The Facts of the Persecution of Falun Gong -- October 9, 2005

In Daqing Prison, practitioners are deprived of their basic freedom. Prisoners monitor them around the clock. The Daqing Prison prohibits Falun Gong practitioners from leaving the prison building to get fresh air outside. Practitioners Mr. Zhang Zidong, Mr. Li Huifeng, and Mr. Wang Yudong left the prison building, resulting in the prison guards beating them severely. Mr. Zhang was tortured into partial paralysis.
At noon on August 30, 2005, practitioner Mr. Zhang Zidong left the prison building to enjoy the sunny weather. Prison guard Cui Zhengui ordered two prisoners, Li Xin and Gu Shan, to bring Mr. Zhang back to the prison building. Zhang Zidong shouted, "Falun Dafa is good!" After they returned to the prison building, Mr. Zhang wanted to appeal to Zhao Dianwei, the guard on duty. Prisoners Li and Gu tried to stop him and threatened to beat him. After Zhao Dianwei talked to Mr. Zhang, he left the discipline room and told Li and Gu to take Mr. Zhang back to the building. Li and Gu violently dragged and pushed Mr. Zhang into the building and threatened him again, "Don't you dare to go outside again or you will have to suffer the consequences." Because of Li and Gu's cruel actions, Mr. Zhang's lower back was injured. As a result, he can no longer stand and take care of himself. Mr. Zhang has been in the hospital since August 31.
On August 30, at about 4 p.m., practitioners Li Huifeng and Wang Dongyu, who are imprisoned in the First Group, took a walk outside the prison building after dinner. Li Chunzhi, officer and discipline educator, found out and ordered a prisoner to tell them to return to their building. The two practitioners didn't follow the order. Li Chunzhi beat Li Huifeng with a stick. Li Huifeng tried to reason with Li Chunzhi, "This is our fundamental right. How can you deprive me of it?" Officer Li Chunzhi said, "Who allows you freedom? I don't allow you freedom." The officer forced the two practitioners back and locked them in a small isolation cell. Officer Li hung the practitioners up in the air by their wrists with their elbows turned upward. This puts extreme pressure on the shoulder and elbow and can cause intense pain or even a broken shoulder. They hung there for three hours. The two practitioners were tortured in the isolated cell for 15 days.
Officer Li Chunzhi also cruelly beats practitioners. Mr. Qiu Xuezhi and Mr. Sun Jianbin were beaten because they had left the building and gone outside. Officer Li asked them while beating them, "Now do you still want to go out?" Mr. Sun's face was beaten until it was swollen and then finally Li stopped.
Mr. Jin Sheng, a Falun Gong practitioner who was imprisoned in the 7th Prison Ward, asked to take a walk outside the building. Captain Li Fengjiang said, "You people don't have freedom. I will not allow you people to leave the building. You can sue me whenever you want. Don't you practice Truth, Compassion, and Tolerance? You will die if you can't tolerate my orders. The earth will continue to turn even if you all died! Show me what you got. You will all end up like Xu Jishan."
On June 7, 2005, Li Fengjiang, Captain of the 7th Group (in charge of the 7th Prison Ward), and Zhang Dezhi, discipline educator, ordered the prisoners to torture practitioner Xu Jishan. Xu Jishan died at the hands of the prisoners.
On July 23, 2005, practitioner Mr. Yuan Qingjiang died as a result of torture.
Captain Li Fengjinag is the one who killed practitioner Xu Jishan. Since Li was not punished for killing Mr. Xu he has become even more ruthless and increasingly arrogant. Li transferred practitioner Mr. Zhao Yu'an to the 3rd Group because Mr. Zhao knew the details of Xu Jishan's death. In the 3rd Group, Mr. Zhao had even less freedom. He couldn't leave the prison building and was prohibited from having any contact with other practitioners. Recently, Li Fengjiang transferred practitioner Jin Sheng to the 1st Group.

