  • Practitioner Lei Ming Who Intercepted TV Signals Disabled from Torture

Practitioner Mr. Lei Ming, 30, is from Baishan City, Jilin Province. To help explain the truth to the many people in China that have been deceived by the Chinese government's slanderous propaganda against Falun Gong, Mr. Lei helped other practitioners to broadcast Falun Gong truth-clarification programs on TV in Changchun City, Jilin Province, on March 5, 2002. At that time Jiang's regime had issued a secret order to "kill without mercy" Falun Gong practitioners caught posting truth clarification materials, and Mr. Lei was illegally arrested under this order. Consequently, Lei Ming suffered cruel persecution and inhumane torture in the hands of the police. The Changchun City Intermediate Court sentenced Mr. Lei Ming to 17 years in prison and sent him to Jilin Prison, where he was tortured further. Lei Ming was jailed for more than two years until he became critically ill. After posting bail, he was released for medical treatment in 2004, but he is now disabled from the torture. His muscles are atrophying, he can't walk and he can no longer take care of himself.

During the two years and one month he spent in Jilin Prison, Lei Ming witnessed practitioners suffering under the persecution. For example, Zhang Hongwei was tied up in a fixed position for 60 days in the Strict Discipline Team, and then spent two years in a strict discipline cell. Diao Shujun and Wang Fengcai were tied up in fixed positions in small cells for six weeks respectively. The prisoners who monitored them scalded their stomachs with boiling water. Liu Zhaojian began a hunger strike to protest when the prison started broadcasting slanderous information about Falun Gong. Therefore, he was taken to the Strict Discipline Team for force-feeding with salt water, which caused him great thirst. Liu Zhaojian was tied up in a fixed position for 15 days and forced to sit for 11 months in the Strict Discipline Team.

Suffering Torture at the Changchun City Police Department

On March 15, 2002, police and others from Qingming Police Station of Changchun City arrested Lei Ming for intercepting TV signals. The police searched him and confiscated 200 yuan from him. They cuffed his hands behind his back and forced him to sit on the floor. Within less than an hour, a group of police officers from the Changchun City Police Department arrived. A few officers picked Lei Ming up and carried him outside. Lei Ming saw from the door many people gathered around outside. Some held microphones and video cameras. As soon as Lei Ming came through the door, they surrounded him, attempting to stage an interview. Mr. Lei refused to be interviewed by the police.

The police took Lei Ming to the Changchun City Police Department. He was taken to a room on the sixth floor and tied to a tiger bench. This tiger bench is made out of iron and is taller than a normal chair, so the person must be physically lifted onto the chair. After sitting on it, the feet are off the ground. The perpetrators fixed Lei Ming's feet to the legs of the chair, and inserted an iron bolt through holes located in the armrests and tightly locked the bolt across his stomach. Then they cuffed his hands behind the back of the chair. One policeman cruelly tortured Lei Ming's neck with an electric baton several times.

At that time, several police officers entered the room, untied Lei Ming, and covered his eyes. The police then carried him into a car. Lei Ming lost a shoe during the arrest. The police had removed his belt, so his pants fell down. After Lei Ming got into the car, he heard sirens, as if he were in a motorcade. Lei Ming did not know where he had been taken. After more than a 30 minute drive, the cars stopped and the police removed his eye cover. It was about 9 p.m. or 10 p.m. Because it was relatively dark, he could barely make out a building, but noticed that it was a tall building, surrounded by walls. He also noticed an iron gate had just had been closed behind them.

The policemen dragged Lei Ming into a room, which was filled with tiger benches, electric batons, plastic bags, a big iron bucket, an electric stove, and so on. The room had simple upholstery and looked like a hotel room that was no longer in use. The room had no heat. The police put Lei Ming on the tiger bench, tightly tied his feet with a thin rope, and then locked him in place at the abdomen with an iron bolt. To increase the torture, they cuffed his hands behind his back, causing Lei Ming's armpits to face the back of the chair. Then they passed a leather belt through the handcuffs, crossed it in front of the chair legs and pulled on it. Two of the police cruelly pulled the belt downwards and attempted to buckle the belt on the tightest notch. Because the leather bolt was attached to the handcuffs, his arm muscles were stretched by the pulling and he suffered unbearable pain. Lei Ming used all his strength to resist being buckled so tightly, and succeeded in preventing it, until one of the policemen furiously kicked the handcuffs; the belt was cinched at the moment. Lei Ming fainted from the pain. Sweat covered his body and the pain was excruciating. At that moment, Lei Ming could not move his body at all.

After this, the police were exhausted. As it was cold in the room, they turned on the electric stove and sat down to chat. A police chief surnamed Gao, defamed Teacher. Although Lei Ming was in the midst of unbearable pain, he loudly told the police: "Stop that!" Gao went into a rage, rushed at Lei Ming and slapped his face over and over, until he was too tired to continue. Then two police officers brought an electric baton, removed his clothing to expose his chest and neck and pulled off his pants to show his private parts. Then they tortured Lei Ming with electric batons on his neck, mouth, thigh, chest, private parts and anus, which caused excruciating pain. He could not stop himself from screaming in pain. The police did not stop until the batteries in the electric batons were drained.

Scars left on Lei Ming by tortures inflicted by the Changchun City Police Department police in March 2002. This photo was taken two years after Lei Ming's release from prison.

Next, another two policemen covered Lei Ming's head with a plastic bag. They made it so tight that Lei Ming could not breathe and almost suffocated. When he was on the verge of suffocation they loosened the bag. After allowing Lei Ming just a few breaths, they covered him again. They repeatedly tortured him like that until the electric batons were recharged. Then the other two policemen increased the torture. They took a screwdriver, heated it on the stove, and burned Lei Ming's neck. The skin on his neck was destroyed.

Police of Changchun City Police Department caused the scar on Lei Ming's neck with a hot screwdriver and electric batons. This photo was taken two years after Lei Ming was released.

Lei Ming clenched his teeth to endure the great pain. Then the police tortured Lei Ming even worse. They shocked the wounded areas with electric batons, and then poured water down his neck. The pain was unimaginably excruciating and the room was filled with terror. The police put a big iron bucket on Lei Ming's head and hit the bucket as hard as they could with a big iron bar to deafen his ears.

The policemen also inserted one end of a wooden stick into Lei Ming's anus, and wedging the other end of the stick onto the chair back; they tortured his anus with an electric baton, which caused indescribable pain.

After four or five hours, Lei Ming's arms and wrist bones were stretched out of shape. The pain was unbearable and he was sweating profusely. His clothes were soaked. Lei Ming pulled the belt with his wrists until it broke. The policemen tried to buckle it again, but were unable to, no matter how hard they tried. One of them took Lei Ming's hands, which were cuffed behind his back, and exerted all his strength to lift them up. This forced Lei Ming's chest to tightly touch his thighs, and his stomach was pressed by the iron stick. They tortured him in this posture for five minutes, and then they tried to tie him with a rope. But they could not tie him tightly. At that point they then opened the handcuffs and locked them to the armrest. Because both of his hands had been forcefully pulled and stretched, his right arm was disjointed. His right forearm was badly bruised and swung lifeless. Both hands were swollen, and his fingers were two to three times their regular size.

The police took turns torturing Lei Ming for the entire night. Later, the police were exhausted and went home to sleep. Two of the policemen stayed behind to watch Lei Ming, but both fell into deep sleep. At that time, Lei Ming wanted to leave. He broke the handcuff off of his left hand by smashing it onto the armrest. Unfortunately his right hand could not break off the cuff because he had no strength left in it. So he broke it with his left hand. Lei Ming's hands could move now, so he tried to untie the rope on his feet. He untied the thick rope, but the thin rope was too tight. Also, his fingers were too swollen. He could not untie the rope. The iron bar was also an obstacle. When the police woke up and found that Lei Ming had broken the handcuffs, they punched and kicked him again.

Lei Ming was held there for two days, after which the police took him to another hotel. They brought the iron tiger bench along. He was in the second hotel for another two days. Thus, he was tied to the iron chair for four days and nights. After the police had tortured him they took him to Tiebei Detention Center.

At the detention center, he was told to take off his clothes for inspection. The guards at the detention center saw Lei Ming was severely wounded and refused to accept him. But after the Police Department had a discussion with the guards; they agreed to accept Lei Ming. After Mr. Lei entered the prison cell, he needed to take a shower and have a haircut. When he took off his clothes and his injuries were revealed the prisoners were shocked. Some grinned and some turned their head away. The black burn marks and scars from the electric shocks were all over his body, including on his wrists, arms and feet. It was horrible to look at. At that time, the prisoner in charge said: "I did not believe that Falun Gong was persecuted so severely. Today, after seeing this, I believe that the Communist Party is going to collapse."

The police officers who tortured Lei Ming are: Liu Huibin, Jiang Tao, Gao Hang, Jiang Bo, a chief with the surname of Gao, etc.

The Trial of Mr. Lei Ming and Other Practitioners

After Mr. Lei Ming was held in the detention center for more than six months, Changchun City Intermediate Court illegally put some practitioners on trial for intercepting TV signals. On September 18, 2002, eleven male practitioners from the Changchun City Detention Center were carried into cars flanked by two armed policemen each. Two other passenger cars filled with fully armed police officers followed them. Several police cars cleared the way at the front of the motorcade. Four female practitioners from the Third Changchun Detention Center were also brought to the court. When they arrived at the courthouse, bailiffs replaced the police officers. Fifteen practitioners escorted by 30 bailiffs entered the court in a line.

