  • Tears and Blood of Dalian: The Persecution of Falun Gong Practitioner Ms. Sun Yan, Part 1

Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Sun Yan from Dalian City, 37 years old, lived at No. 301, Gate No. 1, Building 8, North Jinyunyuan, Jinxiu District, Dalian City, Liaoning Province. Her home phone number is 86-411-86824962, and her zip code is 116000. She used to be a teacher at the Dalian Petrochemical Corporation Kindergarten. She benefited physically and mentally from practicing Falun Gong and conducted herself according to Truth-Compassion-Forbearance. More than once she was awarded the titles "Model Young Worker" and "Advanced Worker." She was also recognized with professional awards in youth education.

    Close-up of Sun Yan

Since July 20, 1999, Sun Yan has been and still is being brutally persecuted by the authorities. Following is her story.

Before the persecution of Falun Gong began, Ms. Sun Yan was an employee of the Dalian Petrochemical Corporation, the former No. 7 Petroleum Factory. After 1999, the Dalian Petrochemical Corporation closely adhered to Jiang's orders to persecute Falun Gong. Corporate leaders announced the persecution of the corporation's Falun Gong employees in the Dalian Daily.

<>In September 1999, Ms. Sun Yan was sent to a brainwashing class the company sponsored. She was held for about one month because she persisted in her belief. Between September and October 1999, the Dalian City 610 Office held a brainwashing class at the Dalian City Drug Rehabilitation Center. Li Tingxu, head of the Security Division of the Dalian Petrochemical Corporation, was the first official to send four practitioners to the Dalian City Drug Rehabilitation Center. The four practitioners were Sun Yan, Han Li, a nurse at the company hospital, Yuan Lianfeng, a company employee, and one other person. Ms. Sun escaped from the Rehab Center later that same day.

In March 2000, Ms. Sun set off for Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong and was illegally arrested by police at the Dalian Train Station. She was sent back to the Dalian City Drug Rehabilitation Center. Several days later, officials from the Dalian Petrochemical Corporation bailed her out. Controlled by Jiang's regime, the company could not accept Ms. Sun's belief in Truth-Compassion-Forbearance, even though the company had awarded her the title "Model Young Worker" and she had contributed positively to her work unit. The company unreasonably fired her in March 2000 due to pressure and financial incentives. Ms. Sun lost her source of income.

In April 2000, officers from the Malan Police Station in Dalian City arrested Sun Yan again and sent her to the Dalian City Drug Rehabilitation Center because her practitioner husband, Lu Kaili, went to Beijing to appeal. Ms. Sun held a hunger strike during the one-month detention and was then unconditionally released. Her husband Lu Kaili was sent to the Masanjia Forced Labor Camp in Shenyang City.

After Ms. Sun left the Rehab Center, officials from the Dalian City Police Department exhausted all their tactics trying to arrest her.

In April 2001, officer Chen Xin and Lin Song from Division One of the Dalian City Police Department, now the Security Division, set a trap by telling Ms. Sun to go to the Division to discuss the release of her husband, Lu Kaili. When she arrived, they detained her and sent her to the Yaojia Detention Center in Dalian City. Ms. Sun held a hunger strike to protest the illegal detention, and the guards ordered inmates to hit her with coke bottles filled with water. They handcuffed and shackled her and connected the handcuffs and shackles with a short chain. Then they affixed the chain to a metal ring on a bed. Ms. Sun was forced to stay in a curled fetal position all day long. By the end of May, after a one-month hunger strike, Sun Yan was on the brink of death. The police and guards told Ms. Sun's family to bail her out and wait for interrogation. Sun Yan's father took her home. He was devastated when he saw that his daughter was only skin and bones.

Authorities from the No. One Division of the Dalian City Police Department secretly sentenced Ms. Sun to three years of forced labor without her knowledge. Ms. Sun gradually recovered, and the police wanted to send her to a labor camp.

