The Canadian media provided widespread coverage of last weekend's three-day vigil at Chinese Embassies and Consulates around the world. Practitioners realize that even though the persecution of Falun Gong is taking place in far away China, the Canadian media and people are still concerned about it. Because peoples' positions toward Dafa and the persecution have a great impact on their futures, practitioners have benevolently clarified the truth to all Canadians; thus, support for Falun Gong and opposition to the persecution by Jiang's regime continues to grow.
The response from local communities increased steadily throughout the event, as people in passing cars honked their horns, and police assigned to watch over the activities expressed their understanding and support.

According to Deseret News article on January 15, 2002, Falun Gong claimed that Gov. Mike Leavitt changed his original decision on proclaiming January 8, 2002 as Falun Gong Day in State of Utah after meeting with Yafei He, minister and deputy chief of mission at the Chinese Embassy, who openly said he would vent China's concerns about Falun Gong to Leavitt.
The article says, "The group has been banned in China since July 1999 , a date which, according to its members, coincided with its membership outpacing the number of registered Chinese in the ruling[party's name omitted] .
Since that time, Falun Gong members say, the government has undertaken a smear campaign against the movement both inside and outside China.
He's comments to Leavitt are part of that campaign, they say.
It isn't the first time a member of the Chinese Embassy or consulate has attempted to sway a U.S. leader about Falun Gong.
Stan Bogosian, the former mayor of Saratoga, Calif., told the Associated Press last year that a few days after he signed a proclamation declaring a week in honor of Falun Gong, two officials from the Chinese consulate urged him to rescind it.
When he refused, Bogosian said the Chinese asked him to remain "neutral" on the issue.
Salt Lake Mayor Rocky Anderson, who declared Jan. 22-28, 2001, Falun Gong week, also met with He.
Falun Gong, also called Falun Dafa, was a topic, and He expressed Olympic safety concerns, which Anderson forwarded to the police department.
It was Anderson's administration that granted the Falun Gong permission to protest during the Winter Games.
Members, who insist they are a peaceful group, say they will use that time to conduct their yoga-like spiritual movements and distribute literature about Chinese persecution.
They say thousands have died from torture at the government's hands."

24 Deaths Confirmed in Last 26 Days
NEW YORK, January 16, 2002 (Falun Dafa Information Center) -- While Falun Gong practitioners and supporters held vigils in over 30 cities around the world this past weekend, the Falun Dafa Information Center received reports of four more Falun Gong practitioners who died from police brutality in China. This brings the death toll to twenty-four reported in the last twenty-six days alone, a notable escalation in the rate of killings as the campaign of persecution waged by Jiang Zemin's regime continues.
Jiang Laixiu, 60, Died From Torture While In Solitary Confinement
Mr. Jiang Laixiu, a 60-year-old Falun Gong practitioner from Qiyang County Hunan province, died from torture and abuse while being held in Qiyang County Detention Center, according to sources inside China. Mr. Jiang was locked in a windowless cell for seven days and died from repeated torture by police at the detention center.
Tong Guijie, Beaten to the Edge of Death, Dies As Police Transport Him to Distant City
Tong Gujie was arrested by the Public Security Bureau in his hometown of Baicheng City, Jilin Province, for hanging up Falun Gong banners on the evening of December 11, 2001. Shortly after, Tong began a hunger strike to protest his illegal arrest and the abuse he had endured while in custody. On December 28, 2001, Tong's captors beat him until his vital signs grew very weak. Instead of taking Tong to the hospital, however, the police transferred him to the distant city of Changchun, in an apparent attempt to shirk responsibility for his imminent death. Tong Guijie never made it to Changchun, as he passed away en route on December 28, 2001.
Gao Ya, Beaten To Death By Police
Gao Ya, a Falun Gong practitioner from Changchun, Jilin Province, was beaten to death while in police custody. Reports of Ms. Gao's death first surfaced when a practitioner overheard police discussing her case. Authorities at the first police department contacted by FDI reporters denied all knowledge of Ms. Gao's existence. In a follow-up inquiry, however, one official confirmed her death in police custody but refused to disclose further details.
Li Jingdong, 41, Dies After Repeated Beatings, Torture, and Force Feeding
Li Jingdong, a 41 year-old practitioner from Pingdu City, Shandong Province, went to Beijing on November 3, 2001 to appeal for his right to practice Falun Gong. He was arrested by the police and after being severely beaten, was sent back to his hometown of Yushan Township. There, according to sources in China, the local police handcuffed him to a tree and lashed him with a whip made from twisted electric cables.
On November 6, Mr. Li began a hunger strike to protest his illegal arrest and torture. At one point, he asked his captors, "How can it be wrong for me to be a good person, following the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance?" The police responded by "feeding" him through a tube forced up his nose down into his stomach, a procedure commonly administered by untrained guards or even other prisoners.
On November 12, Mr. Li was transferred to the Pingdu Public Security Bureau. Three days later, his relatives were notified to retrieve his body. When changing his clothing, Mr. Li's survivors, his son, daughter, and 79 year-old mother, discovered wounds all over his body.
Adam Montanaro, spokesperson for the Falun Dafa Information Center, remarked, "Practitioners have been beaten and killed simply for handing out flyers or posting public banners on the street corner. They are simply revealing the truth about their practice and its persecution to those around them, and for this they are killed. This goes directly against China's own constitution, which guarantees freedom of speech, and is a gross violation of international human rights law."
The Falun Dafa Information Center has verified details of 347 deaths since the persecution of Falun Gong in China began in 1999. Government officials inside China, however, report that the actual death toll is well over 1,600. Over 100,000 have been detained, with more than 20,000 being sentenced to forced labor camps without trial.

(Clearwisdom.net) Whena female practitioner from Changchun City regained consciousness after passing out during police torture, she overheard her abusers discussing the death of female practitioner Gao Ya. They stated that Gao Ya had been beaten to death, because she refused to break away from Falun Gong, but the policemen were not allowing anyone to divulge this information.
(Gao Ya was a resident of Changchun City, but it is still unknown as of this date where she works). At present, Gao Ya's family and friends have not been notified and are still unaware of Gao Ya's death.
(Clearwisdom.net) While hanging Falun Gong banners on the evening of December 11, 2001, Dafa practitioner Tong Guijie from Baicheng City, Jilin Province was caught by thugs hired by the Baicheng City Public Security Bureau. (Tong had been arrested twice before. Since Tong was found to have heart disease during physical examination, the police didn't send Tong to the labor camp.) While being jailed in Baicheng City Detention Center, Tong went on a hunger strike. On the 17th day of his hunger strike, the detention center decided to transfer Tong to Changchun City, Jilin Province despite the fact that Tong was in critical condition. Tong died on the way to Changchun on December 28, 2001.
(Clearwisdom.net) Recently, another Falun Gong practitioner (male, name unknown) from Antu County, Jilin Province was tortured to death. Guards had covered his body with books and paper before beating and torturing him.
An examination of the body showed no scars on the skin, yet all of the major internal organs were severely injured. The practitioner was arrested by the Antu County police and sent to the Yanji Forced Labor Camp. In order to escape responsibility, officials and guards from the Yanji Forced Labor Camp urgently transferred all the practitioners illegally detained there to the Jiutai Forced Labor Camp in Jilin Province. We hope that practitioners from all over the world can eliminate the evil with their righteous thoughts.