    Changchun City Intermediate Court

The practitioners who entered the courtroom first, shouted loudly, "Falun Dafa is great!" Other practitioners behind them also shouted, "Falun Dafa is great" in unison. More than 300 people were sitting in the courtroom, and the bailiffs took the practitioners one by one into a disciplinary room. Three policemen were inside the room, and each held a high-voltage electric baton to shock the practitioners until they stopped shouting. They then took the practitioners back into the courtroom. When some practitioners shouted, "Falun Dafa is great" again, they were rushed back to the disciplinary room.

The third time in the courtroom, the police officers sealed practitioners' mouths to prevent them from shouting. During the trial, the practitioners were deprived of their right to defend themselves. If they uttered just a few words, their microphones were forcibly taken away. The trial was just for show. After the trial was completed, the practitioners were taken to a room one by one and had their fingerprints taken. The practitioners resisted, and the police officer forcefully pressed their hands onto the paper. After the fingerprints of all the practitioners were taken, they were sent back to the detention center.

On September 20, the court was supposed to hold another trial. The court was afraid of hearing the practitioners shout, "Falun Dafa is great!" so the sentence notices of the practitioners were sent directly to the detention center. All the practitioners appealed their sentences to the Jilin Province People's High Court on October 20. Before the hearing, a police officer told fifteen practitioners that there was no need to shout, and if they were not satisfied with the sentence, they were allowed to appeal again. But when the chief justice decided to uphold the original sentence, the practitioners realized that they had been deceived. There was no more chance to appeal. The judicial and public security organizations had become the accomplices of Jiang Zemin's regime in committing crimes.

Mr. Lei Ming Suffers Brutal Torture in Jilin Province Prison

On October 25, 2002, Mr. Lei Ming and other ten male practitioners were taken to the Jilin Province Prison, and were split up in eleven different prison wards. Lei Ming was sent to the Fourth Ward. In the cell, the inmates searched Mr. Lei' s body, and then forced him to sit on a plank with both legs straight and his back erect, both hands on his knees. If he moved even a bit, he was beaten. One inmate hit the back of Lei Ming's head twice.

After lunch, an inmate summoned Lei Ming out to the corridor, and ordered him to write the "four statements" [similar to the three statements]. Mr. Lei refused, so the inmate threatened to send him to the Strict Discipline Team, where people were tortured mercilessly. The inmate talked to him for a long time, but Lei Ming was very firm. Another inmate joined them. They sat on both sides of Mr. Lei and punched him in the eyes, knocking him prone onto the bed.

When Mr. Lei slowly got up, they beat him again. They also used a bamboo plank to hit Lei Ming's forehead. When Mr. Lei refused to compromise, they found two more inmates and pushed Mr. Lei to the ground. Two inmates held his legs, one held his hands, and another one pulled off his pant. They yanked Mr. Lei's genitalia so hard that he almost passed out. Lei Ming struggled and shouted for help, but the inmates covered his mouth. He eventually broke loose. Then one of the inmates brought some iron rings with the intent of shackling Mr. Lei to the bed.

Mr. Lei realized that the inmates would continue torturing him until they achieved their goal of getting him to renounce Falun Gong. One inmate said, "You have three hours to consider." Another said, "Give him half an hour." Lei Ming had no choice, as he would rather die than compromise his beliefs. When Mr. Lei came back from the restroom, he smashed his head against a wall, and immediately fainted with his head bleeding. Those four inmates did not give up, and continued to punch and kick him. (Note: fellow practitioners, please cherish your body. Under no circumstances should suicide and self-inflicted injury be allowed. The evildoers, who persecuted Mr. Lei to such a desperate state, will surely be punished by law and by justice.) Then a policeman came and sent Lei Ming to the prison hospital with two of his torturers. Mr. Lei received several stitches on his head, and was sent to the Strict Discipline Team.

The guards ordered the inmates of the Strict Discipline Team to torture Mr. Lei. Four or five inmates carried him to a special bed. They stretched Lei Ming's arms to the maximum and then secured both his ankles and hands to the bed with iron rings. His hands and feet became swollen and he sweated profusely. In that position, Mr. Lei could not move at all, and he depended on the inmates to feed him. He was allowed to use the toilet twice a day. After two days, the discomfort became unbearable as if ants were crawling all over his bones. His heart ached with every pulse on his wrist, and the pain was excruciating. On the third day, the pain in Lei Ming's body was beyond description, and he broke down and wrote the "four statements." The inmates had achieved their goal and freed Mr. Lei from the bed. They continued to abuse him, and ordered him to sit for a long time with his legs crossed loosely, back straight, and both hands on his knees. If he moved, they beat him. Lei Ming was forced to sit from 5 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Due to the prolonged time of sitting, his buttocks became raw, blisters formed, blood oozed, and maggots grew.

Lei Ming was forced to sit for long time in the Jilin Prison. As a result, his buttocks became raw and formed scabs.

Scars remained on Lei Ming's ankle from torture in the Jilin Prison

During the first month of physical abuse, the prison police and guards of the Fourth Ward talked to Mr. Lei incessantly, asking him what was on his mind. Lei Ming told them that he had been forced against his will to write the "four statements" and wanted to nullify them. The guards said, "We were going to set you free, but now we can't because of your thoughts." They continued to detain Mr. Lei in the Strict Discipline Team month after month. After more than four months, he was finally allowed to leave.

After Lei Ming returned to the Fourth Ward, they continued to punish him, and he had to sit from 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. except for eating and going to the toilet. Due to the long-term physical punishment, the muscles on Lei Ming's legs became weak. His legs were sore and unable to function properly, and he found it very difficult to carry the wash basin to wash his face in the morning. The perpetrators continued to physically abuse Lei Ming. One day, when the Education Section subjected the practitioners to a "psychological examination," Lei Ming suddenly remembered that he had not written his solemn declaration. He then wrote it on the back of the exam paper, and handed it in. On the following day, the guards from the Fourth Ward talked with Mr. Lei. Lei Ming told them why he had written the solemn declaration, and the police officers were speechless.

On a different occasion, Lei Ming and another practitioner were forced to sit for a long time. An inmate discovered they were talking during the physical punishment, and kicked them once each. When the practitioners asked the inmate why he kicked them, two more inmates came to lift Lei Ming up, while another inmate punched his face several times. As a result, his face became very swollen.

Lei Ming was physically punished for nearly three months, and one day his heart suddenly started beating very fast and he refused to go to sit. The inmates reported to the guards, and the guards took Mr. Lei to a doctor. The doctor tested his heart rate and found it was more than 100 beats per minute. The guard took Lei Ming back to the cell, and said to the two inmates who supervised him, "It is your problem if you don't make him sit; but if Lei refuses to go sit, then that's his problem." Obviously, the police wanted the inmates to force Lei Ming to sit. Mr. Lei, however, refused to do so. The two inmates discussed the situation and attempted to force him, but Lei Ming was very firm. The inmates had no choice but to leave him alone. Mr. Lei finally was able to break away from the evil environment. He suffered in the Strict Discipline Team for nearly seven months. As a result, he became extremely weak and emaciated, and he stayed in the cell.

In September of 2003, Lei Ming and other practitioners enlightened to an understanding that they should resist the persecution with righteous belief and leave the evil den.

On October 1, China's National Day, the prisoners who monitored the practitioners were given a break to enjoy themselves on the second and third floor of the prison building, where the entertainment facilities were located. The prisoners were able to freely participate in the activities, and the practitioners were even allowed to walk around. Lei Ming used this opportunity and went to the second floor to find practitioner Liu Chengjun (who was later persecuted to death). He shared with Mr. Liu the idea of having all practitioners go on a hunger strike to resist the persecution inside Jilin Prison, and Liu Chengjun agreed.

About 10 days later, after hearing that Liu Chengjun had been on a hunger strike for many days, all the practitioners in the prison also gradually went on a hunger strike and refused to do forced labor. This righteous action shocked the prison guards and they immediately held a meeting to deal with the practitioners. After the meeting, the guards closed off all the floors in the building and did not allow anyone to go in and out of the prison, fearing the practitioners would have contact with each other. They also had the prisoners spread rumors such as, "Practitioners in the other prison ward started eating," or "Some practitioners were taken to the Strict Discipline Team and were forced-fed." Some practitioners stopped the hunger strike due to the brutal tortures and the information blockade in the prison.

One day in February 2004, two prison guards and a prisoner suddenly appeared in the prison building and told everyone to line up for a body search. They found that Lei Ming and another practitioner were carrying copies of Chapters 1 and 3 of Zhuan Falun. When the guards asked the other practitioner who the copies belonged to, Mr. Lei answered that they were his. The prison guards then questioned Lei Ming, but he maintained righteous belief and refused to answer their questions, and they gave up.

After conducting the body search, the guards then ordered the practitioners to go out into the hallway while they searched each cell. They found a copy of a hand-written "Hongyin" from practitioner Wang Hongge's toolbox. The two guards discussed with each other and found four prisoners to take Lei Ming to the Strict Discipline Team and locked Wang Hongge in a small isolated room. The Strict Management Team physically tortured Lei Ming. Mr. Wang was locked in the small room for a week, and was then transferred to the Siping Prison.

