SALT LAKE CITY, January 14, 2002 (Falun Dafa Information Center) - Senior members from the Chinese Embassy in Washington D.C. visited Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt and Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson to urge them to stop Falun Gong practitioners' public activities during the Winter Olympics, reiterating the Chinese regime's propaganda defaming Falun Gong and those who practice it worldwide.

According to a January 11 report from the Deseret News, one of Salt Lake City's two largest newspapers, the group of Chinese officials was headed by Yafei He, Minister Counselor and Deputy Chief of Mission at the Chinese Embassy in Washington D.C.

Today, Falun Gong practitioners held a press conference at the Salt Lake City State Capitol to expose this event as part of a growing list of disturbing incidents of Chinese officials pressuring U.S. Government officials regarding their statements and positions on Falun Gong, and human rights in China. The practitioners also related what they believe to be the real reasons behind the persecution and why the Chinese government has invested so much in its attempt to defame Falun Gong.

The press conference featured testimonies from five Falun Gong practitioners who were detained in China, as well as a slow motion deconstruction of CCTV video footage covering the alleged "self-immolation" event that Chinese officials site as an indication of the "danger" posed by Falun Gong. The video analysis shows several suspicious elements that call into question the Chinese government's depiction of those events. Falun Gong practitioners cited an International Education Development (IED) Statement at the United Nations, which classified the Chinese government's persecution of Falun Gong as "State Terrorism."

Falun Gong practitioners in Salt Lake City stated that the Embassy's defamation against the character of Falun Gong is unacceptable and, in fact, libel: "We demand that the Chinese officials from the Embassy offer a public apology for these groundless lies and slander."

The practitioners in Salt Lake continued, "We hope that people will not be fooled by the Chinese regime's propaganda. We ask that people take a close look at this issue for themselves...investigate the nature of Falun Gong, those who practice it, and the effects it has had on millions of people's lives throughout the world. I think then it will be clear that the real reason the Chinese regime targets Falun Gong so viciously is because the truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance of its teachings ennoble the human spirit, and gives people the ability to strictly adhere to non-violence, regardless of how they are treated. The Communist regime fears this...that is the real reason for the persecution."

The Falun Dafa Information Center has verified details of 343 deaths since the persecution of Falun Gong in China began in 1999 - over 20 over those were reported in the last 22 days. Government officials inside China, however, report that the actual death toll is well over 1,600. To date, over 100,000 Falun Gong practitioners have been detained, with more than 20,000 being sentenced to forced labor camps without trial.

On Monday morning Falun Gong practitioners with banners and candles staged another protest against the recent killings of the practitioners in China. Many cars that passed by sounded their horns to support us. A photographer from a photo-agency and another from a national newspaper came. They even followed us into the consulate when a few of us went in to hand over a letter to the council. It was just before closing time but a person from the consulate came out to close the door right in the face of the practitioner who had the letter. Later two gentlemen came to apply for visas but they couldn't go in either. Later when the practitioners left they were allowed to go in. One of the practitioners visited the largest news agency in Sweden. A couple of hours later the agency published the protest action and incident in the consulate as well as the news of other similar protest actions around the world, including Stockholm. They quoted a part of our letter to the council: "During the last 22 days we had received regular reports from China concerning at the at least 20 Falun Gong practitioners who had died of torture by the police."

From 3 to 6 p.m. on January 12, over 60 Hong Kong practitioners held a press conference outside of the China Liaison Office to strongly condemn the ever-escalating persecution and the Jiang regime's killing of Dafa practitioners. Jiang's regime has given orders to step up its persecution around the New Year, and this has resulted in at least 20 deaths in less than one month. This number might be just the tip of the iceberg. Hong Kong practitioners held memorial activities with practitioners around the world. We admonished those people who committed the crimes and warned those who assisted in the persecution: The World Is Watching! Stop Your Crimes! Good Will Be Rewarded with Good and Evil Will Be Met with Evil. Every Person Will Repay His/Her Crimes According to Heavenly Principles.

Practitioners unfurled banners that read "Stop Terrorist Killing!" "Do Not Be Evil's Accomplices!" "343 Practitioners Persecuted to Death" "Stop and Condemn Jiang's Regime's Persecution of Falun Gong." "Eradicate Jiang's State Terrorism" and "Falun Dafa is Good." A practitioner read a statement condemning Jiang's crimes and some death cases. Several media agencies interviewed practitioners.

