  • Interview with Charles Lee: CCP Stops at No Evil in Its Persecution of Falun Gong (Photo) Part I

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP)'s effort to forcefully change people's hearts has repeatedly failed. After spending three years in Chinese prison, U.S. citizen Charles Lee returned to the United States last month. Charles said that despite all the persecution he was subjected to, he always treated himself as a practitioner. He kept his firm belief and refused to cooperate with the evil.

Charles Lee returned home last month after being detained in China for 3 years

In January 2003, Charles Lee traveled to China to clarify the truth about Falun Gong. He was arrested the minute he stepped off the plane in the Guangzhou City Airport. He was sentenced to 3 years in prison and detained in Yuhuatai Prison of Nanjing City (Nanjing Prison). During his detention, he suffered mental and physical torture. On January 21, 2006, he was finally released and returned to San Francisco. He recently gave an interview about the persecution he was subjected to in China.

Thinking about the deceived Chinese people

Reporter: Welcome back, Charles. Can you tell us how you feel right now?

Charles: Thank you. It is good to be back, but I have mixed feelings. On one hand, I feel relaxed after I returned to freedom and was again among my friends. While in China's prison system, I was under constant duress. On the other hand, I feel deep sorrow for Falun Gong practitioners who still suffer persecution in China, Chinese people who were deceived by the propaganda, and people who are scared of the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP)'s power. Please, do not forget that I was illegally sentenced and tortured. I appealed three times and did not receive justice. In order to restore justice, I have much to do.

Choosing return to China to clarify the truth instead of a comfortable life

Reporter: You lived a comfortable life in the U.S., and you can practice Falun Gong here. Why did you decide to go to China?

Charles: I felt the deepest responsibility to clarify the truth to people in China. First, I was born in China, so many of my friends and relatives are there. Secondly, I felt that I would be extremely selfish, given that I'm a practitioner, if I'm not actively involved in stopping the persecution. Thirdly, any person who has a sense of justice would hold the thought of helping the Chinese people, who are deceived by the state controlled media.

Reporter: Can you describe the most difficult time you experienced while in prison?

Charles: There were three phases during my incarceration. In phase I, I was detained in Yangzhou Detention Center. Before they could sentence me to a prison term they had to go through the formality of a trial. Because of many people's attention, the persecutors did not dare to torture me as brutally as I was later in Nanjing Prison.

    Sleep deprivation for 92 hours

(Charles continues) However, they did use sleep deprivation for 92 hours to torture me. They also forced me to watch videos slandering Falun Gong and put handcuffs on me. An informer told me that they originally had wanted to charge me with practicing Falun Gong. But, because I am a U.S. citizen, they concocted a story instead that I was going to "damage media equipment." They did stay away from mentioning Falun Gong, as such a charge would involve the issue of freedom of belief. During the trial, they did not allow me to defend myself or provide evidence to disprove their charge. Even under Chinese law, the trial was illegal -- it was merely a "show trial."

During Phase II, I was detained in Nanjing Prison. After I was detained Yangzhou Detention Center for 3 months, they sentenced me to a 3-year prison term. They had already planned how to torture me during those three years. In the beginning, they tried to turn me against Falun Gong and give up my practice.

Mental torture: being monitored around the clock

This was the most difficult stage. The persecutors used all kinds of methods at their disposal, including physical torture and brainwashing. They put me into a small room. Guards and inmates ganged up and forced me to watch videos slandering Falun Gong. I refused and tried to walk out of the room, but they forcefully pushed me back and held me down. When I closed my eyes, they tortured me. Sometimes they held "criticizing conferences" against Falun Gong. I tried to walk out and was forcefully restrained.

They also tortured me mentally by putting pressure on me. Usually, ten to twelve people monitored me around the clock. Sometimes when I woke up at night, I saw someone staring at me, which was very disturbing. Wherever I went, someone followed right behind me. (Charles showed the reporter how close they followed him.)

I was used to large personal space from living in the U.S. At that time, a guy taller and stronger than I followed me everywhere, including when I used the restroom. He put his nose into every aspect of my life. Sometimes when I sat on my bed with my legs crossed, he immediately pulled my legs straight. When I asked him why, he said because you practice Falun Gong, you could not sit like that. I protested and said, 'I have the freedom to practice.' Anyway, I wasn't practicing. But he insisted. You can't imagine the feeling, being under this kind of pressure at all times, and having every movement monitored. It was as if I did not have room to even breathe. This is actually a form of mental torture.

