Case Description:
Mr. Chong Cunjie, 63 years old, was an employee of the Hebei Province (Hengshui City) Labor Camp. On July 20, 1999, Mr. Chong was working. The Hengshui City Legal Bureau dispatched an employee to persuade Mr. Chong to go to the Bureau claiming that they only wanted to have a talk with him, but instead they arrested him. He was sentenced to two years in prison. That was the first time he was sentenced to a prison term. He was released on July 26, 2001. At around 2:30 a.m. on February 13, 2002, two days after the Chinese New Year, he escaped arrest by climbing down a pipe from the fourth floor of his home building. He had to leave home to avoid arrest. However, he was arrested on March 16, 2002. He was sentenced to five years in prison, and released on March 16, 2007. Mr. Chong was fired from his job. He had an 89-year-old mother and young grandson to care for. His son and daughter-in-law are both in prison for practicing Falun Gong. Mr. Chong's health was severely damaged from being imprisoned for seven years. He had lost his voice and appeared very ill. He died of a heart attack and in the Yongxing Hospital on February 5, 2008, two days before the Chinese New Year.
