Case Description:
Mr. Yu Xianjiang, born on December 21, 1952, was a resident of Group 32, Team 11, Rongguang Road, Erdao District, Changchun City, Jilin Province. In the past four years, he had been arrested and tortured many times. On August 15, 2002, he was again taken away from his home and sent to Xinglongshan Brainwashing Center. On October 10, 2002, he was transferred to Chaoyanggou Labor Camp. Because of the long-term torture, he was extremely weak. On May 3, 2003, he was checked into the hospital when he was in grave danger. In the seven days of hospitalization, the medical bills amounted to over 7,000 yuan (the average monthly income of a Chinese worker is about 500 yuan). The police forced his brother to borrow money to pay off the medical expenses. Since his family could not find any more money to pay for his hospitalisation, he had to come home to rest. In mid December 2003, he was again rushed to hospital for emergency treatment. This time the medical expenses were over 2,000 yuan. Being single and not having any income because of the persecution, he could not afford to stay in the hospital any longer. Therefore, he had to be discharged from the hospital before he recovered. Half a month later, on January 21, 2004 (on the eve of the Chinese New Year), he passed away in a sitting position, with no one around. Related articles:
