Mr. Han Chonghui Goes On a Hunger Strike to Protest Persecution

Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Han Chonghui from Panjin City, Liaoning Province has been detained and persecuted by the local police for eight years. On July 20, 1999, Mr. Han went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong, but he was illegally detained for four days. On October 20, 1999, he appealed again for Falun Gong and was detained for over three months. In December 2000, because he again went to Beijing to appeal, he was illegally sentenced to forced labor for two years. In June 2003, he was arrested by the head of Lujia Village Police Station, Wang Dianjun. Mr. Han was beaten and illegally held in the detention center. Han Chonghui escaped after 12 days. He had 4,100 yuan in his pocket when he was arrested, but that money was taken by the policemen, as were his mobile phone and his car.

On October 20, 2007, Mr. Han went to Shenyang on business. When he was buying an electric dictionary for his daughter, he was arrested by a dozen police officers from the Panjin Security Division. Another Falun Gong practitioner, Zhang Yawei from Panjin, and a practitioner from Jinzhou were arrested as well. The police took ten thousand yuan and a mobile phone from Han Chonghui. At around 5 o'clock that afternoon, the police illegally ransacked Han Chonghui's house. They confiscated a picture of the founder of Falun Gong and Mr. Han's parents' two copies of the book Zhuan Falun. The police again detained Han Chonghui in the city detention center.

The police officers who were involved in these incidents include the National Security Team leader of Panjin, Pan Zhongze; the National Security Team leader of Shuangtai District, Panjin City, Miao Qishan; police officers from the Red Flag Police Station of Shuangtai District, Panjin City, including Chen Xuejun, Zhang Zhen and others.

After Han Chonghui was taken to the detention center, the police notified his family about Visiting Day, but when the family arrived, the police asked for money before they would be allowed to see Mr. Han. After the family gave the police 370 yuan, the officers told the family that the money was for room and board, and then did not allow the family to see Mr. Han. The family was forced to leave.

The family went to the Red Flag Police Station of Panjin City to ask about Han Chonghui's whereabouts. The police told them, "We can treat Falun Gong practitioners however we want. Your appeal won't be accepted anywhere."

The family then went to the National Security Group of Panjin City, where leader Pan Zhongze, deputy leader Li Yonghua, and the leader of Shuangtai District National Security Team Miao Qishan, kept shifting responsibility to one other. Mr. Han's parents, who are over 80 years old, climbed five floors of the building a few times a day looking for their son. Now their spirits are broken.

On October 25, police from the National Security Team of Panjin City sent Han Chonghui to Benxi Education (Brainwashing) Center, but he was turned away. Mr. Han was then sent to a brainwashing center in Fushun for persecution.

Han Chonghui has been holding a hunger strike to protest his illegal detention and persecution. He is in critical condition.

The Persecution of Ms. Shi Yun and Her Husband, Mr. Jiang Yuliu, in Kunming City

Ms. Shi Yun and Mr. Jiang Yuliu are teachers in the 2nd Vocational Secondary School in Kunming City, Yunnan Province. They individually wrote public letters to their school and the Education Commission in June 2004, telling of the immense mental and physical improvements they experienced after they began practicing Falun Gong. They pointed out t was wrong to persecute Falun Gong and hoped that their colleagues and supervisors could understand the truth of the situation.

Wan Jianguo, the head of the school, colluded with staff from the 610 Office and Panlong District Police Station in Kunming City to harass the couple. In July 2004, the police from the National Security Team in Panlong  District and school leaders deceived Mr. Jiang Yuliu and took him to Dapingba 2nd Forced Labor Camp.

His pregnant wife, Ms. Shi Yun, went from one place to another, campaigning for his cause. She clarified the truth about her husband being persecuted to the authorities at the National Security Group in Panlong  District, the Public Security Bureau, the 610 Office, etc., and demanded his immediate release. The authorities pressured and even threatened her. In particular, Wan Jianguo actively cooperated with the 610 Office and constantly threatened to dismiss her from the school.

Just before the delivery of the baby, Shi Yun requested many times that her husband be allowed to come home and help take care of their baby. Officials of the 2nd Forced Labor Camp agreed to let him go to the hospital to visit his wife, under the condition that the school would pick him up afterwards. But Wan Jianguo and other school leaders strongly objected. Ms. Shi had to care for the newborn alone and went through a long and difficult two years and seven months.

The 2nd Vocational Secondary School officials did not arrange any work for Mr. Jiang after he was released in December 2006. He went to the school and Education Commission many times, but the school officials kept shifting the responsibility to others with all kinds of excuses. For more than ten months, the family of three had to rely on Shi Yun's income alone.

On September 30, 2007, the police from Xiaonan Police Station in Wuhua District, Kunming City arrested Ms. Shi as she was mailing a letter and subsequently unlawfully searched their home and confiscated their property. Six people not wearing police uniforms or presenting any identification seized a laptop, a desktop, a printer, and a book. They also took Ms. Shi to the detention center in Wuhua District.

On November 1, with the approval of the Procuratorate in Wuhua District, Kunming City, the police continued to illegally detain Ms. Shi Yun.
