Letter to Chinese Ambassador from New Zealand Foreign Minister

Nov. 30, 2000

His Excellency Mr Chen WengZhoa

Ambassador

Peoples Republic of China

2-5 Glenmore Street

WELLINGTON

Dear Ambassador,

I have been receiving considerable correspondence from New Zealanders regarding actions taken against practitioners of Falun Dafa in China. I enclose for you some recent material sent by one such practitioner. As you know I recently raised this issue with Zeng Qinghong when he visited New Zealand.

According to information given to me, Falun Dafa is a spiritual movement and not a political one. It is practised in many countries of the world including New Zealand without causing problems or offence.

The cases in the paper I have enclosed for you seem well documented. Could you please make enquiries about why these people were arrested and allegedly treated in the way described. If the accounts are accurate, I am deeply disturbed that people are being treated in such a brutal way.

Could you please also advise me why Falun Dafa is a proscribed organisation and what evidence there is that its activities are harmful in China when they are not considered harmful elsewhere in the world.

Yours Sincerely

Hon Phil Goff

Minister of Foreign Affairs