The persecutors took turns to brainwash me

After some time, a guard was brought in on orders from above. He forced me to talk with him. When I refused, he cursed at me, calling me a criminal and forced me to obey. They also took turns to brainwash me. First they forced me to watch a movie that slanders Falun Gong, and then guards talked with me in groups, one group after another, without giving me any time to rest.

Charles remained firm in his belief, in spite of the methods used by the CCP

From June to December in 2003, the persecutors in Nanjing Prison used the above methods to torture me, in an effort to make me renounce my belief. I was firm in my belief, and knew that I was doing a righteous thing. Therefore, their torture made me even more firm in my belief. Realizing this, the persecutors changed their methods.

Beginning in January 2004, they tried to have me agree to the terms of the trial, without mentioning Falun Gong. They used many methods to make me admit that tapping into the TV network to clarify the truth violated Chinese laws. For example, they used the rules and regulations of the prison to try to subtly sway me. They hoped that I would admit to being a criminal. They also asked me to fill out criminal's appraisal forms and take my fingerprints. I refused, but they forcefully took my fingerprints. They also forced me to memorize the rules and regulations of the prison. Cooperation with the persecutors would have meant that I admitted that I was guilty as charged.

Twenty-One-Year Old College Graduate Suffers Mental Collapse in Shaanxi Province Women's Labor Camp

In the beginning of March 2006, a 21-year-old female Falun Gong practitioner suffered a mental breakdown due to the intense pressure she received in less than a month of detention in the Second Ward of the Shaanxi Province Women's Forced Labor Camp. She had just graduated from the university, and was very innocent and full of life.

Many evil methods are being used in the Shaanxi Province Women's Labor Camp to torture Falun Gong practitioners. All firmly practicing practitioners are locked separately in 2-3 offices or on the second floor of the South Building for long term mental and physical torture. Some practitioners' spines were beaten to the point of being fractured; some practitioners had their hair pulled by guards and then slammed against the wall, resulting in a concussion and hair being uprooted by the handful; some practitioners were pressed down by several guards, and then their pubic hair would be pulled out one by one; some practitioners' front teeth were knocked out by guards.

At the beginning of March 2006, a 21-year-old Falun Gong practitioner suffered a mental breakdown due to the extreme pressure she received in less than a month's time. In order to cover up their crimes, the guards said that it was because her mother (also a detained practitioner) had refused to pay attention to her. Her mother was locked on the third floor of the Third Ward, and the young woman was locked on the second floor of the Second Ward. The camp had never let them get close to each other. Their family members have requested them to release this young lady for medical treatment many times, but the camp administration refuses, in fear that their crimes will be exposed. This poor girl is still locked in the camp without any treatment.

When practitioners first enter the camp, they are forced to watch videos and read books that slander Falun Gong and Teacher Li. They are put through brainwashing in order to make them give up the practice. For those very solid and righteous practitioners, they use many means to torture them, such as depriving them of sleep, not allowing them to use the toilet, and forcing them to stand facing the wall for a long time. One cruel method is cuffing both hands onto the stair railing, putting the practitioners in a position so that they cannot sit or stand. Some practitioners have been tortured by being cuffed onto the door frames or heating pipes for 2-4 weeks at a time. Guards are using 3-4 prisoners as their designated monitors. They rush to each practitioner when the guards shout, stuff a towel in the practitioner's mouth, and then punch and kick her. When practitioners were being force-fed, the guards would hit their heads with a bowl, cutting their faces. Some guards said openly, "The higher-ups told us when they came to inspect that we should not beat you with our bare hands, but we can beat you with batons, or shock you with electric batons."

Practitioners locked up here have to do heavy labor for 17-19 hours per day until 2-3 a.m., and they can only sleep for 3 hours. Steadfast practitioners are absolutely not allowed family visits, even if their families came from far away. They said these practitioners "did not behave well." In fact, they are very afraid that their torture crimes will be exposed to the outside world, especially through the Minghui/Clearwisdom website. Therefore, they strictly block the news from coming out.

Steadfast Falun Gong practitioners such as Ms. Lan Cuilian, Ms. Li Suping, Ms. Ma Jie, Ms. Luo Changyun, and Ms. Wang Xinlian have been tortured for long periods of time, and their terms were extended from one to seven months. One female guard, Zhang Xiaoqin in the Third Ward, has locked Ms. Wang Xinlian and Ms. Luo Changyun in solitary confinement since 2005 and used all sorts of torture methods on them.

