  • Ms. Zhao Shuying Becomes Crippled as the Result of Torture - Elderly Mother Dies Awaiting Her Release

Ms. Zhao Shuying, a practitioner from Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province, is being held at the Gaoyang Labor Camp, a provincial camp in Gaoyang County, Hebei Province. As a result of the persecution to which she has been subjected, she has become so weak that she is unable to walk on her own. Sadly, Ms. Zhao's elderly mother died several days ago after a long and futile wait for her youngest daughter's return.

Ms. Zhao was transferred from Xuanhua Detention Center in Zhangjiakou City to the 1st Squadron of the 5th Group, at the Gaoyang Labor Camp in January 2005. In April, while returning to her cell from a labor assignment, she experienced spasms, fell to the ground, and lost consciousness. The labor camp neglected to give her any treatment, and she became disabled as a result. She has lost the use of her right leg, and she experiences dizziness regularly. She has become so weak that she sleeps 15 to 17 hours per day, and she experiences agonizing pain every ten to fifteen days. Those episodes are accompanied by severe vomiting, leaving her bedridden and unable to eat.

In July or August 2005, Ms. Zhao and Ms. Chen Aihong wrote a letter to expose the scandalous conditions in the Fifth Row, but the guards discovered the letter during a routine search. In retaliation, Chief Li Xuejun (male) sneaked into the women's area while the practitioners were on their way to the cafeteria and viciously hit Ms. Chen in the head. She suffered a heart attack as a result. Ms. Zhao and the other practitioners went on a hunger strike in protest. As punishment, the guards put them in solitary confinement and force-fed them. The guards inflicted other tortures on them as well, including taping their mouths shut and shocking them with electric batons and crank telephones wired to their bodies.

In May 2006, among various brutal attempts to "transform" practitioners, the chief allowed criminal inmates to beat Ms. Zhao until her legs became black-and-blue. He also had them deprive her of sleep. In August, all inmates had their sentences reduced by four months--except for Ms. Zhao.

Three Practitioners Sentenced and Others Arrested Outside Yilan County Court in Heilongjiang Province

On the morning of April 20, 2007, the court of Yilan County, Heilongjiang Province, illegally tried Falun Gong practitioners Mr. Gong Fengqiang, Mr. Sun Ren, and Mr. Ma Honggang. Mr. Gong had been treated so badly in detention that he had difficulty speaking, but he still exposed the abuse he suffered, such as beatings so brutal that he was knocked unconscious and being awakened by cold water being poured over him. It was said that the court reported the trial proceedings to authorities in Harbin City, who had plotted to have the three practitioners sentenced.

When the trial was about to end at around 11:00 a.m., plainclothes police officers from Yilan County, who had waited outside the court for a long time, arrested practitioner Mr. Yan Juguo and another practitioner outside the court. They also arrested the driver of the cab that Mr. Yan had taken. All three people are detained in Yilan County Police Department.

The Fifteen Common Methods of Torture Used at Xinhua Forced Labor Camp in Mianyang City, Sichuan Province

By a Falun Gong Practitioner in Sichuan Province

I was detained twice at Xinhua Forced Labor Camp in Mianyang City for persisting in Falun Gong practice and clarifying the truth about Falun Gong. I was held from January 23, 2001, until March 24, 2002, and again from May 22, 2002 until December 15, 2004, a total of four years. During that time I witnessed many autrocities committed in Xinhua Forced Labor Camp.

There are at least 15 methods of torture commonly used in persecuting practitioners at Xinhua Forced Labor Camp.

    1. Ropes and Electric Batons

There were numerous victims of this torture, and I would like to mention a few as examples to help readers understand what they actually did. One morning in April 2001, several other practitioners and I were studying Falun Gong teachings, sitting on the floor of a small classroom. I was reciting Falun Gong teachings. Camp guard Deng Tao discovered us. He brought me to the office for questioning and called in other guards from the fifth floor. They pushed me to the floor and stood on my back. They tied my hands very tightly behind me and then shocked me with electric batons.

Practitioner Mr. Li Ming shouted, "Those who talk nonsense will be punished" at a so-called exposure and criticism meeting. Guards Deng Haibo, Fu Weidong and others dragged him into an office and brutally beat him with the help of some inmates. I met up with Mr. Li Ming at lunch and his lips were badly swollen from the beating. He had many burn scars from the electric batons.

One day I saw that practitioner Mr. Liu Yongsheng's lips were swollen with a thick layer of yellowish foam. I later learned that it was the result of repeated shocks by electric batons. They did this to him for tearing down a propaganda poster in the corridor of the 2nd Squadron of the 6th Group.

