  • Additional Information on Zhao Fenglian's Death Due to Persecution

Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Zhao Fenglian suffered brutal persecution in the Lanzhou Women's Prison in Gansu Province. Ms. Zhao passed away on December 22, 2005.

Because of torture, Zhao Fenglian was unable to eat for over four months before her death. The jail wardens nearly killed her during force-feeding of concentrated salt water, causing her to fall into unconsciousness. Afraid to bear responsibility for Zhao's death, the wardens sent her to the hospital. She was diagnosed with malignant pancreatic cancer there. The prison authorities released Zhao Fenglian on bail to seek medical care. When Zhao's relatives came to take her home, the wardens noticed that Zhao's health had slightly improved. The authorities then rescinded Zhao's conditional release and told her relatives, "Come back again in a few days! You should bring an ash urn." More persecution followed, and it rendered Zhao truly unable to recover. Only then did the prison authorities release Zhao.

Ms. Zhao in the Jinchuan Company Staff Hospital

Zhao was in good health before the persecution. When we visited her in the hospital, Zhao was so emaciated that her face had turned into a triangular shape. Her skin was a sickly yellow color. She was put in room 8 on the third floor in the Jinchuan Company Staff Hospital in Jinchang City.

We asked, "How are you? How long have you been unable to eat?" "Over four months," she replied, "I was severely injured by the force-feeding with salt water." "How did you get bruised there?" we continued. "It was burned by a hot-water bottle. I had felt very cold all over my body, so I held a hot-water bottle too tightly. I could not feel my skin, and it blistered." We then inquired if she remembered her persecutors. "I remember them," she whispered and then stopped talking. She clasped the hand of a fellow practitioner and murmured in a low voice, "It has not been easy, not been easy!"

Based on our observation, the bruises on Ms. Zhao's chest and back were most likely from beatings with electric batons. The black dots on her legs seem to be coming out from under the skin, possibly due to some sort of toxin injected into her.

When relatives took Zhao Fenglian home from the Lanzhou Prison, the guards forced them to sign several release guarantees. Guards also threatened Ms. Zhao's relatives to remain silent about her persecution.

Zhao Fenglian told us that a 70-year-old fellow practitioner was illegally imprisoned in the Gansu Provincial Women's Prison. This practitioner developed calcium deposits in one of her internal organs, so the prison had to send her to a hospital for treatment. After the surgery, however, she was immediately sent back to the Gansu Provincial Women's Prison for more persecution.

One time, a fellow practitioner whispered to Ms. Zhao, "Falun Dafa is good". Zhao Fenglian became very frightened and stopped the practitioner. She said, "Don't let the guard hear!" It was obvious that she had been traumatized by the violent persecution at the prison.

Brainwashing at the "Legal Education Center" in the Weiningying Forced Labor Camp

The "Legal Education Center," a former drug rehabilitation center at the Weiningying Forced Labor Camp in Benxi City, is notorious for its persecution of Falun Gong practitioners. Only male practitioners are persecuted there. The following individuals are the chief culprits who persecute, torment and abuse practitioners at the Center: Chen Zhongwei, the camp's political Party secretary; Liu Shaoshi, head of the Legal Education Center; Zhao Shichun, the political head; Zheng Tao, deputy head of the Mental Correction Office; Guo Tieying, deputy head of labor camp in charge of legal education; and group heads Ding Huibo and Han Liang.

When practitioners are first sent to the labor camp, they are held at the Affiliated Division for a while. The guards at the "Legal Education Center" often communicate with the division guards and observe the detainees. Those who follow the labor camp policies unquestioningly are quickly sent to the "Legal Education Center," because they are considered more likely to be brainwashed. Those who do not fully cooperate with the guards are sent to the Center at a later date.

When the practitioners first arrive at the Center they are given a written "test" containing a few questions involving Falun Gong. They are not forced to answer the test. The guards or collaborators with the Administration Committee watch a video with the practitioners. The video consists of reports from soldiers who fought in the Sino-Vietnam War. This war, in which the Communist Party used people as cannon fodder, seems to have no connection to psychological "reform." Life at the labor camp thus begins.

The practitioners get up at 6:00 a.m. and gather outside to do morning exercises. They are forced to sing propaganda songs such as "Learn from Lei Feng, the Role Model" and "Returning from Target Practice." Liu Shaoshi and other labor camp officials patrol each room as the practitioners eat lunch. The Center is administered in military style. There is a one-hour military training course in the afternoon that consists of running, goose- stepping and shouting slogans, among other things. There are also at least one or two sports classes each week that mostly consists of basketball practice.

