Practitioners at one of China's Top Universities Face Expulsion and Worse:

Dec. 7, 2000

[Editor's note: Since July 22, 1999, some of Qinghua University's Communist Party committee members have actively cooperated with Jiang Zemin in suppressing Falun Gong. They have forced the students and employees of Qinghua University to stop practicing Falun Gong by threatening suspension and expulsion from school, house arrest, dismissal of university employees, etc. These actions have caused great harm to the practitioners, brought shame to Qinghua University, and seriously undermined the image of the nation. Below is an incomplete list of cases of persecution against Falun Gong practitioners and the perpetrators.]

(1) An incomplete list of cases of persecution against Falun Gong practitioners

1. Yu Jinmei, female, graduate student in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Qinghua University. She is honest and kindhearted and was the head of the "Xinzhai" female student dormitory. She warmheartedly helped the students and received unanimously favorable comments.

On October 25, 1999, the same night when Jiang Zemin annouced Falun Gong to be XX, Wang Zhanwen, Party Secretary of the Department of Chemical Engineering asked people to forcefully take her to the dorm of Lu Yangcheng, an assistant Party Secretary of the Department. They made her watch a TV program that slandered Falun Gong and its founder, Master Li. After that, Wang also tried to force her to promise that she would not go to appeal the next day. Yu Jinmei firmly refused. On October 26, 1999, Yu Jinmei went to peacefully appeal in Tiananmen Square. She was forced into a police vehicle and sent to Fengtai Stadium. Later, Qinghua University policemen took her back. Police slapped her face and detained her. It is believed that the Department of Chemical Engineering and the Police Substation conspired together to detain her.

The University decided to have her leave the campus and go home as soon as possible. To do so, the University initially confined her to a University hotel. Two other female graduate students (her classmates) watched and followed her everywhere, even when she went to the restroom. Later, the school forced Yu Jinmei and many other practitioner students to leave campus and return to their homes. At the same time, the University pressured her parents to give her an "ideological transformation." Her stepfather beat her during that time, but she firmly adhered to her belief.

In December 1999, the University and the Chemical Engineering Department suspended her from school for half a year. Later, in order to avoid pressure from her parents, she returned to the University and was forced to attend the "Transformation Class" for two weeks. During that time, she was under house arrest, experienced mental torture from being forced to watch slanderous materials, and was pressed to write a promise to quit practicing Falun Gong.

In June 2000, she withdrew her "promise" and was suspended from school again. In July 2000, because she copied materials that clarified the truth of Falun Gong in the University Library, she was illegally detained in secret by the No.14 Section of Beijing Public Security, and her dorm was ransacked. Later, she was sentenced to one year of forced-labor education and detained in the Women's Labor Camp in Daxing County in Beijing. In the first month, because she had no money for a quilt, lunchbox, clothes and daily necessities, her life was extremely difficult. Even the wardens felt sad after seeing this. Later, the relatives of her fellow practitioners heard about this during a visit and gave her some money. Her classmates also sent her some money so her situation got better. In the labor camp, she was tortured both mentally and physically by vicious beings. They tried to transform her by using both hard and soft tactics. But Yu Jinmei was very firm and protested with a hunger strike. They also brought the so-called "already transformed" practitioners to persuade her. Yu Jinmei told them in tears: "Dafa is so good. You already obtained the Fa. How could you betray the Teacher?"

2. Pan Yidong, male, undergraduate student (enrolled in 1996) in the Department of Chemical Engineering of Qinghua University, member of the Communist Party. Since July 1999, he was not allowed to register with the Party because he refused to promise to quit practicing Falun Gong. During that time, under the direction of Wang Zhanwen, Party Secretary of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Li Zhenyu, head of the student organization of Chemical Engineering Department, talked to him on many occasions for "ideological transformation." He threatened to take away his Party membership and student status, etc, if he did not give up his belief in "Truthfulness, Benevolence and Forbearance."

