  • Ms. Zhang Lianying from Beijing Missing After Surgery for Torture-Induced Cerebral Hemorrhage

Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Zhang Lianying from Beijing suffered a severe cerebral hemorrhage after being beaten at the Beijing Women's Forced Labor Camp. She was taken to the hospital for emergency surgery. On March 30, 2007, two days before being removed from the critical condition list for surgery patients, she was taken from the hospital. The forced labor camp said that she was transferred to the hospital at Beijing Tiantanghe Forced Labor Camp, but it refused her family members' requests to visit her at that hospital. Ms. Zhang Lianying's whereabouts are not known and her family is deeply worried.

At around 3:30 p.m. on March 20, 2007, Mr. Niu Jinping, Ms. Zhang Lianying's husband, received a phone call from guard Wang of the Beijing Women's Forced Labor Camp. He was asked to sign documents for an emergency surgery to be performed on Ms. Zhang Lianying. Mr. Niu Jinping rushed to Renhe Hospital, Daxing District, Beijing. There he found his wife in a coma. He asked the on-duty doctor, Xue, what had happened. Doctor Xue said that she had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and that it was most likely caused by being hit on the head. According to the doctor, Ms. Zhang Lianying not only had a severe cerebral hemorrhage, but also a lot of extravasated blood remained in the area of the head. She was in critical condition and there was a good chance of another cerebral hemorrhage after the surgery.

Ms. Zhang Lianying, after the surgery at Beijing Renhe Hospital

That morning the guards from the Training Unit of Beijing Women's Forced Labor Camp had ordered inmates to tighten a rope around Ms. Zhang Lianying's neck and cruelly beat her head. Ms. Zhang Lianying was imprisoned at the Training Unit for several months. She was barely recognizable after being tortured. This was the ninth time that the guards instructed the inmates to use this torture. In the past, twice she had become incontinent afterwards. This time, the rope became tighter and tighter and the fist-hitting heavier and heavier. Only after she suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and was in a critical condition did they stop the torture and take her to Beijing Renhe Hospital. The emergency surgery at the hospital saved her life.

Lead guard Wang from the Training Unit of the forced labor camp tried to cover up the real reason for her cerebral hemorrhage. He was very rude to her family. Even though Ms. Zhang Lianying's life was just saved and she was emaciated after several months of torture, the forced labor camp still had six people watching her at the "D-209, 30-31" inpatient room at the Neurosurgery Department around the clock. Whenever her husband and daughter went to visit her, they had to first get permission to visit from the forced labor camp. Also during each visit, the guards pulled the sheet all the way up to her chin to cover the injuries on her neck and body.

However, it could still be seen (see the photo above) that several tubes, thick or thin, were inserted into her head (her hair was removed to do the surgery). Some tubes were full of blood extracted from her head. Her head was covered by medical bandages. There was even a tube inserted in her nose.

The neurosurgeon at the Renhe Hospital said that Ms. Zhang Lianying's injury was very severe. It would take twelve days, which meant until April 1, 2007, for her to be completely out of danger. However, the forced labor camp secretly transferred her on March 30, 2007. On March 28, 2007, Section Chief Shi of the Management Section of the forced labor camp tricked Mr. Liu Jinping into going to the forced labor camp to get a visiting permit. But when Mr. Niu Jinping arrived, Shi claimed to be in meetings and made Mr. Niu wait for three hours. Finally, police from the Xiangheyuan Police Station, Chaoyang District, Beijing, who were responsible for Mr. Niu's residence area, along with staff from the Xiangheyuan 610 Office and officials from the Street Committee, came into the room. They said that Shi asked them to come. The head of the local 610 Office, Yang Yiguo, shouted at Mr. Niu Jinping, "Don't think that bringing the child with you will stop me from treating you the way I want to!" Surrounded and harassed by them, Mr. Niu did not get the permit. On March 30, 2007, the forced labor camp secretly transferred Ms. Zhang Lianying. They claimed that she was moved to the Beijing Tiantanghe Forced Labor Camp hospital. Later, when Mr. Niu Jinping and their daughter went to visit Ms. Zhang Lianying, the forced labor camp openly denied that her cerebral hemorrhage was caused by being hit on her head. Section Chief Shi said, "Who beat her? Who saw the beating?"