The daily routine at the Center creates a falsely lax atmosphere for newly arrived practitioners. Officials such as Chen Zhongwei, Zheng Tao and Ding Huibo often chat with the practitioners. They also arrange activities such as Chinese chess, poker, and ping-pong, and contests are held during holidays. The guards also take part. The practitioners are forced to work each day, mostly making diodes by hand. Work hours are long. Sometimes the practitioners work until 9:00 p.m. Some practitioners are deceived by this superficial lax control due to lack of a deep understanding of the persecution. They cooperate with the perpetrators, sometimes not being aware of it.

The most critical brainwashing methods of the Center are used despite the laxness. For example, the practitioners are forced to watch TV news, write "homework," take tests and recite 36 laws and regulations each day. They are also forced to watch the Falun Gong-slandering TV series Life is Innocent and sing songs such as Lambs Lost and Mom, I'm Back. Guo Tieying and Zhao Shichun gave "law classes" that mostly slander Falun Gong. Zheng Tao wrote questions after the lecture for practitioners to take back to their room to discuss among themselves. Each practitioner is forced to give his standpoint, which is recorded by the completely brainwashed group head. The group head gives a summary and answers the questions. The answers must conform to the brainwashing standards the Center considers to be correct. If the practitioners give their own answers, the group heads and head of the labor camp take turns talking to and threatening the practitioners until they give the slanderous answers. Many practitioners said things against their conscience in this environment. In their own words, they were trying to "slip through." Whenever someone is brainwashed, the guards hold a public attack conference in a classroom on the second floor, where the brainwashed person is called to the podium to read a "criticizing statement." The guards and collaborators get together and take videos and pictures. After the conference, the perpetrators discuss how the brainwashed person "walked their reform path firmly."

In order to brainwash the practitioners, the Center formed a "Reeducation Assistance" Group. This consists of guards and members of the Administration Committee and also includes three hired people. Chen Zhongwei and Liu Shaoshi personally instruct the "Reeducation Assistance Group" and badger the determined practitioners day and night. They use violence, threats and insults to carry out the brainwashing. These people do their all to advocate the Communist Party's devious theories and principles in this atmosphere of violence and threats. They force the practitioners to double-cross their legs. They tie the practitioners up and slap their faces, or they put Teacher's pictures underneath the practitioners' seats.

Three hired women often use very base means to torture the practitioners. Many people have been "reformed" against their conscience. If the perpetrators don't achieve their goal, they use even more severe tortures. They first detain the determined practitioners in a solitary confinement cell, a small room in which only one person can fit. There is one dilapidated quilt, made of small pieces of cotton. The practitioner sleeps on the cracked wood floor. One incandescent light is turned off during the day and turned on throughout the night. The room is under 24-hour surveillance. Solitary confinement is located on the first floor of the Affiliated Division, and the inmates are responsible for monitoring the practitioners.

Tortures are administered on the second floor. The abusers stretch the practitioners, use the Death Bed Torture, the Tiger Bench, electric shock, and Sitting on a Plane, which is when they tie the practitioner's feet and hang him upside down.

The Center has a large torture-administering division. They torture the practitioners during the day, lock them in solitary confinement at night, and continue to torture them the following day. Practitioner Jiao Lin was forced to remain in one posture for 20 days around the clock. Practitioner Yan Bo was forced to stay in one posture for 17 days around the clock. They are forbidden to sleep. The inmates take turns watching them. The guards failed to achieve their goal even after exhausting their stock of tortures. The authorities transferred practitioners Jiao Lin and Yan Bo to a forced labor camp in Jinzhou City in the spring of 2005, both to be further persecuted and to avoid their positive impact on others. Two other practitioners who were transferred to the Weiningying Forced Labor Camp from a labor camp in Jinzhou City were brainwashed in less than 15 days. The captors often transfer practitioners to improve the "reform rate." Many practitioners who were determined in Dandong and Panjin were "reformed" at Weiningying Forced Labor Camp.

The Center personnel strictly control the practitioners who refuse to give in to brainwashing. They assign one or two people to follow each practitioner at all times, except while they are sleeping. They strictly limit the practitioner's words and actions and forbid him to speak with others. Monitors are installed in each room, including the restroom. The monitors, which are on 24 hours a day, can record sound and capture images. They have also arranged for spies to live with the practitioners. These spies report the practitioner's slightest deed and words to the guards. Practitioner Sun Tiechun from Niuxintai was nicknamed "Iron Man" by the inmates assigned to watch him. He announced many times that he would persist in Falun Gong practice. He succeeded! He was tortured many times and his hearing was impaired. He also had difficulty moving his arms. He refused to cooperate with his tormentors. He was held the longest of all the practitioners and was in solitary confinement at the Center. His sentence was illegally extended by a very long time.

