  • Calling for Help -- Rescue My Sister, Falun Gong Practitioner Zhou Meihua

By Zhou Jinhua, a Chinese living in Japan

I am Zhou Jinhua, a Falun Gong practitioner who resides in Japan. My sister Zhou Meihua lives in Dalian, Liaoning Province in mainland China. In March 2007, she was arrested because she was distributing truth-clarification materials about the persecution. She was illegally imprisoned in a forced labor camp and has been tortured, including being beaten by police.

My mother took Meihua's 8-year-old daughter, Yu Jiahui, to the labor camp for a visit. They witnessed the beatings of Falun Gong practitioners. The child was shocked and hurt and she now worries daily about her mother's well-being. Every time I call my mother, little Jiahui, who is now under my mother's care, cries on the phone and begs me to help get her mother released from prison. In the beginning of May, she asked someone to pass me a note: "Auntie, please help rescue my mother." I am appealing to all kind people and governments to uphold justice, and please help me fulfill the dream of an 8-year-old girl.

Please find below all I could learn from my mother and other witnesses about my sister's situation:

On the morning of March 19, 2007, Ms. Zhou Meihua was reported by a janitor when she was distributing truth-clarification materials. Gao Tiansheng, from the Xiuyuejie Police Station of Zhongshan District, Dalian City and other police illegally arrested her. This was the fourth time my sister was arrested since July 20, 1999 when Jiang and his cohorts began the persecution of Falun Gong. Gao Tiansheng robbed her of about 1,000 yuan while searching her, which included the money she needed for to pay for her daughter's school lunches. Gao and other policemen beat Ms. Zhou because she refused to admit that she had committed any crime. On March 20, Ms. Zhou was taken to Yaojia Detention Center in Dalian, and detained in the 10th Team of the 8th Ward.

My mother could not eat or sleep after she learned this. My father is in a coma from a traffic accident. He needs 24-hour care. And Meihua's daughter needs to be taken and picked up daily at school. My mother knows how terrible the police, 610 Office, local residents' committee, the court, the procuratorate and their affiliated organization are. She knows how they persecute Falun Gong practitioners and their families, from brainwashing to torture, including levying illegal fines.

My mother and my niece went to the Xiuyuejie Police Station and requested my sister's release. A group of police surrounded them the minute they arrived. A deputy director shouted at them, and three policemen dragged them down the stairs from the 3rd floor. The security guard seemed to still have some goodness in him. He explained that there was nothing he could do. He said he would lose his job if he didn't obey orders and force them to leave.

My mother also went to Yaojia Detention Center and requested to visit my sister. Her request was denied without an explanation. She had to leave the clothing, toothbrush, and 300 yuan in cash with the guards and asked them to pass them to my sister. Instead, the guards kept all of these items for their personal use.

My mother went many times to the police station and requested my sister's release. Gao Tiansheng tried to avoid her every time. The policemen threatened her and made her go out. My mother was told by the security guards to leave without delay. They claimed that they were not in charge of my sister's persecution. In fact, everyone participated in the persecution.

Around 10:00 a.m. on April 17, police from Xiuyuejie Police Station took Ms. Zhou Meihua from the Yaojia Detention Center and put her in a cage where she could not even stand straight. They took her to Masanjia Forced Labor camp, without notifying her family and without any legal process. This was the second time my sister was taken to a forced labor camp. She refused to sign any of the documents. Gao Tiansheng needed the legal documents and tried to deceive my mother into coming to the police station to sign on behalf of my sister. My mother refused.

On April 26, my mother went from Dalian to Shenyang to visit my sister in Masanjia Labor Camp. The police told her that she could not see her because my sister refused to be "transformed." My mother argued with them. Eventually, 40 days after the initial arrest, my mother saw my sister. My sister was detained in the Third Team, Firs Branch. We heard that the Third Team is for detaining Falun Gong practitioners only.