In other news, Female Dafa practitioners Chen Shuxian and Yan Cuiling went to distribute truth-clarifying materials in a rural area. They were turned in, and the police from Antu County illegally detained them. During the detention, Chen Shuxian's limbs became numb, and her heart beat was irregular. The guards did not allow Chen's family members to visit her, and they tried to send the practitioners to a forced labor camp for their personal gain. [note: In some regions of China, policemen are given bonuses based on the number of Falun Gong practitioners they send to labor camp.] Through personal connections, they sent the two practitioners to Heizuizi Forced Labor Camp.

During the New Year's holidays, many overseas Chinese groups hosted parties and activities. As practitioners, we knew that this was a good opportunity to clarify the truth to fellow Chinese people.
One day, when handing out materials in front of the Chinese Consulate, a practitioner ran into a leader of the local Chinese community that he knew before but hadn't spoken to for a long time. After a few words of greetings, the leader of the Chinese community invited the practitioner to join their New Year's party and left him with a few tickets.
People's Hearts Are Changing
Towards the end of the party as people started to leave, more than 90% of the people gladly accepted our materials. Some were sympathetic to practitioners' experiences, while others reminded practitioners to be careful and protect themselves. Some said they were moved by the spirit of the practitioners. One man said, "You are truly great! I support you and hope you can stay steadfast until the end. Staying to the end will mean victory." Some people have pre-destined relationships with Dafa. Upon hearing the word "Falun Gong" a woman said, "You have to tell my father about it. He's really been wanting to learn it." Some people don't understand why the practitioners have to clarify the truth. A practitioner asked him, "Do you want to see more 'Truthfulness, Benevolence, Forbearance,' or more of falsehood, evil, and violence?" This person thought about it and said, "This is simple. This persecution is completely absurd." He changed in such a short time. A few people wanted to stop others from taking the materials, and they became very noisy. As a result, some people who had actually walked past us returned to see what was happening. They also asked for our materials. In the end, even people from the Chinese Consulate took some of our materials to read. The cosmic climate is changing very fast, and people are being awakened from the lies at a very rapid speed.
A Few Understandings
This Fa-spreading event made us realize that people's hearts are changing. We are now better able to demonstrate the realm of a cultivator through little things we do, always treat ourselves as Fa particles, harmonize everything we encounter, and steadfastly take every step as a cultivator.
In New York City's Chinatown, there are many precious Chinese people who have been poisoned by the Chinese dictator's vicious slander against Dafa. For the past four months, we have been holding photo exhibits and exercise demonstrations in Chinatown to help clarify the truth. The following are a few understandings and cultivation experiences reported by New York and New Jersey practitioners.
I. Avoiding the Group Mentality
Although large group activities were effective in drawing the public's attention, we often ran into problems when groups of undocumented workers, instigated by thugs who are paid by the Chinese Consulate, would disrupt our events. They would try to start an argument with one or two practitioners who were handing out flyers, and eventually they would surround those practitioners and start to yell at them. This was a large xinxing test for several practitioners because often they would get pulled into the mentality of the group and start to argue with the group, which just made the group get louder and louder. In several cases, it amounted to the police having to come and break-up the crowd.
We eventually came to the understanding that it's much more effective for practitioners not to approach large groups of people since it didn't serve the purpose of clarifying the truth at all. Instead many practitioners found that if they quietly approached a person who was sitting by himself behind the crowd, they could engage in a meaningful and "heart to heart" conversation.
After two months of organizing group events in the park, we started to realize that is very important foráthe participants of these type of activities to have a very good understanding of the purpose of our duties and the importance that relates to this activity. And it's important to get together afterwards to share what we learn and what we can do better for next time.
II. Using Different Approaches to Clarify the Truth
One weekend in November, while the Canadian SOS Walkers were in town, a group of about 50 practitioners decided to form groups of 2 or 3 practitioners and distribute materials and speak to the storeowners in every street of Chinatown. Each group had a Mandarin speaker, a Cantonese speaker and a Western practitioner. We started out by studying the Fa and then sharing experiences about previous efforts in Chinatown. Each group was then assigned a specific route and brought along as many truth clarifying materials as possible.
A) Westerners Speaking Chinese
Many of the westerners learned a few words in Chinese, such as "Falun Dafa Hao" ("Falun Dafa is good.") and "Falun Gong Zhen Xiang" ("Falun Gong Truth Clarifying"). I found that if I said "Ni Hao" (a greeting) and then "Falun Gong Zhen Xiang", it would quickly grab the attention of passersby's who were intrigued by a tall, westerner speaking Chinese in the heart of Chinatown.
I tried to emanate the brilliance of a Dafa particle the best way that I could, which usually manifested in the form of a very large smile. Even though some of the people chose to not take a flyer, most walked away with a smile and a positive image of Dafa. I always replied with "Xie-Xie" ("Thanks") as they walked away.
B) Being Selfless while clarify the truth
One male Chinese practitioner and one female westerner practitioner decided to go to the park where we had been holding our group events---this is where large groups of undocumented Chinese workers hang out all day and play mahjong. The majority of these people are illegally brought into the US from Fujian province. They don't have enough money to rent their own room at the outrageously high prices the Smugglers charge, so they share a single bed with another person in shifts and have to stay outside while the other person sleeps. [Note: Because they are so poor they become easily bought by the Chinese consulate, looking for ways to persecute Falun Gong overseas by hiding behind others.]
The two practitioners decided to hand flyers out to some of these illegal workers who were talking in small group. Right away, the men started to yell and swear at the practitioners. The Chinese practitioner tried to explain to them that Falun Gong is good and that the persecution of Dafa is wrong.
One of the men was drunk and not very coherent. The others started to push him into the female practitioner. The practitioner remained calm and didn't let this distract her from her goal of clarifying the truth. She calmly said to the men, "What is it that you want from us?" One of the men exclaimed, "We want money!" She then said, "if I had money right now, I would give it to you." The men were surprised and began to calm down. She then asked the man who responded why it was that he could not make money on his own. He then began to explain about how Fujians are discriminated against in Chinatown and it's very difficult for them to get jobs. He said that he was very unhappy and would like to know of a way out of his suffering. The female practitioner calmly said that Falun Dafa could end his suffering and eventually told him that he should read Zhuan Falun. The Chinese practitioner had a copy of Zhuan Falun that he had owned for 5 years---he immediately offered it to the man. The man gladly accepted it and said that he would read it.
After the event the western practitioner shared her experience and understanding with us. She said that she had learned the importance of using compassion and selflessness while clarify the truth the Chinese people. Instead of using the mentality of "I need to clarify the truth to this person ...and I need to use my wit to convince this person that Dafa is good", she was genuinely concerned about the well being of this person. The man was so moved by the fact that a westerner was truly concerned about him that the evil forces must have fled and thus the man was able to change his views about Dafa.
"If we determine that it is interference or [an attempt to do] damage, when we deal with the specific problem we should try our best to be calm and kind to these people who are at the surface, because when the evil uses people, these people themselves usually aren't aware of it (although those people who are used are usually either people whose thoughts are just bad or people who have bad thoughts arising)." (Fa-Rectification and Cultivation)
In light of Master's latest lecture at Florida, I can now see how truly magnificent this event was! "It doesn't matter if what you do is expose the evil, or if you use all sorts of approaches, be they direct, indirect or from different angles--as long as you can have people recognize this persecution, you are saving them, and you are extraordinary."
á III. Evil always dissolves in front of the righteous
The following is from a Chinese practitioner who participated in the walk through Chinatown: "At one point, I walked into a Chinese restaurant and handed over a flyer to a waitress.á As I continued to walk towards a table of 5-6 people, a man angrily got up and shouted that the flyer was "garbage."á I didn't move but looked straight in his eyes.á About 5 seconds passed, someone called out and said that one flyer was good for everyone.á At the same time, that man quickly replied and said that one flyer was good enough. Look who's truly afraid now?á The truth is, "evil always dissolves in front of the righteous!"
Once I went for lunch with my children to a Chinese restaurant. Before we went there I had already told my oldest daughter that, "This is a great opportunity to clarify the truth about the persecution to the Chinese there and to hand out newspapers." We entered and ordered the food. I did not have the courage to approach anyone and kept waiting for a suitable moment. But the longer I waited, the slimmer the chances became. When I was already paying the bill it dawned on me that this is my last opportunity to talk about Falun Gong. If I didn't do it now, even my children would notice my hipocrisy. They might think, "is it something bad to speak of Falun Dafa?" I therefore handed the young Chinese man a newspaper. He accepted and it and said, "Ah, Falun Dafa." He read a little. Then he said, "It is something similar to Kung Fu, martial arts." I still felt odd. I responded that Falun Dafa is something very peaceful and then let him know that it is persecuted in China. He read on. I tried to push aside my negative thoughts and feelings. My children sat quietly at the table and watched him read. Slowly his facial expression changed. Quietly he said, "I did not know this." Then he continued to read. Once again he told me that he had no idea about all this and genuinely thanked me for the newspaper. And, he promised to show it to his colleagues.
[Dr. Galli is an American psychiatrist who presents here her comments on the Fu Yibin murder case and Xinhua News Agency's article on December 17. Xinhua falsely alleged Fu Yibin was a Falun Gong practitioner who became insane from his practice.]
From a psychiatric point of view, it is very clear that this is a psychiatric case. Assuming that the perpetrator, Fu Yibin, is telling the truth to the reporter, we can conclude that he was psychotic in November 2001 when he killed his father and wife. Sadly, he still seemed to be psychotic during the interview that took place on December 17, 2001. He was not only delusional but he also was having command hallucinations and excessive energy at the time of the killing. He also seemed to have a chronic psychiatric condition.
His delusional thinking is revealed by his statement that at the time of the killing he was thinking, " I want them to leave suffering and go to paradise" and thinking that he would put the main consciousnesses of these three people inside his stomach to form a sun, earth and moon.
He also indicated that he heard some unknown voice commanding him by his statement, "a voice said 'it is time for action." The voice supposedly told him to destroy the three people in front of him. He continued, saying that, "I never thought they made me kill". He not only did what the voices told him to do but he also seemed to feel compelled to do so.
The newspaper article states that right before the killing he remembered his wife telling his parents that he had been confused, as if in a daze, and that his hands and feet were sweaty. He said his wife was concerned that something bad was going to happen. These were probably signs of nervousness, like when a person is getting ready to fight. He also talked about the energy that it took to kill three people, as if he thought his mother was also dead, and having to rest on the sofa afterward.
It seems that he had a long history of emotional problems. One of Mr. Fu's relatives told his colleague, Ms. Ma Ruijin, that eight years ago Fu would run in the street naked and that the family could not control him. This behavior indicates that he was delusional and exbibiting abnormally elevated energy levels. This can be even more clearly seen from a 1999 incident where he attacked his mother in a delusional episode. At the time, he thought his mother was the devil who wanted his father to die by going into his room to rest. He broke his mother's ribs, brutally beating her in an attempt to get rid of the "devil" that was supposed to be controlling her. When relating what happened in 1999, he stated, " I don't know where I got all this energy". Once again we see a combination of a high abnormal energy state and confusion. At the time, a neighbor called the police, who apparently took the case as a family conflict, releasing Fu instead of referring him for psychiatric evaluation.
At the time of the interview he still seemed to be psychotic. Not only did his statements lack logic but also they seemed to make sense to him. The content of his thinking was not coherent. Unrelated information seemed to make sense in his sick mind, like putting these people in his stomach to make a moon, earth and the sun, etc. In December, 2001, he continued to believe that he should have tried harder to get the devil out of his mother in the 1999 episode.
It is inhumane to incarcerate him without psychiatric care. It is clear that he was psychotic during the interview. It is also clear to me that he did not undergo psychiatric evaluation, otherwise the Chinese authorities would not be calling this a simple murder case but a psychiatric case.
It is unfortunate that the Chinese government resorts to twisting sad cases of severe mental illness into propaganda aimed at defaming Falun Gong. Relating Falun Gong to this case is absurd. If someone with a history of mental illness tries Falun Gong, it does not follow that Falun Gong causes their dangerous psychotic behavior. If a person studies physics or astronomy, would we blame his study of physics or astronomy for his crimes? This is irrational. It is also completely irresponsible not to have done a complete psychiatric evaluation, not to have investigated his prior mental health history, not to have interviewed family members and neighbors, nor to have conducted a detailed medical examination.
From a psychiatric standpoint this appears to be intended to mislead people to believe that this case is related to Falun Gong, a cruelly deceitful twist to this story of a sadly tragic episode of violence committed by a psychotic person with a long history of mental illness and dangerous behavior.