In fact, the torture of Ms. Zhang Lianying at the Beijing Women's Forced Labor Camp has the marks of the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) 610 Office. After Mr. Niu Jinping and another practitioner, Mr. Cao Dong, from Beijing met Mr. Edward McMillan-Scott, vice president of the European Parliament, who went to Beijing to investigate human rights violations in China in May, 2006, Mr. Cao Dong was secretly arrested by the CCP intelligence organization, the Beijing State Security Bureau. Mr. Niu Jinping and his three-year old daughter were constantly threatened and harassed by officials from the CCP 610 Office, State Security Bureau, Police, Street Committee, and legal organizations. Staff from the Liufangnanli 610 Office, Chaoyang District, Beijing and police from the Xiangheyuan Police Station threatened Mr. Niu Jinping many times, "Don't think we don't know how to handle you!" During the past months, Ms. Zhang Lianying was taken to the Training Unit of the forced labor camp, the most evil place in the forced labor camp. Inmates in that place were locked into a six-foot wide room, which had no windows. Everything, including eating, drinking, and using the toilet was done inside the tiny cell. The personal monitors, who were inmates assigned by the guards to watch and control the practitioners, frequently beat Ms. Zhang Lianying. Ms. Zhang held a hunger strike, refused to wear the forced labor camp uniform, and shouted "Falun Dafa is Good." Lead guard Cha then ordered the inmates to put a rope or belt tight around her neck and beat her.

Ms. Zhang Lianying's family members did not see her from the day she was taken from Beijing Renhe Hospital. Her family members have called the Beijing Women's Forced Labor Camp several times to request a visit, but every time Section Chief Shi said that they had to wait for permission from the top. Witnessing the brutal torture against her and knowing about the CCP's organ harvesting from living Falun Gong practitioners, Ms. Zhang Lianying's family is extremely worried.

All the kind people in the world please condemn the CCP persecution of Ms. Zhang Lianying and other Falun Gong practitioners! We appeal to people in Beijing who uphold justice to tell the people involved in persecuting practitioners that evil deeds will provoke retribution. Please help Ms. Zhang Lianying to obtain her freedom quickly!

Official Admits Witnessing Approximately Six Persecution Deaths of Falun Gong Practitioners at Zibo Forced Labor Camp in Shandong Province

According to information provided by a team leader at Zibo Forced Labor Camp, the labor camp had put clothes on five or six deceased Falun Gong practitioners who died from being persecuted. The following contains information about the practitioners who were persecuted at the labor camp. We hope that people from all over the world will pay attention to this incident, and help stop this evil persecution.

The Men's No. 2 Camp has two regular divisions that have detained Falun Gong practitioners (Division 7 and Division 8). Each division holds 110 to 120 detainees. Each division has a "strictly controlled team" gathering practitioners who refuse to be reformed. The practitioners in that team have to sit motionless, from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., a total of 18 hours per day. Criminal detainees monitor them. If one wants to use the bathroom he has to report, ask for permission and then go, after permission is granted. The practitioners were often beaten and also experienced verbal abuse. Criminal detainees once beat Fen Deshai, a 60-year-old practitioner, so severely that some of his teeth fell out. However, those criminals who beat him denied it.

For those who firmly believe in Falun Gong and those who have issued a solemn statement, police use handcuffs to lock them to their beds until midnight, when they are allowed to wash themselves and go to bed. They are forced to wake up at 3:00 a.m. in the summer, 5:00 a.m. in the winter. They are under close watch around the clock and are subjected to intense verbal abuse.

According to the law, the labor camp should require detainees to labor for no more than 30 to 36 hours per week. However, the camp not only doesn't follow the law, but also arranges labor work of 10-12 hours per day (from 5:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, and 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.). In addition, in the evening, the usual resting time, the labor camp often arranges meetings. Detainees do not have enough time to rest. The practitioners have brought this up to the camp leaders several times, but they do not listen, and instead make threats against the practitioners. The Judiciary Department has a rule that there be no labor on holidays, but the camp leaders sometime disobey the rule. Sometimes the practitioners have holidays off but the labor camp requires work on the weekends to compensate for those days.