Within just a month, Meihua looked like a different person. She was very thin and weak. Her hair was cut short and she was in camp uniform. Her face was bathed in tears. Her hands were red and swollen and some of the skin had peeled off. My mother suspected it was as a result of torture. When she asked what had happened, the guard answered that my sister is "too stubborn." My mother asked if she was forced to work, and the guard answered "no." My sister kept repeating that she had a stomachache and she could not sleep.

It is known that the staff at Masanjia Forced Labor Camp force prisoners to work long hours, from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., making military uniforms and other clothes. They also at times are forced to do heavy labor from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. or even 11:00 p.m., and longer. But, the camp authorities tell inspectors that the working hours are no longer than six hours daily. Masanjia also persecutes prisoners economically. They charge prisoners more than double the market price for daily necessities and even give them fake or stale products. In order to "save energy resources," prisoners are allowed to take a warm shower only once every two weeks and sometimes only once a month. They are generally allowed to take cold showers only, even in winter. They are not given safe drinking water. At least one meal per day is radish soup only, without any oil and barely any radish in it. I'm very worried about my sister's health and safety.

My mother is more worried. On May 8th, she went with my sister's daughter and three other friends to visit my sister. They could not see my sister. They begged the guard. The guard answered that only "transformed" practitioners could receive visitors. One friend went out and wrote on the street, "Heaven will eliminate the CCP," and "Have a safe future by quitting the CCP." She wanted to awaken the conscience of the police and guards and tell them not to be buried along with the CCP (Chinese Communist Party). She wanted to tell them not to lose their future. The police from Masanjia saw this and several of them rushed out to beat her to the ground. Then they dragged her by her hair and threw her into a car. They also arrested two other friends. My sister's daughter witnessed this and cried loudly. The little girl kept having nightmares afterwards.

I beg the United Nations, all human rights groups and government officials worldwide to help my sister. Please help rescue my sister and reunite her family.

Attached is an appeal letter from my sister's daughter, Jiahui:

    Dear Auntie and Uncle,

    How are you?

I'm writing this letter to you today. Is everything going well? Are you busy at work? I'm doing fine. I will do well in school, please don't worry about me. I will show you good grades. Every day I draw pictures. I also study. Grandpa is doing well these days, so is grandma. Auntie please find a way to help my mother.

    Yu Jiahui

    A Chinese Pupil's Essay: Mother's Love

An elementary school in Hebei Province recently conducted a "gratitude education" session. The third grade teacher in charge requested the students to write an essay about "being grateful to parents." A Falun Gong practitioner's ten-year-old daughter wrote a paper entitled, "Mother's Love." The full text is as follows:

    Mother's Love

My mother loves me very much. She nearly lost her life for me to be able to grow up joyfully and healthily.

My mother is a Falun Gong practitioner. She started practicing Falun Gong even before I was born. Mother said that at that time there were many Falun Gong practitioners, and Zhuan Falun was voted by many newspapers to be one of the bestsellers. To this day, mother still keeps the clippings of the announcements in the Beijing Youth Paper and the Beijing Evening News about Zhuan Falun being designated as a bestseller.

Afterwards someone in the central government did not allow the practice of Falun Gong. When I was one-and-a-half years old, mother was forcefully taken to a detention center or prison time and time again, and I had to live with my father and paternal grandmother. I was used to breast feeding, so I refused to bottle feed. I was hungry and cried a lot, and my father and paternal grandmother were under a lot of stress. During that time, my father frequently held me in his arms and silently shed tears.

Mother was detained at the detention center for a year and a half then imprisoned at the labor camp for two years. When she returned, I was attending kindergarten, and my mother took me and picked me up from the kindergarten every day. On the road, I would sing for my mother, "one fish, swims in the water, lonesome and worrying." Because of my young age, my pronunciation was not clear, and I always pronounced "lonesome (gu-gu-dan-dan)" as "Gu Gu Da Da." My mother finally, with great difficulty, made sense of the lyrics, and she could not help but laugh. I laughed with her. The time I had with my mother was really great.