On October 27, 1999, the University placed him under house arrest in the university hotel and assigned people to watch and follow him everywhere. They also exerted pressure on his parents and later forced them to take him home for "ideological transformation." In November 1999, he was suspended from school, disqualified from the "PhD candidacy without entrance examination" that he had earned and was forced to withdraw from the Party. On July 23, 2000, he went to appeal on Tiananmen Square and was sentenced to one year of forced-labor education.

3. Zhang Zhigang, male, 24, Communist Party member, graduate student in the Department of Humanities of Qinghua University. He had earned his undergraduate degree from the Department of Water Conservancy of Qinghua University. He had received the "Zhang Guangdou" Scholarship, Outstanding Student Cadre Scholarship, "Wu Zhaoyu" Scholarship and the Second-Class Excellence Scholarship. He was the Party Secretary of his class, Party Propaganda Committee member of his grade, Party committee member for his department, and president of a student association. He directed large-scale activities of the university on several occasions and represented his class for public debate. He helped his class win the award for "Excellent Class" and received numerous compliments from the teachers and students. Because he was an excellent student with good moral character, he was recommended to continue his study as a graduate student in the Department of Humanities in Qinghua University without having to take the entrance examination.

In January 1996, he began to cultivate Falun Dafa. In August 1999, he was forced to write a promise to quit practicing Falun Gong. At the end of the month, he withdrew his promise and persisted in cultivating Falun Gong. As a result, the university did not allow him to enroll as a graduate student and talked to him repeatedly, asking him to resubmit his promise. He refused. In October 1999, the university suspended and sent him home for "ideological transformation" for three months. In January 2000, he was taken by force to a university hotel and was illegally detained and deprived of personal freedom for "ideological transformation." He was forced to study articles that slandered Falun Gong. He was mentally tortured in this way for two weeks.

At the end of the transformation, Zhang Zaixing, Assistant Secretary of the Communist Party of Qinghua University personally threatened to dismiss him from the University and send him home should he not give up Falun Gong. After he refused to give up Falun Gong, he was suspended from school and sent home for further transformation. From his home, he expressed his wish to come back to the university many times and submitted a written application to go back to school in March 2000. Since he didn't write a promise to quit practicing Falun Gong, his application was denied.

On April 25, 2000, public security illegally detained him for one month for going to Tiananmen Square to peacefully appeal and to express that "Falun Dafa is Good." Shortly after he was released, he was illegally detained for one month on charges of "Disrupting Public Order" for showing a Falun Gong article to other people. In July 2000, because he had gone to appeal peacefully for Falun Gong, he was removed from the Communist Party and lost his graduate student status.

4. Ma Yan, female, 25, an undergraduate student in the Department of Architecture of Qinghua University. In February 1998, she began to study for her second degree from the Department of Humanities. In July 1998, she started Falun Dafa cultivation. In September 1999, because she persisted in cultivating Falun Dafa, the university did not allow her to register. On October 21, 1999, she was arrested and detained in Qinghua Police Substation for participating in a cultivation experience sharing conference. Police forced her to squat while they interrogated her until midnight. Because she refused to hand over the Falun Gong books she carried, several policemen beat her, broke her school bag and confiscated the books. Later, the university asked her parents to take her home and help her make a "self-examination." At the end of November, she was officially suspended so that she could make a "self-examination." Later, because she refused to write a promise to quit practicing Falun Gong and a paper to "expose and criticize Falun Gong," she was informally suspended for one year.

In early April 2000, when she went to the Beijing Military Museum to see the "Anti-Falun Gong Exhibit", she left a comment stating that Falun Dafa is the real science. Police took her away immediately and interrogated her at Beijing Public Security. On April 25, 2000, she went to Tiananmen Square to express "Falun Dafa is the orthodox Fa" and was detained for one month. During her detention, no one notified her parents, causing great suffering for her family. After the detention, the university expelled her.