In the Strict Management Team, prison guards Li Yongsheng, Tan Fuhua, and Wang Yuanchun from the Education Division asked Lei Ming many times to "talk" to them and tell them where he had gotten the lectures from. Mr. Lei did not tell them anything. A guard from the Fourth Ward also talked to Lei Ming numerous times, and told him that they would release him from the Strict Discipline Team once he signed a statement to never read or pass on Falun Gong materials. Mr. Lei rejected the offer and was given a notification that he would continue to be locked in the Strict Discipline Team.

When his term was over, the prison guard asked Lei Ming to sign the notification again, but he still refused. The guard then ordered Mr. Lei to be locked in the Strict Disciple Team for another two months. During this time, Mr. Lei's health quickly deteriorated. The physical tortures he suffered this time worsened his health, and the injuries on his leg from being previously tortured had not completely healed. He needed to hold onto the wall in order to walk to the restroom. A prison guard from the Fourth Ward took Mr. Lei to the hospital for a checkup, which showed that his heart rate was 150 beats/minute, and he had high blood pressure (180 mmHg) and anemia. Still, the prison guard would not release Lei Ming on medical bail.

Ten days before Lei Ming's term ended in the Strict Discipline Team, his weight dropped dramatically from 100 to 65 pounds. The prisoners in the team feared that they would be held responsible for his health and called the guards in the Fourth Ward to check up on Mr. Lei. A prison guard came and interrogated Lei Ming. Seeing that Lei Ming couldn't stand straight during the interrogation, the guard gave him a chair to sit down. Still, the guard talked hypocritically to Mr. Lei saying, "How about this? I will ask that prisoner to write a statement for you. I promise the statement will not contain any words related to Falun Gong. This will be used just to show the leader, so he will have a reason to release you." Lei Ming thought that it would be fine to write a statement since it would not mention anything about Falun Gong. That afternoon, Lei Ming was released from the Strict Discipline Team and was carried back to the prison building by a prisoner because he couldn't walk that far anymore.

After returning to the prison building, Lei Ming realized that he shouldn't have signed any statement, as it meant that he had compromised with the evil. It was July when Mr. Lei was released from the Strict Discipline Team and he was very weak. He needed help to go to use the restroom and he could not take care of his own daily needs. The practitioners who didn't have to go out to work took care of Mr. Lei.

Lei Ming heard that the provincial 610 Office held a brainwashing session in Jilin Prison and that the prison guards from the Fourth Ward had given his name to the 610 Office. The 610 Office brainwashes practitioners by forcing them to do heavy labor from 6 a.m. to 12 midnight every day until their minds were "cleansed." After the 610 Office personnel left Jilin Prison, the prison's Education Division started its own brainwashing session that consisted of two groups. One group was led by guard Li Yongsheng and three prisoners. The second group was led by guard Wang Yuanchun from the Education Division. The first group tried to force practitioners to write the "Five Statements." If the practitioners refused, they would be sent to the Strict Disciple Team, strapped on a bed and physically tortured. Several practitioners including Wang Jian and Liu Gequn were forced to write the "Five Statements" this way.

Prison guard Wang Yuanchun from the second group went to Changchun for six months specifically to learn the "experience of transforming practitioners." Wang led the provincial 610 Office personnel and several collaborators to lock practitioners in an office in order to brainwash them. The authorities feared that the practitioners would strengthen their consciousness and awaken to righteousness, so they would sometimes force practitioners to sing karaoke to wear down their willpower.

By October, Lei Ming was persecuted to the point that he started to suffer from constant diarrhea and vomiting. This lasted for a month and did not improve. One night in November, Mr. Lei went to the restroom with the support of two prisoners. Before he got back to his prison cell, he had a hard time breathing and needed to rest. Right before he reached the door of his cell, he felt suffocated again. The next day, the guards from the Fourth Ward took Lei Ming to the hospital. It was found that he suffered from severe pulmonary tuberculosis. Mr. Lei had to stay in the prison hospital for two days before he was transferred to the Changchun Public Safety Hospital. There, he stayed for four days before he was again transferred to the Jilin Railroad Hospital. Fifteen days later, Lei Ming became so ill that the prison released him so he could seek medical treatment.

Someone from the prison had to carry Lei Ming home because his legs were disabled and the muscles had atrophied due to being tortured for a long time. Only 30 years old, Lei Ming couldn't walk or take care of himself anymore.

Cases of persecution against Falun Gong practitioners in Jilin Prison are too many to be recorded. The brutal tortures that Lei Ming suffered in Jilin Prison cannot fully describe the evilness of the CCP's persecution of Falun Gong practitioners. Currently, Jilin Prison still manipulates prisoners to persecute steadfast practitioners using various means to physically and mentally torture them. The prison tries very hard to keep its crimes from being exposed to the outside world.

Persecution of Falun Gong Practitioners at the Chaoyanggou Forced Labor Camp in Changchun City - Part 3

The Chaoyanggou Forced Labor Camp in Changchun City was originally under the jurisdiction of the Changchun City Judicial Bureau. Since July 20, 1999, the perpetrators at this labor camp have followed Jiang Zemin in its policy to brutalize practitioners. The labor camp authorities used very cruel and base means to treat practitioners. In December 2000, the Jilin Province Party Committee and the Jilin Province government designated the Chaoyanggou Forced Labor Camp as the brainwashing headquarters for "reforming" Falun Gong practitioners in Jilin Province. They detained male practitioners arrested from throughout Jilin Province, except for Baicheng and Yanbian, in this labor camp. Under instruction from the Jilin Province 610 Office, the perpetrators carried out planned and systematic persecution of illegally detained practitioners. Its official name contains the phrase "reform base" but in fact it is a horrific brainwashing base, where people's freedom of belief and personal rights are violated. It has been verified that at least 18 Falun Gong practitioners have been tortured to death here, and many practitioners have been injured or disabled from torture.

    Tortures

Over 100 forms of torture are used here, and the barbarity of many of them exceeds the scope of one's imagination. They deprive the practitioners of sleep, force them to stand in a humiliating posture with one's upper body bent down and the posterior sticking up. They beat and kick the practitioners, hit them with sticks and burn them with fire, pour water on them, and throw ice on them. They also force the practitioners to stand in sweltering heat, tie them up with ropes and shock them with electric batons. Some of the most often used torture methods are described below:

    Pouring well water on practitioners

The guards at the Chaoyanggou Forced Labor Camp, particularly in Division 5 where newly arrested practitioners are held, pick out the most vicious inmates and order them to strip the practitioners naked, shave of all of their hair, and pour 30 basins of cold water on each practitioner. They pour even more cold water on practitioners they don't like and then open the door and windows to let in cold air. The weather in northern China is especially cold in the spring, fall and winter. Such mistreatment is difficult to endure for even healthy people, let alone practitioners on hunger strikes and weakened as a result. They force the practitioners to stand against a wall or to stand with their backs bent and heads lowered for long periods of time. They often slap the practitioners' faces and hit and kick them. After several hours of such torture, they assign two inmates to monitor each practitioner, who is forced to sit on a small stool with his back straight. Practitioners who refuse to comply with the guards' unreasonable demands are forced to "take a cold shower." The water is drawn from a well and it's bone-piercingly cold. When we wash our hands in it, we feel pain shooting up our arms. It's hard to describe the feeling after being doused with the well water for a very long time. The guards never hesitated to torture practitioners this way.

Practitioner Mr. Ma Shengbo was held in Group 3, Division 6. Group head Li Zhongbo and administrative official Liu Yan stripped him naked on a snowy day. They opened the door and windows and then poured well water over him. Mr. Ma was shivering. Then he went into convulsions. He collapsed on the cold brick floor, curled into a ball and soon lost consciousness. The guards screamed, "Now will you write the 'guarantee statement'?" He didn't answer. The guards stabbed him with the sharp edge of a bamboo stick and left gaping wounds on Mr. Ma Shengbo's naked body. He was covered in blood. The guards then ordered inmates to rub pepper powder into his wounds, force-feed him with pepper water, and continue to torture him until he came to. They also dragged him by his legs back and forth on the floor.

    Long-term sleep deprivation

For practitioners who refuse to give up their belief or refuse to do slave labor, the guards hang them up with their hands behind them; force them to squat, stand, sit in a metal chair, or a plastic chair; refuse to let them eat or use the restroom; and don't let them sleep, sometimes for up to five days. Other inmates also monitor them and beat them whenever they close their eyes. Some practitioners lost consciousness while still in a squatting position, and some practitioners fell asleep while squatting. Almost all the practitioners are repeatedly tortured this way.

    Forced standing

Forced standing is one of the main methods of torture used by perpetrators at the Chaoyanggou Forced Labor Camp. There are several types of forced standing.

Standing against a wall. The practitioner is forced to stand facing a wall without moving. It looks easy to do but it's in fact extremely exhausting. One becomes dizzy after standing for a long time. It's especially difficult for elderly practitioners.

Standing under the sun. In July and August the practitioners are forced to stand outside, exposed to the sweltering heat.

Public standing. The practitioner is forced to stand in front of a crowd while the perpetrator announces why the practitioner is being "punished." Usually those practitioners who refuse to cooperate by refusing to respond to roll call, refusing to shout slogans, or refusing to wear name badges are the ones subjected to this humiliation. They even hang a sign around the practitioner's neck with Falun Gong-slandering and Teacher-slandering words on it.