For the first time since she was illegally arrested in May 2000, a western reporter conducted a police-supervised prison interview of Dr. Teng Chunyan. After I read the Associated Press report, a story came to mind that I heard when I was a child. The story took place in the Spring and Autumn Period (770 -- 476 B.C.) of Chinese history. A citizen of Qi State was arrested in Chu State, accused of being a thief. The King of Chu State triumphantly said to an envoy from Qi State, "So your Qi people just behave like this!" The envoy from Qi answered, "Just look at that citrus tree. A citrus tree would grow very well in Qi. However, once moved to Chu, it would wither and die. Why is that? It is because the water and soil of Qi is so rich that the citrus tree can grow healthily. The water and soil in Chu, however, is poor, so even the strongest citrus tree couldn't survive here. The same holds for the people. That person was a very good citizen in Qi, however under the tyranny of Chu, he has no way to make a living except stealing from others." The King of Chu State was so embarrassed that he couldn't say a word.
Teng Chunyan gave up her peaceful, liberal, and comfortable life in the United States and went back to China to publicly reveal the truth of Jiang's evil regime and it's persecution of Falun Gong. In the current society where ordinary people pursue every little bit of physical interest with a selfish heart, what kind of people let go of their own lives to hold to the truth they believe in? What motivations could lead a "modern" person do such noble and selfless deeds? What kind of strength could give such a lady the courage to challenge the most shameless and malicious government authority in the world?
It is the strength of "Truth, Compassion and Tolerance." Only a Falun Dafa practitioner who cultivates "Truth, Compassion and Tolerance" can act in such a pure, selfless, compassionate and greatly forbearing way.
She used to be so outstanding, elegant, full of compassion and energy. Now she is detained in a prison with high walls topped by barbed wire. The New York chic that made her stand out in Beijing was gone. She lost her graceful appearance also. Her once pretty face became even a little swollen.
According to insiders, "She was interrogated for hours on end on more than fifty occasions. She was forced to stand and squat in excruciating postures for days and nights at a time. And she was even fined thirty thousand Yuan (The average monthly salary of a typical urban assembly worker is four hundred Yuan) as a 'service charge' for her own captivity." She was treated so cruelly that death could be a relief for her. A friend of hers in New York said, "I don't understand how a person could change so totally. I think she must be brainwashed." She has changed so much. Teng Chunyan, what have they done to you?
Kindhearted people: we hope you can see from Teng's tragedy the evil nature of Jiang's regime and the ugly truth of its cruel persecution of Falun Gong.
(Clearwisdom.net) On January 2nd, 2002, vicious policemen from the Shengli Police Station in Hegang City, Heilongjiang Province took Zhang Zhenfu, a sixty year-old Dafa practitioner, from his home. On December 17, 2001, she was arrested when she went to clarify the truth of Falun Dafa in Beijing. She was then transferred to the Liaoyang Detention Center and was later unlawfully sentenced to three years in forced labor camp. When she was brought to Masanjia Labor Camp for a checkup, they refused to take her in because she had been on a hunger strike for many days and was in a critical condition. Tang Lianchang, the police officer at Jiedonggu Village police station sent practitioner Guo Shuyan home at 2pm on December 30 because he did not want to burden himself with the responsibility of her death. Mr. Fu Chunsheng was a 51-year-old Falun Dafa practitioner. For appealing for justice in 1999, he was unlawfully sentenced to one year of forced labor. His term had been extended because he refused to renounce Falun Gong. He was finally released in September 2001. Later the police tried to send him to a brainwashing class. He firmly refused and was able to walk out of the police station after sending forth righteous thoughts. Then he returned home and continued to clarify the truth to people.
On the evening of December 28, 2001, Policeman Zhang Yuanren and two others from Jilin City's Fengman District Dachangtun Police Station, arrested him and took away all the Dafa materials found in his house. They sent him to the Fengman District Police Department the next day. Later that night they sent him to Jilin City's No.3 Detention Center.
On January 3, 2002, the detention center notified his family that he had died of a heart attack on January 1, 2002, at 11:50 p.m. Family members viewed his body on January 5. The condition of his body was horrendous and tragic. His whole body was black and blue and both ears were severely bruised. His head was dislocated to one side. His arms were twisted outwards (the position that indicated he had been tied up) and his head and face were badly maimed. There was blood in his mouth and cuts on his torso. His eyes remained open. Family members clarified that Fu Chunsheng was healthy and never had any heart problems. During his forced labor camp sentence in 1999, he had several physical exams. All results indicated normal heartbeat and blood pressure. After viewing Fu's body and witnessing suspicious reactions by the police, Fu's family have to ask: What are the police afraid of? What are they trying to cover-up?
Based on all the above questions, the family formally requested the following:
According to documents released by the Justice Department, detention center workers will be fired if they are found torturing and abusing Falun Gong practitioners. If anyone is found to have caused injury or death, the person will be prosecuted under item "Misprision and Bodily Harm" or "Misprision and Manslaughter" by the Criminal Law.
On behalf of Falun Dafa practitioners, their families and all the people of justice, we strongly demand that Jilin City's No. 3 Detention Center bring the murderers to justice immediately.
In China, Falun Dafa practitioners are under brutal persecution. We are urging all the human rights organizations and all kind-hearted people to pay attention to the current tragedy. Let's stop this bloody atrocity immediately.

