On the Lantern Festival Day of 2001, many practitioners flew balloons from their courtyards. Attached to the balloons were flyers bearing true stories of Falun Dafa and strips of paper with words like "Falun Dafa is good," and "Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance" written on them. Hundreds of these colorful balloons floated through the sky, creating a spectacular scene. When the balloons burst, the strips of paper fell to the ground. Pedestrians picked them up and passed them around to read.

Lately, policemen in a certain city have been visiting Dafa practitioners at home and spreading lies: "Falun Gong is going to have gatherings again. There is going to be riots... " Those words irritated the husband of one practitioner. He said to the policeman, "You be quiet. You are not allowed to badmouth Falun Gong in my home. Those practitioners are good people. Nowadays there are so many problems in our country. A huge number of workers lost their jobs. The farmers don't have a livelihood. Why don't you go take care of those issues instead of persecuting good people? You should use those bad words on President Jiang Zemin." The policeman said with a resigned tone, "Brother, I'm helpless. It is a job forced upon us by the higher authorities." The husband then told the policeman, "My wife practices Falun Gong. She is a person with high moral standards, even better than Lei Feng (a famous figure in China in the 60's who is often cited as an example of selflessness and community service). All the practitioners are good people, actually, the best people."
[China] Kind-Hearted Family Members of Dafa Practitioners
The husband of one practitioner does not practice Falun Dafa, but is quite sympathetic and supportive because he learned about the persecution of many practitioners. Around New Year's Day of 2001, when the practitioner went to Beijing to appeal for Dafa, he asked whether she had enough money with her for the trip. Later when the practitioner was detained, he didn't say a word to blame her.
Once two practitioners went to visit another practitioner. The latter gave them some money, saying that it represented the good intention of her husband. A few days ago, she had read an article from Clearwisdom Net with her husband. It was a family letter written by one of the two practitioners visiting her that day. Her husband was greatly touched by the benevolence and perseverance of Dafa practitioners who kept on practicing Dafa and speaking out the truth, even when they were forced to leave their homes and wander about. So he took out some money as support and encouragement. The practitioners were greatly moved. We are not asking for money. All we are hoping for is that kind-hearted people learn the truth and treasure their lives with righteous minds. This incident encouraged us to put in more effort in showing people the truth.