There was an "exposure and criticism meeting" held on February 13, 2004. It was held by the 2nd Squadron of the 6th Group. Practitioners Mr. Li Yonghong, Mr. Wei Lang, Mr. Liu Yongsheng, Mr. Wang Renwei, Mr. Zheng Fangjun, and Mr. Huang Changdong repeatedly shouted, "Falun Dafa is good!" Guard Fu Weidong and other guards used their police ropes and batons to beat these practitioners. Practitioners Li Yonghong, Wang Renwei, Zheng Fangjun, and Huang Changdong were forced to wear helmets and endure additional torture.

Practitioners Mr. Che Lian and Mr. Liao Ancai were beaten by guard Fu Weidong for refusing to write the so-called "ideological reports." Practitioner Mr. Chen Lian was forced to wear a helmet and endure further persecution. Practitioners Mr. Xu Langzou and Mr. Li Zhiming were beaten with police ropes and batons, and kicked and punched for refusing to do slave labor at the construction site.

In autumn 2000, practitioner He Zhenyao was tortured with police ropes at the 3rd Squadron of the 6th Group for refusing to wear a camp uniform.

Disciplinary guard Wang called in about eight guards from the 3rd Squadron of the 4th Group. They used five high-voltage electric batons to shock practitioner Wei Lang until all the electric charges in the batons were depleted. The head guard's surname was Pan. He used the opportunity to demonstrate to the guards how to tie people up with police ropes. The guards shocked practitioner Mr. Wei Lang's carotid artery, making all Mr Wei's muscles to twist and causing him terrible pain. The guards teased him maliciously. Even so, Mr. Wei still remained firm in his belief and refused to renounce Falun Gong. One guard punched Mr. Wei twice before he left the room. Mr. Wei Lang is now being held in Wumaping Jail.

Practitioner Mr. Lu Zhitong decided not to sing any song with Party culture content during his detention in the "special group" under the control of the 5th Squadron of the 4th Group. During that period of time, he was beaten by the guards using police ropes and batons three times a day for over a week. This was because the detainees were forced to sing songs before each meal. He resolutely rejected their demands. The torture cases are simply too many to list.

    1. All Kinds of Lies Fabricated to Deceive Practitioners

There are numerous examples. The police have used all sorts of methods to persecute practitioners, attempting to force them to renounce Falun Gong. These methods include separation, humiliation, corporal punishment, violence, intimidation, strict control and brainwashing with false reasoning, and heresy. Practitioner Mr. Li Xinze was held at the 3rd Squadron of the 6th Group until he died as a result of the inhuman torture.

    1. Forcing Practitioners to Take Oral Drugs and Injections

I was held in the 2nd Squadron of the 4th Group in early 2002. I was tricked into entering the guards' duty office. I was immediately set upon by four or five inmates who held me to the floor. They said I needed preventive drugs for cholera and administered the drugs. SARS was spreading in 2003. The guards from the 2nd Squadron of the 6th Group forced Fu Weidong to have an injection and then a blood test. Many practitioners were forced to take drugs or have injections.

Practitioner Mr. Zhang Zhaohong was in the same dormitory as we were, the 2nd Squadron of the 6th Group. The more the camp hospital forced treatment on Mr. Zhang, the worse his "illness" became. The camp had to release him on bail for medical treatment because he was dying. He died the day after he returned home.

    1. Forcing Practitioners to Run 50 Laps on the Drill Ground

I was standing in front of a window at the 2nd Squadron of the 4th Group one day in 2001. I witnessed the corporal punishment of practitioners Mr. Hu Ran and Mr. Wu Kaisong guards from the 5th Squadron of the 4th Group. They were forced to run on the drill ground, and when they were too tired to run they were dragged. I was locked up at the special group quarters with some other practitioners in late 2002. Zhao Yu was selected as one of the ten best guards by the Chinese Communist Party. He demanded that we run more than 50 laps around the drill ground.

Wu Hao, head of the 4th Group, was put in charge of the "special group" established on December 9, 2002. Zhao Yu was named Deputy Leader over Tang Xufeng, a guard from the 1st Squadron; Mao Yuan, a guard from the 2nd Squadron; a guard with the surname of Wang from the 3rd Squadron of  the 4th Group; and another guard with the surname of He. All the practitioners from the four sections under the 5th Group were all transferred to the 5th Squadron of the 4th Group, which was under Zhao Yu, a political commissar. The practitioners were persecuted there.

    1. Practitioners Forced to Squat Down for Long Time Periods and Subjected to Beatings

During the summer and autumn of 2002, the practitioners held at the 2nd Squadron of  the 6th Group were all subjected to corporal punishment. The practitioners were ordered to do formation drills or stand in "army corps" positions. They were forced to squat down with their arms stretched out, going up and down repeatedly. Sometimes the guards just beat the practitioners without reason.