The Center authorities cruelly force-feed practitioners who hold hunger strikes to protest the persecution. They say, "We'll kill you through force-feeding!" If the practitioner vomits, they hold the practitioner up and continue to force-feed him. One practitioner was force-fed continuously for over four months until he vomited the water he was force-fed. The guards called him "mentally ill" and sent him to a mental hospital, where he was tortured until he suffered a nervous breakdown, at which point the authorities told his family to take him home.

Due to long-term mental torment, some determined practitioners have developed various symptoms. Practitioner Jiang Hulin often feels dizzy and vomits; practitioner Zhang Shupeng has liver disease; practitioner Qu Yongsheng has severe high blood pressure; and practitioner Li Yongwen has severe liver disease.

In order to control the practitioners' state of mind, the Center requires each practitioner to turn in a report of their thoughts at the end of each month. This report is used along with discussion questions, tests, homework and labor as evaluation criteria that determines whether sentence reduction is possible. The authorities pay closest attention to whether there are words such as "completely breaking away from Falun Gong" and words that attack Teacher and Falun Gong.

Some practitioners followed their captors' orders thoughts because they wanted to go home as soon as possible. Some even helped the perpetrators. The guards often make up questions taken from TV news topics about politics, the economy, science and other things. Then they demand that the practitioners slander Falun Gong by incorporating it into the news topic.

In the summer of 2005, Communist Regime followers from various locations where practitioners are persecuted organized observation teams that visited each other and learned from each other's persecution experiences. Liu Shaoshi and others escalated the psychological abuse of practitioners after the team returned to the Weiningying Forced Labor Camp from a visit. They extended work time, forced the practitioners to study in classrooms during their free time, and also used frequent tests and discussions to achieve their goal. They were unscrupulous. In June 2005, they devised a new policy made up of 16 items. They strictly control the whole group. As a result, practitioners held at the center suffer tremendous physical torture and mental torment at each and every moment.

Ms. Li Jianying From Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province Repeatedly Abused and Tortured Nearly to Death

After the persecution of Falun Gong began in July 1999, Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Li Jianying from North Pingdingbao Town in Guyuan County, Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province, was subjected to severe and never-ending persecution. The abuses heaped upon her under the persecution included beatings, being handcuffed, forced squatting, being forced to cling to a wall with four limbs stretching in different directions, having food withheld, forced injections with drugs that destroy the central nervous system, brainwashing and other atrocities. Whenever she was tortured and was close to death, the police sent her back home to avoid responsibility should she die. Li Jianying was arrested several times. She was at death's door several times and has not yet fully recovered.

Li Jianying previously had glaucoma and was seriously nearsighted. She had neurasthenia gravis, pharyngitis and several other ailments. She was also allergic to many medicines and there was no treatment available. Since she learned Falun Gong in July 1997 and began to practice, all of her illnesses and pain vanished. In the past eight years she hasn't needed a single pill.

She went to Beijing to appeal on July 20, 1999. She was arrested at the Yongdingmen Train Station and sent to Beijing Stadium. Later she was detained in Baoding City and then transferred to Shaheling in Zhangjiakuo City. After being extorted of 100 yuan, agents from the Guyuan County Police Department took her home. She was pressured to write a "guarantee letter" and was illegally detained until midnight. Afterwards, the Guyuan County North Pingdingbao Town Police Station personnel continually harassed her and tried to force her to write a "guarantee letter."

On October 7, 2005, Li Jianying went to Beijing again to appeal for Falun Gong. The Appeals Bureau became the police station. Having no choice, she had to go to Tiananmen Square to appeal. After plainclothes police at Tiananmen Square recognized her, they arrested and took her to the Qianmen Police Station. They questioned her regarding her and other practitioner's names and addresses. Li Jianying refused to say anything. This resulted in her being placed in a police car and crammed into the backseat where too many people to fit in were already sitting. In the backseat, practitioners were crammed one on top of another, but the police didn't care about that at all.

Falun Gong practitioners were taken to the Fangshan Detention Center. The police forced practitioners to tell their addresses and names. If they refused, they were deprived of sleep. The lawless officers handcuffed them and sent them to Zhangjiakou City Liaison Office. After agents from the Guyuan County Police Department took Li Jianying back, they incarcerated her in the County Detention Center. At the detention center Wang Lingfeng slapped Li Jianying on the face. The corner of one of her eyes became black. She lost her vision immediately, which took a while to recover.

The evildoing person forced all practitioners to kneel down and be subjected to a body search.

The police also searched Li Jianying's residence and confiscated Falun Gong books. When they asked Li Jianying's child where the books came from, the child refused to answer. Evildoer Meng Xiangui threatened her, "Take her out and shoot her dead!"