5. Liu Wenyu, male, 28, married, graduate student in the Department of Thermal Energy of Qinghua University. He was the head of the No.7 class in the Department of Thermal Energy, and won the Excellent Student Scholarship of Qinghua University. In May 1999, he started his graduate study early because of his outstanding grades. He had begun to practice Falun Gong in July 1998. At the end of October 1999, he was suspended from school because he persisted in his belief and he was forced to go home. From January 15 to January 30, 2000, the university placed him under house arrest in a university building in a remote village of rural Beijing. His parents were asked to accompany him. Every day, two or three teachers tried to force him to change his beliefs. The Party Secretary of his department even threatened that if he did not transform (change his mind), he and his parents would not be able to go home for the Chinese New Year. During that time, all communication was cut off; his wife is also a Falun Gong practitioner and was not allowed to contact him. Later, since he did not want his parents to endure so much trouble for him, he wrote an "ideological understanding" against his will. He was then taken back to his hometown. The university told his parents to continue to transform him and they kept him locked at home for nearly 40 days. He was not allowed any contact with the outside world.

In June 2000, he went to Tiananmen Square to appeal peacefully for Falun Gong and was detained for one month on the charge of "illegal gathering." After release, because he persisted in his belief, Qinghua University expelled him.

6. Yu Ping, male, 29, graduate student in the Department of Thermal Energy. In March 1997, he began his graduate study early because of outstanding academic performance. He won the "1.29" Scholarship of Qinghua University and the "Seimens" Scholarship. He was the president of the Graduate Student Association of the department and assistant team leader of the Graduate Students Task Force. He began to practice Falun Gong in January 1999. On October 21, 1999, he was arrested and then later detained in Qinghua Police Substation while attending the cultivation experience sharing conference in Qinghua University. He was forced to squat while he was interrogated until next morning. Then, he was made to squat with his hands on the top of his head for two days. The police beat him at that time. At the end of October 1999, he was suspended from school. The university asked his parents to take him back to his hometown. Under the pressure from family members, he wrote a "promise" to give up his beliefs. After coming back to school, he declared that he still adhered to his belief. In early June, he passed the oral defense for his thesis (undertaking the high technology project of the country's 863 plan in the field of aerospace), and won the award of "Excellent Graduation Thesis." However, because he went to Tiananmen Square to peacefully appeal for Falun Gong, he lost his PhD. Even though Ohio State University granted him a full scholarship, he was not able to go to the U.S. for further study.

7. Lin Yang, male, 24-year-old, graduated in 1999 from the Department of Water Conservancy at Qinghua University. He won the "First Class Excellence Scholarship," Third Class Award in "University Challenge Cup Science Exhibition" and "Outstanding Individual in University Science & Technology Affairs." Lin was recommended to enter the M.S. program without examinations. After July, 1999, Lin went to the appeals office to express his opinion. He was taken back to the university's police substation and was placed under surveillance. He had to report his daily activities. When school was resumed in September 1999, he was denied registration because he didn't write an article to criticize Falun Gong and didn't promise that he wouldn't practice Falun Gong. There were seven other graduate students who received the same unfair treatment. Last October, he expressed his concerns to the People's Representatives about Mrs. Zhao Jinhua, a practitioner from Shandong Province who had been beaten to death because of her firm belief in Falun Dafa. He was arrested with the charge of "Illegal Gathering & Disturbing Public Security." Later, he was bailed out, suspended from school and sent back home to receive 'ideological transformation.' In February 2000, overwhelmed with his parents' torment, he wrote a "promise" against his will. He was then reinstated. In April, he wrote a letter to the university to praise Falun Gong and was suspended again without any written documentation. In July, he went to the appeals office and requested the release of all innocent Falun Gong practitioners. Thus, he was arrested again. After being released, he still upheld his belief. The university officially dismissed him on vague grounds that mentioned nothing about Falun Gong. They charged him with "Disturbing Public Security & Violating the Law," and cited no details. All other Falun Gong practitioners dismissed were charged with the same vague reason.