After the press conference, practitioners took turns sending forth righteous thoughts and doing the exercises. Their righteous thoughts effectively eliminated the evils in the three realms.

The sit-in activity continued on the afternoon of January 13. Throughout these several days, practitioners also took time to distribute Dafa truth-clarifying information at several tourist attractions to disclose the evils and clarify the truth, especially in the areas where Chinese tourists frequently visit. The effects get better everyday. More and more mainland Chinese are coming to know the truth.

Today (Sunday 13 Jan. 2002) is the 145th day of Australian practitioners' hunger strike relay and appeal in front of the Chinese Embassy in Canberra, which started on August 22, 2001. The local newspaper, Canberra Times, published a report today. The hunger strike was initiated to support the 130 practitioners' hunger striking in Masanjia Labour Camp and appeal to the Chinese government to stop the persecution of Falun Gong and release all practitioners arrested or detained in labor camps.

After the first week of the hunger strike by 14 practitioners, the protest turned into a hunger strike relay as more practitioners wanted to join.

The hunger strike has been well supported by the Canberra community. By now many Canberra residents are aware of what is going on in front of the Chinese Embassy in Australia. Some have made the effort to record the hunger strike on videotape to share with their families, friends/relatives, and even have sent tapes overseas.

The hunger strikers and their supporters are also met by many busloads of tourists from China every day. Despite some cold Chinese faces, who have apparently been brainwashed by the one-sided voice of the Chinese official media and government propaganda, many Chinese tourists are moved by the courage and persistence of Australian Falun Gong practitioners in their effort to clarify the truth. They get to know what the truth is when they see and talk to us.

Quite a number of tourists accept truth-clarifying materials from practitioners, although many are afraid to do so due to pressure from the government and fear of being persecuted when they return.

Despite many efforts to deliver appeal letters to the Chinese Embassy, they have maintained the same cold attitude with no response. This is a clear indication that they are afraid to face the practitioners. If a government cares about its people, it will not refuse appeal letters.

To condemn the Chinese government's continuing and escalating persecution of Falun Gong in China, and to commemorate the more than twenty practitioners who recently have died from torture in China, we held a candlelight vigil last night. Another one is scheduled for tonight as well.

The Australian practitioners' hunger strike relay will continue in front of the Chinese Embassy until Fa rectification is completed.

A BATTLE of wills is being fought on a leafy street in Yarralumla,[...].

On one side of the road is the imposing Embassy of the People's Republic of China, on the other is a group of protesters sitting under the trees, often in meditation pose and playing music.

The protesters are Falun Dafa or Falun Gong practitioners who have held their vigil on the grass since October 1, last year [note: actual date was August 22, 2001].

The Falun Dafa movement, [...], accuses the Chinese Government of imprisoning and torturing followers of a faith based merely on meditation and relaxation exercises, not unlike yoga or tai chi, because they feel threatened by its popularity.

Yesterday also marked the start of a three-day vigil by Falun Dafa practitioners at Chinese embassies and consulates in more than 30 cities around the world.

A Falun Dafa press release says the aim of the three-day vigil is to "condemn the recent rampage of arrests, torture and killings of Falun Gong practitioners in China". Visitors to the protest site in Canberra are handed a copy of the Falun Gong newsletter, which includes sketches of torture methods allegedly used on practitioners in detention centres and forced labor camps in China.

Followers of Falun Dafa say to kill is an anathema to their beliefs. A Sydney factory worker and familiar face at the Canberra protest, Zhao Liqi, says it is the Chinese Government that is ruthlessly persecuting followers back in China.

A banner at the Canberra protest site displays the number of days the followers have been on a hunger strike in protest against the Chinese Government's alleged treatment of practitioners. It is up to day 145.

That is slightly misleading because the protesters are taking it in turns to fast for 24 hours at a time. However, their commitment to the cause appears unshakeable as they maintain a round-the-clock vigil. Passing motorists often beep their car horns in support.

Both the ACT Government and the Australian Federal Police say they do not have a problem with the followers being there because they are maintaining a peaceful protest.