Between June and July 2001, officers from Division One went to the home of Sun Yan's mother many times in an attempt to take Ms. Sun away. They pounded on the door at night. At first Sun Yan's father opened the door. They demanded to know her whereabouts and then they beat her parents. In the ensuing raids, Sun Yan's father refused to open the door, and the police broke in. Ms. Sun chose to become homeless to avoid further persecution.

On October 11, 2001, Sun Yan's husband, Lu Kaili, returned home from the Masanjia Forced Labor Camp. Eleven days later, on October 22, officer Xing from the Taoyuan Police Station and officers from the Zhongshan Police Department and the Dalian City Police Department arrested six people, including Mr. Lu Kaili and Ms. Sun Yan. They sent Ms. Sun to the Yaojia Detention Center and then transferred her to Dalian City Forced Labor Camp in November 2001.

Ms. Sun Yan persisted in following Truth-Compassion-Forbearance. She was savagely tortured during the time she was detained at Dalian Forced Labor Camp and the Longshan Forced Labor Camp.

Intensified Persecution of Falun Gong Practitioners at Jinzhou City Forced Labor Camp

Jinzhou City Forced Labor Camp recently began a new round of brainwashing against the most steadfast Falun Gong practitioners. The practitioners were forced to watch videos, including a video of Wang Zhigang from Changchun, slandering Falun Gong and defaming Teacher. At the same time, practitioners were forced to make products such as wreaths for export. They were also forced to practice Taichi, a different school of practice from Falun Gong. If they refused, they would be tortured by the police.

    1. Qi Mingli from Jilin City persecuted until he could no longer walk

A relative recently went to visit Qi Mingli, but was not allowed to see him. This relative, from Jinzhou City, tried to clarify the truth of Falun Gong to the police at the labor camp. Li Fenglin, who is in charge of persecuting Falun Gong, said, "If you keep talking, I will put you in the labor camp too." After asking the police on several occasions to see Mingli, his family members from Jilin were finally able to see him. They saw that Qi Mingli's legs were paralyzed, as he walked only with heavy support from others. This is the real reason why the forced labor camp doesn't want people to visit him. They are afraid of their crimes being exposed.

    2. Li Hongcheng forced to leave home

On June 23, 2005, Falun Gong practitioner Li Hongcheng was taken away by Xinglong Police Station and then sent directly to a labor camp. He was released from the labor camp after several days of hunger strike. At 10 o'clock on September 26, three guards from the labor camp drove a police vehicle to his home. They harassed him and claimed, "If Li Hongcheng does not show the doctor's medical diagnosis to the labor camp right now, he will be taken to the labor camp again."

Li Hongcheng's wife pleaded with them. Li Hongchen was working in the backyard at the time. Upon overhearing this conversation, he left home. Li Hongcheng was forced to become homeless again.

    3. Miao Jianguo detained at Jinzhou City Labor Camp beyond his term; labor camp refuses to grant him bail

On July 22, 2005, Falun Gong practitioner Miao Jianguo finished his term at the Jinzhou City Labor Camp, but the labor camp refused to release him. Miao Jianguo's 80 year-old parents have talked to the labor camp about his release. However, the labor camp said that they wanted Miao Jianguo to stay longer to compensate for the time he spent on bail for medical reasons. The labor camp had forced Miao Jianguo to pay $7000 yuan for bail, money which he had to borrow from friends and relatives. The labor camp purposely avoided mentioning anything about the money. When Miao Jianguo's parents asked for the money back, the authorities refused to comment.

The Inside Story of the Persecution of Falun Gong Practitioners in Jilin Prison

Jilin Prison is located at 100 Junmin Road, Jilin City, Jilin Province. Since July 20, 1999, when the persecution of Falun Gong began, Jilin Prison has closely followed Jiang's policy of genocide againstagainst Falun Gong practitioners.