The police interrogated Li Jianying and every day demanded to know the source of the Falun Gong materials. Because she resisted the interrogation, Li Jianying was beaten with fists, and kicked, handcuffed, forced to squat, forced to cling to a wall with all four limbs stretching in opposite directions, and deprived of food and sleep for five to six days. One day a lawless person forced Li Jianying to kneel. Because she didn't cooperate, he twisted her arms backward, grabbed her neck and kicked her legs to make her kneel down. The officer demanded to know why she refused to kneel. She answered, "Except before my Master, I will not kneel before anyone." Seeing that she didn't yield to their demands in the slightest, the police released her. Later, though, Li Jianying was illegally sentenced to three years of forced labor.

During three more months at the detention center, because of her persistence in the practice, Li Jianying was punished by being forced to stand for one day and beaten several times. Over a dozen police officers from the fourth class arrived as a group. Some beat her with their fists, some kicked her and some used electric batons. Detention center head Sun Changhai beat Ms. Li with a shoe sole. He broke and bloodied her nose. He handcuffed Li and forbade her to wear shoes. She was exposed to freezing weather in the courtyard and not allowed to go back to her cell for two hours.

On the seventh day of a hunger strike by Li Jianying and fellow Falun Gong practitioners, the evildoers subjected her to force-feeding and then sent her to the Gaoyang Forced Labor Camp. At Gaoyang Labor Camp, Li Jianying and other practitioners were locked up in a huge freezing room. They were threatened and subjected to freezing temperatures for three days and nights. The next day, Li Jianying's legs were in a spasm that made her shrink into herself. Li Jianying and fellow practitioners were slapped on the face for practicing Falun Gong exercises, but they kept on practicing. The police and more than twenty criminals jumped up and pulled their legs and hands. They also used electric batons to shock them. The beaten practitioners could not get up or walk. Then the police bullied them, and they were not allowed to lay down. Seeing Li Jianying could not move, they transferred her to a room with heat. However, they made a condition that she must report whenever she goes out, and must formally greet the police whenever she encounters them. In the daytime Li Jianying was forced to sit by the bed. She was not allowed to move. She was ordered to look straight ahead and sit straight; otherwise she would be shocked with an electric baton. She was forced to sit with her heels touching and forming a 45 degree angle, with her hands on her knees. She was forced to read the camp's regulations in the morning. She was forced to do heavy manual labor such as digging ditches, carrying corn up stairs even though she had been tortured to the point of having trouble moving her legs. One day, Li Jianying had been carrying corn into a building. The staircase was very narrow and the pain in her legs caused her to have trouble moving. Suddenly she could not move and almost fell down from the sixth floor. Someone happened to walk toward her and pulled her back to prevent the fall.

To escalate the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners, Gaoyang Labor Camp authorities utilized new buildings. Another round of persecution started. The police sent Li Jianying to the "reforming class," completely isolated from the outside. Even the windows were covered with white paper. During the daytime they forced practitioners to sit on a small stool and forbade them from moving. The practitioners were tortured if they did not follow instructions to read printed matter that slandered Falun Gong.

Li Jianying was sent to a big storage room, and her hands were handcuffed to the ground. She was forced to squat around the clock and deprived of sleep. The storage room was windowless. Li Jianying's body was covered with bugs, mosquitoes and other insects. She was handcuffed for four days and nights while being monitored by police. The police used a high voltage electric baton to shock her. The room smelled of burned skin and smoke. Those practitioners who refused to be "reformed" were sent back to the labor camp and otherwise physically punished.

Regardless of the health of the practitioners, they were forced to work. Due to the torture-induced physical weakness caused by digging a big ditch, Li Jianying went into a coma. Even so, after she regained consciousness, she was not allowed to take a rest. Li Jianying was eventually sent to the hospital for an examination. She was injected with drugs that numbed her lower body, and was forcibly treated with other drugs, without effect. They finally ordered her family to take her back home.

After she returned home, Li Jianying didn't give in to the trauma from the evil persecution. She started walking along the bed every day. Sometimes she fell down. Four months later her health had much improved. Li Jianying kept on doing what Falun Gong practitioners should do - handing out Falun Gong truth clarifying materials.

On February 2002, Li Jianying went to Dabeigou Village in Duolun with other Falun Gong practitioners to distribute truth-clarifying materials. The Duolun police arrested the Dabeigou practitioners. They could not tolerate the torture and told their captors the address of Li Jianying's sister. Li Jianying happened to be there. The police asked her, "Are you practicing Falun Gong?" Li Jianying replied, "Yes." The police arrested her. Li Jianying protested the persecution. Suddenly, an individual named Li Jiang from the National Security Team had a very bad headache. So, they took only Li Jianying's sister away and sent her to the Dabeigou Police Station. Later, six to seven police officers forcibly carried Li Jianying to a car and took her to Dabeigou. That afternoon they put her in the Duolun Detention Center.

