The Facts of the Persecution of Falun Gong -- December 14, 2005

My name is Wang Zhen and I am from Shanghai. In October 2004 I came to Dresden, Germany, to study at a university.

In July 1997, I started to practice Falun Gong while I was studying at the Department of Structural Engineering at Tongji University in Shanghai. We did the exercises on campus as a group and we studied the Fa, mostly Zhuan Falun, in the faculty lounge.

After the persecution began in July 1999, I refused to give up Falun Gong and was held at Luwan District Detention Center between September 28 and November 20, 2001. Between November 20, 2001, and March 18, 2002, I was held at Group 1, Division 2 in the Shanghai No.1 Forced Labor Camp, located in Dafeng, Jiangsu Province. Between March 18, 2002 and September 27, 2003, I was held at Group 4, Division 5 of the No.3 Forced Labor Camp in Qingpu, Shanghai. The group head's last name was Hong.

I was forced to do hard labor at these camps, such as carrying baskets of animal manure, cutting grass, sewing stuffed toys such as bears and monkeys, and making beaded purses, Christmas gifts and electric connectors, among other things. Many of these products were exported. I worked from 7:30 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. daily without any salary. In addition, Falun Gong practitioners were treated worse than the common inmates. We were subjected to brainwashing as well as physical torture. The guards forced us to watch slanderous videos and demanded that we write our "understandings" afterwards. They also forced us to read books on the Communist Party's theories.

Because I refused to give up Falun Gong, the labor camp authorities ordered inmates to torture me on April 25,2003. One inmate grasped my hand so that all my fingers were close together. Then he inserted a toothbrush handle between my fingers and stabbed them, which caused great pain. During the torture they kept saying to me, "You have mental problems; you have a screw loose in your head; you are walking down an evil path." They also forced me to sit with my back against a wall while two inmates spread my arms apart and another inmate sat facing me and spread my legs apart until the ligaments tore in both of my legs. I cannot walk normally to this day and cannot bend or stretch my legs. I cannot engage in physically demanding activities.

They also pinned me to the ground and stomped and kicked me, which caused severe back injuries. They burned my fingers with cigarettes and cursed Falun Gong. In order to prevent me from saying "Falun Dafa is good" they monitored me closely throughout the detention period.

Several months later Falun Gong practitioner Lu Xingguo was tortured to death. The labor camp authorities claimed that he died from suicide. To damage Falun Gong's reputation, the newspapers claimed that Falun Gong practitioners who died in labor camps had committed suicide.

Before he was tortured to death in December 2003, I saw practitioner Ma Xinxing at the labor camp. He was skin and bones and had little response to the outside. He didn't dare to talk to us. I know at least two Falun Gong practitioners who were tortured to death and many others who are still being illegally detained.

I was released on September 27, 2003. During the detention I wrote a guarantee statement against my better judgment, because I could no longer endure the constant physical torture and mental torment. In August 2005 I published an article on the Minghui (Chinese version of Clearwisdom) website and reported some of the tortures used on me and on some other practitioners.

On February 9, 2004, I found a job at the Siemens High Pressure Switch Company in Shanghai. They fired me on March 16 after learning that I was still practicing Falun Gong.

My grandparents have been living in fear during the past two years. Their neighbors call them "counterrevolutionaries." Both had suffered mild strokes and were hospitalized.. My mother was illegally sentenced to two years of forced labor for practicing Falun Gong. The persecution has wreaked havoc on my whole family.

I used to have many friends, but they stopped talking to me after they learned that I was still practicing Falun Gong. They did not want to risk persecution for associating with me. This year I learned that another three practitioner friends have been arrested. They are Fa Zhengping, Lu Jinlong and Lin Mingli. Lin Mingli was arrested for the second time. I lost my job, my friends and my freedom to this persecution.

Despite the tribulations, I will continue to practice Falun Gong. I will continue to follow Truth-Compassion-Tolerance. I will never give up.

Falun Gong practitioner Mrs. Meng Guiqiu was illegally arrested by the local police in April 2004 and sentenced to three years in a labor camp. She's been on a hunger strike for more than 200 days in protest of the persecution. The authorities denied her right to family visits. Her family is deeply concerned about her current condition.

Mrs. Meng Guiqiu, 51 years old, is from Goubangzi, Nongjiyuan. She is known as a kind, generous and open-minded person. For a long time she has suffered persecution because she practices Falun Gong.

On April 16, 2000, several practitioners from Goubangzi County went to Beijing to appeal on behalf of Falun Gong. Mrs. Meng Guiqiu didn't go at that time, but the local government officials still extorted 2,000 yuan from her, claiming that they were going to set up a brainwashing center. On December 20, 2000, she set out for Beijing, but the local police caught her and sent her to a detention center. The police only released her after her family paid 5,000 yuan.

On April 2, 2004 the Public Security Bureau in Beijing, working with the Goubangzi Police Division, dispatched a large detail of officers, who surrounded Mrs. Meng Guiqiu's home, kept it under surveillance for three days, and then raided the home, arresting her and her husband.

The police later released her husband but held her in the detention center. Mrs. Meng Guiqiu initiated a hunger strike in defiance of the unjustifiable persecution. The police instigated the other inmates to savagely force-feed her, and they knocked out two of her front teeth. After 20 days on the hunger strike, she was sentenced to three years in a forced labor camp.

At the Masanjia Forced Labor Camp she has suffered brutal persecution, including brainwashing, group attacks and torture. The officials in the labor camp have been arrogant and unreasonable, and they have used all sorts of excuses to deny her family visiting rights. Warden Su Jing handcuffed her because she refused to wear the inmate's uniform and let the other officers grab her by the hair and hit her head against the bed. Su Jing told her threateningly, "I'm going to fix you."

After one torture session, she had a seizure, and someone suggested they send her to the hospital, but officer Xie Chengdong, male, age 50, refused to do it. She was finally sent to the hospital when her condition became critical.

Officials at the labor camp have denied Mrs. Meng family visits since April 28, 2005. They have told her family that she is still on a hunger strike. It's been more than 200 days, and her family is in agony over her situation.

Practitioner Li Biaojie from Panjin died of force-feeding. Mrs. Meng has already lost two of her front teeth. What we've written about her condition is only the tip of the iceberg. Officials at the labor camp have sealed her records, so nobody knows how much she's been suffering there.

According to recent reports, practitioner Ms. Zhang Ying is on the verge of death because she is refusing to accept any food or water to resist the brutal persecution of forced labor. This was Ms. Zhang Ying's third arrest. Before this she was sent to a forced labor camp for two and a half years for producing Falun Gong materials. Six months after being released she was arrested again and was forced to undergo brainwashing.

What Ms. Zhang Ying encountered and experienced is only one typical example of what countless practitioners are facing every day. Since Chinese New Year's Day, 2005, in Shanghai alone, more than 90 practitioners have been arrested, detained, sentenced to forced labor camps and brainwashing centers, and tortured to death. I have listed below the names of the practitioners who were arrested and persecuted based on the reports published on the Internet and what I have learned myself. The list is arranged in chronological order.

On January 6, five practitioners were arrested in the Xuhui District of Shanghai while passing out truth-clarification materials in front of a supermarket. Ms. Hu Yuefang was released due to her poor health. Four other practitioners were all sent to forced labor camps. Among them Ms. Ren Lingdi and Ms. Rong Huijun were sentenced to 15 months of forced labor, and Ms. Xu Jinbao and Lu Peizhen were sentenced to one year of forced labor.

On January 8, practitioner Mr. Wu Aizhong was arrested by Xujing, Qingpu District police on his way to work. His wife, Ms. Zhang Hui, and their six-year-old son were arrested on the same day. Practitioner Ms. Liu Lan and the couple Mr. Lu Quanzeng and Mrs. Li Yuyan, both over 70, were also arrested on the same day. After being illegally detained for more than six months, Mr. Wu Aizhong and Ms. Liu Lan were sentenced to seven and a half years in prison, Ms. Zhang Hui to four years, and the couple Mr. Lu Quanzeng and Mrs. Li Yuyan, three and a half years.

Practitioner Ms. Li Linlin was arrested on January 8, 2005, for clarifying the truth. She was held in the Changning District Detention Center. There has been no news of her since. On January 27, practitioner Ms. Yan Qiuying and her daughter were arrested for posting truth-clarification materials, and their whereabouts are still unknown.

Practitioner Ms. Cong Beixi, 57, from the Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was arrested on November 26, 2004, in the Yangpu District. The 610 Office and its accomplices ransacked her house. She was sent to a forced labor camp for a year. The day before last Chinese New Year's eve, Ms. Wang Quandi, over 50, from the New Residential Area in Pudong was arrested. Later, she escaped from the detention with the help of her righteous thoughts. Ms. Yao Guizhen and her teenage son were also arrested. Ms. Yao was sentenced to two years of imprisonment and her son, though still underage, was not spared. He was detained for more than one month and then sent to Qingpu Brainwashing Center for persecution.

In February, practitioner Shi Jun from Pudong was arrested by the police from the Shanggang Police Station in Shanghai and Shi's whereabouts is still unknown.

On March 2, practitioner Ms. Pei Shanzhen, 61, from the Jing'an District was arrested for mailing truth-clarification materials. On September 23, she was sentenced to four years in prison. On March 24, Ms. Xing Maoxiu, 64, was arrested by the police officers from the Yanji Police Sub-Station of the Yangpu District and the Nanhui Police Sub-Station in Pudong. Details are not immediately known. On March 25, practitioner Mr. Li Xuejin was arrested by the police from the Hongqiao Police Sub-Station in the Minhang District. In the evening his house was ransacked and his whereabouts is still not known. On the same day practitioner Ms. Wu Rong was missing and her whereabouts is also known.

Also in March three other practitioners were persecuted. Practitioner Ms. Rao Meiling was arrested for distributing truth-clarification pamphlets. After being detained for one month, she was transferred to the Qingpu Brainwashing Center. Practitioners Ms. Li and Ms. Wu from the Changning District were arrested after they were reported for clarifying the truth in a taxi. Their whereabouts are unknown.

On April 5, three police cars surrounded the entrance of practitioner Mr. Liu Weixin's house in the Minhang District. There is suspicion that the police arrested him, however, that was not confirmed. On April 6, practitioners Ms. Zhu Wenxian, Ms. Sun Wenjuan, Ms. Tao Tanying, Aunt Chen, Aunt Yang, Ms. Ge Meiyu, Ms. Ling Meijuan, Fa Zhengping and Qian Jianying from the Weifang area in Pudong were arrested. Aunt Chen and Aunt Yang were released on April 7. The other seven practitioners were detained. Among them, physics teacher Fang Zhengping might have been sentenced to prison. Ms. Qian Jianying, Ms. Ling Meijuan and Ms. Ge Meiyu were sentenced to one year of forced labor. Ms. Zhu Wenxian, Ms. Sun Wenjuan and Ms. Tao Tanying were sent to the brainwashing center for persecution.

On April 11, four practitioners were sentenced in the Hongkou District Court for clarifying the truth. Ms. Zhou Shumei was sentenced to a six-year prison term, Ms. Liu Fendi to seven years, Ms. Hua Liping to three years, and Ms. Wu Peiyu to three years plus three years probation. On April 14, practitioner Ms. Gong Naifang, over 50, was arrested by the police from the Fengxian Police Department, Shanghai, and her home was ransacked. It was reported that she was later released.

On April 28, practitioner Ms. Li Caifeng, over 60, was arrested in Gaoqiao Township in the Pudong New Residential Area while clarifying the truth of Falun Gong, and was later released. On October 2, when she was passing out truth-clarification CDs during her trip to Zhejiang Province, she was followed and videotaped. As a result, she and another practitioner were forced to become homeless in order to avoid being arrested. There has been no news of them since.

Practitioners arrested in April also included Mr. Xie Yinlong. There is still no news about him.

On May 19, practitioner Ms. Tang Renya was arrested and her whereabouts is still unknown. On May 24, practitioner Ms. Guan Longmei, 54, from the Hongkou District was being followed and there is no news about her ever since. Also, practitioner Ms. Cui Baokun, over 60, was arrested by the police from the Baoshan District for passing out truth-clarification materials last year. She was sentenced to three years in prison in May of this year.

On June 14, practitioner Ms. Gu Jihong from the Putuo District was arrested after being reported while distributing truth-clarification materials. She was held in the Putuo District Detention Center. There is no current news on her situation. On June 6, practitioners from Shanghai Ms. Bai Gendi and Ms. Yao Yuhua were arrested by the police from the Xuhui District Police Department. Ms. Bai Gendi managed to walk out of the detention with the help of righteous thoughts, however, there was no news about Ms. Yao Yuhua. Around June 20, practitioner Mr. Wu Bingqing was arrested by the police officers from the Yangpu District Police Department and now Mr. Wu is being held in the Yangpu District Detention Center, which is located on Changyang Road. On June 22, practitioner Wang Yiyi, Law and Discipline Manager of the Silicon Department of General Electric Company (China), was sentenced to a three-year prison term for distributing truth-clarification materials.

On July 5, practitioner Mr. Lu Jinlong was arrested by the Baoshan District police and may be held in their detention center, but no details are available at the moment. On July 10, practitioner Mr. Chen Penghui was arrested at home, which was later ransacked. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison. On July 11, practitioner Ms. Li Shuqin, a retired teacher from the Shanghai No. 2 Medical University, was arrested at home on Sinan Road in the Luwan District, and her whereabouts is still unknown. A young couple from Yichuan No. 6 Residential Area was also arrested on the same day. Among them, Wang Yu is being detained, and there is no current news about the practitioner. Practitioner Wang Aiwu was released shortly after been arrested. Practitioner Pan Jijun from Dongfang Hospital was arrested by the police from the Pudong New Residential Area Police Sub-Department on the same day. It is learned that the authorities planned to put the practitioner on "trial."

On July 25, practitioner Kang Hanxin from the Xuhui District was arrested when practicing the exercises on the Nanjing Road. Kang is held in the Huangpu Detention Center and no details are immediately available.

On August 4, practitioner Mr. Gengzhaojun from the Xuhui District was arrested by the police from the Xuhui Police Department and the Longhua Police Station. Shortly after his arrest he was sent to a forced labor camp for one year. On the same day practitioner Mr. Zhang Tianlun from the Huangpu District was talked into leaving home on the pretense of having a conversation, and he was taken to the Qingpu Brainwashing Center for brainwashing. On the same day, practitioner Mr. Tang Yongge was arrested while clarifying the facts of Falun Gong in a small park in the Huajing Area. No details about him are immediately available.

On August 11, practitioner Mr. Lu Weidong was sentenced to three years in prison by the the Baoshan District Court. He was arrested last year when clarifying the facts on Falun Gong. Practitioner Ms. Fan Wanxia from Husong was arrested when distributing flyers in front of the Lianhua Shopping Center. She is being held in the Baoshan Detention Center. On August 25, practitioner Ms. Zhao Qiaoying from the Pudong New Residential Area was arrested in the parking lot of the Yichu Lianhua Shopping Center. She was recently sentenced to one year of forced labor.

On September 5, practitioner Ms. Ju Linhui was arrested when passing out truth-clarification materials in Qibao in the Minhang District. The Qibao Police Sub-Station took her to the Minhang Detention Center. Her whereabouts is unknown. On September 8, practitioner Ms. Lu Xiuli, 56, was reported and arrested in a vegetable market for clarifying the facts about Falun Gong. Her situation is unclear. On September 13, the police officers from the Changning District and members of the 610 Office arrested 60-year-old practitioner Ms. Xu Hanming in her home. She was held in the Changning District Detention Center. No other details are available.

On September 25, practitioner Mr. Chen Jie and his wife, Ms. Zhou Ling, were reported and arrested in the Bingjiang Garden on Luoshan Road, Pudong New Residential Area, while distributing truth-clarification VCDs. They were taken to the local Luoshan Police Sub-Station and then transferred to the Pudong New Residential Area Detention Center located in Zhangjiang. The couple is being illegally detained.

Practitioners arrested in September also include Ms. Shi Limin, Ms. Fan Yunxia and Wu Bingqing from the Pudong New Residential Area. They were arrested after they were videotaped while passing out truth-clarification materials inside the Hualian Shopping Center by the surveillance camera. No details about the three practitioners are available. Practitioner Ms. Zhang Ying mentioned above was also arrested in September.

On October 9, practitioners Lin Mingli, Li Hua, and Ms. Cao Qiong were arrested by the police from the Putao District and the 610 Office. It is learned that they were arrested for producing truth-clarification materials. They are being held in the Putao District Detention Center. On October 19, practitioner Li Jinyu, 58, was reported and arrested while clarifying the truth. On September 14, Li Jinyu was sentenced to one year of forced labor.