Details of the arrest
I am a Dafa practitioner and I am 66 years old. At 10:30PM of December 13, 2001, I went to Dorm No. A309 (residence of the Aviation Construction Engineering Company) to distribute truth-clarifying materials. After I finished distributing them and got down to the first floor, I was arrested by the Aviation Security guard, Li Youshu. He called the Aviation branch Police Department on his cell phone and approximately 10 minutes later, the police department sent a car to pick me up. The Deputy Director of the police department, Xia Jibo beat me viciously and hit my head with a police baton more than 30 times. I felt dizzy. My head was very sore and bled profusely. The police also struck my arms with batons. Both my forearms were fractured . Even now, I am still unable to move my hands. My feet became injured from the beating. The top of my head bled profusely from being struck. The leftside of my forehead developed a large hematoma. My eyes became swollen and couldn't see anything. I could not even open my eyes with my hands. It is now 15 days later, but the swelling on my forehead and eyes has not subsided. I was also shocked with an electric baton twice. Xia Jibo was a ruthless brute; he fiercely struck at my chest and upper abdominal area with his fists. I could not remember how many times he hit me. He also kicked me in the loins and chest. My healthy body now had constant chest pain and a persistent cough. I could not move my hands and I could hardly walk; there were bruises all over my body. In such a state, the heartless Xia Jibo still handcuffed my fractured hands and hung me up on a windowsill for 18 hours.
From the evening of December 13 to 4PM on December 14, I had been handcuffed in the Aviation Police Department. After 4PM, the Aviation branch sent me in a car to the local Beigandao Police Station in Longquan. There, two young police officers saw me and said, "It's too brutal! It is not right! It is not right! They cannot beat people like that!" On the afternoon of December 16, I was sent to the Longquan Detention Center. On December 17, Dr. Fu at the detention center checked my injuries. On December 18, Dr. Fu and Officer Du carried me in a car to the Aviation Hospital to take photos, splint my fractures, dress my wounds, and administer medication. Even now, I still cannot take care of myself, put on clothing or wash my face. I am fortunate that two female Dafa practitioners have been taking good care of me. I don't know what it would be like without them.

On the evening of December 13, when I was arrested, at around midnight that evening, 10 policemen from the Aviation Police Department ransacked my home. They took away one copy of Zhuan Falun, 8 copies of truth-clarifying CDs and some stickers and other truth-clarifying materials, one TV (29', color TV), one tape-recorder and 530 Yuan (Chinese currency, RMB).

[Qidong County, Hunan Province] The Terrorist Acts of Enforcers From the "610 Office"

In February 2001, Dafa practitioner Jiang Laisheng, over 60 years old, from Qiyang County, after being illegally detained seven days in Qiyang County Detention Center was tortured to death.
Last year, male practitioner Ji Shun, director of Qidong County's Food Grain Bureau, was illegally detained in Qidong County's Detention Center. He is not yet released.
Practitioners Yan Bin and Deng Yunlu from Qidong County have been detained for over a year. As they did not cooperate with the arrangement of the evil, in November 2001, they were detained for brainwashing in Hengyang City. They are not yet released.
In November 2000, female practitioner Zhou Fei, a medical doctor in Qidong County People's Hospital, was illegally detained. Since her husband was an official in the county government she was sent home and kept under house arrest. She did not cooperate with the arrangement of the evil. In early 2001, she was forced to divorce her husband and was fired from work. The corrupt police, however, did not stop persecuting her. In the end, she was put into a forced labor camp without due process of law.
Zhang Xuanshou, male, a retired employee of Hengyang City's Qingshuitang Lead and Zinc Mine, was unlawfully sentenced to one year of imprisonment and was then kept under surveillance at home. His salary has been suspended for a year.
Deng Shunhua, female, is an employee from Hengyang City's Qingshuitang Lead and Zinc Mine. Her salary was suspended while she was still permitted to work without pay.

[Wenjiang County, Sichuan Province] A Miraculous Scene
On December 21, 2001, at about 1p.m., when a villager from The Fourth Group of Xinhua Village, Yongquan Town, Sichuan Province went out of her home, she raised her head and saw colorful lights illuminating everything and redden half of the sky. She saw Teacher, wearing a cassock and holding his hand vertically in front of his chest, and benevolently and solemnly sitting in the middle of the sky. The scene was very beautiful. The villager was excited. All her family members went out to see the scene. At that time, her neighbor was celebrating with a party. Many guests also saw this scene. They made more phone calls to tell their relatives and friends. Many of them saw the unprecedented, splendid spectacle. All were amazed. The spectacle lasted about 4 hours. All practitioners who saw the scene or heard about it realized that Teacher was hinting and awakening the enlightenment of sentient beings that "the Fa's Rectification of the Human World" was drawing near.
[Hebei Province] Thirteen-Day Hunger Strike of Female Practitioner Bi Xiaoling: Her Life is in Extreme Danger
Bi Xiaoling is a female practitioner from Dantun Village, Hexi Town, Linxi County of Hebei Province. She had been detained several times and was also tortured. Eventually, she was released with a verdict of "not guilty." On New Year's Day, she and another practitioner went to rectify the Fa in Beijing. The special agents patrolling in Tiananmen Square detained her. She did not compromise her beliefs, even though she was brutally tortured. In jail she went on a hunger strike. Fearing for her death, the police sent her back home. But someone watched her around the clock. A doctor often checked whether she ate or not. If she did, she would be detained immediately. Jiang's criminal regime issued a secret document, "Falun Gong is our enemy."
Bi Xiaoling has been on a hunger strike for 13 days by now. Her life is in extreme danger.
We hope all kind-hearted people pay attention to the issue and support this practitioner. The situation is very urgent.

[Panzhihua City, Sichuan Province] Persecution Cases Against Practitioners in the Panzhihua Colliery Corporation
Chen Xiangzhi, female, around 40 years old; a former volunteer assistant of the Taojiadu Falun Dafa practice site at the Panzhihua Colliery Corporation. She was unlawfully arrested many times for cultivating Dafa and was sentenced to one-and- a-half years of forced labor. After her release, lawless police officers often harassed her. On the evening of April 2001, Sun Youtian, Security director of Nantaizi Village arrested female practitioner Liu Yougui while she distributed Dafa truth-clarifying materials in Xudatun, Nantaizi Village, Qingshankou Township of Nong'an County. She was sent to a forced labor camp where she suffered all kinds of brutal tortures.
[Qianguo County, Jilin Province] Records of Vile Persons' Evil Deeds from the Hongguang Farm Police Station
Since July 22, 1999, enforcers from the Hongguang Farm's Police Station have been collaborating with the authorities from the local government, district police department and county police department to cruelly persecute practitioners at Hongguang Farm.
Zhang Zhen, director of Hongguang Farm's Police Station, relentlessly persecuted practitioners by means of brutally beating practitioners, ransacking their homes, conducting body searches, looting their properties, imposing unjustifiable fines, confiscating land, forced labor camp sentences and restricting personal freedom.
Zhang Zhen, without any search warrant, frequently led people from the county police department to forcibly break into and ransack practitioners' homes at midnight. They blatantly confiscated valuable property, such as motorcycles, for instance. During the practitioners' detention period, director Zhang made phone calls to the practitioners' families several times a day, to demand money. At their local liaison office in Beijing, they even openly demanded money and searched the practitioners' bodies thoroughly and shamelessly confiscated everything they found. They also took a large sum of money from practitioners with the excuse of "safekeeping the money for the practitioners." In total disregard for the Dafa practitioners, they fed them leftovers and sometimes they didn't give them any food at all. But they charged practitioners an incredible amount of money for food, which was many times higher than its actual value, and added other miscellaneous "fees." According to incomplete statistics, officials from the Hongguang Farm have fined and extorted more than 300,000 Yuan from practitioners. [The monthly income in rural China is 500 Yuan.] Some practitioners and their families had to pay 10,000 Yuan, an amount so large that many families couldn't afford to pay. The enforcers didn't issue any receipt for the "fines." Moreover, they seized a dozen hectares of land (about 30 acres) from practitioners. A lot of practitioners are now in debt, no longer have an income and can't even afford the basic cost of living. A lot of practitioners were sentenced to stays in a forced labor camp, not even sparing the children under 16 years old who were still in school as well as elderly people over 70 years old.

After successively arresting three practitioners, Yang Jingwei, Jing Xiaohong and Yao Xucai before the New Year's Day, personnel from Baishan City's Police Department again arrested another practitioner [by the same means].
On the morning of January 8, 2002, practitioner Huang Guilin, female, 39-year-old, an employee and former official of the Jiangdong Bank of Badaojiang District's Credit Union who was at home on vacation, was duped into going to her work unit with the excuse of a "new assignment" and arrested afterwards. That same afternoon, police officers ransacked her home. She was once detained in the Changchun Heizuizi Forced Labor Camp and had been working at Jiangdong Savings Bank after being released. Huang Guilin's whereabouts are unknown.

The "610 Office" government enforcers in Jixian County allocated 10,000 Yuan from the County Finance Bureau to reward Xu Yonghua, vile village head of Zhonghou Village of Shengchang Town and other criminals for arresting Falun Gong practitioners. Two practitioners had been arrested this time. The office's personnel broadcast on TV that whoever arrests one practitioner will be rewarded 5,000 Yuan.
Personnel from Jixian County's Detention Center each time forced-fed practitioners on hunger strike with 6-7 Jin (approximate 6.6 to 7.7 pounds) of saline water. As if this was not enough abuse, they even shackled the practitioners onto an iron door.

(Clearwisdom.net) Ever since the evil forces first started to persecute Dafa, have the Dafa practitioners living outside of China been persecuted as well? The answer is a resounding "Yes."
Some practitioners were beaten by thugs hired by the Chinese embassies and consulates, while others had their car windows smashed into pieces and telephones placed under surveillance. Because we practice Falun Gong, some of our relatives who live in Mainland China have been threatened and live in constant fear for their lives. Because we practice Falun Gong, we have been groundlessly denied permission to visit Hong Kong and Mainland China. All of these things are forms of persecution.
After being deceived by the evil propaganda from China, some Chinese coworkers of ours look at us strangely. For those of us who run our own businesses, some of our clients left us after believing in the propaganda of the evil forces or out of fear. It is not that our coworkers and clients are persecuting us, but what they are doing is a direct result of this evil persecution. After being slandered by the onslaught of evil propaganda, some practitioners receive no support from their family members in China for practicing Falun Gong. They even say that we are anti-China, and they are afraid that we are going to commit suicide. Once again, this is the result of slanderous, evil propaganda from the media.
The Chinese embassies and consulates in various countries have applied pressure to the Chinese media outlets outside of China. As a result, many Chinese media outlets do not dare to publish truth-clarifying articles provided by Dafa practitioners. The Chinese embassies and consulates directly participate in the persecution. The Chinese media outside of China has been threatened, bribed and forced to comply. As a result, we have been subject to personal attacks, and our good names have been sullied.
Because we practice Falun Gong, we cannot go back to Mainland China to visit our relatives, and we cannot attend some of the activities organized by the local Chinese communities. Our requests to extend our passports or visa applications are rejected. Because we practice Falun Gong, some of us have been followed by spies and had personal conversations secretly recorded. Because we take part in truth clarifying parades, we are photographed by embassy officials and verbally attacked. Because we practice our exercises in front of the Chinese embassies or consulates, our names are recorded, and we are surrounded and verbally attacked by groups of people who directly or indirectly work for the Chinese government. When we hold our Fa conferences, the hotels that rent us the conference rooms are subject to threats. As a result, the locations of many Fa conferences cannot be announced ahead of the time in order to minimize interference.
Hasn't every one of us Dafa practitioners outside of China experienced one or more of these things? The persecution that we have experienced is also a part of the overall persecution against Falun Gong.
Meekly accepting any kind of persecution is allowing the evil to exist or even inadvertently aiding it. This kind of persecution has been happening daily since the persecution against Falun Gong first started. But sometimes we sit idly by and cannot handle them with righteous thoughts on the basis with Fa. Of course, we need to eliminate the attachment of fear. We cultivators must search inward no matter what we encounter and care nothing about the unfair treatments that we have received as individuals. But at the same time, we must clearly differentiate personal cultivation from Fa-rectification cultivation. Any persecution against a Dafa particle is in reality persecution against Dafa. Regardless of whether it is big or small, and regardless of what the excuse is, any persecution against Dafa is not supposed to exist. Even more importantly, Dafa practitioners should not silently accept them or even nourish them.
Teacher Li said, "Of course, I reject all of the arrangements they've made, I don't recognize them." ("Fa-Lecture at the Conference in Florida, U.S.A.") "Did you know? I completely do not acknowledge this evil test arranged by the old forces." ("Suggestion")
Dafa practitioners have not done nearly enough to expose the evil persecution outside of China. Teacher Li said, "Those who are afraid of letting people know the truth are evil and not Dafa disciples." ("Suggestion")