8. Li Yanfang, female, 26-year-old, an M.S. student from the Department of Nuclear Engineering. Li started practicing Falun Gong in March 1999. She practiced publicly on campus in September 1999 and was arrested by the Qinghua University Police Substation. On the night of her arrest, the police interrogated her until the next morning. She was arrested again in late October because she attended a cultivation experience sharing conference. When her Falun Gong book was confiscated, she protested. The police then handcuffed her hands behind her back. At the end of October, she went to the appeals office to express her opinion about Falun Gong. The university requested that her family take her back for 'ideological transformation.' Later, the school suspended her and threatened to dismiss her because she refused to give up her belief. At the end of December, she wrote an "Ideological Understanding" against her will, and was reinstated for spring semester, 2000. In May 2000, she withdrew the "Ideological Understanding." In June, she went to Tiananmen Square to peacefully appeal and was detained by the Beijing Public Security Bureau for nine days. After that, the university again requested that her family take her home to keep her away from trouble. In August, the university denied her registration for the fall semester and suspended her without giving any reason or formal notice. Later, she was given a verbal notice that she had been dismissed from the university. The two suspensions caused great psychological suffering and financial loss to her family who live in a rural area and are quite poor. During this already difficult period, her kind grandmother's cancer worsened and she passed away in July 2000.

9. Qin Peng, male, a 1999 MBA student from Qinghua University. He won many titles during his undergraduate years, such as "Honorable Student," "Excellent Student Officer," etc. He ranked 8th in the MBA entrance exams for the Class of 1999. He was also elected to be the monitor of the MBA class. He was widely praised by his classmates because of his hard work and kindness. In October 1999, he attended a Falun Gong cultivation experience sharing conference and was arrested and detained by the Qinghua University Police Substation for one day with a groundless charge of "Illegal Gathering." He was then suspended from school. In March 2000, he wrote an "Understanding" against his will and was then reinstated by the university. He was arrested again in June 2000 for practicing Falun Gong exercises in the woods on campus and was detained in the Qinghua University Police Substation for 24 hours without food. Later, he requested to withdraw the "Understanding" that he wrote and was suspended from school. At the same time, a deputy dean of the Business School asked him to cancel a summer internship contract, go home and stay away from school. The deputy dean also tried to ask his family to come to take him back. (Qin is married with one child.) The attempt failed because Qin's family couldn't come to Beijing. Now, Qin is at home on suspension. He has submitted numerous requests to go back to school, but they have not been approved.

10. Li Xiaodan, female, 21 years old, an undergraduate student in the Department of Chemical Engineering. Li started Falun Gong cultivation in February 1998. She was arrested in Oct 1999 when she attended a Falun Gong cultivation experience sharing conference. During the detention in the Qinghua University Police Substation, she was physically punished and her Falun Gong books were confiscated. The university then requested that her family take her back home to "let her take a good rest for a while." After that, she tried to negotiate with the university but was eventually suspended because she refused to give up her belief. During the suspension, the university asked her many times to write an "Understanding" and emphasized that she wouldn't be reinstated if she failed to agree that Falun Gong is a XX. Under pressure, she wrote an "Understanding" against her will and was then reinstated. Later, she withdrew the "Understanding." Again, the university suspended her and asked her parents to take her home. During this period, she wrote to the university and explained that the university's actions were wrong and that she wouldn't comply. She never received a reply. At the beginning of fall semester 2000, she inquired about her indefinite suspension. The university first told her that she couldn't register because she was still suspended for a lack of understanding of Falun Gong. They offered to give her an official document of suspension. But they later stated that they would only give her a verbal notice of suspension (Note: The University is worried about any future legal consequences for their action of suspending a student because of Falun Gong should the student hold a formal suspension notice.) Because her family had to come to the university twice to cooperate with Li's 'ideological transformation,' they suffered both financially and psychologically.