    Forced squatting

Forced squatting is a routine torture used on newly arrested practitioners. The perpetrators call it "Face the wall and repent." The perpetrators pour cold water over the practitioner's head, and then force the practitioner to squat with hands locked and behind the head. The practitioner must squat approximately two inches away from a wall, facing it. The practitioner is forced to squat this way for at least four hours at a time. Many practitioners developed pain and numbness in their legs, and some lost consciousness.

    Forced sitting

The practitioners are forced to sit on a small stool with their hands on their knees, head raised, and back straight. The stool is about eight inches tall. The practitioner must sit from 5:30 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. Aside from eating and going to the restroom, the practitioner sits for 14 hours a day. Some practitioners sit for 20 hours a day, from 2:00 a.m. until midnight. If the practitioner makes the slightest movement while sitting on the stool, the perpetrators violently beat him. Some practitioners had congealed blood in their buttocks due to lack of circulation, and some practitioners became disabled. The guards didn't spare those who became disabled. Practitioner Mao Zengshun, who cannot walk, was savagely beaten several times for not being able to sit still.

    Double-crossing the legs

The perpetrators force the practitioners to double cross their legs for a very long time without moving. Some perpetrators even sit on the practitioners while the practitioners' legs are double-crossed. In the spring of 2002, the perpetrators beat practitioner Mr. Yang Shu cruelly in a vain attempt to make him give up his belief. Mr. Yang remained determined. The guards reported this to Wang Jiangang, the deputy head of the labor camp. Wang Jiangang ordered the guards to double cross Mr. Yang's legs. He specifically told the guards to not let Mr. Yang's legs down, even if he agreed to "reform" and make sure he would forever remember the "experience." The guards then forced Mr. Yang to double cross his legs and sat or stood on his legs. For a while Mr. Yang could be heard screaming on a daily basis while being tortured.

Another practitioner was forced to double cross his legs for several months. The inside of his thighs turned black. On December 24, 2001, guard Li Jun ordered inmates to beat practitioners Liu Hongwei, Wang Yonghe and others. Liu Hongwei lost consciousness. Li Jun ordered the inmates to remove the bedding and he made Liu Hongwei (after he came to) and Wang Yonghe to sit double-crossed on the bare wooden bunk for over 20 hours a day. They were barbarically beaten when they moved even slightly.

    Forced sitting on concrete ground

On May 11, 59-year-old practitioners Hao Hongfa and Zou Yanming refused to acknowledge the illegitimate charges levied against them. They refused to wear a name badge that said, "Disrupting the social order;" they refused to cooperate with brainwashing and refused to write a report. The labor camp authorities demanded that each practitioner turn in a monthly report of their "state of mind." Four perpetrators led by inmate Ji Wenquan took turns beating Mr. Hao Hongfa. They repeatedly kicked his kidney area and forced him to stand absolutely still for a long period, bend over with the arms stretched behind his body in the "flying the airplane" position. Mr. Hao's back and legs turned black from being beaten. Afterwards the perpetrators forced him to sit on the concrete floor from 7:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. for four days without any break.

    Electric shock

We don't know how many electric batons there are at Chaoyanggou Forced Labor Camp. They used 3,500-watt "siren" electric batons on the practitioners. The practitioners collapse on contact with this electric baton, yet no visible damage or scar appears on their bodies as the damage is done to internal organs. Some guards experiment with various sizes of electric batons on the practitioners. They tape the practitioners' mouths shut and shock them until no intact skin is left on their bodies and parts of their bodies become deformed.

They hang the practitioners up and shock various parts of their bodies. They handcuff the practitioners behind their backs, hang them up and shock their bodies. They fix the practitioners in a chair and shock them with electric batons. Almost all practitioners who persist in their belief of Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance are subjected to the latter abuse. When some practitioners were shocked in a chair five times, their hands and feet swelled and ulcerated, and they could barely walk.

The perpetrators also pour a basin of water on the floor and force the practitioner to stand barefoot on the wet floor; then they shock the practitioner with electric batons. The practitioner collapses and the torturers continue to shock him until the practitioner rolls on the floor. They proceed to strike the practitioner with axes handles and whip him with belts.

The perpetrators also shock the practitioner's ears, head, neck, armpits, genitals and anus. During the second round of attacks on practitioners, guard Li Junchong held practitioner Liu Hongwei's hands and feet together with two wooden sticks, then he shocked Liu Hongwei's anus with high-voltage electric baton(s). He also shocked practitioners Han Ziliang, Liu Baohua, Qu Hongkui, Zhuang Qianyong, Ding Yuande in his 50s, Li Manting in his 60s, and some others. They call the practitioner into a room and strip him naked. The guards brandish electric batons and a triangular belt (used to provide transmission in tractors) in front of the practitioner and demand the practitioner give up his belief. If he refuses, the guards use the belts to whip him all over, except his face.

Shocking the face with electric batons is forbidden by law, yet it is common practice at this labor camp. Many practitioners' faces were completely disfigured from electric shock.

The perpetrators also shock the practitioner from head to toe continuously without a break.

They shock the sensitive parts of the practitioners' body, such as the tip of the nose, the eyelids, the temples, the lips, the tip of their fingers and toes, the soles of their feet and the insides of their thighs.

Practitioner Hu Shiming is 54 years old. The perpetrators stripped him of all of his clothes. They poured cold water on him, then boiling water, until large blisters appeared all over his back. They also shocked his genitals with 30,000-volt electric baton(s). The inmates who were present called the guards "pigs."

The guards also force the electric baton inside the practitioner's mouth and shock him. In April 2002, practitioner Yang Shu from the Shuangyang District refused to write a guarantee statement. He was beaten until one of his toenails fell off. Then he was forced to sit on a small stool for a long time and sit with both legs crossed while the inmates sat on his legs. The guards even shocked the inside of his mouth with electric baton(s).

    Various forms of beating

Beating practitioners is commonplace at the Chaoyanggou Forced Labor Camp. People often hear the electric batons snapping and the guards cursing and slapping the practitioners' faces. They demand that the practitioners repent and give up Falun Gong practice and beat the practitioners if they refuse. The guards and inmates often slap the practitioners' faces. In August 2003 practitioner Mr. Guan Xingxian was slapped until he lost the hearing in both ears. He never recovered. In early April 2002 more than 20 practitioners were sent away, and soon people heard them screaming in pain. Practitioner Yang Shu was sent to Division 4 and soon carried back. His face was deformed from beating, and his head hurt for many days. He could not eat for a few days. Lu Guorong, a head inmate from Division 5, gagged practitioners with towels. He tied pins to chopsticks and used them to stab the practitioners' fingers.

There are several ways in which they hit the practitioners. Sometimes they kick the practitioners with hard boots and cause great pain. They strike the practitioners' head, face and back. They "chop" the practitioners' throat and neck with the side of their hands, causing the practitioners breathing difficulty. They also strike the practitioners' face with their hands and cause swelling. Some guards only use their hands to hit people.

The guards grab anything within reach to whack the practitioners. They use wooden sticks, the leg of a chair, a mop handle, broom handle, a triangular belt, an axe handle, a police baton, a white plastic tube, a metal pipe, metal cables, a piece of bamboo and other things. They hit the practitioner with the bamboo until it shatters and the splinters stick in the flesh. Then they rub laundry detergent and salt into the wounds and pour cold water on the practitioner. Practitioner Zhou Jian from Baishan City, Jilin Province had his nose broken from beating. His body was covered in wounds and he spewed blood. The guards even turned practitioner Mr. Sun Xianming's arm 360 degrees and finally pulled it from the socket. Guard Zhu Shenglin saw that Mr. Sun could not move. He sneered and said, "What's wrong with you? You can't move? Here, I'll help you." He violently shook Mr. Sun's dislocated arm, and Mr. Sun screamed. His body trembled and he broke out in a cold sweat. Practitioner Zhou Jian, an employee from the Baishan Electricity Plant, was beaten until his head swelled enormously and people couldn't recognize him. Two people had to hold him to eat. He was bedridden for over two months.

In 2003, practitioner Mr. Ma Shengbo from Nongan County persisted in his belief in Falun Gong and resisted brainwashing and persecution. Guards Li Zhongbo, Wang Tao and others stripped off his clothes except his underwear and shocked him with three electric batons. They kicked him to the floor and continued to shock him until all three batons ran out of electricity. They then whipped him with No. 8 metal construction wire until it broke. They thrashed him with a piece of bamboo until it shattered and splinters stuck in the wounds. They rubbed detergent in his wounds and dragged him to the shower room. They opened the door and windows and poured freezing well water over him. It was early April and it's chilly, even for people in sweaters, yet the guards forced him to lie on the concrete floor for several hours while the inmates pinned him down and constantly poured cold water on him. Mr. Ma Shengbo persisted in his belief in Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance. They kicked his kidney area, whipped his back, thighs and calves with thick wooden planks until his body swelled, then they whipped him with a No 8 metal wire, which left wounds about 0.4 inch in depth. They rubbed salt and detergent into the wounds, then they poured a dozen basins of cold water on him.

Guards often beat practitioner Mr. Wang Zhidong and his body was soaked in blood. His body later swelled. In the winter, the guards stripped him naked and forced him to lie on the floor. They poured cold water on him until he curled into a ball. He shivered and could not speak.