There is a clinic at the labor camp for treating detainees who are sick, but the clinics does not have the proper equipment for anything other than measuring blood pressure, and some generic drugs for common colds. The labor camp does not allow seriously ill people to seek treatment at outside hospitals. In March 2006, one person was sick for a long time and was not allowed to go to the hospital. He ended being carried by several people to the clinic for some medication, and he died few days later.

At Division 7, there is a practitioner named Liang Shuxin, who in his twenties. Mr. Liang firmly believes in Falun Gong and refuses to be "reformed." As a result, he was forced to sit on a wooden stool daily until he was no longer able to sit. He has now lost feeling in his lower body, and requires help when using the bathroom. He nonetheless still remains in the strictly controlled team. He is bedridden, and the labor camp does not allow him to receive medical care outside the camp. Another practitioner, Mr. Xia Bingxuan, experiences dizziness due to hypertension, and must lean against the wall while walking. He also remains in the strictly controlled team.

Sun Nan, a team leader, said that since the persecution began in 1999, he has put clothes on five to six dead practitioners' bodies.

Six Falun Gong Practitioners Sentenced in Shanghai

In late March 2007, the Xuhui District Court in Shanghai illegally sentenced six Falun Gong practitioners. Ms. Bai Gendi was sentenced to four and a half years in prison, Mr. Zhou Licheng to six years, Ms. You Xiuyun received a six and a half year sentence, Ms. Wang Guifang three and a half years, and Ms. Zhou Qin and Ms. Yuan Xiufang each received two years, with two years suspended.

These six practitioners were arrested by the police during the Shanghai Six Summit (a summit between China, Russia and Central Asian countries) in late May 2006. Prior to their arrests, they had been followed, monitored and had their phones tapped by the police for a long time. To gather "evidence" and fabricate witness testimony, the Xuhui District Police Department, Procuratorate and Court as well as the Shanghai 610 Office kept postponing the court trial. The practitioners were imprisoned at the Xuhui District Detention Center for more than ten months before their first court trial on March 24, 2007. During that time, the Shanghai 610 Office closely guarded information about the practitioners' detention.

Ms. Bai Gendi was severely tortured at the Xuhui District Detention Center. Another reason that the Shanghai 610 Office postponed the court date was to keep the practitioners' family members from finding out that the practitioners had been tortured.

In the court session on March 24, 2007, the primary evidence for the charges against these six practitioners were nearly 500 unmailed letters to Shanghai government officials asking them not to involve themselves in the persecution against Falun Gong, and printed copies of the Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party found at Ms. You Xiuyun's home.

Four Falun Gong practitioners, including Mr. Zhou Licheng, Ms. Bai Gendi and Ms. You Xiuyun were handcuffed during the court trial. Although they were very thin due to the persecution in detention, the practitioners defended their innocence solemnly, telling the court that Falun Gong practitioners' truth clarification is a great benevolent deed to save people and that the charges against them were illegal.

The righteous words from the practitioners made the judge dare not sentence them in court. The trial was quickly closed. A few days later the trial continued, but the court did not notify any of the family members. It even prohibited the practitioners' attorneys from informing them. Ten days after the court trial, these six practitioners received their court sentences in the mail but many of their families never received the sentencing notice.

Among these six practitioners, some had been tortured by the Shanghai 610 Office many times before. For example, Ms. Bai Gendi, 52, was the first practitioner from Shanghai to be sent to a forced labor camp. In October 1999, the Shanghai 610 Office illegally sentenced her to two years of forced labor, using the excuse that she did the Falun Gong exercises outside the Shanghai Stadium after the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) began to persecute Falun Gong. The real reason was that her righteous thoughts and righteous actions had greatly influenced and inspired practitioners at the Shanghai Jiaotong University exercise center.