11. Wang Weiyu, male, 27-year-old, a PhD. candidate in the Department of Precision Machinery & Instrumentation. Wang started practicing Falun Gong in 1997. He won numerous honors and scholarships, such as "Excellent Graduate," "Honor Student," the "Phillips Scholarship," etc. He was also elected to be class monitor, secretary of the Communist Youth League, vice president of the Society of Science, deputy secretary of the Department Communist Youth League, administrative assistant of 1997 undergraduate class, etc. He was arrested twice in September and October 1999 when he attended Falun Gong cultivation experience sharing conferences. He was detained in the Qinghua University Police Substation where he was forced to squat for more than four hours and was threatened and interrogated until midnight. Later, he was suspended from school for four months. The university emphasized that he wouldn't be reinstated unless he "transformed his thoughts" and wrote an article to criticize Falun Gong. After going back to school, he announced that his beliefs had not changed and he was again suspended in June 2000. During his suspension, he was detained without any charge for one week when he was seen talking to others in Tiananmen Square.

12. Huang Kui, male, 25-year-old, a Ph.D. candidate in the Dept. of Precision Machinery & Instrumentation, class of 1999. Huang started practicing Falun Gong in 1998. He was the winner of the "Zheng Geru Scholarship," "First Class Excellence Scholarship" and "Excellent Graduate," etc. He was elected to class monitor, vice president of Department Society of Science, etc. Because of his excellent undergraduate study he was admitted to the PhD program without examination. On July 25, 1999, he was detained in the Beijing Police Station because he went to the appealing office for Falun Gong. The university suspended him for 3 months in October 1999. He was arrested in June 2000 because he joined the campus group practice. He was publicly beaten by the police and then dismissed from the university.

13. Li Chunyan, female, 21-year-old, an undergraduate student in the Department of Applied Physics. She started practicing Falun Gong in 1997. In September 1999, she was denied registration because she refused to write a "Promise" to quit practicing Falun Gong. She was arrested and interrogated by the Qinghua University Police Substation in October 1999 because she attended a Falun Gong cultivation experience sharing conference. During the detention, she was physically punished. Later, the school suspended her and requested that the task of 'ideological Transformation' be transferred to her father's work unit. The unit constantly threatened to discharge and arrest her father. Under pressure, she wrote a "Promise" to quit Falun Gong practice and was reinstated for spring semester 2000. In June 2000, she withdrew the document. The department head told her: "Either you quit the school by yourself, or we'll dismiss you. It's better for you to quit. At least it sounds better." During that period, she was taken to the university police substation many times and interrogated by police from Department 14 of the Beijing Police Station because she practiced Falun Gong publicly on campus. During the 2nd interrogation, the police threatened, "If you practice again, you'll be arrested as a criminal." They arrested two university staff people as criminals for practicing publicly around this time.

Before the new semester in September 2000, Li Chunyan talked to Tang Jie, the head of the Student Affairs, and expressed her wish to register. At the beginning, she was clearly told that the university would outline in writing that she was suspended for misunderstanding Falun Gong. Later, the university changed its position and said only a verbal suspension could be issued as they wanted the suspension to have a low profile.

14. Liu Zhimei, female, 21-year-old, an undergraduate student in the Dept. of Chemical Engineering. She entered Qinghua University with an examination waiver in 1997. In July 1999, the department forced her parents to take her home for 'ideological transformation.' She was not allowed to register for the summer semester. In September 1999, she was again denied registration for the fall semester because she refused to write a "Promise" to quit Falun Gong practice. She was detained in the Qinghua University Police Substation in October 1999 because she attended a Falun Gong cultivation experience sharing conference. On the night of her arrest, she was interrogated until the next morning. Again, the university forced her parents to take her home. Soon after, she went back to campus by herself and the university made its third call to her father to take her home. They suspended her for one year. In July 2000, she went to Tiananmen Square to peacefully express her will and was illegally detained for over 20 days. During the duration of the detention, she went on a hunger strike. In August 2000, she appealed to the university to be reinstated, but was rejected. The university suspended her without any written statement.