    Kicking the kidneys

The perpetrators force the practitioners to bend over and then violently dig into the practitioners' kidney area with their shoes. The practitioners cannot walk afterwards.

    "1,000 swords through the heart"

They inserted toothpicks under the nail bed of the practitioners' fingers and toes.

"Splitting the body with five horses"

They handcuff the practitioner's arms and legs to the railings on the upper and lower bunk of two neighboring beds. They suddenly pull the beds apart so the practitioner is forced into a spread eagle position. The cuffs cut into the flesh and the hands and feet gradually turn black due from the blood circulation being cut off.

    Hanging in mid-air

They tie the practitioner's hands together behind him with a rope. Then they tie the other end of the rope to a metal pipe fixed to the ceiling. When they pull on the rope, the practitioner is lifted off the ground and hangs in midair. Practitioner Mr. Li Gen from Nongan County was hung up, his ribs were broken, and his body deformed from beating. Later, the perpetrators took off his clothes and forced him to stand outside in sweltering heat because he could not work. The guards screamed at him, "We won't let you off the hook!"

    The Big Hang-up

The guards cuff the practitioner's hands behind his back, put a police rope through the handcuffs, and then hang the practitioner up. They shock the practitioner with electric batons while he is dangling in the air. The practitioner cannot move his limbs and is forced into a severely hunchbacked position. He quickly loses feeling in his arms and experiences excruciating pain.

There are other ways that the guards hang up the practitioners. The guards handcuff the practitioner's hands and put a rope through the handcuffs. They lift the practitioner's arms and tie the rope to a wooden beam above the door or to a metal pipe on the ceiling. Many practitioners were tortured this way.

    "Horizontal hanging"

The guards handcuff the practitioner's hands to the upper bunk of two neighboring beds and his feet to the lower bunk of the same beds so his body is spread-eagled. They then pull the beds in opposite directions until the practitioner's body is almost split in two. Then eight perpetrators strike the practitioner with bamboo poles, axe handles, triangular belts, police batons and electric batons. It is difficult to estimate how many practitioners have been tortured this way.

    "Hanging like an airplane"

The perpetrators handcuff the practitioner's hands behind his back and tie the handcuffs to the railing on the upper bunk so that the practitioner's feet barely touch the ground and his body is in the shape of an airplane. The perpetrators wrap his head in clothes. All of his body weight falls on his wrists. This torture was widely used to "reform" practitioners after August 2002. Later they replaced police ropes with handcuffs. They shock the practitioner's armpits with electric batons while he is hung up. The electric shock sends the practitioner into convulsions. After the skin is scorched, they proceed to shock another part of the body and release the practitioner only after he has lost consciousness. Many practitioners' arms are broken when they are let down.

    "Hanging behind the back"

The practitioner's hands are cuffed behind his back and a rope is fed through the handcuffs and tied to a window frame or a bed pole. The position of the practitioner in this abuse is lower than in "hanging like an airplane."

In March 2003, practitioner Mr. Pan Wei persisted in his belief in Falun Gong. The guards ordered a dozen inmates to drag him by his feet into the interrogation room. They stripped him naked and shocked him with electric batons. He remained determined. Then they struck him with a shovel and whipped him with a triangular belt. They poured cold water on him and continued to beat him. When they were exhausted from beating, they nipped the inside of his thighs and pulled his toenails. One of his toenails was pulled out; the other nine were black and blue and oozed pus for over a month.

    "Sweating through the paper"

They force the practitioner to bend over at a 90-degree angle with his arms raised high behind his body. They put a sheet of paper on the floor to catch the sweat dripping from the practitioner's nose.

    Brutal force-feeding

The authorities are afraid when the practitioners hold a hunger strike. They force-feed the practitioners with corn porridge laced with large amounts of salt. The guard orders several inmates to pin the practitioner down, pry his mouth open with a tool which often causes profuse bleeding or that knocks out a few teeth. They insert a tube into the stomach through the nose. After force-feeding, they drag the practitioner back and forth on the floor, saying it will "improve digestion." They punch the practitioner in the stomach and don't allow him to drink water. Force-feeding is being used as a form of torture at the Chaoyanggou Forced Labor Camp.

Savage beatings and scraping the flesh

Many detainees at the labor camp developed scabies due to the terrible hygiene at the labor camp. On January 18, 2001 [Chinese lunar calendar], many practitioners including Fu Yan, Yu Qingbin and Xie Rongchun had scabies. Pus and blood soaked their pants when they were forced to sit on small stools. Their hands except the fingertips were also covered in scabies. Incited by the guards, the inmates whipped the practitioners with the soles of hard plastic shoes. Yun Qingbin almost lost consciousness. Three inmates took turns beating Fun Yan, hitting him more than 100 times until the inmates were exhausted. Fu Yan's body, particularly the inside of his thighs, were covered in blood. The inmates then scraped chunks of battered flesh off Fu Yan's body with a sharp metal spoon. The pain was beyond words. Large beads of sweat formed on Fu Yan's face and forehead. The next day they scraped practitioner Xie Rongchun's hands and thighs until the lines on his palms were almost indistinguishable. They scraped him more than once.

Practitioner Bai Xiaojun from Northeast Normal University died after being scraped. Practitioners Tian Junlong and Gao Chengji suffered from a massive scabies outbreak and did not receive any medical treatment. They died soon after they were sent home.

    Solitary confinement

Solitary confinement is another punishment used at labor camps, and there are restricting guidelines for its administration. Practitioner Wang Qisheng, held at Division 5 of Chaoyanggou Labor Camp, was detained in solitary confinement for one month and nine days, during which he was savagely tortured.

The labor camp forced detainees to harvest corn in the fall. Practitioner Ma Xiaodong was too weak to work in the fields. Wang Yanwei, head of the labor camp; Wang Jiangang, deputy head of the labor camp; group head Zhu Dequan; and administrative official Lu Zhanmin brutally beat Mr. Ma Xiaodong and injured his left eye. His left calf was wounded and he had chest pains for a few days after the beating. He was locked in solitary confinement and was hung up 24 hours a day. Guard He Jianxin punched him after he was hung up. He was given half a bowl of watery corn porridge.

Practitioner Mr. Jiao Mingfeng persisted in practicing Falun Gong. Guard Wang Kai from Division 1 ordered an inmate to beat him until he was disabled and could not take care of himself. When Wang Yanwei, head of the labor camp, ordered Mr. Jiao Mingfeng to work, he refused. Wang Yanwei kicked Mr. Jiao's kidney area and slapped his face repeatedly. He sent Mr. Jiao to solitary confinement, where he is hung up day and night.

Falun Gong Practitioner Zhang Peiyun Suffers Brutal Torture in Panzhihua City

On July 11, 2005, several police officers from the Security Branch of the Panzhihua City Police Department arrested practitioner Ms. Zhang Peiyun. Ms. Zhang Peiyun had left home and gone from place to place for almost four years in order to avoid persecution. One of the officers said to her, "See how we will deal with you. Just await your death." Zhang Peiyun was sent to Yanbian Detention Center.

In late August, during an interview with a lawyer, Ms. Zhang Peiyun described how she had suffered after the arrest. The police from the Security Branch of Panzhihua Police Department took her from the detention center for interrogation. They used torture during an illegal interrogation in order to extort a confession. This took place in Jingu Hotel, located in Yanbian County.

Police Zou Yongjun and others hung Zhang Peiyun by her handcuffs from the window frame for several days and nights, which caused Zhang Peiyun to be unable to move her arms even when she was talking with her lawyer, almost two months after the torture had been carried out. Police officer Zou Yongjun and another officer also brutally beat her. One policewoman stomped on Zhang's stomach to abuse her. Zhang was deprived of sleep for several days and nights. They poured cold water on her if she closed her eyes, and her body was often soaked.

Even when she was suffering from being hung up, beaten and insulted, Zhang Peiyun still kept advising the police kindly, "Falun Gong teaches people to follow the principles of 'Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance' and to be a good person. I am not guilty. I'm almost the same age as your parents. You should not beat me." However, the police didn't listen to the advice and still brutally tortured her.

On August 16, 2005, Ms. Zhang Peiyun was officially charged and arrested. She was sent to the Panzhihua City Detention Center. The authorities intend to illegally sentence her.

Severe Persecution of Falun Gong Practitioners in the 2nd Women's Prison, Yunnan Province

The 2nd Women's Prison of Yunnan Province is a place where many female practitioners are illegally detained with heavy sentences. Currently, there are about 50 practitioners being detained in this prison.

Ms. Zhou Tao, 22 years old and firm in her belief, was illegally sentenced to seven years of imprisonment. When the prison guards ordered everyone who crossed the security line to say, "Officer, a criminal has crossed the line," Ms. Zhou said, "A Falun Gong practitioner has crossed the line!" instead. As punishment, the police forced her to stand for an entire day. In order to protest against the persecution, Ms. Zhou went on a hunger strike that lasted more than a month. During that time, the police ordered criminals without medical knowledge to insert a tube into her throat for forced feeding, and this made her neck swell badly. Her life was in danger because of this, but the police still tried to force her to admit guilt to crimes that she did not commit. Despite being devastated to such a weakened state, Ms. Zhou still shook her head, insisting on her innocence. Seeing this, even the guards were deeply moved.