Typical means used to persecute Falun Gong practitioners include: severe group supervision, solitary confinement, tying practitioners on a stretching bed and pulling their arms and legs (described in more details below), inciting the inmates to beat practitioners, scratching practitioner's reproductive organs, keeping twenty four hour watch on practitioners and force-feeding practitioners. An order from the Jilin Prison is to make them suffer without caring whether they are dying and to count death from force-feeding as a natural death. They do not allow practitioners to see or correspond with their families, they do not allow practitioners to meet jail inspectors and they hold their appeal documents. In order to cover up their acts for fearing of exposure, Jilin Prison also imprisons steadfast Falun Gong practitioners in solitary confinement for long periods and cruelly tortures them there.

Falun Gong practitioners who are known to have been persecuted to death in Jilin Prison include Liu Chengjun, Zhang Jianhua, Cui Weidong, Wei Xiushan, and He Yuanhui.

The following are typical torture methods:

    1. Brainwashing

Jilin Prison uses the inmates to set up brainwashing sessions in different areas of the jail. They use inmates to persecute Falun Gong practitioners, to force Falun Gong practitioners to write the so-called Three Statements or Five Statements, and to punish Falun Gong practitioners physically by forcing them to sit on a wooden board. If anything does not please them, they curse and beat the practitioners at will. At the same time, three or four inmates beat a single Falun Gong practitioner. They broke Shi Guohong's rib by kicking him and they beat his bottom bloody with a wooden board. Liu Chengjun was tortured to death. Many Falun Gong practitioners' bodies are covered with black bruises. They knocked out Cao Zhonghua's front teeth and forced him to sit on a wooden board for fifteen to sixteen hours every day. Some practitioners are even denied sleep. Zheng Weidong was denied sleep for nine days and was not allowed to talk or meet with anybody. He was not allowed to walk around and was followed to the restroom. Some jail areas are equipped with stretching beds.

    2. Solitary confinement

In October 2003, in order to further persecute Falun Gong practitioners, Jilin Prison set up a so-called psychological "therapy" center. It consists over 10 small dark rooms for solitary confinement. Each room has 4 iron handcuffs bolted to the ground used to shackle the practitioner. Each room is also equipped with a stretching bed, also known as a fixing bed, used as a torture device. The practitioner is fixed, or motionless on the bed with arms and legs stretched and cuffed. Others can then torture him at will, kicking him, beating him, stepping on him, burning him with a bottle filled of boiling water, piercing him with needles and not letting him sleep. One way to increase the pain is, with the abdomen upwards, to add quilts, water bottles, wooden boards, etc. between his back and the bed. Then the practitioner's arms and legs are stretched even tighter and the wrists and ankles are gradually torn open. The practitioner can barely breathe, his face as pale as a sheet. This torture can make people die at once. Some Falun Gong practitioners were fixed in the bed for from ten days to more than two months. Their bodies were devastated. Their muscles atrophied and their limbs lost their strength. When they walk, they need the support of a wall. They are emaciated. The cold of winter then injures their hands and feet even more.

The jail also set up a "psychological" room. This is where Li Yongsheng and Wang Yanqing, jail guards from the education department, directly persecute Falun Gong practitioners. They ask Falun Gong practitioners to go there for a conversation. The practitioners who do not give in are sent to severely supervising groups for torture. In severely supervising groups, inmates supervise and often beat good people. Torture, abuse and insults are everyday activities.

In April 2004, jail guards used the Psychological Therapy Center to persecute steadfast Falun Gong practitioners together for the second time for over a month.

    3. Severely supervised group

The severely supervised group in Jilin Prison is a jail inside the jail. Falun Gong practitioners are forced to sit on a wooden board from 5:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., during which they must keep their waist, back and neck straight and are not allowed to move. If they move a bit they are beaten. Someone coughed and was beaten and kicked for moving.

Every day, they can only move three or four times, and each time they are only given less than five minutes. Even using the restroom has a time limit. Although three meals are provided each day, each meal is only a pickle and a piece of corn bread. The shortest period of being imprisoned here is over one month and the longest is over ten months. Being imprisoned here for three or four months is common. Because of sitting without moving, some practitioner's bottoms broke down and started to fester. The sitting has caused lung disease and pleurisy for some people. Some people were reduced to skin and bones and swayed when they walked. If somebody gets sick during the period of severe supervision, he will not be released unless he is on the verge of death.