The following is an update on the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners from Fuyu County in Heilongjiang Province. Ms. Zeng Fenglian was tortured so severely that she can no longer walk. Mr. Xu Guoxiang was arrested when looking for work out of town. Without him, his wife and son are living a difficult life. Ms. Lu Guizheng has been persecuted. She and her family's whereabouts have been unknown for nearly three years. Mr. Zhai Yuzhu was illegally arrested and sentenced to five years in prison. His elderly father has been waiting for his return. Ms. Gao Yajuan and Ms. Liu Guirong were both illegally arrested and sentenced to a forced labor camp. They are currently detained in the Qi City Shuanghe Forced Labor Camp where they are being tortured. Due to the information blockade, other detailed information is unknown.
1. Ms. Zeng Fenglian Tortured and Unable to Walk
On November 8, 2003, practitioner Ms. Zeng Fenglian, about 50, was illegally arrested by police officers from the Xinhualu Police Station in Fuyu County. Police officers threatened, beat and tried to terrify her in order to force her to admit her "crimes." When Ms. Zeng was detained at the Fuyu County Forced Labor Camp, police officers Hu Fangwen, Dong Wei, and others beat her and stuffed her under a bed. They kicked her in order to force her to move even further under the bed. Then they forced her to stand for a long time, beating, cursing and threatening her. They stepped on her toes one by one with their heels to force a confession from her. Ms. Zeng became very weak and developed symptoms of serious heart and stomach problems. As a result, she could not eat and only survived on IVs. When her family asked for permission to visit Ms. Zeng, the authorities from the forced labor camp lied to them and said that she was doing well. They reassured her family that what they heard were rumors. In addition, they drove her family away using the excuse that they had caused a disturbance. Meanwhile, Ms. Zeng had been held in the Fuyu Detention Center for over eight months beyond her term.
At the end of August 2004, the Criminal Court from the Fuyu County Communist Party Court brought Ms. Zeng to trial. During this trial, Ms. Zeng was deprived of her right to defend herself. As to the three questionable points concerning her situation brought up by her lawyer, the court ignored all of them. It only allowed the prosecutor, Niu Yanhong, to talk. The court forced a sentence on Ms. Zeng for crimes she did not commit. Ms. Zeng was sentenced to eight years in prison. After that, she was secretly sent to the Heilongjiang Province Women's Prison for further persecution.
In the Women's Prison, the guards deprived Zeng Fenglian of sleep, forced her to stand up for a long time, twisted her legs and verbally her. They also incited the inmates to torture Ms. Zeng and to monitor her all day. Every day they used loudspeakers to broadcast messages that defamed Falun Gong. Zeng Fenglian suffered a great deal physically, and she was also mentally traumatized. When Ms. Zeng's family tried to obtain permission to visit her, a female police officer in charge of granting permission was extremely difficult to deal with.
Ms. Zeng was later transferred to the No. 2 Women's Prison for further persecution. Besides doing physical labor, she was subjected to forced brainwashing. They adopted various methods to try to force Ms. Zeng to renounce her belief.
Now, Ms. Zeng is no longer able to walk by herself. She needs other people's help to walk. In addition, in mid-November 2003, the Xinhualu Police Station in Fuyu County arrested Ms. Zeng's son, Zuo Chunxin, and detained him in the Fuyu Forced Labor Camp for three months. He suffered serious persecution in the camp and his family had to pay about 10,000 yuan to bail him out. He lost his job due to the arrest and is still unemployed.
2. Mr. Xu Guoxiang Arrested; His Wife and Family Having a Difficult Time
On May 23, practitioner Mr. Xu Guoxiang went out of town to look for work. When passing through Haerbin Station and transferring to another train, police officers from the Haerbin Province Railway Police Station found Falun Gong truth-clarification CDs and books in his luggage, so they illegally arrested him. They held him for two months in the Xiangfang Detention Center of the Haerbin Railway Station. Mr. Xu went on a hunger strike to protest his illegal detention, and demanded his unconditional release. He was tortured until he was emaciated, but he still had to perform hard labor.