Peter Van Runt, who runs a computer repair business in Canberra, has been practising Falun Dafa for the last eight months. He says it is not something a person "signs up to".

Mr Van Runt says his daily sessions have cured his migraines and hay fever.

"I feel much more peaceful, like I've found my place in the world," he said.

Daniel Clark, an electrical engineer from Canberra, has been a follower for three years and attributes his considerable weight loss to it.

"It's made me a more calm and more amiable person and I've also lost 25kg over the last three months."

The Falun Gong newsletter says that since the Chinese Government banned Falun Gong in 1999, more than 100,000 people have been arrested, more than 300 tortured to death, some 500 sentenced to prison, 20,000 sent to labour camps and more than 1000 to mental hospitals.

In response to the recent deaths in China of 20 practitioners in 22 days, Boston area practitioners gathered in a small park next to the Chinatown Gate for two days of activities. On Saturday morning January 12, beginning at 10 a.m. practitioners spent the day sending forth righteous thoughts and clarifying the truth to all who passed by. Flyers were distributed all weekend encouraging ordinary people to make phone calls to China condemning those responsible for the torture and deaths of practitioners. It was a very good opportunity to let non-practitioners take part in our truth clarifying work. Throughout the day on Saturday, while some remained in Chinatown, many practitioners separated into small groups and walked around the city. They passed out materials and carried banners that read, "22 days, 20 Deaths" and " China, Stop the Mass Killing of Falun Gong Practitioners." Everyone returned to Chinatown for the 4, 5, and 6:00 p.m. sending forth righteous thoughts, ending with a candlelight vigil.

Sunday, January 13 began with a winter storm that brought a lot of snow to Boston. Our press conference was to be held at 12:30 p.m. Even though the snow fell very heavily at times, practitioners would not be turned away by the weather. Everyone arrived at 11:00 a.m. to begin setting up. A large tarp was stretched out in the park and the photo displays and banners were set up underneath it. Practitioners lit candles and sent forth righteous thoughts, transforming the cold, wet little park in the corner of Chinatown into a bright, magnificent site for our press conference. At the event, we read the press statement and recent reports of torture in English, Chinese, and Cantonese. As soon as we began to read the statement, a great wind came through the park; as we continued, the snow ended and many people passing by stopped and listened. Throughout the reading our voices echoed across the streets of Chinatown carrying the message that "The persecution must be stopped," and that "Falun Dafa is good."

On the evening of January 13, practitioners from the Tampa Bay Area held a candlelight vigil at St. Petersburg's famous attraction, the Pier, to raise awareness of the escalating persecution against Falun Gong practitioners in China. As people passed by, we shared with them what is happening in China. We performed the exercises and sent forth righteous thoughts. The visitors were attracted to our peaceful movements and found it inconceivable that the peaceful exercises could be persecuted in China with over 300 people losing their lives. Some people learned the Dafa exercises on the spot and many people accepted Dafa flyers and expressed their support.

Because there is no Chinese Embassy or Consulate within 1500 miles, Central Florida Falun Gong practitioners had to find alternative ways to participate in the three-day worldwide Vigil to Stop the Torture and Murder.

There was neither time nor money to make elaborate plans, but Central Florida practitioners felt that this vigil was an important opportunity to join our hearts and our energies with practitioners worldwide to clarify the truth and help stop the persecution of Mainland Chinese practitioners.

On Saturday morning, a group of Orlando practitioners traveled to the beachfront city of Daytona to join practitioners there for exercise class, hongfa, and group study. In the evening, everyone met on the public beachfront boardwalk to demonstrate the exercises, send forth righteous thoughts, and distribute information about Falun Gong.

It was too windy to light candles, but the peaceful energy of the exercising practitioners attracted passers-by. There was not much foot traffic, but almost every person who walked by not only took a flyer but also stayed to talk and learn about the persecution. Everyone who stopped was genuinely touched by the plight of the Chinese practitioners and the principles of Truth, Compassion, and Tolerance.