Dafa practitioner Liu Dongmei (female) is a foreign language teacher in Northeast University of Finance and Economy (NUFE). She posted a solemn statement on Clearwisdom Net declaring her determination in practicing Falun Dafa. The local authorities were furious with the heads of the university, giving strict orders for them to "straighten out the situation" and keep an eye on her. According to sources, the police followed Liu Dongmei for two days looking a chance to take her away. Currently, nobody knows the whereabouts of Liu. [Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province] University Associate Sent to Labor Camp
Dr. Zhang Qihu (male) is a lecturer at Xuzhou Teachers College. Because he handed out literature containing true stories of Falun Dafa, the Police Department in Xuzhou searched his home in January of 2001. He was detained at the detention center of Xuzhou for over 40 days and then sentenced to a labor camp for one and a half years. Xuzhou Teachers College negotiated with the police and reduced the sentence to three months of "supervised living," a type of house arrest. He was not allowed to be in contact with other people, and they wanted to "transform" him in this way. The Police Department in Xuzhou thought the "transformation" was a failure and sent Dr. Zhang to the labor camp in Yancheng in the middle of May. During the period that he was detained, they stopped paying his salary. His wife is studying in a university away from Xuzhou, and his relatives are now taking care of their 2-year-old baby. We hope that people in different communities of Xuzhou can urge the related government offices to release Dr. Zhang, so that he can go home to take care of his child and go back to teaching.
[Jimo City in Qingdao, Shandong Province] Persecutions of Dafa Practitioners
Dafa practitioner Wu Xianguo went to appeal in Beijing and was detained by the local police in October of 2000. On May 9, 2001, he was arrested and severely beaten for no apparent reason. Wu Xianguo has been transferred since then, and nobody knows his whereabouts. His wife Li Wenhua, also a practitioner, was arrested by a group of policemen headed by Liu Peng and detained in Tianheng Police Station in Jimo City. Li went on a hunger strike to protest the illegal arrest. Two days later, in spite of her weakness, the policemen dragged her to her home, broke into the house, and searched it. Later, they detained her at the local government office. She was able to escape but cannot go home. All this time, her two small children have been without their parents, and the younger child is only 3 years old.
Dafa practitioner Chen Wenshu was detained for 17 days for appealing in Beijing, once in December 1999 and again in March 2000. In total, she was fined 5,000 Yuan (Chinese dollars, the average monthly income of an urban worker is 500 Yuan). She was arrested in Qingdao on May 1, 2001 while validating Dafa. Her whereabouts since then are unknown.
Dafa practitioner Jiang Zhixiang was detained for a month and fined 14,000 Yuan for appealing in Beijing three times. Since then, her life has been often disturbed by unexpected police visits. She was forced to leave her home and wander about.
Dafa practitioner Chen Zhenhua was detained for 16 days and fined 3,000 Yuan for appealing in Beijing in December 1999. Chen went to appeal in Beijing again in March 2000 and was detained for 17 days and fined more than 4,000 Yuan. In April 2000, he was detained again for 15 days for practicing Falun Gong exercises with other practitioners. Chen went to appeal in Beijing in October 2000 again and was arrested. The local police were about to send Chen to labor camp when he escaped. Outrageously, the local police sent Chen's mother to the labor camp instead.
Dafa practitioners Li Deming and Li Deguang were detained for a month for appealing in Beijing. Since then, they have been constantly harassed by unexpected police visits. They have been forced to leave their home and wander about.
The police in Jimo city are rampantly searching for and arresting Dafa practitioners. We hope that practitioners will be careful and "face the evil people with righteous thoughts at all times. ...do not cooperate with the evil's demands, orders, or what it instigates." [Fengrun County in Tangshan, Hebei Province] Vicious Deeds Committed in the Brainwashing Class
Dafa practitioners illegally detained in the "transformation class" in Xiaobalizhuang of Fengrun County have been on a group hunger strike to resist the evil persecution. It is said that more than ten practitioners have been hospitalized from the force-feeding. Family members of the practitioners stepped forward to stop the lawless conduct of the police in the transformation class. There are more than 30 practitioners detained in the class, some for nearly a year. They are often beaten or tortured by the policemen, some to the point of losing consciousness and requiring hospitalization.
[Anhui Province] Persecution I Suffered While Detained in a Women's Labor Camp
I am a Falun Dafa practitioner. I was illegally detained in the Anhui Province Women Detention Center because I went to Beijing to appeal. During the detention, I was forced to work 18 hours a day. I was forbidden to do the Falun Gong exercises, study the Fa or share experiences with others. Later when we understood that we should not cooperate with the evil passively, we together asked the police to allow us to do exercises and study the Fa. We demanded that they set us free unconditionally and declare the innocence of Teacher and Dafa, and we stopped working. The police locked another practitioner and me in a small cell (they accused us of being the "leaders") and handcuffed us to the window. Our bodies were covered with mosquito bites, and for several days they did not allow us to sleep. Even when I got several hours of sleep, it was while I was still handcuffed. In the afternoon of the fourth day I suddenly passed out. After I came to, the vicious police handcuffed me for three more days. On the seventh day, the police questioned us, "Do you still want to practice Falun Gong?" We answered, "We cultivate Dafa firmly with our hearts unmoved."
[Changchun City, Jilin Province] Police Persecute Practitioners with New Tactics
After having exhausted all their means to persecute the Falun Dafa practitioners who refuse to be brainwashed, the Changchun police have found some doctors from mental hospitals in the name of psychiatric investigators to talk to these practitioners. They intend to persecute practitioners in new ways. Furthermore, the Erdao Substation of the Changchun City Police Station started large-scale arrests of Dafa practitioners on the evening of June 5, 2001.

[Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province] Practitioner Lou Min Detained in the Illegal Brainwashing Class
In the evening of June 4, Lou Min, retiree of Guangzhou Colored Metal Research Institute was forcibly taken away from his relative's home by Shahe Precinct Police of Guangzhou Tianhe Police Department and sent to the Sanshui brainwashing class of Guangzhou City.
Between 9 and 11 PM, more than 10 policemen besieged Luo Min's relatives locked home. The police department also ordered the heads of the security departments of the Luo's institute and the community committee to be present. They threatened that if her relatives did not open the door they would pry open the lock and break the window. They were also going to take away her relatives and their children (including those who are not practitioners) and charge them with disturbing social order and damaging public property, which mandates a 15 day detention. In order not to get his relatives involved, Luo Min opened the door, and she was taken away by the vicious police.
Currently, Luo Min is detained in a hostel near the Sanshui Labor Camp of Guangdong Province and forced to attend the brainwashing class. The monthly "tuition" is 14,000 Yuan, which is paid for by his institute. According to the instruction of the "610 office" (created by the government to deal specifically with issues related to Falun Gong) documents, if she is still not brainwashed, she will be sent to Sanshui Detention Center.
The head of the police department said to Luo Min that if she turns against Falun Gong, not only will she be set free, but also her pension will be reinstated (her pension has been suspended for half a year). She will also be able to go abroad to visit her children.
Luo Min was stopped at the Baiyun Airport last December, even though her visa and airline ticket were in place. The customs officer did not give any explanation and just said, "It is instructed from higher authorities." Having no other means of appeal, she went to Beijing last December. She was sent back to Guangzhou City and detained, and her pension has been suspended since then.

[Jingning, Gansu Province] News from Gansu Province
Zhang Wenxue is a male Dafa practitioner from Jingning County of Gansu Province. The police suspected him when truth-clarifying literature showed up in the county in November 2000, and he was illegally detained in mid-November. After Spring Festival of 2001, he was sent to Gansu First Labor Camp on a one and half year sentence. Two other practitioners were also sent to labor camps with him. Since the Spring Festival of 2001, the county started a movement of "everyone passes the examination," disrupting citizens' lives greatly.
Liu Zhiye, male, is a 1999 graduate of Lanzhou Medical College. He was illegally detained after the July 20th incident. At the end of 2000, he went to Beijing to appeal and was escorted back to Zhangye County of Gansu Province. In March 2001, he was illegally sent to the Gansu First Labor Camp.
Wang Pengfei and Wang Yong have also been sent to the Gansu First Labor Camp.
Han Xu and Wei Lifu are still being detained in Dashaping Detention Center of Chengguan District of Lanzhou City.
[Beijing] Police from Chaoyang District Kidnap Practitioners and Send Them to the Illegal Brainwashing Class
In the evening of May 24, Chen Bo, a policeman from Liulitun Police Substation of Chaoyang District of Beijing, together with the people from "610 office," used violence to carry practitioners Ma Guiying and Zhou Liying out of their home and send them to the transformation class. Meanwhile, Policeman Wu and others in the same manner took practitioners Jia Yuhua and Liu Zhenhua to the waiting police car and sent them to the transformation class. Liu Zhenhua's mother-in-law was in the emergency room at the time and needed him to be there to take care of her. Liu's family proposed to attend next class but they were refused.
At 4 am, on May 28, they were put into a police car from the brainwashing class. Their whereabouts are currently unknown.