15. Meng Jun, male, 27-year-old, an assistant professor in the Department of Electric Engineering. Meng graduated with an M.S. from Qinghua University. He started working for the university in August 1999. He was detained twice in September and October 1999 in the Qinghua University Police Station and Beijing Police Station because he attended a Falun Gong cultivation experience sharing conference. In November 1999, the university asked him to go home for "Political Study & Ideological Transformation" for two months. After coming back to school, he kept practicing Falun Gong on campus and was interrogated many times. In June 2000, he was detained for six days because he went to Tiananmen Square to appeal peacefully for Falun Gong. After his release, he was told that he would be laid off for another year because he refused to give up his belief in Falun Gong.

16. Zhang Cunman, male, a Ph.D. candidate in the Dept. of Precision Machinery & Instrumentation. He started practicing Falun Gong in 1998. In July 1999, he was detained in the Beijing Police Station because he went to the Appealing Bureau to express his opinion about Falun Gong. In October 1999, he was suspended from school and was sent back home because he kept practicing Falun Gong. After returning to school, he was suspended again in June 2000 because he announced that he still upheld his belief in Falun Gong. Later, he was detained for about two weeks after he went to Tiananmen Square to appeal peacefully for Falun Gong.

17. Chen Zhixiang, male, 26-year-old, a graduate student in the Dept. of Water Conservancy. He was detained in the Beijing Police Station on July 25, 1999 after he went to the government to tell the truth about Falun Gong. When he returned to school, the university asked him to report all of his activities to a school authority on a daily basis. On September 3, 1999, he was detained for a day when he practiced Falun Gong publicly. The school denied his registration. In October 1999, he was detained in Qinghua University Police Substation and interrogated till mid-night after he attended a Falun Gong cultivation experience sharing conference. During the detention, he was physically abused. He was arrested when he went to Tiananmen Square to peacefully appeal for Falun Gong in late October 1999. The university paid his bail and gave him a suspension. Under pressure from his family, he wrote an "Understanding of Ideological Transformation." In July 2000, he was again suspended from school because he withdrew his "Understanding" and announced that he would resume his Falun Gong cultivation. The university threatened to dismiss him if he did not change his belief in one year's time.

18. Xu Zhiguang. male, 23 years old, Ph.D. student (enrollment of 1999) in the Department of Precision Instruments and Mechanical Engineering of Qinghua University. He once received the "Excellent Student Scholarship." He served as the president of the Department student body and assistant president of the Science Association of the department. After he graduated from his undergraduate program, he was accepted into the graduate school without having to take any entrance exam. He started practicing Falun Dafa in the latter half of 1997. In October of 1999, he was suspended by the school for six weeks because he was being faithful to Falun Dafa and was warned, "If you don't separate yourself from Falun Dafa ideologically, then we will not take you back." In June of 2000, he announced that he took back the letter of separation from Falun Dafa that had been written against his will, and was told: "Any further action from you will result in your being suspended and expelled from school."

19. Wang Xin, male, 24 years old, Ph.D. student (enrollment of 1999) in the Department of Precision Instruments and Mechanical Engineering of Qinghua University. He received the "Excellent Cadre of the University Scholarship," "No.2 Excellent Student Scholarship," "Excellent Laixi Alumni Scholarship," "Xiyueyuying Scholarship," and other scholarships. He once served as the class leader and assistant president of the Science Association of the department. After he graduated from his undergraduate program, he was accepted into the graduate school without having to take the entrance exam. He started practicing Falun Dafa at the end of 1995. In October of 1999, he was suspended from school because of his firm belief in Falun Dafa, and was warned: "If you don't separate from Falun Dafa ideologically, then we will not take you back." In June of 2000, he announced that he took back his letter of separation from Falun Dafa, and was told, "any further action from you will result in your being suspended and expelled from school."