At the Shanghai City Women's Forced Labor Camp, Ms. Bai Gendi was handcuffed with her arms behind her back, forced to perform excessive labor, and not allowed to meet with or even write to her family. But she never gave up her Falun Gong practice. She opposed the persecution at every instance. People there witnessed the solemness of Falun Gong in her actions. Many people who knew Ms. Bai, including the guards, respected her very much. She left the forced labor camp openly and nobly in October, 2001, however three months later, in March 2002, Bai Gendi was arrested again and her home was ransacked. Then she was illegally sentenced to three years of forced labor because the Shanghai 610 Office wanted to make her an example for persecution.

In February 2005, Ms. Bai Gendi again openly left the forced labor camp. Four months later, in June 2005, she was once again arrested and her home was ransacked. She was imprisoned at Xuhui District Detention Center. A policeman held the Nine Commentaries CD found at her home and threatened her, "A single copy of the Nine Commentaries will get you fours years in prison. We have found so many copies at your home, you could spend your entire life in prison." Ms. Bai Gendi held a hunger strike and water fast for ten days to oppose the persecution. Her health was soon in critical condition. A month later, she was able to leave the detention center.

In early 2006, to avoid police interference and harassment, Bai Gendi left home and went into hiding. However, the Shanghai 610 Office did not let up on their persecution of her. After she was arrested in May 2006, they wanted to use the 500 letters as evidence that she was "coercing" others to write these letters.

Ms. You Xiuyun, 58, lives at Apt. 104, Building 89, the Third sub-division on Longshui South Road. Ms. You Xiuyun had colon cancer before she started practicing Falun Gong. After she began the practice, her colon cancer quickly disappeared. Her relatives and friends witnessed the miracle and wonderfulness of Falun Gong. After the CCP's persecution of Falun Gong began in 1999, Ms. You Xiuyun remained firm in Falun Gong. She was sentenced to forced labor in 2002. Before she was taken to the forced labor camp, the Shanghai 610 Office told her that because of her cancer history, she could go home immediately if she wrote a statement promising to no longer practice Falun Gong. Ms. You Xiuyun did not comply with them. While she was at the forced labor camp, her husband could not bear the pressure any longer, and had a stroke and passed away. The forced labor camp guards asked her daughter to write a letter to Ms. You saying that if she did not give up Falun Gong practice, her daughter would not acknowledge her as her mother. Actually, the forced labor camp used this method to break some practitioners. The guards would repeatedly read the letter in public to make the practitioner feel that their relatives no longer cared about them. Ms. You Xiuyun's daughter rejected this request. After that, the forced labor camp never answered her phone calls about her mother.

    Information about other sentenced practitioners:

Mr. Zhou Licheng, around 65, lives at building 15, Third Sub-division of the Yuannan region.
Ms. Zhou Qin, the daughter of Mr. Zhou Licheng. She was said to be a non-practitioner but she helped her elderly father.
Ms. Yuan Xiufang, 61, lives at Building 6, Huicheng Forth sub-division, Apt. 102.
Ms. Wang Guifang was sentenced two years of forced labor once.

Exposing the Persecution by Zhangjiakou City CCP Authorities

April 5 is "Qingming Day" [a traditional holiday on which Chinese people pay respects to deceased relatives at the cemetery]. On April 5, 2006, some Falun Gong practitioners put up truth-clarifying banners on their way to Zhangjiakou City's Wangjiazhai Public Cemetery and Xiaoxinzhuang Funeral Home. Practitioners displayed banners to mourn for fellow practitioners Ms. Song Cuiling from the Mining Machine Factory, Ms. Sun Yumei, Ms. Zhang Zhigen from the City Children's Cloth Embroidery Factory, Ms. Zhang Yuzhen from the Rubber Factory, Ms. Yang Yufang from Dongyaozi Village outside Zhangjiakou City, Ms. Fan Yaxiong from the 15th Middle School, and the other 3,000 Falun Gong practitioners killed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

The practitioners also displayed banners to tell people about the CCP's organ harvesting from Falun Gong practitioners and call people to withdraw from the CCP.