On October 21, practitioner Ms. Zheng Chunfang was arrested by members of the Changning District 610 Office. There has been no further news about her. On October 28, practitioner Ms. Chen Yao was missing. It has been learned that she was taken to a brainwashing center, but no details are available.

On November 8, practitioner Zhang Qin was arrested again by the Minhang Police Sup-Department and is being held in the Minhang Detention Center in Shanghai. No family visits are allowed and no details were given.

This year there were reports on the Internet about practitioners Ms. Zhang Shuying and Ms. Dong Jian from the Yangpu District, Liu Jun from the Jing'an District, and Wu Qiurong from the Minhang District. Practitioner Ms. Zhang Shuying was arrested in August of last year when clarifying the facts in the Changning District. It has been learned that she was sentenced to 18 months in prison. Family members are not allowed to visit her. Ms. Dong Jian, over 60 years old, is a retired section leader in the Shanghai Municipal Archives Bureau. She lived at the dormitory of the Air-force Political Academy on Huangxing Road in the Yangpu District. She was sentenced by the Yangpu District Court to a three-year prison term in June, 2004, on fabricated charges. She is being held in the Songjiang Women's Prison. Practitioner Mr. Liu Jun was arrested and sentenced to one year of forced labor in August of last year in the Jing'an District. Wu Qiurong was sentenced to three years of forced labor for clarifying the truth.

Practitioner Chen Boying, 43, from the Minhang District, was arrested in April of last year but the practitioner's whereabouts is still unknown. Practitioner Ms. Chen Jingfang, about 34 years old, lived in the Jiading District in Shanghai. She was arrested again in November and there is no news about her. Ms. Tan Shaoshu, over 60, encountered similar misfortune. She was a retired worker from a pharmaceutical factory in Shanghai. She was arrested last year when clarifying the truth and is being illegally detained.

Five practitioners died in February, May, and June of this year as a result of inhuman torture. They were Ms. Chao Qiangzhen from the Yangpu District, Ms. Li Limao from the Luwan District, Ms. Cao Jinshan from the Pudong District, and Xu Meijing and Ge Wenxin from the Xuhui District.

According to the names listed above, it has been confirmed that 15 practitioners were sent to forced labor camps, seven to brainwashing centers, and 36 are still in custody, but their conditions are unknown. Seven practitioners were detained and either released or managed to leave the detention with the help of righteous thoughts. Five practitioners were tortured to death. Among these practitioners many of them have been arrested, detained, sent to forced labor camps, sentenced to prisons or sent to brainwashing centers many times. Many of them are also over 50 years old. On the afternoon of June 13, police officers from Chuanqiao Township in the Minhang District fanatically arrested practitioners, but the actual number of arrests is still unknown due to lack of information.

The names listed here are only a small portion of the practitioners who have been persecuted. Many of the persecution cases are unknown to outsiders due to the news blockade or lack of information resources for the practitioners. In reality, the number of persecuted practitioners would exceed 100. You can imagine the severity of the persecution in Shanghai.

Zhao Fenglian, a Falun Gong practitioner from Wuwei City, Gansu Province, is emaciated and on the verge of death as a result of torture in Lanzhou Women's Jail.

Ms. Zhao Fenglian, 54, lives in apartment 1, Building 32, No. 6 Residence Area, of Wuwei City, Gansu Province. She started to practice Falun Gong in 1996. In 2001, she was sentenced to one year of forced labor because she was caught delivering truth clarification materials. In October 2003, because she distributed truth clarification materials along with Ms. Li Tianxiang, she was arrested again by Jinchuan Police Substation and Jinchang City Police Department, and secretly sentenced to 4 years in prison by Jinchuan District Procuratorate.

From September 2005, when Ms. Zhao was illegally detained in Lanzhou Women's Jail, her health quickly deteriorated and she suffered from gastritis. As a result, she was unable to eat anything and became emaciated. On September 19, she was transferred from No. 2 prison area to the surveillance team for brainwashing. There she was ordered to write three statements, get shots, and take medicine. After the so-called "treatment," Ms. Zhao's health became worse and worse, and soon she was only skin and bones.