The good times did not last long, and my mother was detained at a labor camp once again. This time, for my sake, mother did not passively endure. Mother said to the labor camp guards: "My daughter was forcibly separated from her mother since she was a year-and-a-half old. Because she did not have a mother by her side, she became timid and lost her bright spirit. For my child to be able to grow up joyfully and healthily, I have to go home. You are also mothers, I hope you can understand me."

Mother conducted a hunger strike, refusing food and water for ten days. The labor camp guards inserted a tube through mother's nostrils to force feed her; the guards intentionally filled highly-concentrated salt water into my mother's stomach, and the salt water burst from mother's nasal cavity and oral cavity. Mother's stomach was so swollen that she tossed on the bed due to the pain, without closing her eyes all night long. In order to torture mother, the labor camp guards did not permit mother to pull out the tube. Mother could only breathe through her mouth, and her throat and mouth had bloody cracks due to dehydration.

Finally, my mother's blood pressure, pulse, and body temperature all receded. Fearing responsibility for my mother's death, the labor camp agreed to release my mother.

When, my father and I went to pick up mother, Mother was very skinny. When my near-death mother saw me, she opened her cracked mouth and smiled.

I finally had my mother again, and I finally can live together with my mother. The feeling of having a mother is really good.

    * * * * *

The child's teacher read the paper aloud to her class, and evaluated the paper as "real and touching."

Weiningying Labor Camp Routinely Tortures Falun Gong Practitioners on "Death Bed"

The methods that Liu Shaoshi, director of Weiningying Labor Camp in Benxi, Liaoning Province, uses to persecute Falun Gong practitioners are extremely sinister and ruthless. He instigates police officers Ding Huibo, Guo Tieying, Zheng Tao, and Zheng Kai, to forcefully "transform" Falun Gong practitioners. The cruelty of the methods that they use on practitioners is escalating. The method they use routinely is called the "Death Bed torture". Several Falun Gong practitioners were tortured this way and some have become disabled afterwards.

Falun Gong practitioner Xin Shuren, from Tieling, was tortured until he was emaciated. He was not able to walk or look after himself, but they wouldn't stop torturing him. He should have been released on February 14, 2007, but his sentence was extended for three months because he refused to be "transformed".

Falun Gong practitioner Sun Tiechun, had been put on the Death Bed once a year from 2004 to 2006 because he would not give up his belief. Now he is disabled; his arms and legs are useless.

Falun Gong practitioner Liu Chengguo, from Fengcheng City, was put under the so-called "Strict Management". He was often beaten and verbally abused by the prison guards. Once, Liu Chengguo did not go for exercises and as a result was beaten by guard Ding Huibo, and confined to a solitary compartment for half a month. Another time, when Liu Shaoshi was "teaching a lesson," Liu Chengguo was standing behind him. One guard asked Liu Chengguo to stand at the front. Liu Chengguo didn't listen, so the guard started to beat him. Liu Shaoshi was watching beside them. As long as Liu Chengguo does not "transform", they will look for trouble and find fault in order to force him to renounce his faith.

Recently, two more Falun Gong practitioners were arrested. One is Lang Qingsheng from Donggang, and the other one is Zhang Qinggui from Fengcheng. They have been under 24 hours of "Strict Management" for several days. They are barely allowed to have even a little sleep. Guards and collaborators take turns watching them. Liu Shaoshi said, "Destroy their willpower and break their bodies."

Mr. Lin Baocai and Mr. Jiang Liguo from Heilongjiang Province Died of Persecution

Mr. Lin Baocai Suffers Mental Collapse and Death as a Result of Torture

Mr. Lin Baocai, 68-year-old, was from Xingguo Village, Donghai Township, Jidong County, Heilongjiang Province. On August 23, 2006 when he was clarifying the truth about Falun Gong and advising people to withdraw from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), Donghai Township Police Station and the National Security Group of Jidong County arrested him. When Mr. Lin could not come up with the money (500 yuan) required for his release, the police transferred him to the county detention center and tortured him.