The CCP claims that they are running the country with a legal system and that this is the best human rights period in history. On the surface the camp propaganda clamors, "Follow the Law in a Civilized Manner, Manage the Camp with a Conscience," but they are doing evil things that cannot bear the light of day.

Falun Gong Practitioner Lu Shulin Is in Critical Situation at Jilin's 2nd Prison

After being illegally arrested and brutally tortured in Jilin's 2nd Prison, Falun Gong practitioner Lu Shulin is now in critical situation. Because Mr. Lu's family cannot find people to intercede on his behalf and did not bribe the police, policemen Zhang Heng and Wang Lianfa refuse to release Mr. Liu for medical treatment despite his dire condition. They even said openly, "Without good connections and money, you will have to wait!" Mr. Lu's family is desperately worried about his condition.

In February 8, Lu Shulin's family was advised by guard Zhang Guilin to bail him out for medical treatment. Zhang also told them to find the two policemen Zhang Heng and Wang Lianfa.

When his family members found the two people, one of them said, "It is lunch time, you should invite us for lunch." In the afternoon, Wang Lianfa said to them, "You go back to the police station and ask them to sign the document to accept him." "Don't you need to complete any paperwork?" Lu's family asked. "No!" they said. But when Mr. Lu's family went back to ask the police chief, Zhang Dezhi, to sign the document, Zhang said, "Are you kidding? Without any documents from the prison? If I am unaware of the condition of Lu Shulin, how can I sign the document? They are just trying to avoid the responsibility!" The family immediately called the two policemen, who said, "If you cannot get the paperwork from the police station, we cannot do anything for you." Mr. Lu's family realized that the police were only giving them the runaround.

On February 20, 2006, Lu Shulin's family called Zhang and Wang, wanting to know when Mr. Lu will be released. "No sooner than two or three months!" the police answered. "How could it be? Lu Shulin is now in critical condition. If you do not release him quickly, he may die inside the station," his family said. "Then that is the case. You are not the only one we work for," the police answered. "Isn't it the police's job to take care of and work for the people?" Lu's family said. "Without good connections and money, you will have to wait!" the police repeated angrily.

Dr. Liu Ping, a Physician Employed at Hengshui City's 2nd Hospital in Hebei Province, Suffers Persecution

Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Liu Ping was a doctor in Hengshui City's 2nd Hospital in Hebei Province. After the persecution started on July 20, 1999, Ms. Liu Ping refused to give up her belief in Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. Former hospital head Zhang Yong put Liu Ping under 24-hour monitoring for a whole week. He also tried to force Ms. Liu to write a guarantee statement give up Falun Gong and hand over all her Falun Gong books. In addition, Liu was transferred to the physical therapy section on September 18, 1999, where she was exposed to large quantity of radiation.

The daily exposure to radiation brought on edema for Liu Ping and swelling and bleeding of her gums. Her menstrual flow gradually decreased, her gums began to shrink and she experienced profound weakness.

Section head Wang Xinting, who was in charge of physical therapy, verbally abused Liu Ping. On December 4, 2002, Wang scratched Liu's face, claiming that she did so because menopause made her unreasonable and she couldn't control herself. The scratch was so deep that the dermatologist thought it would leave a scar. Hospital head Zhang Yong would not allow the deputy head to handle Wang Xinting's case, saying, "Liu Ping is a practitioner of Falun Gong. There's no way to handle this matter."

On October 9, 2001, Zhang Yong ordered Wang Xinting to arrange Liu Ping to work the afternoon shift by herself. Right before the end of the afternoon shift, certain individuals arrested Liu and took her to a brainwashing center. Yuan Jinlong from the brainwashing center realized that he was unable to change Liu's mind. He then urged some others to sexually harass her.

October 2, 2002 marked 100 days since Liu's brother passed away. Ms. Liu Ping took that day off to take care of her parents at home. She was afraid that her parents would not be able to withstand the sadness of losing their son. Nevertheless, Zhang Yong sent someone from the hospital to Liu's home and ordered Liu to go to the hospital right away. Liu told them that she had to stay home and could not go. On October 3, when Zhang Yong and Wang Xinting tried to fire her from her job, Liu exposed their persecution of her. The hospital deputy head Jin Hui accompanied Liu Ping to her office for work, but they saw Wang Xinting there, getting ready to work Liu's shift. Jin asked Wang, "Why are you here?" Wang was unable to come up with an answer.