When Ms. Zhu Lan first came to the prison, she was persistent in her belief in Falun Gong, so the police often punished her by forcing her to stand under the baking sun, often until she fainted. However, she was deceived by some collaborators and was consequently "transformed."

Ms. Guo Ling, about 40 years old, worked in the Local Product Company in Kunming City before being illegally sentenced to seven years of imprisonment. Because she had contracted polio when she was a child, her movements were already severely impaired. However, the police still forced her to walk several kilometers every day without any help. They also ordered three criminals to monitor her around the clock to ensure that she did what she was ordered. She was even monitored in the toilet and prohibited from talking to others. Ms. Guo went on a hunger strike, but the police tied her thin body to a bed and ordered criminals to force feed her. Under such circumstances, she persisted for 56 days. She was often kept in confinement. She has been detained for nearly six months, and her current status is unknown.

Ms. Wei Yumei, about 50 years old, was illegally sentenced to five years of imprisonment. She was firm in her practice of Falun Gong. Not long after she was bailed out for medical treatment, she was again illegally arrested by seven to eight police officers. Without any reason, the police officers dragged Ms. Wei, who had a severe heart problem, along the ground before imprisoning her. Currently, she has been in confinement for half a year because she refuses to admit guilt to crimes that she did not commit. Ms. Wei's heart problem is extremely severe and, because of her condition, she should be bailed out for immediate medical treatment. However, the police have even refused to allow her daughter to see her.

Ms. Miao Qing, 41 years old, was an art teacher in Yunnan Art School. She was illegally arrested from her class in October 2003. Her husband was also an art teacher in the same school. Both Ms. Miao and her husband were talented artists. When she was arrested, her husband's cash, computer and art tools, valued at more than fifty thousand yuan, were confiscated. Such means of illegally arresting individuals and confiscating property are typical of the 610 Office and State Security Police. After Ms. Miao was illegally arrested, she persisted in resisting the persecution by repeatedly going on hunger strikes. When the police and criminals tried to tie her up and force-feed her, she tried to get away by jumping down from a high building in order to resist the force-feeding. As a result, she injured her back and broke one of her legs. Yet, the prison did not give her any medical treatment at all at this time, but she recovered her health with her persistant belief in Falun Gong. Ever since her imprisonment, her status has been unknown.

Since March of this year, the No.2 Women's Prison of Yunnan Province has been severely persecuting many Falun Gong practitioners. Their hideous deeds include confinement, forcing practitioners to admit being guilty of crimes that they did not commit, prohibiting practitioners from cleaning themselves and many other tactics. Everyday, practitioners are only allowed to have three toilet breaks. Some practitioners are forced to sit on a small stool without moving for 16 hours a day, while others are handcuffed to beds. The guards use electric batons, electric beds, handcuffs, standing punishments and many other means to persecute practitioners. The police guards even command the criminal inmates to hit practitioners with stools in order to compel them to admit their guilt. The 2nd Women's Prison of Yuan Province is considered a "cultured and civilized" unit in the province, yet their so-called "humane management" is just another lie to deceive the public and the world.

At present the Yunnan police have gone to Sichuan Province for further training in their persecution skills. They hope to use these skills to persecute more Falun Gong practitioners and receive promotions.

More Facts of the Persecution of Falun Gong Practitioners in Jinzhou Forced Labor Camp

This article discloses some facts about how personnel in the Jinzhou Forced Labor Camp have persecuted Falun Gong practitioners since August 2004.

On August 12th, 2004, practitioner Wang Lin was sent to the Jinzhou Forced Labor Camp and placed in a newly formed team. As soon as he arrived, the instructor asked him, "Will you put on the vest?" Wang Lin replied, "No." Seven to eight criminal prisoners then beat Wang Lin savagely while the instructor watched from the sidelines. They sent Wang Lin to a solitary cell and tied his hands and feet to a metal chair. Then they put a safety helmet on his head and proceeded to beat hard on the helmet. Wang Lin's head hummed constantly after this. Wang Lin had been on hunger strike for several days at that time and was extremely weak. He was tied to the chair for 24 hours. That day it was raining outside, and Wang Lin trembled from the cold all night long. The next morning they pulled Wang Lin down from the chair and handcuffed him to the floor. His hands were kept in handcuffs during the day and only one hand was released during the night.

At the beginning of September 2004, perpetrators in Jinzhou City Forced Labor Camp started another round of "aggressive conversion." From the beginning to the end of September, the camp's second team guards, as well as the guards from the Education Section and Administration Section, all participated in the persecution.. The police handcuffed practitioners to the heating duct or made them sit on a one square-foot stool. Sometimes they handcuffed practitioners to a table leg or the leg of a stool. Then they would put the tape recorder earphones into the ears of the practitioners, turn up the volume to the loudest setting, and force practitioners to listen to the slanderous recording.

Those practitioners who resisted brainwashing were subjected to excruciating torture. One of the common tortures they employed, which was extremely painful, was called "leg wrapping." It works like this: First the practitioners are forced to double-cross their legs. Then the perpetrators use bed sheets to tie up the double-crossed legs for up to three hours at a time. Usually practitioners cannot walk after the ties are loosened. However, after practitioners are released from the leg wrapping, the criminal prisoners immediately force them to get up and walk.

After the atrocities of Jinzhou City Forced Labor Camp were disclosed by the international media, several police came up with the "leg wrapping" method, which is an even more covert torture. This kind of torture is even crueler and does not show the injuries people have sustained. Police officer Li Songtao invented further tortures. Once practitioners are tied up with the leg wrappings, their hands would be cuffed, and a wooden club would be put under the practitioner's buttocks. To prevent Falun Gong practitioners from shouting "Falun Dafa is good," the police invented another torture instrument called "the bit." This kind of torture instrument works like this: it encircles the practitioner with heavy-gauge metal wire into a circle with a tail that is inserted into the practitioner's mouth. The perpetrators then pressed the wire on top of the practitioner's tongue, and extended it into the throat. Then they used a string to tie the wire enclosure to the back of the head, securing it into position. Shortly after being subjected to this kind of torture, one would feel extremely nauseous. The following Falun Gong practitioners suffered this kind of torture for resisting brainwashing during this round of aggressive conversion.

Wang Lin was sent to The 2nd Group. The police detained him alone in one room. Wang Lin resisted the brainwashing and shouted loudly, "Falun Dafa is good!" As soon as he shouted, chiefs Li Songtao and Zhang Chunfeng immediately directed the criminal prisoners to tie up Wang's legs with the bed sheet. Li Songtao ordered how long Wang Lin would be tied up. Every three hours they would loosen the sheet and then tighten it again. During the wrapping process, the criminal prisoner, Zhang Tiejun, stomped on Wang Lin's thigh and twisted his legs. Wang Lin was not able to walk for three months. Even now Wang's kneecap is still sore.

One time criminal prisoners Wang Zhi and Zhang Tiejun tried to fill Wang Lin's mouth with their urine. These two evil people also smeared used toilet tissue on Wang Lin's leg. In order to prevent Wang Lin from shouting "Falun Dafa is good," they gagged him with a dirty dishcloth, put on "the bit", and shocked Wang Lin with an electric baton. He was sent to the second team for escalated conversion during the day and sent back to the newcomers' team at night. During that period of time Wang Lin's legs were tied up every day. Sometimes it was three times a day, once in the morning, afternoon and evening. After he was tied up till midnight he was sent back to the newcomers' team. During the aggressive conversion period, Wang Lin was tortured continuously for three days. Once Wang Lin was taken to the basement of an unfinished construction site, handcuffed behind the back and tortured with leg wrapping.

Falun Gong practitioner Jia Jingwen was incarcerated in a small cell for nearly four months. When he first arrived at the camp he was handcuffed onto a metal chair. The longest duration was three days. He was tortured this way four times. Jia Jingwen held a hunger strike in protest and was tortured with force-feeding. Once, Jia Jingwen agreed to eat, but the criminal prisoners still continued to force-feed him through the tube, pulling the tube in and out as torture.

During this aggressive conversion, police officer Li Houyu ordered the criminal prisoners to tie up Jia Jingwen's legs. Then Li started to attack Jia himself. Grasping a clothes hanger and a mop handle, he fiercely attacked Jia Jingwen's ankles and knees. Jia's ankles and knees quickly became severely bruised. Jia Jingwen's knee was swollen to the size of his thigh. The criminals lit cigarettes to burn Jia Jingwen's fingernails and toenails. Jia's hands and feet were also severely burned. After the torture, Jia could not walk, turn around, or squat when using the restroom. He could only sit to perform his bodily functions.

Several times after Jia Jingwen was tortured, his health was severely damaged. The labor camp feared that he might die so they took him to a hospital.

One time an inspection group came to the camp. Jia Jingwen happened to come out from his cell to go to the restroom as the group was passing by. When Jia Jingwen saw the inspection group, he immediately flung off the helmet and shouted loudly, "Falun Dafa is good!" The inspection group leader was Bai Jinglong. Bai ordered, "Cuff him!" Jia Jingwen tried to tell the facts to Bai Jinlong, but Bai didn't listen. Instead he ordered the labor camp to torture Jia Jingwen with handcuffing and the "leg wrap." Jia Jingwen told Bai, "The way you torture Falun Gong practitioners violates the law." Bai Jinlong loudly said, "Go ahead and sue me, my last name is Li."