Sunday night, Orlando practitioners gathered in a popular downtown public park to continue our efforts. Practitioners set up posters about the persecution, laid out flyers, and sat behind a row of candles, sending out righteous thoughts and taking turns clarifying the truth to the people who passed by. As on the night before, there were not a lot of people but every person who did pass by seemed to have a strong predestined relationship with the Fa. Almost every person who walked by stayed for several minutes to discuss Falun Gong and the persecution. Practitioners felt that because they were acting in concert with practitioners around the world, the righteous energy developed by the whole body of Dafa dispelled all interference and attracted all the right people, so that even if our presentation was simple and our exposure limited, our efforts were still tremendously effective.

The effect of the Fa grows as the Fa approaches the human world and the interference weakens. Many of the people that we talk to now are Lords and Kings of paradises who desperately want to get Dafa. Central Florida practitioners were deeply moved to see so many of these beings get their chance at a glorious future, and to see so clearly the benevolent power of Dafa.

On the evening of January 12, 2002, practitioner from Pittsburgh joined practitioners worldwide to hold a candlelight vigil to strongly condemn the new round of brutal repression and killing of Dafa practitioners by the Jiang regime. They demanded an end to the killing of Falun Gong practitioners immediately.

A reporter from the major local newspaper, the Pittsburgh Post Gazette came to interview practitioners and did an objective report of the event.

On January 13, more than 250 practitioners gathered in front of the Chinese Consulate General to strongly protest the state terrorism and brutal killing led by Jiang and Luo Gan. In the last 22 days, 20 Falun Gong practitioners were killed!

At the top of the hours of 8 a.m., 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. (Sydney time), practitioners sent forth righteous thoughts together with practitioners around the world to eliminate the evils. They continued to send forth righteous thoughts at the top of each hour afterwards. The powerful righteous thoughts forcefully suffocated the evils, and shook and purged the remnants of evil in other dimensions.

Practitioners protested the murders committed by Jiang and his accomplices. In the meantime, practitioners also admonished the accomplices: "The ones who do evil against Dafa go down into the gate of no-life." Jiang cannot even protect himself. When the retribution comes the ones who do evil will not escape from the fate of going down into the gate of no-life.

Eliminating the evils with righteous thoughts, practitioners understand more and more the importance of clarifying the truth to Chinese people who have been poisoned by the deceptive propaganda.

On January 12, Denmark practitioners held a candlelight vigil in front of the Chinese embassy to strongly condemn the criminal acts of escalating brutal repression and killing of Dafa practitioners by Jiang's regime. They appealed to kindhearted people around the world to curb the most heinous state terrorism in modern history.

It has been reported that in the last 22 days, 20 peaceful and innocent Falun Gong practitioners were killed in Mainland China. It is conceivable that many more people were killed but their names remain unknown. If the world remains indifferent and allows this unchecked killing to go on, the terrorist crimes will surely cause even more disasters throughout the world.

Beginning at 7 p.m., we held a two-hour candlelight vigil in front of the Chinese embassy. Denmark had just experienced a heavy snowstorm. Practitioners sent forth powerful righteous thoughts to eliminate the evils despite of the very cold weather. In between, we expressed our condemnation and protest by doing Dafa exercises.

Throughout the two-hour activity, Falun were all over the sky accompanying practitioners. Huge Falun were rotating and the scene was magnificent.

On January 13, practitioners went to downtown Copenhagen to clarify the truth to the public and distribute the Danish press release. In the afternoon, practitioners continued their peaceful appeal in front of the Chinese embassy.

Yesterday, followers and practitioners of Falun Gong assembled late in the afternoon in Slottsskogen for a candlelight vigil.

The reason was that there has been a dramatic increase in the number of Falun Gong followers who have been killed in China during the last weeks. According to information from Falun Gong Information Center, there are reports of 20 followers killed in China in the last three weeks plus.

The followers are said to have been killed through torture and beatings in police custody at several different places in China.

Sunday, January 13, 2002 Calgary Falun Gong practitioners say they will continue to demonstrate daily to raise awareness about human rights abuses in China.

Roughly 20 practitioners of the meditative, rhythmic stretching practice demonstrated outside Calgary's Consulate General of the People's Republic of China on 6th Avenue S.W. Saturday as part of a worldwide protest against the [persecution by the] Chinese government.

The practice is outlawed in China and practitioners say 338 people have been killed due to police brutality while in custody. At least 100,000 have been detained, while 20,000 have been sent to forced labour camps, they say.