On June 24, 2005, Liu Ping joined the protest in front of the municipal building and was arrested and locked up in the Hengshui City Detention Center.

After Liu's release from the detention center on September 6, 2005, Zhang Yong did not mention at all the promise that he made to her and her family, which was to reassign her to the inpatient section. When Liu requested to first go to the Internal Medicine Section Outpatient Service to get trained by chief doctor Xu, Zhang replied, "It will create bad blood if I permit a person who was just released from detention to learn from Dr. Xu right away," adding that there was no opening at the Internal Medicine Section.

Since June 24, 2005, Dr. Liu has been prohibited from working. Zhang Yong stopped her salary. Dr. Liu suffered personal insult and damage to her reputation at  Hengshui's 2nd Hospital. She was twice arrested while at her job. All of her family members feared that Liu might not come home one day because of the persecution.

Three Practitioners Detained at an Inner Mongolia Forced Labor Camp

In Baokang Town, Tongliao City. Three female practitioners were subjected to illegal property search, were arrested and put into a forced labor camp. Another Falun Gong practitioner was sentenced to six years of forced labor, in absentia. She has stayed away from home to avoid certain arrest.

On November 5, 2005, Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Ju Liling's home was searched, and she was detained. Police confiscated personal belongings, including her bank deposit book, showing savings to purchase an apartment and her ID. The arresting officials intimidated her family and demanded that they report any Falun Gong practitioner who might show up. Their coercive threats were the reason for Liling's 63-year-old husband becoming ill. He had a relapse of his old illness and cannot live without assistance. He had spent a thousand yuan for medical expenses, and for lack of proper care became very thin. Ms. Ju had been detained for over 40 days.

Ms. Ju had many health problems before she started practice Falun Gong. As a small child she lost the sight in her right eye and had limited vision in her left eye. After beginning the practice, her illnesses disappeared and she became healthy. Following her arrest, she had to sleep on a cold bed in the freezing winter, use cold water, and stay in custody without her belongings for two days, which made her kidney problem recur. She became frail and could not live independently. Suffering from the huge mental pressure, she soon lost sight in her left eye. The detention center refused to accept her because she needed personal care. After extorting 2,000 Yuan from her family, the detention center officials released her. She was not issued a receipt for the money. The police said they would detain her again when she recovered.

Wang Chunlin, an agent from the Baokang County National Security Group and a guard where Ms. Ju was detained, extorted 2,000 Yuan from her second husband to pay for Ms. Ju's release. Wang took the money without issuing a receipt. The follow is more background information on Ms. Ju.

Ms. Ju's poor vision made her handicapped. Her first husband died at a young age. To make a living, she was selling goods and tried to financially support her son through college. Because her son still owed the college 8,000 Yuan in tuition and fees, he was not issued his diploma. Financial difficulties prevented him from pursuing graduate studies. An outstanding debt of 8,000 Yuan was a large sum for this handicapped mother, as her annual income was about 2,500 Yuan. It was during these times that Ms. Ju started practicing Falun Gong. Falun Gong gave her back her life. She regained stable vision and was able to support her son through three years of college. Many people in Baokang Town who had helped her were amazed by her recovery after Falun Gong practice and knew that Falun Gong had given her a new life. People were shocked and angry when they heard she was detained, persecuted and fined, and they demanded justice.

Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Zhang Shujie, 34 years old, was an electrician. She would do whatever job she was assigned to do and considered others first under any circumstances. When the factory made a special product, she was given the work because the management knew that she was trustworthy. Upon hearing that Ms. Zhang was sentenced to three years forced labor, the factory colleagues were sad and worried. During the eventual detention, following a hunger strike, the police admitted Ms. Zhang to Qi hospital for force-feeding. Many Qiyi hospital workers have witnessed this persecution.

Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Li Guizhi, in her 40s, used to be an employee of the 2nd Grain Supply Center. People who know her describe her as a kind person who is full of compassion. She is well liked by her co-workers, as well. She never argued or got upset with others. People were stunned when they heard that she was sentenced to three years of forced labor. Ms. Li, who went on an eight-day hunger strike, was later sent to a hospital to be force-fed.

Ms. Zhang and Ms. Li have experienced gross abuse from beatings at the hands of criminals, been subjected to force-feeding and made to wash in extremely cold water in the wintertime.