Before practitioner Qi Mingli was sent to this camp, Jinzhou national security guards beat him so hard that he could not stand on his right leg. The national security guards pushed his leg outwards forcefully and severely injured his leg. During this aggressive conversion period in the labor camp, he also suffered other excruciating tortures. Later, Qi Mingli had scabies all over his body. To avoid infecting others, the camp authorities took him to a hospital three times, but he did not seem to get better. He also suffered from impaired vision. At this point Qi Mingli's vision has diminished severely. It is fuzzy and he cannot even distinguish one person from another. Even under such circumstances he was still forced to undergo brainwashing along with other firm practitioners.

Practitioner Liu Wansheng, even though he had been on hunger strike for a long time, was still subjected to leg wrapping, making him unable to walk. Two criminal prisoners carried him by the arms and dragged him to the restroom.

Practitioner Miao Jianguo was also detained separately in a room, handcuffed behind the back and tortured with leg wrapping.

All practitioners who did not write the three letters to renounce Falun Gong suffered continuous torment. The camp paid no attention to the appeals that practitioners filed.

The criminal prisoners who participated in the torture of practitioners include,

Zhang Tiejun from Jin County, Wang Zhi from Beining County, Liu Qiang from Jinzhou County, and others.

    The Persecution in 2005:

When they tried to force Chai Lianbao to convert, police officers Li Songtao and Zhang Chunfeng tortured him personally. They wrapped Chai Lianbao's legs and did not allow him to sleep during the night. They also instigated criminal prisoners Feng Ying, Pan Xuehai and Zhang Tiejun to brutally beat Chai. After the brutal beating they employed more forceful brainwashing. Wang Zhigang was also tortured with leg wrapping several times.

Guo Wei went on a hunger strike after being sent to this camp. He was force-fed twice and had his legs tied up. Zhang Zhigang and two practitioners from Heishan whose names are unknown, suffered different degrees of persecution. Three elderly practitioners also suffered. Practitioners Chai Lian Bao, Jiao Lin and Yan Bai were persecuted severely.

Li Yong from Jincheng, Liu Cheng from Yi County, Jiao Lin, Yan Bai from Shengnei, and Shao Minggang from Jinzhou were all tortured to the point of sickness and detained in a cell together. It is said that Shao Minggang and Li Yong's blood pressure had skyrocketed. Qi Mingli and Miao Jianguo also became very weak.

In the winter of 2003, Liu Cheng was once forced to stand for a long time on the concrete floor, which led to paralysis in both legs. After developing paralysis he was sent back home. However, before he fully recovered, he was arrested and taken back to the labor camp, being charged with "disrupting society and public security."

In July 2005, police officer Bai Jinlong directed criminal prisoners to brutally beat Liu Cheng. Before this, Liu Cheng could not stand by himself. He had to be carried by others even when going to the restroom. However, the criminal prisoners ordered him to walk after a fierce beating and would not stop beating him if he didn't walk. Bai Jinlong yelled at Liu Cheng, "I beat you and persecuted you, but what can you do?"

The police in the Jinzhou Forced Labor Camp are fierce and vicious. They also treat ordinary criminal prisoners ruthlessly. Once, in a meeting, a criminal prisoner whose name is Chang Jun moved a little bit slow. Bai Jinlong brought him to his office and slapped his face 27 times. Another time, when Officer Li Songtao saw criminal prisoner Qi Honggang wearing slippers, Li Songtao beat him, perforating his eardrum. After Qi Honggang's family members learned about his perforated eardrum, they sought an attorney to sue Li Songtao, but they have so far been unsuccessful. Later Qi Honggang was transferred to another team. The lawsuit was unable to go anywhere. Another time Li Songtao brutally beat criminal prisoner Li Defu. Li Songtao took off his shoe and fiercely attacked the back of Li Defu's head. Li Defu's head sustained a large bloody bump. Another day around noon Li Songtao was asleep. Criminal prisoner Zhang Chengyu spoke loud enough to disturb Li Songtao's sleep. He jumped up immediately and beat Zhang Chengyu savagely. Zhang's head and the area around the eyes swelled up. However, just shortly before this beating, Zhang Chengyu's family invited Li Songtao and Bai Jinlong for dinner and begged them to look after Zhang Chengyu. After Li Songtao beat Zhang Chengyu, he and Bai Jinlong threatened Zhang, "You are not permitted to tell your family anything about this." Before this, Zhang Chengyu was made to stand by Li Songtao, and Zhang Yanjun was ordered to squat.

At the Jinzhou Forced Labor Camp, the police could hurt people at will without any punishment due to the support they have from the director, Zhang Haiping.

The 2nd Group at the camp had also been collecting money wantonly. The camp has a retail store. The police do not let the criminal prisoners and practitioners shop there. Instead, they set up another retail outlet at the 2nd Group site. The store's prices were high, even several times higher than what they should be, and to top it all off the products were all inferior. Sometimes they also deceived people. On one occasion a criminal named Miao paid the police to buy pears. The 2nd Group police bought 5 kilograms but claimed it was 9 kilograms. The criminals' complaints can be heard everywhere but no one dares not to speak up to the authorities. This new retail outlet didn't have a business license. Thus, it is a black market operation for the benefit of the management.

Jinzhou Labor Camp also forces criminal prisoners and practitioners to make handicrafts, which the camp then sells for extra money.

Recent Arrests in Sanhe City, Hebei Province

During the period between September 10 and October 10, 2005, the 610 Office in Sanhe City arrested about 30 Falun Gong practitioners and brought them to the Langfang Brainwashing Center for persecution.

Before six o'clock in the morning on September 19, 2005, policemen along with Wang Lei from the 610 Office broke into Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Li Xiuqing's house. She lived in the No. 6 Building of Chengjianxin Village. They arrested Ms. Li and brought her to the Langfang Brainwashing Center for persecution. Ms. Li has been detained and persecuted several times. Ms. Li was only wearing thin clothes when she was arrested.

Around 10 o'clock in the morning on Sunday, October 9, when Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Xue Shuqing, who works at the Sanhe hospital, was walking to work, the police pushed him down and sent him to the Langfang Brainwashing Center. They also arrested his colleague, Guo Chunying, who is also a Falun Gong practitioner. Based on inside information, the police attempted to arrest them in the middle of September. However, they were on a vacation, so the police did not arrest them at that time. The police caught them secretly this time and did not go through any legal procedures.

At around 10 o'clock in the morning the same day, several policemen broke into Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Ai Xinghe's house in Xunyang County, Yangxianggong Village. They failed to arrest Ms. Ai since she was not home. At the same time, the police from the Xinjiahen Police Station broke into Falun Gong practitioner Pan Baozhong's house in Xiaowang Village. They also failed there because nobody was home.

At around 11 o'clock in the morning that same day, several policemen from the Huangzhuang County Police Station and the leader of the Huangzhuang First Division, Wang Baosong, broke into Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Gu Shuling's house. Ms. Gu asked for her husband's help. Her husband told them about the changes in her wife's mind and body after practicing Falun Gong and scolded them. Ms. Gu was not arrested due to their righteous thoughts in resisting the persecution.

Several policemen broke into Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Zhang Junjia's house in Zanxintun Village and wanted to arrest him. They did not succeed because nobody was home.

Afterward, the police broke into practitioner Mr. Li Qingzeng's house in Lizhuang Village. They wanted to arrest Mr. Li. Mr. Li's wife called the neighbors for help and her son picked up an iron rod to frighten them. The neighbors all denounced the police, and they left. The police came back to the Police Station to get uniforms, electrical rods, and batons. They attempted to arrest Pan Zhenfang. The residents who realized the truth about Falun Gong purposely gave the police wrong guidance. Some of resident informed the Falun Gong practitioners that the police had arrived. The police sometimes did not wear uniforms and did not show certificates but prepared to send practitioners to the brainwashing center in secret.

Based on inside information, it is understood that the officials in Hebei Province directed this procedure. The police can arrest anybody who the officials secretly designate. Many arrests took place on October 9 in every village, town, and workplace. The officials wasted an enormous amount of money and manpower. Falun Gong practitioners who were arrested and taken to the brainwashing center suffered brutal persecution. Some practitioners became destitute and homeless and could not return home, in order to avoid being arrested. The policemen waited and in the evening, disturbed practitioners who they had not arrested. Practitioners were suspended from their work and practitioners who worked on farms could not take care of their grain.

Torture in the Masanjia Forced Labor Camp Causes Ms. Lin Li'na to Become Mentally Unstable

In May 2001, I was imprisoned in a detention center for three and a half months. During the detention period, I got acquainted with a fellow practitioner. Her name was Ms. Lin Li'na and she was about 35 years old. No matter what the guards did to her, she kept clarifying the truth about Falun Gong to them. I still have a distant memory of her genial facial expressions.

I heard that she was sent to the Masanjia Labor Camp during the second half of 2002. The guards there initially showered her with false compassion and later tortured her by forcing her legs into a crossed position and tying up her hands and legs with rope. She could not withstand the brutality of their torture for very long and was "transformed" against her will. She experienced feelings of guilt inside in addition to the physical and mental torture from outside. The sudden collapse of her mental state made her unstable, resulting in her release from the camp. Thereafter, her husband divorced her and he secured custody of their children.