20. Li Min, female, 27 years old, married. She was an employee of Qinghua University's construction contractor. She graduated from Qinghua with a Master's degree. Since Jiang Zemin's suppression of Falun Gong started in July of 1999, she was required to cancel her business trip to Japan in August, and her passport has been withheld since. She went to appeal at the end October of 1999, hoping to tell the government of how she had benefited both mentally and physically from practicing Falun Dafa. But she was arrested by the Tiananmen police before she reached her destination, and was taken back to her unit. Her determination for cultivating Falun Dafa remained firm. On the Chinese New Year's eve of 2000 (translator's note: Lunar Calendar's 1999 Chinese New Year is on 2000 AD) her mother lured her back to her hometown (Zhejiang Province) with the excuse of her grandfather's sickness. Two officials went to her hometown and started the 'ideological transformation.' Under the pressure of the family and the government officials, she wrote the letter of separation unwillingly. Later she announced that she is still determined to practice Falun Dafa, and went to Tiananmen Square and appealed peacefully in June of 2000.

21. Yao Yue, female, 27 years old, a graduate student from the Microelectronic department of Qinghua University. She was selected as the Excellent Student in the graduating class by the city of Beijing. She started practicing Falun Dafa since April of 1998. Ever since August of 1999, her department's officials talked to her often, trying to force her to stop practicing Falun Dafa. On September 3rd, 1999, she practiced openly in the campus of Qinghua and was taken away with force by the campus police. She was questioned until the next morning. Because she was determined in her practice and could not agree with the actions that the school was taking, she asked to leave the school and the Communist Party. Her request was approved quickly, but before she could finish the final application paper work, her university took her file away, which prevented her from completing the application.

22. Wang Lanlan, female, 23 years old. She graduated from Qinghua University's Precision Instrument and Mechanical Engineering Department. She was a member of the art club and was once sent to perform in Japan and Taiwan by her school. She started practicing Falun Dafa in the beginning of 1998. Her acceptance to graduate school without having taken an entrance examination was cancelled because she remained faithful to her practice after Jiang Zemin started oppressing Falun Gong.

23. Zhao Shaojun, male, he received his Master's degree in Precision Instrument and Mechanical Engineering from Qinghua in 1998. He once served as the graduate student president of the department. He was suspended from school for three months in October 1999 because he was determined to practice Falun Gong.

24. Cai Huai-yu, male, 24 years old, Qinghua Electrical Engineering major. He started practicing Falun Dafa at the end of July 1998. He once received the "Excellent New Student" scholarship. On July 25 of 1999, he appealed to clarify the truth of Falun Dafa and was detained for one day by the Beijing police department. In October of 1999, he was sent home for eight weeks and was later told that he had been suspended from the school because he remained faithful to his practice. He was told that if he didn't separate from Falun Dafa ideologically, he would not be able to go back to school.

25. Wang Zhiqiang, male, 30 years old. He was a 1997 architecture major from Qinghua University. He was suspended from school on October of 1999, and has not been allowed to go back since. His whereabouts are unknown.

26. Chu Tong, female, a Microelectrical Engineering lecturer in Qinghua University. She began to practice Falun Gong in 1995. Because Jiang Zemin slandered Falun Dafa as a XX in France, she appealed in Beijing Tiananmen on October 26 and was viciously beaten by the police. She was arrested and detained in the Beijing Police Department Seventh Section (which deals with important cases). During her detention, she was tortured with various methods. But she was always determined in her practice. Later, along with over 10 other practitioners, she was sentenced on charges of "illegal protest." In the courthouse, she was fearless and spoke the truth and proclaimed the innocence of Falun Dafa and Dafa practitioners. She was sentenced to jail for 18 months.

27. Yu Jia, female, an instructor of Economics and Business Management at Qinghua University. She went to Tiananmen Square to appeal on Chinese New Year in 2000 and was detained for one month. She was taken back to the police department of Zhongguancun (in Haidian District of Beijing) and was detained for 48 hours without a proper reason. Her work unit took her back after the police forced her to write a promise not to contact other practitioners again. When she was still in custody, the police went to her office and took all her Dafa related materials away. She was detained for one month because she appealed on Tiananmen Square on April 25th, 2000. She was handcuffed from the back for several days while she was detained. After she was released, she practiced on the Qinghua campus openly and was detained and beaten by the police on several occasions. All her personal property was confiscated without a warrant. A few days before July 20 of 2000, she was taken away secretly by the Police Department of Beijing and detained for about one month. Her school fired her because of her determination in her practice, and only a small amount of her wages was given to her.