In 2004, practitioner Mr. Gu Zhiguang in the 2nd Squadron of the 6th Group was called to a room where he was forced to stand in the "army corps" position. At the same time, Mr. Gu was being beaten by the "personal cangues."(1) In early 2003, guard Fu Weidong ordered practitioner Mr. Wang Renwei at the 2nd Squadron of the 6th Group to do formation drilling. Mr. Wang refused and was severely beaten by guards Dong Haibo and Fu Weidong.

    1. Forcing Practitioners to Stand in "Army Corps" Positions and Do Formation Drills Under the Scorching Sun

The 5th Squadron of the 4th Group, the 2nd Squadron and the 3rd Squadron of the 6th Group all forced practitioners to drill more than 90 minutes every day under the scorching sun.

    1. Using "Strict Control" to Persecute the Practitioners

The practitioners were not allowed a lunch break. They were forced to stay awake until midnight or even later. Then they were awakened at 6:00 a.m. to clean toilets and do long periods of standing. During the day they had to do extra heavy manual labor, such as pulling a wagon or a large flatbed tricycle, or a trolley fully loaded with mud bricks.

    1. Using collaborators to to Persuade Steadfast Practitioners to Renounce Falun Gong

In February 2001, Dong Haibo, head of the 2nd Squadron of the 6th Group, brought eight collaborators to the office where they jointly spoke out against me. I refuted their false reasoning and heresy.

    1. Using Excuses to Bring Practitioners to the Office For Verbal Abuse or Beatings

The camp guards and group leaders often brought practitioners to the office. If the practitioner refused to obey their orders he would be attacked, verbally abused, or subjected to corporal punishment, which often included wearing a cangue. A cangue is a wooden yoke that encases the neck and shoulders of the prisoner as punishment. The guards kicked, punched the practitioner or even used a wolf-tooth club (2) to beat the practitioners.

    1. Forcing Practitioners to Read Books Critical of Falun Gong Used for Brainwashing

I found five books that viciously slander Falun Gong on the bookshelves of the No. 1 Section of the 4th Group. These books were all written and compiled by related units of the Chinese Communist Party.

    1. Use of "Exposure and Criticizing Meetings" to Viciously Slander the Founder of Falun Gong and Practitioners

Zhao Zeyong, Yu Xingcai, and Deng Gang organized "Exposure and Criticizing Meetings" on a regular basis to openly attack the founder of Falun Gong and practitioners while I was held in various squadrons of Group 4, 5 and 6. The meetings were usually held on the drill grounds or in the canteens, and all the prisoners were forced to attend. Practitioners who stepped forward to shout truth-clarifying words were dragged out to the guards' office by the guards. They were then tortured with police ropes and electric batons, and the inmates kicked and punched them. Afterwards the administrative division extended their forced labor terms.

    1. Putting Practitioners in Solitary Confinement

Practitioner Mr. Wei Lang and some other practitioners were subjected to solitary confinement torture.

    1. Forcing Practitioners to Work or Stand in the Brick Kiln

The temperature in the brick kiln was normally several hundred degrees Celsius. During my detention at the 2nd Squadron of the 4th Group, I witnessed practitioners detained at the 6th Group being taken to the kiln of the 4th Group to "pass the test of physical labor."

    1. Xinhua Forced Labor Camp Invited the "Help-and-Teach Group" or the "Lecture Group" to Force Practitioners to Renounce Falun Gong

One day I learned from "Qidie," an internal newspaper at Xinhua Forced Labor Camp in Mianyang City, that the camp guards had adopted a set of guidelines for forcing the practitioners to renounce Falun Gong. I saw on television with my own eyes that the head of the notorious Masanjia Forced Labor Camp came to Xinhua Camp in person to visit and teach their brutal methods of persecution.

A psychologist from an institution of higher learning in Mianyang City was invited to Xinhua Camp to conduct psychological experiments. (I did not cooperate with the experiments). Specialists from Sichuan Academy of Social Sciences were invited to Xinhua to help "transform" the practitioners. I had to talk with them.

    1. Randomly Extending Steadfast Practitioners' Forced Labor Terms

When I was first sentenced to forced labor my term was extended three months simply because I signed my so-called "ideological report" as a Falun Gong practitioner and boycotted the manual labor. My second detention term was extended 55 days for boycotting the slave labor, exams, and the signature activities. Many steadfast practitioners had their terms extended for refusing to cooperate.

What I have listed above cannot represent all the crimes committed by Xinhua Forced Labor Camp in Mianyang City. It can only play the role of giving people a better understanding of the persecution. Xinhua Forced Labor Camp is indeed a hell on earth.