Such accounts will help people recognize how evil this persecution truly is, and how it has effected hundreds of millions of practitioners and their families. Every single Dafa practitioner should recognize the importance of clarifying the truth in this regard. Perhaps you think that your own experience is rather insignificant. But if the experiences of all the practitioners are combined together, it will make people of the world clearly see through this evil persecution and thereby completely exposing the evil. Let the evil get completely exposed under the sunlight, and let it have no place to hide. "When you have all the people of the world, and all the people of China, see this evil drama for what it is, could the evil still have any effect? It will collapse." ("Fa-Lecture at the Conference in Florida, U.S.A.")
Dafa practitioners outside of China can compile all the relevant material together in the form of a report and submit it to the relevant agencies in the countries that they live in as reference material and starting points of investigations. It can also serve as early preparation work for activities that will take place in not-so-distant future, where practitioners will use legal means to punish the evil and demand compensation. The suffering that the evil faces will be much more than what it has forcefully given to Dafa and Dafa practitioners.
(Clearwisdom.net) I am a Dafa practitioner who has access to the Internet in Mainland China. During recent days while doing Dafa work I encountered inexplicable problems with the Internet. Examples include termination of the connection and inability to reconnect for long periods of time, power outages, computer lockup, loss of data and others.
I calmed myself and thought deeply to eventually find the cause of my problems. It was my attachment to making the most use of my time and thus not paying attention to studying the Fa, practicing the exercises and sending forth righteous thoughts. Due to the high work volume, I often worked hard but forgot to practice the exercises and to send forth righteous thoughts. I realized the seriousness of the problem after reading Master's new article and running into a series of tribulations.
I took care of the problem very quickly and my work efficiency also improved. It was really unimaginable - it took me only one day to finish the work that previously would have taken at least three or four days. I really felt the power of the Fa. After Fa study, practicing the exercises and sending forth righteous thoughts, I gained more time rather than losing any, since I was being able to work more efficiently.
Master Li tells us, "It is not a job, but cultivation practice." [from Essentials for Further Advancement] Being unable to break out of ordinary people's rigid way of thinking is one form of not stepping out of everyday people's level. "However, we should act from higher levels to treat problems." [unofficial translation] We should not deal with problems in the same way as everyday people. The smooth flow and success of our work depends on the factors that are behind our efforts to help Master rectifying the Fa, and also depend on our own realm and state.
After we cultivated to a higher realm, we could realize how funny our previous thinking was. This is also a reflection of our constantly improving levels. Here is an example: Before we went to Tiananmen Square to rectify the Fa, we would tell fellow practitioners that we must come back safely, not allow any evil to persecute us and that we would find a chance to get out of prison. In fact, beyond this level of thinking we did find that we tacitly approved of the evil persecution because we thought we would be arrested by helping Master with Fa-rectification.
I would also like to remind fellow practitioners that it is necessary to be cautious when doing Dafa work. I noticed on many occasions that if I missed just a little bit of detail or forgot to say one more word, it would cause unnecessary loss to the work.
I wrote all these words from my heart. They reflect my present enlightenment after improving my realm. A couple of days ago I would have thought writing down my enlightenment was a waste.
Let's do what Master told us in the Fa: we should go on with more wisdom, and more clarity.

My daughter is in the seventh-grade, and she has practiced Falun Dafa for four years now. The following is a few of her Fa-Rectification encounters and experiences.
One day, a friend told my daughter, "When the school principal asks you if you practice Falun Dafa, you must not say yes or you'll be expelled." She confidently stated, "Falun Dafa is so magnificent, how can I tell a lie?" Her mind was perfectly at ease when the school principal approached her, and she told him what Falun Gong is all about, how we cultivate xinxing, along with its morality and health benefits. Indeed, our entire family practiced Falun Gong. The principal asked, "As a student, doesn't practicing Falun Gong hinder your schoolwork?" She affirmed to him that in Falun Gong the Fa cultivates the body, and cultivating the heart is the main purpose. One could practice less when one's busy, and practice more when one's unoccupied. The principal questioned, "What about the Tiananmen incident broadcasted on television?" She firmly replied that Dafa practitioners would never take any lives, especially people or large animals, and neither will a true Dafa disciple self-immolate. The principal sarcastically said, "I know you display leadership qualities in class, but I never thought you have promotional skills too." They talked for the entire class-period, and the principal remained jocular throughout the conversation. At the conclusion, the principal said, "I'll speak with you another time." After two days, my daughter presented him with a truth-clarification CD, but the principal didn't accept it and scornfully asked her whether she [still] wanted him to keep his job. "Learning the truth doesn't hamper your work, and I brought it today so you can keep it," she told him as she left. A few days later the school displayed an Anti-Falun Gong exhibit. My daughter approached the principal and told him that he was corrupting innocent students. Although she didn't prevent the exhibit from displaying, nonetheless it was taken down after only one day.
Another time, my daughter realized that there were a lot of people in need of truth-clarification materials, so they could understand the truth and maybe be saved in the future. My daughter and I decided to distribute truth-clarification flyers at night, but my husband advised us to stay home because the weather was cold and she had to go to school the following day. My daughter explained, "It's no problem, a lot of people need to be saved. A few less hours of sleep are manageable, and I promise I won't be late tomorrow." In one village as she was posting a flyer on a door, a vicious dog barked as it dashed towards her. My daughter finished posting the flyer calmly and composedly without any fear. We continued to distribute flyers and didn't get home until one o'clock. The next morning, my daughter woke up on time without feeling any weariness.
Sometimes when I get lax while doing Dafa work, I can always remember my daughter's words, "A lot of people need to be saved."