Mr. Xu had a high fever and lost consciousness a few times, but he was forced to do hard labor after regaining consciousness. The prison doctor diagnosed him with pneumonia. When Mr. Xu's family went to visit him, they asked to bail him out for medical treatment, but were denied. Without notifying his family, the authorities sentenced Xu Guoxiang to two years of forced labor. He was sent to The Third Team in Changlinzi Forced Labor Camp of Haerbin Province for futher persecution.
When he arrived at the Changlinzi Labor Camp, Mr. Xu's wife went to visit him. The guards did not allow her to see him. They asked her to write down words to defame Falun Gong and Teacher. When she refused, she was not allowed to see him. Now Mr. Xu is in the No. 5 Group. Details of his current situation are unknown. His son goes to junior high school and his wife does some work to pay the school tuition and to bring in some financial support. They live a very difficult life.
3. Ms. Lu Guizheng Suffers from Persecution; She and Her Family's Whereabouts Have Been Unknown for Nearly Three Years
In the winter of 2000, police officers from the Erdaowan Police Station detained Ms. Lu Guizheng and twenty other practitioners in a local hotel. Practitioners of both sexes were forced to stay in one room for over seventy days. Ms. Lu's family has been harassed and threatened many times. Her husband was also taken into the police bureau where he was threatened and terrorized.
In mid-December 2003, police officers from the Erdaowan Police Station illegally arrested practitioner Ms. Lu. In the police station, Chen Jianhua, director of the police station, and other police officers from the County Police Department, hit her on the head with rolled up cardboard and magazines. They violently kicked her legs and feet many times. As a result, Ms. Lu's legs and feet developed bruises and blisters, and she had difficulty walking. The next day, Ms. Lu managed to escape with the help of Teacher's benevolence. She was forced to become homeless to avoid recapture and further persecution. Both she and her family's whereabouts are unknown.
4. Mr. Zhai Yuzhu Sentenced to Five Years
At about seven o'clock on December 4, 2003, someone reported practitioner Mr. Zhai Yuzhu to the police when he was handing out truth-clarification materials in the Fuyu County ranch area. He was illegally arrested and put in solitary confinement at the Ranch Police Station. He was stripped and taken outside in freezing weather. He was hit with a shovel handle until the handle broke. Mr. Zhai was then transferred secretly to the Qi City Sijiazi Detention Center (Qi City Agricultural Exploitation Bureau). Two months later, without notifying him and his family, and without following any legal procedure, Zhai Yuzhu was sentenced to five years in prison and was taken to the Qi City Tailai Prison.
Mr. Zhai is still in prison and is being tortured. His elderly father has been deaf for many years and has no income. He depends on Mr. Zhai's married sister to provide him with financial support. The old man is looking forward to his son's return. Every time he runs into someone, he says, "Yuzhu will be back in a few days."
5. Update on Mr. Fan Xingzhi's Persecution
On July 22, 1999, police officers from the Fuyu County Erdaowan Township Police Station broke into practitioner Mr. Fan Xingzhi's home and confiscated seventeen tapes containing lectures, three exercises videotapes and one photo of Master Li. In 2000, Erdaowan Township police officers forced Mr. Fan to attend brainwashing sessions. The brainwashing sessions were held in the police station and also in an animal hospital. During that period of time, they forced practitioners to do a party propaganda dance that is popular in northern China.
In the summer of 2000, Zhang Xishuang, director of Erdaowan Township Police Station, and Lan Peicai, police officer from the Fuyu County 610 Office broke into Fan Lanzhi's home using the excuse that someone had reported him. They confiscated five cassettes (including lectures and exercises). The following winter, Chen Jianhua, director of the Erdaowan Police Station who recently came on board, and policeman Wang Hongjiu, arrested Mr. Fan again, using the same excuse. They detained him at the Township Police Station. In one day, they ransacked his home four times, and seriously damaged his house.
