li, and is part of the global campaign "SOS: Rescue Falun Gong practitioners persecuted in China!"
Jingyu Li's vigil for her husband, Shenli Lin, began July 26. Shenli, a prisoner of conscience, was scheduled to be released on July 23 after 18 months of suffering in a Chinese labour camp for being a Falun Gong practitioner. But on that day, his term was extended for another 6 months with no reason given.
Falun Gong (a.k.a. Falun Dafa) is a peaceful meditation practice of mind and body based on Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. Since July 1999, Chinese president Jiang Zemin has engaged in a vicious persecution of the practice that has affected the lives of millions of families. At least 263 practitioners have died in custody.