The next day the police went to Li Jianying sister's home again for interrogations. They forced her brother-in-law (a non-practitioner) to tell the source of the materials. Because he refused to cooperate with the evildoers, they arrested him and took him to the Dabeigou Detention Center where they tortured him with all kind of methods. They put a special kind of handcuff called "wolf-teeth handcuff" on him that cut into his flesh and even the bones were visible. They broke two of his ribs. He suffered inhuman torture.

Li Jianying's sister was pregnant at the time, and the evildoers released her in an attempt to force her go through a forced abortion, and planned to arrest her afterwards. Li Jianying's sister left home to avoid further persecution. The evildoers wanted to extort money from Li Jianying's brother-in-law. The family is poverty-stricken and has no money. The evildoers sentenced Li Jianying's brother-in-law to three years of forced labor. They had a teenage boy at home.

Li Jianying protested the latest illegal arrest with a hunger strike at the Duolun Detention Center. Someone carried her into a car to be taken to a hospital for force-feeding and drugs. It is not known what kind of drug they used, and she went into a coma immediately. Someone carried Li Jianying back to a car and returned her to the detention center. On the third day, agents from the Duolun and Guyuan County Police Department came to Li Jianying's home and started confiscating personal belongings, even their motorcycle. They also tried to arrest their son who didn't practice and was not home at the time. They failed in their arrest attempt.

The police didn't relax their persecution of Li Jianying. During the protest hunger strike, Li Jianying was sent to a hospital for force-feeding. The force-feeding and torture made her choke, experience pain in her gallbladder, legs paralysis and high blood pressure. After over two weeks she was at the brink of death. Finally the police released her.

On September 25, 2005, Jia Mingliang from Guyuan County Police Department suddenly intruded into her home and arrested her again. He took her to the Shisanli Detention Center in Zhangjiakou. After one night there they transferred her to the Gaoyang Labor Camp. During a hunger strike they force-fed her twice a day.

If Falun Gong practitioners did not cooperate, they were beaten with fists and kicked. The criminal inmate who was on hallway duty stepped on Li Jianying's abdomen. Li Jianying was tortured so severely she bled. When the force-feeding failed, the camp doctor stepped on her abdomen. He stabbed an injection needle in her abdomen. This caused symptoms of excruciatingly painful gallstone discomfort. That evening she hurt so badly that she was carried to the therapy room. The doctor at the labor camp said smugly, "She is faking and annoyed us in our sleep." So, he used a steel needle to inject Li Jianying's fingers and toes and other points. He injected Li Jianying at will, until she was at her last breath.

In March 2003, Li Jianying distributed truth clarifying materials at Fengyuandian. Someone reported her to the Fengyuandian Police Station and the police arrested her. Li Jianying didn't cooperate. They pulled on Li Jianying's clothing. Snow and dirt splashed all over her trousers. The police choked Li Jianying's neck, which turned black and blue. Meng Xiangui from County Police Department tried to grab Li Jianying's materials. When he failed he slapped Li Jianying face heavily, severely hurting Li Jianying's head.

After Li Jianying was arrested and sent to the detention center again, an evildoer named Gao slapped Li Jianying on the face and hit her nose. She immediately became dizzy and could not tell directions. Li Jianying went on a 12-day hunger strike. She was not released until she was found to have high-blood pressure, gallstones and paralysis in her legs.

In October 2003, the perpetrators once again arrested Li Jianying and took her to the Shalingzi Brainwashing Class. On the way there, Li Jianying asked Master for strength, that she must return the same day. While in the car her legs hurt, the gallstones hurt, and she could barely walk. The examination at Shalingzi showed that Li Jiangying indeed did not have any control over her body at all. The brainwashing class refused to accept her.

Li Jianying has still not fully recovered.

How the Police and National Security Bureau in Yutian County, Hebei Province Persecute Practitioners

Since July 20, 1999, the 610 Office has ordered Police Chief Liu Wanli, Police Vice-Chief Bian Jiuzhong, National Security Bureau Chief Ma Zhanhua and Ex-Police Chief Cheng Di from the Yutian County Police Station and the National Security Bureau to persecute Falun Gong practitioners. They have illegally arrested the practitioners, ransacked their homes, imposed fines, and sentenced them to forced labor. Besides detaining the practitioners, they have also persecuted them using various means of torture. Below are facts exposing the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners from 2002 to 2003.

    1. Falun Gong practitioner Ms Zhang Shuping is from Hedong Village, Caitingqiao Township. On the afternoon of April 25, 2003, about 10 police officers barged into her home and ransacked it. Although they did not find anything, they still arrested Ms. Zhang and took her to the Caitingqiao Township Police Station. This was the third time she was arrested. After being interrogated and severely tortured with electric batons, she was then transferred to the Yutian County Police Department and the National Security Bureau. There, the persecution continued.