29. Jia Xiaomei, female, an employee in the mechanical factory of Qinghua University. On December 26, she went to observe the trial of members of the Falun Dafa Research Association. At an exit of a subway station near the Beijing people's court, a policeman asked her whether she practiced Falun Gong. She answered yes and was taken away. The Haidian Police Station detained her for one month. During her detention, her family was not notified of this matter. Since then, every time before the sensitive days (days on which large numbers of practitioners were expected appeal peacefully in Tiananmen) the Zhongguancun Police Department would restrict her personal freedom. The longest was for 48 hours. The police never showed her any warrant for what they did. On April 16, 2000, she practiced at her old practice site and was taken away by the police without a proper reason, and was detained for one month. On June 30, 2000, she practiced in an open area in front of her apartment in the morning and was detained by the police again without telling her family. Inside the detention center she was beaten and humiliated by her cellmates because she practiced the Falun Gong exercises. She went on a hunger strike, refusing to take any water or food for three days. She was released when her health was extremely poor. On July 20, 2000, the police who had waited for her in front of her apartment took her away with force. She was then detained for 48 hours. The reason for that was because they "thought" she might go to Beijing Tiananmen and appeal. On August of 2000, because of her firm belief in her practice, her employer told her to resign. When she refused, they forbade her from coming to work again.

In addition, when the police of Qinghua University held those students that participated in an experience-sharing in October of 1999, the police of both Qinghua University and Beijing Police Department 14 Section beat two students. The overseas media also reported this matter. To cover up the truth, the police of the 14th section especially went to Qinghua University in April of 2000 and by using lies and threats they forced the students to write a denial of the beatings. The students that they talked to were not the two who had been beaten up. They asked questions that were not related to the beating, and tried to cover up the beating. For example, they called "hand covering the head, and forced-squatting for one whole day" as a "usual position to exert caution." One can only wonder what these police want the innocent practitioners to be "cautious" about.

In addition, Li Yixiang, a Ph.D. student in Electrical Engineering, resigned from the Party and announced it through the Internet. He also appealed peacefully numerous times. He was labeled a "key member" by the university. He was detained for one month after he participated in the experience sharing conference in October of 1999. He was under house arrest in 'No. 200' by the university after he was released (No. 200 is an experimental base of the Qinghua Nuclear Research Institute in an isolated and remote village). There he received the so-called "transformation class." More than 10 employees took turns in trying to "transform" him; they even called his mother to participate. Li Yixiang was forced to write numerous "cognitive materials." These "cognitive materials" were gathered into one file and named "A Ph.D. Student's Separation from Falun Gong" and was published in the People's Daily. His statement then became known as a "transformation model" of Qinghua University and they used this file to take credit and request rewards from the government. Later, in order to stop Yixiang from "reversing his previous thoughts," the police kept close surveillance of him. They made him write a report every time he needed to leave the school so that the school and the government could impose strict control on him all the time. During this year's New Year's Eve, a practitioner who works in Qinghua invited him to his apartment for a visit. After the school found this out, the Party Secretary "requested" Li Yixiang to go to his house during the holiday. The practitioner that invited Yixiang was evicted from his apartment and was fired by his company.

As one of the most famous universities in China, the ways Qinghua University has dealt with students are incomprehensible. During the ten months of "transformation," the university dismissed students from school and forced students who have no income off the campus. ID cards and lunch cards were taken away without proper warrants or permission, and students were evicted out of their school dorms. In September of 2000, those students who had received numerous threats of suspension and expulsion from school gathered and asked the school to show them the proper files for their dismissals. The school was afraid that their acts would be exposed, and refused to show the files. The more than twenty students who were expelled were all excellent students in school. But now they become the so-called "unemployed" and "without a rightful status" in the society. In this so-called period of "the best human rights in China," that has created these kinds of de-stabilizing factors?