On September 29 when Mr. Lin was released, his family found that he had become mentally unbalanced. Whenever he heard a car horn, he would try to run away. Soon afterwards, Mr. Lin ran away and never returned. Although his family reported him missing, the police never responded.

About forty days later, a shepherd found Mr. Lin's body on Mount Shiliuliannan. He was hung by a rope between two pine trees His body was about one foot in the air and underneath him was a steep slope. His family could only recognize him by his clothes. Neighbors all said that the CCP murdered Mr. Lin.

More Information about the Persecution Suffered by Practitioner Jiang Liguo Before His Death

Mr. Jiang Liguo was a practitioner from Donghua Village of Xinxing Town, Shuangcheng City, Heilongjiang Province. In November 2001 when he was clarifying the truth to people, Jiang Lirong, the village CCP Committee secretary (Mr. Jiang Liguo's brother), and He Yongqing, the village accountant, found him and arrested him. They immediately called the government of Xinxing Town. But during that period, Mr. Jiang escaped.

Later, when Zhang Yunlong, the head of the Political and Legal Committee of Xinxing Town, was having dinner at Liang Lirong's home, he met Mr. Liang Liguo who happened to be at his brother's home. Zhang told Mr. Liang Liguo, "If you were not Jiang Lirong's brother, we would have arrested you a long time ago."

But only a few days later, Zhang Yunlong and Sun Qingman, leading a group people, broke into Mr. Jiang's home and ransacked it. They arrested Mr. Jiang. Mr. Jiang's little grandson was so terrified that he was crying loudly during the whole process.

Jiang Liguo was brought to the Xinxing Town Police Station. The officials there beat him with plastic pipes filled with sand. Then, they threw him into a car, because he couldn't move after the beating, and transferred him to the Second Detention Center of Shuangcheng City.

The detention center tortured Mr. Jiang more brutally, causing him to have trouble breathing and to vomit blood. The detention center was afraid of taking responsibility for Mr. Jiang's condition, so they called the Xinxing Town government and Donghua Village and asked them to pick him up, but no one came. Finally, the detention center sent Mr. Jiang to Wanjia Forced Labor Camp. Because he couldn't pass the physical examination, the forced labor camp refused to accept him.

Mr. Jiang was at the edge of death. But the Xinxing Town government didn't release him until they extorted 1,000 yuan from his family. The torture caused serious physical and mental damage to Mr. Jiang. After returning home, he was very weak, and eventually, in October 2002 he passed away .

Ms. Sun Yan and Ms. Wang Minli Brutally Tortured and Injected with Drugs

Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Sun Yan, 42, was arrested at her home near the 250th Factory in Yushugou on March 15, 2007. She is currently being held in Cell 605 at Jilin City Detention Center. After arresting her, the police took Ms. Sun to the Jilin City Police Dog Training Center, where they tortured her in an attempt to coerce a "confession." The police officers beat her with electric batons to the point that she was unable to control her bowels. When she protested the torture, the officers shackled her legs, dragged her away, and had her injected with drugs. After they brought her back, Ms. Sun was unable to move or speak.

On May 14, 2007, police arrested more practitioners, including Ms. Wang Minli. She too is being held at the Jilin City Detention Center. The police also took Ms. Wang to the Jilin City Police Dog Training Center and tortured her while attempting to coerce a confession. They taped her mouth shut and forced mustard oil into her nose. During this torture, she lost consciousness several times. The officers threw the last bottle of mustard oil into her eyes. The torture left Ms. Wang so weak that she is unable to care for herself.

The instruments of torture that the police used on Ms. Wang and Ms. Sun were handcuffs, leg shackles, triangular-shaped bars (a device to press on practitioners), electric batons, and mustard oil. The two male officers who tortured the practitioners were Du Xingze and Di Shigang.