    Notes:

    (1) Personal cangue: Cangue, the name of an instrument of torture, is now used to indicate the person designated to supervise a practitioner.

    (2) Wolf-tooth club: A club with spikes on one end and a long handle on the other, formerly used as a weapon

Five Falun Gong Practitioners in Huaibin County, Henan Province Illegally Sentenced

On the morning of February 19, 2007, the authorities of the Chinese Communist Party in Huaibin County ordered the Huaibin County Court to sentence five Falun Gong practitioners, including Liu Jiyou, Jan Wenrong, Lu Hongyuan, Fu Lingyun and Wang Helin, on charges of damaging the social order by passing out Falun Gong truth-clarifying materials. The court sentenced Wang Helin to six years of imprisonment, Fu Lingyun got four years, Lu Hongyuan got three years, Jian Wenrong got three years, and Liu Jiyou was sentenced to two years.

The five practitioners filed separate appeals. Judge Bai Junjie of the Huaibin County Court, who was in charge of this case, told the practitioners that he was simply executing the decision of a higher court (the Xinyang City Court), so there was no use appealing. He talked the practitioners into withdrawing their appeals using persuasion and the threat of force. Only Fu Lingyun refused to withdraw the appeal and hired an attorney.

The practitioners were arrested around October 20, 2006. Huaibin County National Security Team Leader Han Dejun and other police officers used several brutal torture methods on the practitioners. They deprived the practitioners of sleep, handcuffed and hung them, used electric batons to shock them, and beat them and injected them with toxic drugs. The brutal torture caused Ms. Lu Hongyuan to suffer a massive hemorrhage, and she was near death. The police sent her to the hospital and then returned her to the detention center after she recovered. Fu Lingyun was brutally tortured and injected with poisonous drugs. The five practitioners are still detained at the Huaibin County Detention Center.

Ms. Zhou Zi Holds Hunger Strike for 51 Days in Beijing Women's Prison

To protest the frequent beatings and willful persecution at the hands of the guards, Ms. Zhou Zi, a Falun Gong practitioner from Beijing, has been on hunger strike for 51 days as of April 17.

After guard Zheng Yumei (female) beat Ms. Zhou, Deputy Warden Zhou Ying (female), who is in charge of persecuting practitioners, put on airs to investigate the event. The investigation was actually an arrangement to cover up the facts and check on their effect. Even the death of practitioner Ms. Dong Cuifang and the disablement of other practitioners due to torture has been concealed, and those responsible protected. This event is certainly not exceptional. The prison authorities have spread among the guards that Ms. Zhou is holding a hunger strike on her own initiative, that it has nothing to do with being beaten, and that her possible death will have nothing to do with the prison administration. The personnel of the prison are extremely indifferent to her hunger strike.

Ms. Zhou Zi's parents are both in their sixties. They got up at about 4:00 a.m. and traveled about 125 miles round-trip to the Beijing Women's Prison five times. Nevertheless, they were never allowed to see their daughter.

Sanhe City Court in Hebei Province Illegally Sentences Nine Practitioners

From February to July 2006,  Sanhe City Police Department, the National Security Group, the 610 Office, and Yanjiao District Police Department illegally arrested nine Falun Gong practitioners, including Ma Weishan, Zhou Chuanzhong, Zhang Deli, Zhou Zaitian, Di Wenzhu, Bai Yanxia, Du Fucang, Liang Baotian, and Zhang Liancun. The authorities put them into Sanhe Detention Center, Langfang Brainwashing Center, and Xianghe, intending to force them to give up their beliefs. When this tactic failed, these practitioners were sent back to the Sanhe Detention Center. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has employed people in the Sanhe Judicial and Public Security since last September to fabricate a case to illegally sentence these practitioners. On January 11, 2007, a court session was held. Many police officers were present in the Sanhe city Court that day, but practitioners denied all the witnesses put forth up by the persecutors. The court session lasted from 8:00 a.m. until 3:20 p.m. without any results.

On April 5, 2007, another trial for these practitioners was held in the Sanhe Court. The authorities plotted together to have the practitioners convicted and sentenced to prison terms. Regardless of practitioners' defenses, they were sentenced in less than one hour. Ma Weishan, Zhou Chuanzhong, Zhang Deli, Di Wenzhu, and Du Bocang were each sentenced to three and a half years in prison; Zhou Zantian, Bai Yanxia, and Zhang Liancun were each sentenced to three years in prison; and Liang Baotian was sentenced to three years in prison with five years of probation. Although they were allowed to appeal in ten days, it was revealed that Sanhe City Judicial and Public Security acted together to order all the attorneys, including individual law firms, not to accept any of these cases.