She is a middle school student in Belgium, a very pretty 17-year-old girl. Once, after she saw a flyer about the persecution of Dafa practitioners that her mother got in a subway, she asked to help collect signatures for a Falun Gong appeal letter. The letter demanded that the Jiang government immediately release Zhao Ming and Teng Chunyan and stop persecuting Falun Gong. Not long after, she collected several pages of signatures.
Latest News From China
115 people published solemn declarations stating that their past words and actions under threats, terror and brutal persecution, that didn't conform to Dafa are completely void. They will continue to cultivate Dafa with determination, take solid steps to double their efforts in making up for the losses [they caused to Dafa], clarify the truth, eradicate the evil and become qualified Dafa disciples.
A group of practitioners in a city congratulated the founding of "Changchun Falun Dafa Day." They hung colorful Dafa banners on trees and electric poles on the side of main roads. A huge banner about 3.5 m [about 11.4 ft] in length and 0.7 m [about 2.3 ft] in width was hung up on a tower. The words "Restore Falun Dafa's Reputation" in red on a yellow background were very eye-catching.
A female practitioner in Jiamusi City posted truth-clarifying flyers and was caught by a vicious policeman, He Shuang. He dragged her into a rural police department and which resulted in all the buttons being pulled off of her clothes from the rough treatment. This practitioner clarified the truth to the policeman with compassion and refused to cooperate with the evil. Later, she was transferred to a detention center for a body search. She was forced to jump out from a window and was seriously injured. The police claimed, "This is an accident during a period of [medical] treatment, so we are not responsible for it."
Stories of Fa-Rectification Cultivation
On December 31, 2001, I went to Beijing with several other Dafa practitioners, and we were arrested. Four policemen from the Chaoyang Police Division beat us with leather belts and shocked us with electric batons. We were then transferred back to Deyang, Sichuan Province, where the local government officials detained us in a grain storage depot. The perpetrators there forced us to remain standing for several days, during which time we were not given anything to eat. Guard Jiang Ze used a club with small, sharp spikes to beat our heads and bodies.
Two months ago, I was arrested at a site for making truth-clarifying materials. In the detention center and the forced labor camp, I refused to do anything that inmates are required to do such as reporting the inmate number, working, doing exercises, and reciting rules. I went on hunger strike for 60 days to ask for my unconditional release, and lost 45 pounds in the process. Later, the doctors in the forced labor camp found it difficult to even set up a transfusion for me. Afraid of taking responsibility in case I died, the doctors asked my family members to take me home for medical treatment.
Zhenzhen began to practice Falun Gong in March 1999. She lives with an aunt, where she only eats some steamed sponge cake made of the mixture of ground bud rice and wheat flour everyday. Sometimes, she eats dough drop soup and pickles. But nevertheless, she saved 1000 Yuan RMB from her one semester's living expense to be used for truth-clarification.
News from Overseas
On January 5, practitioners from St. Petersburg and ten other cities in Russia, Ukraine and Latvia practiced and did Hong Fa (Falun Dafa introductions) at the downtown district of the city center. The news reporter from St. Petersburg's TV station made some on-the-spot coverage and reported this activity that evening. This is the first time that they did not add in the lies from Jiang Government during their report of Falun Gong.

By shutting up they hope you'll listen. Practitioners of Falun Gong have staged a worldwide silent protest to draw attention to the treatment of followers of that [belief] in China.
Members of Toronto's community lined the sidewalk in front of the Chinese Embassy on St. George Street Saturday night, and clasped their muffled hands in silent [meditation]. Clad in parkas, hands clasped [in meditation], they sat peacefully along the cold pavement and joined the vigil.
"There are 100 million people in China alone that practice Falun Gong," said Jason Loftus, a member of the [group] in Toronto. He said that as high-level Chinese officials became wary of [its] popularity, they began to clamp down on freedom [of belief]. "Many have been tortured to death (and) put in labour camps. We want to tell (people) that we're against this type of persecution."
There have been 20 [reported deaths] of Falun Gong in recent months. A telephone campaign has freed at least one girl from a Chinese labour camp.

(Clearwisdom Net) We were shocked to learn that in Mainland China, 20 Dafa practitioners were brutally tortured to death in these few days and the horrible crime where police murdered a Dafa practitioner on the street in broad daylight. Some practitioners in Germany came to Hamburg once again to appeal to the Chinese Embassy and called for all kind-hearted people to help stop this brutal, inhuman and unjustifiable suppression and release the innocent Dafa practitioners.
From the evening of January 12 to the afternoon of January 13, we appealed twice at the Chinese Embassy in Hamburg. Facing the big locked iron gate, we silently stood in the cold and mourned the practitioners slaughtered in China. We also hope Dafa practitioners' great benevolence and forbearance will touch those lost compatriots in the embassy.
We sincerely wish these great practitioners' blood would awaken those apathetic souls and sleeping consciences. One should know, "A single thought of his own will also decide his own future." At 10am, practitioners stood in front of the Chinese Embassy's tightly locked iron gate, solemnly reading the letter to the embassy in both Chinese and Japanese and called for the immediate end to the killing.
The young mother holding her one-month infant participated in the vigil as well as a elderly grandmother with her grandson. The firmly righteous thoughts and the selfless, fearless and magnificent behavior will completely eliminate all evil forces.

World Journal, January 15, Boston -- Practitioners in Boston area today held a press conference in a park near China Town, accusing Chinese government (Jiang Zemin) killed 22 Falun Gong practitioners inside China within the last 22 days. In a press statement issued in the conference, they said there would be a three-day candle light vigil in over 30 cities all over the world in attempt to bring worldwide attention to Chinese Government's (Jiang Zemin) persecution against Falun Gong. They stated that Falun Gong practitioners would gather around Chinese Consulates all over the world to hold candle light vigils to condemn the recent situation of arresting, torturing and even killing Falun Gong practitioners in China. The cities included are New York, Boston, Washington DC, Chicago, Los Angles, San Francisco, Toronto, London, Paris, Taipei, Tokyo and Hong Kong, etc. In the conference, they showed many evidences of inhumane treatments toward Falun Gong practitioners in China, hoping to let the public know the atrocity committed by Chinese Government. A local practitioner said those practitioners in China were only gathering together to practice the exercises and they had no intent to do anything against the government, so he couldn't accept that Chinese government called them [Jiang's slanderous name omitted.] He also felt sorrow that Falun Gong practitioners in China were being brutally tortured. He hoped that everybody in the world could become aware of those incredible persecution, torture and atrocities committed by Chinese Government against Falun Gong practitioners in China and therefore help the practitioners to obtain justice.

The Chinese leadership's preoccupation with stability in the face of continued economic and social upheaval fueled an increase in human rights violations. China's increasingly prominent international profile symbolized in 2001 by its entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) and by Beijing's successful bid to host the 2008 Olympics was accompanied by tightened controls on fundamental freedoms. The leadership turned to trusted tools, limiting free expression by arresting academics, closing newspapers and magazines, strictly controlling Internet content, and utilizing a refurbished Strike Hard campaign to circumvent legal safeguards for criminal suspects and alleged separatists, terrorists, and so-called religious extremists. In its campaign to eradicate Falungong, Chinese officials imprisoned thousands of practitioners and used torture and psychological pressure to force recantations. Legal experts continued the work of professionalizing the legal system but authorities in too many cases invoked "rule of law" to justify repressive politics. After the September 11 attacks in the United States, Chinese officials used concern with global terrorism as justification for crackdowns in Tibet and Xinjiang.

