Questionable Exhibition in Hong Kong

April 05, 2001 |   A Hong Kong citizen
[Minghui Net] Recently, an Anti-[Chinese government's slanderous word omitted] Exhibition was held in the Conference Hall of Hong Kong, part of which was to denounce Falun Gong. The Chinese government's crackdown on Falun Gong has caused a very big controversy in Hong Kong. Comparing the pictures in this exhibition to materials that clarify the truth distributed by Falun Gong practitioners, we can see that the authenticity of the "Anti-Falun Gong" Exhibition is highly questionable. First of all, both sides presented their own interpretation of the self-immolation incident in Tiananmen Square. Falun Gong practitioners stated that from the slow-motion video footage shown by Chinese Central Television (CCTV) on February 4, a female self-immolator was hit by a heavy object and then fell to the ground. Later, she was burned to death. Falun Gong practitioners also pointed out ten suspicious points over the whole incident, and they suggested that the self-immolation incident was plotted by the government to defame Falun Gong. The practitioners also bought up the point that at least 160 practitioners have died due to maltreatment by Chinese police, so it is not inconceivable that other methods would be used in an attempt to defame Falun Gong, even if that meant some more people would die. In the exhibition description, the organizers denied the above charges and claimed they were fabrications by the practitioners. The use of cruel torture by the government and police is a widely known fact in Mainland China, and even the Hong Kong representatives of the Chinese National People's Congress acknowledged this point. Therefore, from analysis given by practitioners, it is questionable that the Chinese government had nothing to do with the self-immolation. Three groups of pictures displayed at the exhibition were really self-defeating. The first were of Macau government's arresting Falun Gong practitioners. The Macau government was initially criticised by the public because of its restriction on Falun Gong practitioners' legal group practice. As the practitioners made legal appeals, the Macau government finally approved their application for group practice. However, because of poor internal communication among the Macau police, Falun Gong practitioners were arrested during their practice (the police later released them and corrected their mistakes). To exhibit such an incident is embarrassing to the Macau government. Secondly, the speeches by Hong Kong Chief-Officer Mr. Tung and the Head of Security Bureau, Mrs. Ye, were said to be the prelude of the Hong Kong government's action against Falun Gong. Actually, many parties are criticizing these comments by Mr. Tung and Mrs. Ye. There is no evidence to prove their speeches are truthful. The pictures of Mr. He of the China Science Academy and an infamous Hong Kong businessman (both of whom are critical of Falun Gong) were also displayed. Aside from these people being well known, they add no credibility to the exhibition and in no way justify the crackdown by Jiang Zemin's government. Thirdly, there were claims that Falun Gong practitioners would jump off buildings to commit suicide. Recently, some people from overseas exceeded their legal residence limit in Hong Kong. During a confrontation with the immigration officials at their place of residence, some people threatened to commit suicide. However, according to the media, these people's landlord is the Chinese central government. In this claim there is no link between Falun Gong and suicides by jumping off of buildings, there's only the fact that the Chinese central government's policies pushes people to threaten to commit suicide. Actually, the purpose of the Chinese government's crackdown on Falun Gong is not because the government believes Falun Gong promotes "superstitions," or it is because the government ironically claims Falun Gong "caused" many deaths; the real reason is that Falun Gong practitioners are independent from the government, and the large number of Falun Gong practitioners made some top officials nervous. They feel threatened because they can't use their theories and ideologies to control this practice. Therefore, the central government started an overwhelming and comprehensive crackdown against Falun Gong, using all political machines, media control and diplomatic clout. March 29, 2001