The local 610 Office agents were greatly alarmed by these banners and called it case "405." In April 2006, Zhangjiakou City Police Department and all local stations received instructions from Zhangjiakou City 610 Office to strengthen the effort to solve the "405" case.

Those who participated in fabricating charges and establishing the "405" case include the director of the 610 Office, the Secretary of the CCP Political and Judiciary Committee Qiao Denggui, the chief of the High-tech District Police Department Yang Zhisheng, the chief of Qiaodong District Police Department Zhang Xinliang and deputy chief Liu Lijun, Qiaoxi District Police Department's National Security Team's Zhong Senglin, director of  Qiaodong District Court Chen Yanqing, the chief prosecutor of Qiaodong District Procuratorate Guo Li, and the chief of  Nanzhan Police Station He Yuhui.

All the district police departments and local police stations cooperated in the arrests of seven Falun Gong practitioners between April 24 and May 2, 2006. Theses practitioners were secretly sent to a prison to be tortured.

At around 9 o'clock on the morning of April 24, the public security director of the Yanjiatun Village, Zhang Zhenyi, and the chief of the Shenjiatun Village Police Station, Li Yanjun, broke into Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Guo Shuying's home while she was cooking. They illegally arrested her and confiscated her property.

On April 27, police from Yaojiazhuang Police Station arrested practitioner Ms. Liu Jinye, a retiree of Nanzhan Train Station. They also confiscated her truth-clarifying materials and personal belongings.

On April 30, the chief of Nanzhan Police Station, He Yuhui, led uniformed police and three plainclothes officers to arrest Ms. Chen Aihong at her home. Three months prior she had been released after a year of persecution in the Gaoyang Forced Labor Camp in Baoding City, Hebei Province.

At around 5:00 p.m. on May 1, Zhong Senglin, from the National Security Team of the Qiaoxi District Police Department, led police from the Xinhua Street Police Station to arrest practitioner Ms. Ji Xiumei at her home. They also arrested her husband and two brothers and took them to the Xinhua Street Police Station. They confiscated Ms. Ji's Falun Gong books, more than 900 yuan in cash, and Ms. Ji's wage card (which has since been returned to her).

At the same time, police from Mingdenan Police Station arrested practitioner Ms. Zhang Zhongli at her apartment. They also took Falun Gong materials and banners, and arrested practitioner Mr. Zhang Fugui, who was visiting Ms. Zhang at the time. The next morning police illegally detained Zhang Zhongli's boss and interrogated him. They also confiscated Falun Gong books from her boss's wife (also a practitioner). Due to special circumstances, the police failed to arrest the boss's wife.

At around 9 o'clock on the morning of May 2, police from Qiaodong District Police Department and May the First Street Police Station arrested practitioner Ms. Zhao Xiaolu and confiscated her property.

The chief of Zhangjiakou City High-tech District Police Department Yang Zhisheng and others used all kinds of tactics to strengthen their efforts in persecuting Falun Gong practitioners. They recalled practitioners Liu Jinye, who was sent to Gaoyang Forced Labor Camp in Baoding City and Chen Aihong, who was sent to the brainwashing class in Zhangjiakou City Law School. They also arrested other practitioners and brought charges against all seven practitioners for the "405" case in the Qiaodong District Procuratorate in Zhangjiakou City.

The chief prosecutor of Qiaodong District Procuratorate, Guo Li, the director of Qiaodong District Court, Chen Yanqing, the judge Wang Yian, the assistant judge Meng Qingyou, and Wang Shuaxiang, secretly tried these practitioners and rapidly closed the case in late 2006. They illegally sentenced Falun Gong practitioners Ji Xiumei, Zhang Guifu, Guo Shuying, Liu Jinye, Chen Aihong, Zhao Xiaolu and Zhang Zhongli to between four and ten years in prison. Practitioner Zhang Guifu was sent to the Yidong Prison in Tangshan City, Hebei Province. The other six practitioners were sent to Shijiazhuang City Women's Prison in Luquan County, Hebei Province.