Yang Qingru, a former practitioner who had accepted the brainwashing and now helped the Chinese authorities to try to brainwash other practitioners, worked on Ms. Zhao Fenglian for three consecutive days. Besides this, Yang Qingru forced all newcomers to recite the jail regulations and tried to brainwash them. If she found anyone doing the Falun Gong exercises, she reported it to the jail guards. She also forced the Falun Gong practitioners to write the "four letters," and a "brainwashing report" every week.

Although Ms. Zhao was in such a fragile health state, she was still forced to watch television shows slandering Falun Gong. When she was too weak to handle it, the jail staff forced her to sit in the lobby and forbade her from having a break. Later she was taken to the hospital for treatment.

1. [Jinzhou City, Liaoning Province] Falun Gong Practitioner Mr. Miao Jianguo Held in the City Forced Labor Camp Again

Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Miao Jianguo was sent to the Guta Hospital after nine days of hunger striking at the Jinzhou City Forced Labor Camp. During the afternoon of December 1, 2005, wardens found that Miao Jianguo was unconscious and then called his family and told them to take him home. The next afternoon, however, five wardens including Bai Jinlong from the forced labor camp arrested him and took him back to the labor camp.

2. [Yinan County, Shandong Province] Du Yifeng Held with Extended Detention Term in the Shandong Province Women's Forced Labor Camp

On October 29, 2003, Yinan County 610 Office personnel sent Yinan County Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Du Yifeng to the Shandong Province No.1 Women's Forced Labor Camp for a two-year term.

Du Yifeng was tortured many times in the camp. In June 2004, because Ms. Du refused to write her so-called "personal thoughts report" she was deprived of sleep. At 12:00 a.m. after Du Yifeng just got into bed, Sun Qunli, a warden, brutally dragged her to ground from the upper tier of a bunk bed. Then Du Yifeng was dragged into a bathroom and locked onto a heating pipe for six days. The warden did not release her even when she needed to use the toilet. Wardens threatened that if she refused to write a repentance statement she would not be released from the heating pipe. Having suffered from this torture, Du Yifeng could not wear her shoes due to her extremely swollen feet. She had difficulty walking for a long time.

In September 2004, police attempted to "reform" her again. As she refused, police hung her up by her handcuffs and only let her toes touch the ground. They threatened that if she would not be "reformed," the torture would not end. Thus, Du Yifeng's arms hurt for over half a year.

At present, Du Yifeng has been held about two years and one month in the forced labor camp. The two-year term has expired, but the authorities still refuse to release her.

3. [Yangchun City, Guangdong Province] Mo Yimei Sentenced to Two Years of Forced Labor

At the end of May 2005, practitioner Ms. Mo Yimei was put into a brainwashing class. Because she did not give in, she was sentenced to two years of forced labor. Currently, Mo Yimei is being held at the Sanshui Women's Forced Labor Camp.

4. [Qingdao City, Shandong Province] Sun Jiefen Arrested for Clarifying the Truth at a Market

In the middle of November 2005, practitioner Ms. Sun Jiefen, 60 years old, from Zhao Village, Liuting Community, Chengyang District, Qingdao City was arrested when clarifying the truth in a bazaar in Lijianugu Village. She is presently being held at the Dashan City Detention Center.

5. [Tianjin] Zhang Fengcai Arrested for Distributing Truth-Clarifying Materials

On October 24, 2005, personnel working at the Yueyahe Street Community in Hebei District, Tianjin City spotted 55-year-old practitioner Ms. Zhang Fengcai distributing truth-clarifying materials. She is a retired employee of the Tianbei Food Industry Company. Police later arrested her and confiscated over five hundreds copies of truth-clarifying materials and 350 CDs from her home.

6. [Shenze County, Hebei Province] Jia Rongjuan and Liu Wuying Detained for Clarifying the Truth

On December 1, 2005, practitioner Ms. Jia Rongjuan from Xiaopu Village, Baizhuang Township, and practitioner Ms. Liu Wuying from Lu Village, Zhaoba Township, in Shenze County, Hebei Province went to clarify the truth to people in the Political Security Section of Shenze County Police Department. The practitioners also petitioned for the return of the large amounts of money that had been extorted from them and the "fines" they were required to pay.