[Zhengzhou City, Henan Province] Criminal Record of Director Guo of Bus Terminal Police Substation
At about 4 pm, December 31, 2000, bus terminal police substation of Zhengzhou City searched the bus from Zhengzhou to Changchun. They arrested 11 passengers for refusing to curse Master Li. Led by Director Guo they insulted and body-searched the passengers. In addition, Guo said that according the constitution, the police could kill anyone who refused to curse Master Li. When a passenger asked him which item of the constitution this was, he replied, "The first item of the first chapter." He first insisted when this ridiculous claim was disputed, and finally he was silent after everyone present objected.
The detained passengers were sent to the No. 27 detention center of the Zhengzhou Police Department. They confiscated about 150 Yuan worth of ticket fare from each passenger. They also beat the passengers repeatedly during the subsequent interrogations.
Each person had to submit 370 Yuan for food in the detention center. It did not matter whether he ate or not, or whether he was detained for one or two days. The fee was never returned. The food was just a steamed bun and small piece of salted vegetable, with a small amount of porridge.
[Beijing] Panjiayuan Police Substation Uses Kindergarten to Hold Illegal Brainwashing Class
Recently, the Panjiayuan Police Substation and the office of Panjiayuan residential committee started to use a kindergarten to hold an illegal brainwashing class and forcibly transform those practitioners who refused to write a "guarantee letter." They are currently holding the third class, with each class consisting of three practitioners. Every practitioner is monitored by a guard, and in the evening two people watch each practitioner. They constantly used force to arrest practitioners from their home or workplace, in the name of "chatting" with them. They promised to send the practitioners home after a talk. When they arrested the practitioners, they did not have any legal documents, nor did they show any ID. Once the practitioners were locked up in the brainwashing class, they lost all personal freedom. In the beginning, the police seemed to have a pleasant countenance. But once the practitioners refused their orders, they turned spiteful and often shouted at the practitioners. They humiliated the practitioners and slandered Dafa and Teacher. One security head even shouted "I will choke you to death!" During the third class, a female practitioner successfully escaped.
[Dalian City, Liaoning Province] Heshijian Police Substation Police Bai Tao and Others Illegally Arrest Dafa Practitioners
At 7 AM on March 3, 2001, Heshijian Police Substation Policeman Bai Tao called practitioner Wang Dan (pseudonym) and said that in ten minutes he would be at her home. Wang Dan did not want to be taken away, so she came downstairs and tried to escape, only to find that Bai Tao was waiting there in a car already. Upon seeing her coming out of the building, Bai Tao and three other policemen pushed and beat her. Wang Dan tried her best to struggle free and shouted, "What crimes did I commit? You are arresting innocent people!" At last she was thrown into the car. Wang's shouting woke up other residents nearby, and they all witnessed the illegal arrest.

Li Xiangdong, male, 36, was a former assistant at the Falun Dafa Shijiazhuang Assistance Center. The police arrested him at his home and took him away in the morning of May 29. His whereabouts are currently unknown. When his family went to the local police station to look for him, the police there denied any knowledge of Li Xiangdong's arrest.
[Dalian City, Liaoning Province] Police Arrest Falun Gong Practitioners Without Cause
Practitioners Wang Xingtian and Wu Jiying live in the township of Sanshibao near the city of Dalian, where they have owned and operated a private clothing business for the last seven years. After the Chinese government began to persecute Falun Gong, the two practitioners participated in activities to clarify the truth about Falun Gong to the local people. In the evening of May 19, several policemen from the Sanshibao Police Station arrested Wang Xingtian. They then took Wu Jiying away from her home under false pretenses in the afternoon of May 21. There is no one around now to care for their 14-year-old son and their clothing business. The two practitioners are both being detained at the Jinzhou District Detention Center.
Many people were present at the local market when the police went there to take away Wu Jiying. They all know that she is a good person and has broken no laws. Many of them openly questioned why she was arrested for simply being a good person and cultivating in the principles of "Truthfulness Benevolence Forbearance." At this time, more than 30 local female practitioners are detained in the Jinzhou District Detention Center, and the authorities refuse to allow their family members to visit them. Many of their families have been forced to pay tens of thousands of Yuan in heavy fines.
In addition, according to an employee of a certain provincial office to Beijing, several thousand practitioners are being detained in a number of detention centers in Beijing. Most of them have refused to tell the police their names and addresses.