The sight of a woman on the street with disheveled hair and a dirty face on the morning of May 26, 2005 made me sad. Her pitiful state prompted a fellow practitioner to take her into her house. A closer look at her made us realize that she was our fellow practitioner Ms. Lin Li'na. I kept holding her arms, asking her questions. Her response was a kind of foolish laughter that brought tears to our eyes. Her dirty body and matted hair revealed that she had not taken a bath for a long time. When we did not talk to her, she talked to herself. Sometimes, she seemed to understand us, and sometimes, she did not. She seemed to be very hungry. My fellow practitioner gave her some food to eat and we took her to the bathroom since she could not take a bath by herself. It took a full hour to clean up her hair. Her mood was always agitated and she always wanted to run out. Our best efforts to stop her could not prevent her from running away and we could not find her again. We felt guilty for not taking better care of Ms. Lin Li'na.

Cases such as Ms. Lin's have happened several times in the Masanjia Labor Camp. This case, we know, while there are many others that we do not.

I sincerely wish that all the practitioners who know about the facts can keep exposing the persecution against the Falun Gong practitioners in the Masanjia Labor Camp. At the same time, I appeal to all the practitioners to provide help for those seriously persecuted practitioners, in order for them to return to the practice of Falun Gong as soon as possible.

Ms. Cao Yue Dies After Being Tortured in Wanjia Forced Labor Camp

Ms. Cao Yue, a practitioner from Acheng City, Heilongjiang Province, was arrested twice. She was tortured by police and hung from a bedpost. After she was released in 2002, she was very weak and often had severe stomachaches. She passed away in September 2005.

Ms. Cao Yue was an employee at the Dilun factory in Acheng City. Because of hepatitis, pharyngitis, rheumatism, hypotension and other ailments, she had difficulty working and doing housework, and often contemplated suicide. After she practiced Falun Gong, her ailments disappeared, and she became healthy in both body and mind.

Jiang Zemin's faction began to arrest Falun Gong practitioners on July 20, 1999. On the eve of the Chinese New Year in 2000, the police arrested Ms. Cao for the first time, because she still practiced Falun Gong. She was taken by officers from the Chengbei Police Station in Acheng City (Director is Wang Weimin) to the Second Detention Center. She was verbally abused and beaten with a broom, a plastic tube, and a leather belt, while cold water was poured over her. She was hung by her handcuffs from a window casing for five days. Thirty-six days later, she was released after paying a bail bond of 5000 yuan.

Ms. Cao was arrested again and sent to the Second Detention Center for doing the Falun Gong exercises in the morning. The police officers said that she disrupted public security and transferred her to the First Detention Center. She went on a hunger strike to protest. Director Sun, the prison doctor, and doctors from the city hospital force-fed her rice soup mixed with wine, and unknown substances. She was detained for over forty days and had to pay a bail bond of 3000 yuan.

Ms. Cao tried to go to Beijing to appeal on behalf of Falun Gong. Many local practitioners were going. Her identification was withheld by the local police and she was intercepted and taken to the Acheng Detention Center on February 19, 2000. Wang Weimin, director of the Chengbei Police Station, extorted 2000 yuan from her husband without providing a receipt.

Ms. Cao was sent to a forced labor camp for two years. She was held in the 12th Division of the Wanjia Forced Labor Camp. During her detention, she was not allowed to read Falun Gong books or practice the exercises, and she was then subjected to being "transformed." Seven female practitioners were sent to a men's prison. They were monitored by the guards from the men's prison. They were hung by handcuffs, tied to a bedpost with a rope, or made to squat on the cement floor. At night, they slept on the floor near an on-duty prison guard. Liu Hui, the leader of the 8th Division, said that the female practitioners would be sent to a cell of male inmates, who could do whatever they desired with them. Ms. Cao was tortured for eight days.

Because she refused to be "transformed," to write a guarantee statement, and to recite the prison regulations, the prison guards hung Ms. Cao and other practitioners in a "small cell" and shocked them with electric batons. Falun Gong practitioners were tortured both physically and mentally. She was tortured at the men's 5th Division. Two directors, Chen Shi and Wang Deng, participated in the persecution.

When her term ended, she was not released. The term was extended to January 18, 2002, because she did not "transform." During her detention in the forced labor camp, her company withheld her pension for the year of 2001. She was paid only 150 yuan in living expenses in 2002. She did not receive her full salary amount until March 2003.

After Ms. Cao Yue was released from the forced labor camp, she was very weak, and often had severe stomachaches. She passed away at the end of September 2005.

A Partial List of Falun Gong Practitioners Incarcerated at the Yongchuan Women's Prison in Chongqing

The Yongchuan Women's prison officials established a special bureau named the "Legal Research Office." There the Communist regime persecutes Falun Gong practitioners, and attempts to deceive them so they will have wrong understandings. The labor camp forces Falun Gong practitioners to undergo daily brainwashing, read books and magazines that slander Falun Gong, and forces Falun Gong practitioners to take unknown drugs. The prison doctor said some Falun Gong practitioners had high blood pressure and forced them to take drugs three times each day until they were released.

Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Xiao Hongxiu, 65 years old, was from Liangping County's Qiqiao Town in Chongqing City. She was tortured to death on July 25, 2004.

Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Liu Fanqing was hung up in handcuffs at the Dadukou District Detention Center. The pain was excruciating and maimed both of her hands, leaving her unable to take care of herself. She was sentenced to nine years of forced labor in spite of a prison law that states "No admission of disabled persons who cannot take care of themselves." They accepted Ms. Liu Fanqin on August 4, 2005. Ms. Liu Fanqin is unable to take care of her own daily basic needs, such as washing her face, combing her hair and eating. She has to depend on help from fellow practitioners.

The day Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Jin Wei entered the prison, she didn't report when she passed the entrance. She was tortured for over one week. The guards deprived her of sleep, day and night, and additionally punished her by having to stand continuously.

Ms. Yang Xiaoli was from the Southwest Normal University. The police meted out punishment by making her clean up the restroom, and squat continuously for two days and two nights without any sleep. Those assigned to "reform" her brutally beat her, threaten and verbally abused her, and then locked her in solitary confinement. The police tied her thumbs to a metal bed for over two hours. Her arms had blue and dark bruises for a long time. Her legs and feet also showed signs of swelling.

Following is a partial list of Falun Gong practitioners who had been or are still detained in the Chongqing Yongchuan Women's Prison:

It is unknown where Mr. Du Kesong is imprisoned.

Ms. Yu Zhenghong went on a hunger strike during the detention period to the point that she became very weak. She was sent to a hospital where it was determined that her life was in danger. On October 10, Ms. Yu was sent home in a car. Mr. Lin Jixiao went on a hunger strike for half a month and his life is now in jeopardy as well.

    2. [Shanghai] Mr. Lin Mingli, Brother of Mr. Lin Shenli, Arrested for the Fifth Time

The Shanghai Putuo District police illegally arrested Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Lin Mingli, younger brother of Canadian Falun Gong practitioner, Mr. Lin Shenli. This is the fifth time that Lin Mingli has been illegally arrested since the persecution started on July 20, 1999.

Lin Mingli, 48 years old, lived on Anyuan Rd., Putuo District, Shanghai. Around 11:30 p.m. on October 9, 2005, the Shanghai Putuo police deceived Lin Mingli into going downstairs, whereupon they illegally arrested him. Now Mr. Lin is imprisoned in the Shanghai Putuo District Detention Center.

The first time Lin Mingli was arrested was in December 1999. He had gone to the Beijing Appeals Bureau to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong, but the police escorted him back to Shanghai and illegally imprisoned him.

One day before the Chinese New Year, the Shanghai police arrested Lin Mingli again and charged him with "sabotaging legal practice." He was illegally imprisoned for a month because of this groundless crime. The police also confiscated Mr. Lin's personal items from his home.

In January 2001, the police forced Lin Mingli to go to the Shanghai Legal School (a brainwashing center) in Qingpu, Shanghai. Mr. Lin refused to cooperate while there, so the police illegally extended his sentence by three months. Lin Mingli was released on April 19. This was the third time that Mr. Lin was illegally imprisoned.

Only four days after being released, Lin Mingli was unlawfully arrested near a pay phone. One year after Mr. Lin disappeared, his wife received written notification that her husband had been "sentenced to a forced labor camp." Lin Mingli was charged with "disturbing social order" and sentenced to two years in the labor camp. He was first imprisoned in the Falun Gong Special Managing Middle Team in the Shanghai City First Forced Labor Camp in Dafeng, Jiangsu Province. His brother Lin Shenli was also tortured at this site and was rescued and brought to Canada in February 2002. Later Lin Mingli was transferred to another middle team for forced labor reform. In March 2002, Mr. Lin and other practitioners were transferred to the Third Male Forced Labor Camp in Qingpu District, Shanghai, where the torture was continued. During this period, Lin Mingli went on a hunger strike to protest his illegal arrest and the maltreatment and torture he experienced in the camp. While he was incarcerated, Mr. Lin was force-fed, which punctured his esophagus. He couldn't eat or drink anything for a long time after that. Mr. Lin was released from the camp on March 26, 2003, with the power of his righteous thoughts.

The agents harassed Mr. Chang's wife to prevent her from releasing information about her husband's arrest. We learned that Chang Xueqian was illegally sentenced to two years and is currently imprisoned in the Masanjia Forced Labor Camp.