That night, seven to eight police officers pinned Ms. Zhang to the ground while the others took turns using electric batons to shock her head, face, breasts, back, arms, legs, hands and feet. The policemen involved were Liu Wanli, Bian Jiuzhong, Ma Zhanhua, Yang Cheng, Ji Baolong, Chen Yongqiang, Liu Chao, Cheng Di, Wang Zhai, Cheng Zi and others.

At the end of July 2003, the Yutian County Police Station again arrested Ms. Zhang for the fourth time and sent her to the Tangshan City Kaiping No.1 Forced Labor Camp. Ms. Zhang was sentenced to a year and a half of forced labor.

    2. Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Liao Wenhua is from Daijiapu Village, Sanshuitou Township. On May 1, 2003, the Yutian County Police Department and the National Security Bureau ransacked her home without a permit or a warrant. They confiscated three thousand yuan. Police officers Yang Cheng and Ji Baolong also forcibly took Ms. Liao's car and motorcycle before arresting her and taking her to the police station for further interrogation.

At the police station, Officer Chang Zonghui repeatedly slapped and reprimanded her. Another police officer, Bian Jiuzhong, also extorted ten thousand yuan from Ms. Liao's family.

    3. Ms Jia Shufen is from Dawanshu Village, Hongqiao Township. After she was arrested, police officers Yang Cheng and Ji Baolong severely beat and shocked her with electric batons. As a result, her body had bruises everywhere and became swollen to the extent that she could no longer wear any clothes. On July 2, 2003, she was transferred to the Tangshan City Kaiping Forced Labor Camp for a year of forced labor because her family could not afford to pay her fine.

    4. Ms. Bai Qingwen is from Dazhanggezhuang Village. Police officers Yang Cheng and Ji Baolong repeatedly slapped and shocked her with high-voltage electric batons. As a result, she lost consciousness and suffered from amnesia. On July 2, 2003, Ms. Bai was also sentenced to a year of forced labor at the Tangshan City Kaiping Forced Labor Camp because she could not pay the 10,000 yuan fine.

    5. Ms. Ma Yinlian was arrested and tortured by police officers Yang Cheng and Ji Baolong. They brutally beat and shocked her with electric batons before detaining her at the police station in Chengguan Township, Yutian County. The police officers also extorted six thousand yuan from her family.

    6. Ms. Zhang Xiaowen is from the developing area of Yutian County. The Yutian County Police Department Public Security Bureau and the Developing Area Police Station forced her to pay a fine of five thousand yuan just because her husband practices Falun Gong. Ms. Zhang, on many occasions, tried to reason with the public security bureau. They were greatly offended by her doing so. As a result, they charged her with "stirring up trouble" because she practices Falun Gong, and they barred her from the police station. The police later sent many officers to monitor her husband at home, severely disrupting their normal daily life.

On the night of October 28, 2002, police officer Bian Jiuzhong arrested Ms. Zhang's husband at his relatives' home for so-called interrogation. The next day, Ms. Zhang was asked to visit the police station. When she arrived at the station, they tried to force her to slander Falun Gong, but she refused. The police became extremely angry and officers Cheng Di, Li Guangdong and Ji Baolong began to beat her. As a result of the beating, Ms. Zhang repeatedly vomited a lot of blood.

The police became afraid and sent her to the hospital at 4 a.m. because they did not want to be responsible for her death. At the hospital, they lied that she vomited blood because she accidentally bumped her head on a metal pole. The doctor did not believe the police officers and took Ms. Zhang out of the emergency department to ask her about the truth. The doctor was greatly shocked and angry when he heard the truth.

That night, the police deceived Ms. Zhang by telling her that they were taking her to another hospital for further examination. Instead, she was brought back to the police station and detained for three months. During this time, the local 610 Office Chief Jiang Cun, police officers Bian Jiuzhong and Cheng Di, and the Political and Legal Committee Secretary from Ms. Zhang Xiaowen's husband's work unit, Wang Xiuying, often broke into Ms. Zhang's home. They forcibly sent her nine-year-old son to stay at a private school. They also arrested her husband.

On March 20, 2003, the National Security Bureau Chief Ma Zhanhua and Vice-Chief Yang Quanli again barged into Ms. Zhang's home and brought her to the Army Training Camp for a so-called "test." They forced her to answer questions. Police officers Jiang Chun, Bian Jiuzhong, Yang Cheng and Ji Baolong took this opportunity to detain Ms. Zhang at the police station. They also demanded that she pay a fine of ten thousand yuan. However, Ms. Zhang did not have any money and could not pay the fine.

On April 30, 2003, at about 9.30 p.m., Liu Yutian from the County Police Department National Security Bureau, and Liao Shukun, the head of the Public Security Bureau handcuffed Ms. Zhang and brought her back to the National Security Bureau.