The practitioners are not allowed to use the restroom at night. It is said that the government makes this rule and practitioners are advised to pass urine or move their bowels in bed.

The severely supervised group is equipped with a stretching bed. Whoever doesn't follow orders or doesn't sit straight is dragged to the stretching bed. The flesh of most practitioner's wrists has been torn open and the backs of their hands have swelled.

The following are the situations of some Falun Gong practitioners who were tortured in Jilin Prison:

He Yuanhui was imprisoned in August 2003. He Yuanhui's health grew worse day after day after being tortured in a brainwashing center. In 2005, He Yuanhui was tortured to death.

Mr. Liu Chengjun was imprisoned in 2002 and was beaten and tortured in a brainwashing center. In October 2003, he went on a hunger strike to protest the persecution. After some time, Mr. Liu was sent to an outside hospital and was tortured there for over two months. He was brought back to the jail hospital in December of 2004 where he was force-fed. Later he was taken to the Chinese-Japanese Friendship Hospital for medical rescue, but he did not survive. Mr. Liu Chengjun was tortured to death.

In February 2003, Cui Weidong was brought to a severely supervised group for torture because of writing a solemn statement rejecting a previous statement made under duress in which he renounced Falun Gong. Cui was later brought to the hospital because of his poor health. In May 2004, Cui died as a result the torture.

In 2002, Yang Guang was sentenced to fifteen years. Yang had been tortured more than ten times in the First Department of Public Security Bureau in Changchun City, Jilin Province. As a result, his legs were disabled, so he had to be carried into the Jilin Prison. In the Jilin Prison, Yang's torture included beatings, solitary confinement, being persecuted in a severely supervised group, a stretching bed, and being held alone and isolated from the outside for a long period. Yang was later brought to the Naked District in the prison where Yang's lower body was naked for years. In August of 2005, the Jilin Prison increased Yang's torture. Currently Yang is paralyzed and is suffering from pleurisy, kidney failure and the exhaustion of all organs. Yang may die at any moment. The Jilin Prison lied to the outside world claiming that Yang's time for being released on bail for medical treatment had not yet come. In spite of his condition, they have refused to release him.

Wang Fengcai was sent to the "Closely Monitored Center" in 2003 because of his refusal to write "the Four Statements of Renunciation" in prison. In the Center, he was placed in a bed with his four limbs stretched out and tied to the four corners of an icy-cold metal bed for more than 10 days. In October 2003 he was sent to the so-called "Correction Center" to be persecuted for over 20 days because of his belief in Falun Gong. The inmates tortured him by pouring a kettle full of boiling water on him. He still has the burn marks on his abdomen. He was sent to the "Correction Center" again in April 2003 because he hand copied Teacher's articles. He was tortured there for more than 20 days and then was sent to the "Closely Monitored Center" and kept there for another month. In May 2005 he was sent to the "Closely Monitored Center" again because he exposed the persecution. His health deteriorated dramatically and he was not able to eat. He was sent back to the prison again. The prison guard claimed that he was on a hunger strike and sent him to the hospital to be persecuted there. Two days later he was in critical condition, so on July 13, he was sent to the Jilin Central Hospital. His whereabouts are unknown.

Wang Qibo was detained for over two months because of clarifying the facts. During his detention he was closely monitored and severely tortured.

Yun Qingbin was sent to the "Closely Monitored Center" on April 15, 2005, for his refusal to be "reformed." During his three-month stay, the inmates played all sorts of tricks on him and tortured him. He is in poor health and not able to look after himself at present.

Zhang Hongwei was sent to the prison and then transferred to the "Closely Monitored Center" in 2002. He was locked in a small cell for nearly two years. In February 2004 the inmate who was monitoring him swore at and beat him. He defended himself. Wan Zhiqing, the prison guard, used this as an excuse and put him in the "Closely Monitored Center" again. He was persecuted for more than two months there and was sent back to the prison later on because of his poor health. At the moment he can barely walk..