That same month, the State Council announced revised "Regulations on Printing," which included a sweeping provision forbidding publication of reactionary, erotic, or superstitious materials or "any other" material forbidden by the state. In early November 2000, courts sentenced ten people to prison terms ranging from five years to life for illegally printing and selling books about such topics as the Chinese intelligence community and the film community. In September, tens of thousands of Falun Gong publications were among some 500,000 documents confiscated in Anhui province.
The foreign press was also muzzled. In early March, after Time ran a story on Falun Gong, Beijing banned future newsstand sales of the magazine. In June, five security officers beat an Agence France Presse reporter after he photographed a protestor outside a "Three Tenors" concert held to support Beijing's Olympic bid. In July, government officials in Beijing prohibited the U.S. CBS television network from transmitting video footage for a story about Falun Gong. Chinese authorities banned the October 29 issue of Newsweek when it ran a cover story on corruption.

China continued to crack down on groups it labeled cults and on independent religious organizations. Falun Gong continued to experience the harshest repression, with thousands of practitioners assigned to "reeducation through labor" camps and more than 350 imprisoned, many for nothing more than printing leaflets or recruiting followers for protests . On June 11, the Supreme People's Court and the Supreme People's Procuratorate issued a new interpretation of cult provisions in the Criminal Law to make it easier to punish practitioners on a wide variety of charges.

No independent watchdog organizations were permitted in China; in Hong Kong there was a vibrant NGO community functioning without any apparent government interference.
THE ROLE OF THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY
Canada, European Union, and Japan
During trade meetings in China in February, Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien raised human rights concerns in Tibet and the crackdown on Falun Gong, and the two countries held a human rights dialogue in July.
We were asked to participate in a Health theme-day arranged by a local school and to inform them about Falun Gong. Of course we accepted the opportunity to expose the evil persecution in China and to clarify the true facts about Falun Gong.
We prepared the room with a photo-exhibition.
The day begun with the video "Falun Gong: The Real Story."
We then taught the exercises. The students had no problem learning them and held a positive attitude, the atmosphere was very comfortable.
In total, 50-60 people attended the two sessions. When we were finished, a teacher came up to us and asked if we would consider coming to her school and talk to a group doing a report on human rights. She also wanted us to demonstrate the exercises to another group focusing on health issues.

truth-clarification materials to the Chinese tourist groups and explained the
true facts of the persecution of Falun Gong.

The open ceremony of "Falun Dafa --- Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance Week" and "The Path of Fa-rectification" photo exhibition was held in the City Hall. Chinese Australian artist Ms. Zhang Cuiying made a special trip from Sydney to participate the ceremony and held the painting exhibition. All the proceeds of her exhibition will go to charity for disaster relief. A short time after 10am, the ceremony of Brisbane's "Falun Dafa --- Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance Week" began to warm applause. Three VIPs from political circles who attended the opening ceremony came to the platform to express their congratulations, support and favorable wishes. One VIP from the police organization spoke saying, "I trust and support you because all your activities are about Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance." Another one stated, "as a district representative, giving support to Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance will accelerate the peace and justice in his districts." So he hoped that we continued putting forth efforts to carry forward the peaceful values of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. The third councilor mentioned that he could not understand what is happening in China. The principle of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance is excellent. Why couldn't [the chinese government] accept it? He expressed his strong support for Falun Gong.
Ms. Zhang Cuiying also stepped up to the platform and talked about her journey in art, the experience of obtaining the Fa and Jiang's Political Gang's brutal persecution against her. She expressed her gratitude towards Australia Government for their rescue effort and presented her painting to the VIPs.

The host announced ten congratulation letters from government officials including the congressman, mayor and deputy mayor. Young practitioners from Brisbane recited Teacher's Hongyin and performed entertainment programs. The ceremony ended with a happy atmosphere.
In spite of the 40C degree weather, the practitioners outside the City Hall continued introducing Falun Dafa to passersby, delivering materials and clarifying the truth. The practitioners also demonstrated the Dafa exercises under the high temperature. The celebration continued into the night. In order to support Falun Gong practitioners' three day international protest against Dictator Jiang and his gang's slaughter of Dafa practitioners, during this "Falun Dafa Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance Week", Brisbane practitioners conducted corresponding activities to raise people's awareness of the vicious persecution and support justice.

December 17, 2001, the initial Kiev Falun Gong press conference was held in the Ukraine National Reporters Association building. Falun Gong practitioners from Kiev, Odessa, St. Petersburg (Russia), Riga (Latvia) and Pittsburgh (USA) attended this press conference.

The media attending the news conference were able to learn about the principles of Falun Dafa and the truth about the Chinese Government's persecution against Falun Dafa practitioners. Three TV stations including Ukraine National TV, 6 newspapers and the Ukraine National Broadcasting Company sent reporters to the press conference.
This news conference was an important step for Dafa practitioners in Ukraine in the Fa-rectification process. It helped the Ukrainian people to avoid being deceived by the evil forces and provided opportunities to save people.
On January 12 and 13, practitioners in Japan held a series of activities in Nagoya, Japan's third largest city. About 200 practitioners from across Japan gathered at the Youth Center of Nagoya. We studied Teacher's Fa-Lecture at the Conference in Florida. USA and other new articles, and we also shared Hongfa experiences in holding local activities. Practitioners were deeply moved by Teacher's great compassion and realized even more the importance of studying Fa, sending forth righteous thoughts and clarifying truth. On the evening of January 12 while studying Fa, we learned that practitioners in over 30 cities around the world would be holding candlelight vigils and other appeal activities over three days at Chinese embassies and consulates to condemn the escalation of arrests, torture and murder of Dafa practitioners in China by Jiang's regime, 40 practitioners drove to the Chinese Consulate in Osaka and held candlelight vigil there. In the morning they returned to Nagoya to participate in the 2nd day activities. In the meantime, over 40 practitioners held a candlelight vigil outside the Chinese embassy in Tokyo. Practitioners staying in Nagoya continued their Fa Study and experience sharing and sending forth righteous thoughts at the top of each hour from 8 to 11 pm to eliminate the evil and save sentient beings.

On the morning of January 13 at the top of the hours of 6am, 7am and 8am, practitioners sent forth righteous thoughts together with practitioners around the world. Then practitioners went to Famous City Park, the largest park of Nagoya. In the park we sent forth righteous thoughts and demonstrated the exercises to visitors. At 1pm, accompanied with music of Pu Du and Ji Shi we held banners that read Falun Dafa Is Good, Truth-Compassion-Tolerance, SOS! Urgent Rescue Falun Gong Practitioners Persecuted in China, China: Stop Persecuting Falun Gong In China, and started a parade. During the parade, we constantly sent forth righteous thoughts. The parade procession was peaceful and solemn. The energy field of compassion was so powerful that many practitioners were moved to tears. The people passing by watched the parade attentively. Along the parade route some practitioners distributed to citizens Dafa flyers in Chinese, English and Japanese. Many people accepted the flyers and started to read at once. The parade lasted two hours and concluded successfully at Dancing Crane Park. After taking some group photos, practitioners went to the embassy and consulates in Japan to participate in the candlelight vigil activities.
We treasure this opportunity of meeting at Nagoya and clarifying the truth to the citizens there. We strongly feel that it is Teacher's great compassion: Teacher would not give up on anyone who has a predestined relationship.