In April 2001, people from Nahe City Police Bureau, together with police officers from the Erdaowan Township Police Station, took Mr. Fan to the Nahe City Police Station for interrogation. Fu Yubin, a divisional manager, and three other people interrogated him and physically abused him in an attempt to force a confession. They forced Mr. Fan to sit on a tiger bench for three days. Meanwhile, he was shocked with electric batons on the head, and face. Then he was slapped on the face with a rolled-up magazine, and brutally kicked. Later, he was held in the Nahe Forced Labor Camp. Mr. Fan was released fifteen days later, after his family paid a fine of 2,000 "yuan".
6. Update on Other Practitioners Who Have Been Persecuted
The Erdaowan Police Station has fined Fuyu County practitioner Ms. Sun Suqin many times. The highest amount was 5,000 yuan. They also held her son-in-law at the Fuyu Detention Center for one year. The Erdaowan Police Station fined practitioners Shao Jinrong, Wu Yaorong, and Meng Zhaoshan. Their fines ranged from 500 to 2,000 yuan.
After someone reported practitioners Ms. Gao Yajuan, Ms. Liu Guirong and Ms. Chen Yanhua from Xinxin Village, Erdaowan Township, Fuyu County because they clarified the truth to other villagers, police officers from the Erdaowan Police Station ransacked Ms. Gao's home. They found Falun Gong truth-clarification CDs and other materials, so they took Ms. Gao away. After that, they went to the homes of Ms. Liu and Ms. Chen, and found Falun Gong books and truth-clarification materials. They took the three of them together to the Erdaowan Police Station for interrogation. Then they sent them to the Police Team of the Fuyu County Police Station for further interrogation.
During their detention, Ms. Gao and Ms. Liu were forced to sit on the iron chair, and Ms. Chen was slapped six or seven times. Police officers stuck burning cigarette butts into Ms. Liu's nose. They also twisted an ashtray under her armpit. Ms. Chen was fined 6,000 yuan before she was released. Ms. Gao was sentenced to two years in a forced labor camp, and Ms. Liu was sentenced to one year of forced labor. She is detained at the Qi City Shuanghe Forced Labor Camp.
The police in Yanshan County, Hebei Province closely follow the persecution policies against Falun Gong initiated by former leader Jiang Zemin and his regime. They illegally search Falun Gong practitioners' homes, brutally beat them, and subject them to all manner of painful tortures including burning practitioners with cigarettes, nailing bamboo spikes into practitioners' fingernails, and beating them with electric batons. In the authorities' efforts to try and "reform" Falun Gong practitioners, practitioners are severely tortured both physically and mentally. Some have been forced to leave home to avoid persecution.
1. Police Abuse: Carrying out the Evil Party's Policies
On January 1, 2002, Yanshan County police searched Falun Gong practitioner Liu Huanjie's home for no reason. They stole many of Mr. Liu's possessions, including his sewing machine, television, leather suitcase, watch, and other valuable items. On September 29, 2002, a plain-clothed policeman entered Liu Huanjie's yard by climbing over the wall. Without a warrant, he arrested Liu Huanjie along with his entire family, which included a child, and took them to Yanshan Police Station. The police inflicted cruel tortures on them for four days and three nights. Seven days later, more than 10 policemen, including Team Leader Wang Yixin, Head of the Armed Team Liu Weidong from Cangzhou City National Security Section, and Team Head Wang Wenping from Yanshan County, tied Mr. Liu onto an iron chair to "stew the eagle." When Liu Huanjie became sleepy, they poured cold water on him and whipped his face with wet towels. Wang Yixin used keys to scratch Mr. Liu's ribs and claimed that they would remove his clothes and injure his testicles to make him suffer further. Nonetheless, the tortures could not make Liu Huanjie change his mind about Falun Gong.