[Chuzhou City, Anhui Province] Chuzhou Authorities Persecute Falun Gong Practitioners
After a large number of Falun Gong truth-clarifying flyers appeared in the city of Chuzhou, the local police arrested many practitioners and ransacked their homes. While conducting the arrests and home searches, the police routinely refused to show identification or search warrants. In addition, the Anhui Province Department Division has sent a special task force to Chuzhou to persecute local practitioners.
The vicious local policemen also punish the family members of the practitioners. If they could not find the practitioners that they were trying to arrest, the police would force their family members to look for them. The family members of those practitioners who still could not be located would then be fired from their jobs, forced to pay heavy fines, or constantly harassed.
In addition, the police have ordered that none of the practitioners could travel outside of Chuzhou. Anyone who does so would be placed on the "most wanted list." Many practitioners are still being detained in the city detention center.

[Dehui City, Jilin Province] Dehui Police Persecute Falun Gong Practitioners
The Dehui authorities have done a great deal to persecute local practitioners (Dehui is located near the city of Changchun). April is the busy planting season for the largely rural community, yet the officials decided to hold a brainwashing class for more than 20 practitioners. When the practitioners refused to be brainwashed, they were thrown into the local detention center. The husband of a female practitioner was forced to flee from his home. Because of that, she became a main target of the police. Her 70-something mother and teenager child were both severely beaten by the police when they tried to stop the police from taking her away. On May 1, several practitioners were arrested for simply standing on a street corner and talking to each other.
The practitioners held a group hunger strike to protest their illegal detention. Some practitioners were released after one practitioner was tortured to the point where she began to vomit blood. However, several other practitioners were still sent to labor camps without cause. Many practitioners have been forced to flee from their homes and wander the streets. Even the practitioner who was released after she began to vomit blood was arrested again several days later. Several policemen carried her from her sickbed and drove her to a nearby labor camp. She kept on vomiting blood during the entire trip. When they finally arrived at the labor camp, the labor camp officials refused to take her in after seeing how poor her health was. In spite of that, the local police still refused to release her and detained her at the Dehui Detention Center. She could not even keep any food down and kept vomiting blood for two whole days and nights. The police still refused to release her and told her family that they had to pay a 4,000 Yuan fine first. The practitioner was arrested in 1999 for going to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong and served a 1-year sentence at a labor camp in 2000. Her family has spent more than 10,000 Yuan because of that, and is in dire financial shape. In the end, the vicious policemen realized that the family was truly penniless, and finally released the practitioner. However, they have placed her under strict surveillance and are trying to force her family to move.
Two 50-something practitioners are still detained at the labor camp. They are both holding hunger strikes to protest their illegal detention. Practitioner Zhao Shishun, a farmer, was found to suffer from Hepatitis B and have injuries to his head. Regardless of these facts, the police still sent him to a labor camp.

Xue Yabin, a teacher, was first sent to a labor camp in 1999 and released after serving a 1-year sentence. He was arrested again in 2000 and has been sentenced to serve a 3-year sentence at a labor camp.
Sun Dawei was sentenced to a 1-year term at a labor camp in 1999. He has finished serving the original sentence, but is still detained at the labor camp because he refuses to give up practicing Falun Gong. His mother is hospitalized, but the police refuse to allow him to visit her.
Wang Hongtian was sentenced to serve time in a labor camp in 2000. He has finished serving the original term of sentence, but is still being detained at the labor camp for insisting on practicing Falun Gong. His wife, Wang Chunmei, has been forced to flee from their home after the police tried to send her to a labor camp as well.
Sun Maofu was sentenced to 1-year at a labor camp in 1999. He was given another 2-year sentence because he wrote a personal statement declaring his firm intention to continue practicing Falun Gong. His whereabouts are unknown.
Zhao Changmei was sentenced to 1-year at a labor cam in 2000. After she was released from the labor camp, she was arrested again for simply talking to other practitioners on a street corner. The police sentenced her to another two years at the labor camp, but released her after she began to vomit blood.