In September 2004, Sun Qian was locked in a small cell for seven or eight days and then was transferred to the "Closely Monitored Center" for over two months. In December 2004 he was locked in a small cell again because they learned he was copying Teacher's articles. He was transferred to the "Closely Monitored Center" for another three months. In 2005 he was put in the small cell once again because they learned he passed around Teacher's articles. He is still there today.

The Police Arrest Panjin Practitioner Jiang Xiulan and Her Non-Practitioner Husband

Ms. Jiang Xiulan is a Falun Gong practitioner in the Xinli District, Dawa County, Panjin City, Liaoning Province. She left home three years ago to avoid further persecution. On July 12, 2005, the Xinli Police Substation in Dawa County illegally arrested her. On the same day, the police returned to Ms. Jiang's home to arrest her husband, Mr. Liu Yuqi, who did not practice Falun Gong. The police even slapped Ms. Jiang's 14-year-old daughter on the face twice. Now Ms. Jiang and her husband are being held in the Dawa County Detention Center.

Ms. Jiang left home three years ago to avoid being arrested and persecuted. On the morning of July 12, 2005, the Xinli Police Subdivision of Dawa County located her and arrested her on the street. Liu Huanzhang, the police chief of the subdivision, and officer Bian Kai searched Ms. Jiang's residence and confiscated 980 yuan and other personal property, including several Falun Gong books. They interrogated Ms. Jiang as to her whereabouts for the past three years. Since Ms. Jiang refused to answer any of their questions, Liu and Bian beat her with a rubber pipe. The beating left bruises all over her body. As a result, Ms. Jiang could hardly sit or lie down.

Ms. Jiang went on a hunger strike to protest the persecution. Eight days later, the police forcibly injected her with three shots. They also administered two bottles of unknown drugs through an IV. On the ninth day, Liu Huanzhang, Bian Kai, and others force-fed her in the Xinli Clinic. They used a plastic square to pry open her mouth. This torture lasted for a whole day.

After they arrested Ms. Jiang, Liu sent the police to search her house and confiscate her personal property. They also took some Falun Gong books that they found there. Ms. Jiang's thirteen-year-old daughter was home. They slapped her face twice. Then they came back at noon and arrested Ms. Jiang's husband, Liu Yuqu. Her husband and her daughter are not practitioners.

One of Ms. Jiang's relatives asked Liu, "Why do you persecute Falun Gong practitioners? Ms. Jiang needs to take care of her young daughter." Liu retorted, "What did she do in the three years when she was away from home? She'll simply follow Liu Dejun's path (a practitioner who was persecuted to death) if she continues her hunger strike." This relative then asked, "Her husband is not a practitioner. Why did you arrest him?" Liu replied maliciously, "He is her accomplice. Your appeal is useless. Their young daughter is tough!"

The police issued a receipt for the money they confiscated from Ms. Jiang. During her hunger strike, Ms. Jiang managed to pass the receipt to another practitioner, and asked her to take it out of the detention center. At 8 a.m. on July 22, a man approached that practitioner and claimed he was also a practitioner, and he would give the receipt to Jiang's family. He then took the receipt and disappeared.

Ms. Jiang's non-practitioner relatives have also suffered from the persecution. Her husband has been arrested several times. After Ms. Jiang left her home in 2002, Liu detained her husband, sister, sister-in-law, and her eldest daughter who was just 15 years old at that time.

Practitioners' Family Members Expose the Underhanded Dealings of a Detention Center Shop in Harbin

The Seventh Division of the Harbin Police Department is a detention center. No detainee's family members are allowed to visit, including the family members of Falun Gong practitioners illegally detained there, nor are their families permitted to send them things from home.

Family members came to the shop to learn news about the practitioners being held there. They paid the clerks for their items and got a receipt. Then they asked the shop clerks to send the items to the practitioners. When the practitioners got the items, they would sign the receipts. When the receipts with practitioners' signatures were brought back, the family members sometimes were lucky enough to see several extra words. Many times, however, the extra words were cut out.