Police officers Wang Yixin, Liu Weidong and Wang Wenping burned female Falun Gong practitioner Liu Shuzhen's body with cigarettes in 20 places. They covered her head with a metal bucket and struck the bucket from the outside. Their tortures could not "transform" Mr. Liu, so they tried nailing bamboo spikes into her fingernails. Practitioner Li Yuxia also suffered the bamboo spike torture. Blood spurt out from their fingernails, but the practitioners refused to be transformed. The two practitioners were brutally beaten and their bodies were covered with bruises. When they returned home after their release, one of their relatives was so traumatized that he suffered a relapse of a prior mental illness.
2. Torturing to Obtain Lies
Liu Huanjie's brother, Liu Huanjun, was brutally tortured at the Yansha Detention Center. He never gave up his belief in Falun Gong and was sentenced to 4 years in prison. He was sent to Baoding Prison and was continuously persecuted there.
Liu Huanjie's sister-in-law, Li Xiuling, was illegally detained at the Gantong Town Police sub-station in Yanshan County. The police beat her brutally, removed her jacket and handcuffed her outside for twenty-four hours in minus 10 degree Celsius temperature [14 0F]. In order to try to force practitioners to "transform," they arrested all the practitioners in town and took them to the detention center to torture them. They locked everybody in a cold and dark garage, beat them with electric batons and bench legs, tortured them with pinchers, and poked their feet with iron sticks to force practitioners to lie and say, "We won't practice any more." This is the truth about the government's so-called "transformation" success.
3. Escaping from the Brainwashing Center and Not Being Able to Return Home
The brainwashing center of Yanshan County was established in July of 2001. It is located at Cao Village, west of the town. Practitioner Ms. Li Xiuling was with the first group that was illegally detained. The very first day, she was brutally beaten by the squad leader, Zhang Wenzhi. He threw her into the ditch by the road. Falun Gong practitioners were forced to watch videos attacking Falun Gong. If they didn't listen carefully, they would be punished and forced to stand under the hot sun. If one did not show remorse for not listening, one would be tortured non-stop. The brainwashing center also forced Falun Gong practitioners' employers to submit 50 yuan each day for room and board. This way, the brainwashing center not only increased their income, but also stirred up hatred and conflict for practitioners from their employers. In order to persecute practitioners, the authorities thought up many tricks. One day Li Xiuling finally escaped, but she was unable to return home since the evil government officials were looking for her to arrest her again.
There was a female practitioner who was arrested because she had appealed for justice for Falun Gong. She was released after her family submitted 15,000 "yuan". The government officials found another chance to arrest her. She then went on a hunger strike to protest. After two weeks, this practitioner was persecuted until she nearly died, but the authorities still didn't want to release her. After two months on a hunger strike, the practitioner was finally released with the help of her employer. After that, government officials still tried to arrest her. Finally, she was forced to leave home to avoid further persecution.
4. Acting Madly to Arrest People and Collect Illegal Fines
Since January 2001 many local police sub-stations in Yanshan County have tried to arrest people whenever there was a holiday or whenever a "sensitive date" approached. If a person had so much as ever read a Falun Gong book, they would become a target whether they were a practitioner or not. And they wouldn't be released until the police received money from them.
Liu Yingjie's sister and brother-in-law were arrested on May 12 because May 13 is Teacher's birthday. When they were arrested, two Falun Gong books were found. Because they refused to be "transformed," the two practitioners were detained at the Yanshan Detention Center for four months. Only after paying a fine of 1,000 "yuan" were they finally released. Because these practitioners were the main source of income at home and they were illegally detained, it caused financial hardship for their families.
Liu Huanjie's older sister refused to be "transformed" in the brainwashing class. After two months, she was the only one who had not compromised her belief under pressure. The brainwashing center asked her family to pay some fines, but the family didn't have the money. The brainwashing center again asked her relatives for money, but they didn't comply. At last, people from the brainwashing center said, "Nobody wants this old lady. Don't arrest people like this from now on."