Immediately after Ms. Zhang arrived at the bureau, police officers Yang Quanli, Yang Cheng, Ji Baolong and Ma Yinsheng pinned her to the ground and stepped on her. Then, they shocked her with electric batons for more than an hour. After they stopped shocking her, the police tried to force Ms. Zhang to write a report, but she refused. As a result, she was shocked again. Ms. Zhang's body was bruised everywhere and her mouth was full of blood. However, they continued to shock her by handcuffing her limbs and hanging her up on a wooden pole that was one meter long and forty centimeters thick. The police officers repeatedly told Ms. Zhang that, unless the wooden pole broke, they would use the way pigs were killed to torture her.

However, after the wooden pole broke, police officer Ji Baolong refused to stop. He picked up the broken pole and continued to brutally beat Ms. Zhang. After the beating, she was then forced to sit on a chair with her hands cuffed and her arms tied with a rope to the chair. Then, Ji Baolong squeezed a ball of cloth into her mouth before he and another officer proceeded to shock her with electric batons. They shocked Ms. Zhang's breasts, lower body and head with a 20,000-volt electric baton that had to be plugged into an outlet in order to constantly deliver the high voltage.

The cruel police officers then forced Ms. Zhang to place her thumbprint on a false confession statement against her will. Officer Zhang Qi threatened Ms. Zhang, "If you dare to say that our ways of interrogations are illegal, we will definitely give you some 'good treatment.'"

Ms. Zhang was tortured this way until 6 a.m. the next day before she was brought back to the police station. She was continuously tortured for nearly twenty hours. Her whole body was swollen and covered with bruises. Some of her teeth were also knocked out in the process of being tortured.

Even after she was released, the police constantly broke into her home to extort money from her. They also confiscated a motorcycle from Ms. Zhang and had her sentenced to one and a half year of forced labor.

Other Falun Gong practitioners who have been brutally persecuted by the Yutian County Police Department and the National Security Bureau include Li Xinhua, Chen Yubin, Liu Xiuying, Yang Yuezhan, Liu Jingguo, and Han Fuyuan.

Details of the Second Illegal Court Trial of Falun Gong Practitioner Ms. Ye Mi from Xiamen City

Falun Gong practitioner Ye Mi from Xiamen City was arrested on December 27, 2004 during a citywide mass arrest of Falun Gong practitioners. So far, she has been illegally detained for more than one year.

On June 9, 2005 during the first illegal court trial, the authorities leveled false charges against Ye Mi. But because of support from those in the audience, the first court session ended in a mistrial. Following the trial, more than twenty of Ms. Ye's colleagues from Xiamen University wrote a joint letter to the CCP regime. They stated that Ye Mi is an excellent lecturer and artist with a good reputation both in terms of ability and professional ethics. At the same time, they pointed out that she is a good person with high moral standards. They stated that after sitting in the audience, they were convinced that Ye Mi did not commit any crime and requested her release.

The Xiamen authorities ignored the pleas and continued to detain Ye Mi, and reopened a trial on November 25, 2005.

Ye Mi said in response to the court's accusations, "I did not commit any crime! The law allows citizens to have freedom of belief. I practice Falun Gong so as to have good health, achieve a higher moral standard and learn to be a really good person. I do not participate in politics and I do not oppose anyone. As a university lecturer, I work hard at my job and try my best to serve society. This is also doing my part for the country. But ever since the CCP started to persecute Falun Gong, my family and I have been living in fear for extended periods of time. We were tailed and our phones were tapped. Letters were intercepted, and I have been sent to forced labor camp. My family members were persecuted for long periods of time and felt that there was not a single safe place for them. We even have to speak softly in our own home and be careful of what we say, in case you label the words we use as 'reactionary.' We are afraid that the eavesdropping devices will catch such terms and thus cause us trouble. Your actions have violated the law and ethical behavior. I object vehemently!"

The court then presented photocopies of 61 letters supposedly written by Ye Mi as "evidence" against her.

A lawyer said, "The law states that photocopies cannot be used an evidence for conviction. The 61 letters that the court is presenting, similar to the handwriting analysis presented during the first trial, were all photocopies and thus cannot be used as evidence for conviction."

Thereafter, the court announced a recess, and Ye Mi was escorted back to the detention center.

The court audience was discussing, "How could we still see such a ridiculous court session? Who knows where they managed to get the 61 letters. Ye Mi has been detained for over a year and there have been two trials. Each time there is a court session, and once the concrete issues are discussed, the court will announce a recess. Then they will retreat, but they will not release her. A year is not a short period of time. Ye Mi must have suffered much! Her family members must be worried and heartbroken! How can they detain her for so long? It's both cruel and illegal!"

