The experience of two Montreal Falun Dafa practitioners in China

April 17, 2000 |

My name is Li, Jinyu. I am a Canadian Citizen living in Montreal, and my husband is a Chinese citizen living in China. My whole family practices Falun Gong. We have all benefited from the practice and have become peaceful and tolerant, healthy and energetic.

Last October I went to Shanghai, China to finalize my husband's immigration procedure, so that we can come back to Canada together. During my staying in Shanghai, I met lots of Falun Gong practitioners who had lost their jobs, education, and pensions due to practicing Falun Gong. One evening, when my husband and myself were at a friend's home celebrating a public holiday together, the police broke into our friend's home. We were detained and interrogated for the whole night, because it is not allowable for 3 or more practitioners to meet together, even socially.

We think it is very wrong for the government to suppress its citizen so unreasonably. My husband and myself then decided to go to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong the next day. As soon as we arrived the Complaint Bureau, we were detained and sent back to Shanghai police station, where my husband was kept in detention and myself was deported within 48 hours.

Later, I heard from my husband's family that he was detained for 15 days after I left. Also several days after his release, he was arrested again and was sentenced to one and half years of labor camp without any legal trial, simply because he co-signed an appealing letter to a Chinese member of parliament. The letter stated that Falun Dafa is good and that the people who practice all benefit from it. We as family members are not allowed to visit him. There is no further news of him at this time.

Meanwhile, my brother and his wife were also arrested for signing that appealing letter. The police handcuffed my sister-in-law's hands to a windowsill, with her arms placed behind her back for three days and three nights. And many other practitioners in Shanghai were also sent to labor camp.

Since the situation is getting worse and worse, as a Canadian citizen, I hope that our Canadian government will support justice and righteousness and help stop the human rights violation in the world.

My name is Xueye Zhu. I am a Ph. D student at Concordia University in Montreal. I have been practicing Falun Dafa for more than two years. At the end of last year, I went to China to visit my parents. Upon entering China, the customs officers took away my passport and identification and sent me to the police station, just because I had Falun Dafa books with me. Then about 10 policemen interrogated me for 2 days before I was released. But my books were never returned to me.

When I was home, my mother told me that she did not dare to practice Falun Gong anymore because of government's crackdown. All the people I met, including the police who detained me, warned me not to practice or talk about Falun Dafa in public. Otherwise I would be in danger.

On the other hand, I know that Falun Dafa had upgraded my moral standard and taught me to be truthful, treat others kindly, and endure every hardship under any conditions. And I am becoming happier and happier. I think that the government made a big mistake. Its attacking Falun Dafa is in fact attacking human morality and intuitive knowledge. Therefore I decided to appeal to urge the government to change its policy on Falun Dafa.

I wrote a letter to the leaders of the government, then I went to Beijing to appeal. I took it as my social responsibility as an honest citizen. But I was 'received' by the police, not the government officials.

After some interrogation, I was sent to the Beijing liaison office of my local government, and detained there for 12 days. No any legal documents for this detention was ever shown to me.

My parents and relatives were looking everywhere for me and eventually found out that I was detained. They asked the government to release me. But they were given a choice between losing their jobs or persuade me to denounce Falun Dafa. So my parents and relatives pressured me day and night. But I am a Falun Dafa practitioner; I have to be honest. I cannot lie to myself. So I refused.

In the end, the police forced my parents and relatives to make a written promise to ensure that I would not appeal anymore, or they should be responsible for the consequences. Then I was expelled out of China.