5. Interrogation and Torture at the Brainwashing Center
When Yanshan County started their 4th session of brainwashing classes, Falun Gong practitioners realized the lies and evilness more clearly. At that time, the evil persecution also intensified.
One female practitioner was handcuffed to a bed for over one month. Every day, she was forced to listen to other practitioners being beaten, sounds from the various instruments of torture, the yelling and shouting by the evil government officials, and the screaming of practitioners being tortured.
6. Using Psychotropic Drugs
There was an elderly female practitioner who firmly believed in Falun Gong. She was arrested illegally three times. The evil government officials used all of their tricks on her yet they were unable to "transform" her. One afternoon, they sent her to stand out in the hot sun. All of a sudden, she fell straight to the ground and lost consciousness. They immediately carried her inside. When they saw that she was still unconscious, they whispered, "Was it because of the psychotropic drugs?" The practitioner heard them say this very clearly. After that she never drank the water provided by the government officials. She also paid special attention to her food.
At the Fenglei Air Force Equipment Manufacturing Factory in Anshun City, Guizhou Province, where I work, the authorities have closely followed former president Jiang Zemin's regime to persecute Falun Gong practitioners. From 2001 to 2004, six practitioners from our factory were arrested because they told the facts about Falun Gong and two died from illnesses that arose as a result of a long and severe persecution.
In the past several years, about ten practitioners from my work unit have come forward to distribute truth clarification materials and to save sentient beings.
When I wrote a letter to my relatives who lived in another area about Falun Gong, the police located me and searched my home. They illegally detained me for sixteen days. Because I refused to tell them where I had gotten the truth clarification materials and refused to write the three statements they demanded from me, they sent me to the Anshun City Detention Center for another sixteen days. Later, they released me after receiving 3,000 yuan bail money from my family. My employer continued to monitor, follow and harass me thereafter. In March 2003, my employer requested that I attend a provincial brainwashing class. I was told that I would be accompanied by a cadre from my factory and that I needed to pay a fee of 3,000 yuan. My employer clearly told me that I could not go back to work unless I was "transformed." So I had to leave my home to avoid further persecution.
Once, four practitioners from my workplace were reported and subsequently arrested while distributing truth clarification materials. Three of them were illegally detained in the detention centers between two to four and a half months. They all refused to disclose the source of our materials.
In 2004, a young female Falun Gong practitioner clarified the truth and exposed the persecution to those who were "transforming" her, but she was directly sent to the Guizhou Women's Forced Labor Camp for a three-year term by the police from the factory. She had to leave behind her 2-year-old child.
In March 2004, a practitioner who was responsible for obtaining truth clarification materials was reported to the police. They confiscated all of his Falun Gong books, CDs and materials and illegally detained him in the detention center for four months. Only after his family paid 3,000 yuan did they release him. Shortly after his release, he wrote a letter to advise his fellow employees not to believe the lies about Falun Gong, but he was reported and sent to the detention center again for over one month. On December 1, 2004, four to five police officers broke into his home and tried to force him to sign the three statements, but he refused. Then, several police officers searched his home illegally, arrested him and took him to the detention center, and sentenced him to three years of forced labor in the Zhongba Forced Labor Camp in Guizhou Province. They withheld all of his salary as well. Since his wife does not work, the whole family has to live on his meager pension.
The Fenglei Air Force Equipment Manufacturing Factory was very harsh on Falun Gong practitioners financially. A detained practitioner was only given 230 yuan to live on. If the practitioner refused to write the three statements, his or her salary would be withheld completely. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Committee, labor union, police department, organization department, discipline inspection commission, neighborhood committee and retiree office of the factory often sent people to harass Falun Gong practitioners, monitored them around the clock and patrolled the site in shifts. They claimed that they would arrest Falun Gong practitioner as soon as they spotted them. They also awarded the perpetrators with more than 500 yuan.