"We know Ye Mi very well. She is an extraordinarily good and kind person. At the same time she is an outstanding lecturer and artist. Seeing her being illegally detained and on the defendant's stand, I felt terrible. She did not commit any crime! She has been detained for so long. Who knows when she will be released?"

Many people expressed admiration for Ye Mi's upright spirit and demeanor.

Two Unusual Incidents Produced by the Specter of the Chinese Communist Party

    "Unqualified" To Be a Soldier

In a remote district of Chenzhou City in Hunan Province, there was a young fellow who reached eighteen years old and wanted to join the army to serve the county. At his first physical exam, he easily passed all the tests because he had a very good body and was 6-feet tall. However, during the final exam, which was a political exam involving an investigation of the political background of his family members, he failed, and was considered to be "unqualified" for military service.

The reason for his failure was that his aunt practices Falun Gong. Later, his family members repeatedly tried to find someone to help him, but nobody dared to inquire into his case. They all said, "The policies from the top leaders stipulate that the family members or relatives of Falun Gong practitioners are not allowed to join the army." Just like that, the young fellow lost his chance to become a soldier.

After this incident, many people commented, "The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is so evil. In order to persecute Falun Gong, it even uses such a method of implicating one's distant relatives."

If You Do Not Go to Work, Then You Go to Prison

In a county in Hunan Province, there is a young man named Xiao Yun (assumed name), who is kind; honest and always ready to help others. His colleagues and neighbors all consider him a very nice person. Because he practices Falun Gong and believes in Truth-Compassion-Forbearance, he was illegally sentenced to one year of forced labor. Several days after he was released from the forced labor camp, some 610 Office personnel demanded that he return to his work unit immediately so that they could more easily monitor him and continue persecuting him.

When Xiao Yun made a request to take a vacation before returning to work, an official from the 610 Office threatened him by saying, "Either you go back to work, or we will arrest you and put you back into prison again."

Is it a crime for someone to take a vacation before returning to work? From this we can see that in persecuting Falun Gong over the past six years, the Jiang hoodlum regime controlled by the CCP's evil specter, has never followed any laws but has done whatever it wanted.

Six Falun Gong Practitioners from Liaoning, Hebei, Anhui and Gansu Provinces Passed Away from the Persecution

Ms. Xiang Fuping, 49, was a Falun Gong practitioner from Dingjiafang Village, Guanshan Town, Fengcheng City, Liaoning Province. She started to practice Falun Gong with her husband Zhu Zhongguo in 2002. He was sentenced to 5 years in prison. Mr. Zhu is currently detained in the Dabei Prison of Shenyang City. Since her husband's incarceration, Xiang Fuping's family lost the warmth they had previously. Not only did Xiang Fuping have to raise her two daughters by herself, she had to take on heavy work in the village. She also suffered frequent harassment from the police. Xiang Fuping suffered both mentally and physically from the persecution and she became thinner every day. Finally on December 4, 2005, Ms. Xiang showed symptoms of heart failure and passed away. When the persecution started on July 20, 1999, Mr. Sun appealed to the Communist Committee of the city and province and was illegally arrested. Later, lawless officials from his local police station, neighborhood, and community harassed him at his home many times. Mr. Sun passed away in March 2003, as a result of the ongoing pressure and harassment.

Ms. Kong Genxiu, 50, was a Falun Gong practitioner from Hebei Province. In 2002, she was detained by Communist Party officials and put into a brainwashing class. There, she was subjected to brainwashing and forced to write the three statements to renounce Falun Gong. Later, police from the 610 Office often harassed her at her home. In extreme terror, Ms. Kong was extorted out of 5,000 yuan. In 2004, Kong Genxiu developed a high fever and passed away.

Ms. Yu Jingfang, 54, was a Falun Gong practitioner in Shou County of Shandong Province. She started to practice Falun Gong in 1997. She gained very good health, and her family became very harmonious as well. In 2000, Ms. Yu traveled to Beijing to clarify the truth of Falun Gong and was illegally detained. After she was released, officials from her local police station, neighborhood, and her work unit monitored her continuously and harassed her. Because of financial persecution, Yu Jingfang was forced to leave her home. On December 11, 2005, Ms. Yu passed away.

Ms. Xu Youlian, 69, was a Falun Gong practitioner in Yuzhong County, Gansu Province. She started to practice Falun Gong in 1995. Both her body and mind were severely damaged from this persecution. She passed away in November 2003.

Mr. Ding Yinxue, 77, was Ms. Xu Youlian's husband and also a Falun Gong practitioner. Before he started to practice Falun Gong, he had several severe diseases. Not long after he started to practice Falun Gong in 1995, all his diseases were cured. After July 20, 1999, under constant threats from the neighborhood committee and police station, his body and mind were severely damaged. Ding Yinxue passed away in May 2005.