The shop's prices are extremely high. Apples are 3.5 yuan per Jin (1.1 pound) and the small watermelons are 6 yuan each. A toothbrush set is 15 yuan and clothes are very expensive. A box of instant noodles costs 20 yuan at a regular store but is marked 60 yuan there. Some items are 50% more expensive than regular prices and some are twice as much as the regular price.

Some family members asked the clerks if their family members were still detained here. The clerks told them, "Yes," so the families bought several things and asked the clerks to send them in. But when the clerks came back, they did not give the family members any receipts. When the family asked for the receipts, the clerks said that the practitioners had been transferred. However, when the family members asked them to return the things they had bought, the clerks were unwilling to do so. On the day I visited, there were two cases like this. The clerks locked the door and went for lunch. When the door was reopened for the afternoon, the two families started to argue with the clerks. In another case the family got most of their purchased items back, but some items--the toothbrush set and the detergent--were missing. They confronted the clerks, who then brought out the missing items and said that they had forgotten them. Did they really forget? Practitioners had often told their families that they did not have these daily necessities. Their family members thought it could have been the large number of cellmates, which resulted in a shortage of these items. Actually, the clerks did not deliver to the practitioners the items that their family members had purchased. This was the situation in the Spring of 2003.

Most of the clerks working at the shop are family members of the police officers in the detention center. Their families have good incomes, but still they embezzle, extort, and deceive practitioners.

Remembering Fellow Practitioners Ms. Shi Shengying and Ms. Ren Shujie

On August 25, 2005, Ms. Shi Shengying was tortured to death in the Shenyang Women's Prison in Liaoning Province. On September 4, 2005, I again heard the news of Ms. Ren Shujie's death as a result of torture. I recalled my short acquaintance with them. I now dedicate this article to these two practitioners, Shi Shengying and Ren Shujie.

    A T-shirt

One afternoon in 2003 at the slave-like wax factory of Longshan Forced Labor Camp, the family of Lu Changliang, Ms. Shi Shengying's daughter, sent some clothes for her. She had not seen her family for a long time but she was still not allowed to see them. Among the clothes, there was a t-shirt for Ms. Ren Shujie in the Second Division. The instructor gave it to her. Determined practitioners like Ms. Ren at Longshan Forced Labor Camp are not allowed to see their families. Although we really wanted to get to know Ren Shujie, we did not have a chance due to the restricted environment.

Later, the two divisions were working at the same forced labor site. One day an instructor assigned to the Second Division told me that the director had assigned her to monitor Ms. Ren Shujie. I said that I really wanted to know her and hoped that she could wear the t-shirt the following morning so that I would recognize her.

The next morning on the exercise yard, I saw Ren Shujie when the Second Division came back from the dining hall. It was a very hot day. Many practitioners wore yellow t-shirts. Ms. Ren Shujie was wearing the t-shirt that Lu Changjing's family had sent. She was tall, fair, and had rosy skin. She radiated a righteous field around her. Our eyes met and conveyed more than what many words could.

On the day I was transferred from Longshan Forced Labor Camp, when I was waiting for the 610 Office personnel dealing with the process at the central station, Ren Shujie and her "instructor" stood in front of the window to see me off. With tears in her eyes, the "instructor" shouted my name and waved goodbye to me. Over the more than two years in Longshan, it had been always me who saw others off. This time it was I who was leaving, and I truly had mixed feelings.

At the Zhangshi Forced Labor Camp

After I was transferred from the Longshan Forced Labor Camp to the Zhangshi Forced Labor Camp, I met two older practitioners, Ms. Shi Shengying and her daughter Lu Qingzhai. Ms. Shi Shengying was frequently tortured until she fainted.

After Lu Changjing came back, I wanted to visit her and her mother, Ms. Shi, but due to various reasons, I could not make it. It is my regret that I can no longer see Shi Shengying.