Eight recent deaths in the last three days prompted the Saturday protests, which also took place in Toronto, Ottawa and other major cities.

"We just keep coming back to try to raise awareness and try to get the abuse to stop," said Ian Oliver, a Calgary man who has practised Falun Gong for two years.

"We want to let people of the world know what is truly going on. The Chinese government will tell you a whole series of things that are not true about this practice but what we practise is based on the characteristics of Truthfulness, Compassion and Tolerance."

Oliver is one of 20 Calgary residents who practise Falun Gong outside the consulate daily between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m.

Practitioners say Falun Gong, also called Falun Dafa, is an ancient form of Qigong, the practice of refining the body and mind through physical exercises and meditation.

Chinese President Jiang Zemin outlawed Falun Gong and began the persecution of practitioners in July 1999.

Nancy Sun, 27, came to Calgary one month ago from Toronto. Prior to that, she lived in China, where she was arrested for practising Falun Gong.

Sun was released from three days in custody after her mother posted $8,000 bail. But she and her family were terrorized by police, she said.

She moved because of the threats.

"We hope by being here today we can let people know what is happening. We want the Canadian government to know," she said.

[...] Calgary West Canadian Alliance MP Rob Anders said he supports the Falun Gong community and has recently written to the federal government asking it to consider withdrawing from the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Anders has long been an outspoken critic of the Chinese government.

"The (Falun Gong) practitioners are getting support from all corners of the world from people who are outraged at what's happening to their fellow practitioners in China," Anders said.

"And for those who practise and are fortunate enough to live outside of China, they are lucky to be in cultures where they can go ahead and protest the lack of freedom in China and draw attention to the suffering of their family or friends back home."

(Clearwisdom.net) It was just past 8:00 p.m. on December 21, 2001, when three policeman dressed in black, led by two officials in the village, kicked open the door of Li Jingchun's home in Gaogezhuang Village, Dongshaoqu Township, Miyun County of Beijing. They came to search for the village's Dafa disciples, who had been forced into homelessness by the persecution for almost 9 months.

Hearing this news, Li Jingchun's father-in-law rushed there within 10 minutes. Upon entry, he found two Dafa Disciples already beaten down to the floor. Chai Xiaoju was unconscious, and Wang Yinling was being pressed down by a policeman. The father-in-law was pushed aside by the village officials to prevent him from helping his daughter up. Both practitioners were taken away by 9:00 p.m.

The policemen involved in this illegal arrest were Wang Ruiming and Li Haijian, from the Dongshaoqu Police Station. These two have been actively persecuting Falun Gong practitioners since July 20, 1999. Particularly when the local Dafa practitioners were forced to leave home, they have frequently harassed the friends, relatives and families of these practitioners. They use terror to intimidate innocent citizens, openly threatening that, "Guns can be used on Falun Gong; if they are killed, so be it."

Wang and Qi often take other lawless officials from the Township Government, the "610 Office," and the police station, to harass the families of those Dafa practitioners avoiding the persecution by leaving their home. Wang Shan also said: "I will break his leg if I see anyone practicing Falun Gong."

Wu Xianquan and Liang Yarong have been running brainwashing classes in the College of "Governing by Law" Education in Pinggu County. Both of Wu and Liang often verbally insult and physically abuse Dafa practitioners.

[Chengde City, Hebei Province] Policewoman Charged in Death of Practitioner

Latest news from Chengde City Jail where Dafa practitioner Ding Yan was tortured to death: several policewomen beat another female practitioner to death. While being beaten, she "fell" down a flight of stairs. Even so, the perpetrators did not relent, but continued to kick and brutally beat her. This may have been what caused her ruptured bladder. Eventually, the practitioner was found dead in jail. We are not sure about her name. Further investigation is underway.

The practitioner's relatives could not accept the abusive treatment leading to her death, so they complained to the authorities and implicated the policewomen. Finally, the policewoman directly responsible was put under criminal detention and awaits sentencing. Other personnel related to the case were punished. On New Year's Day, practitioners in a certain city collectively stepped forward to distribute truth-clarifying literature, post signs and hang up banners. They clarified the truth and offered salvation to the public. It was said that the truth-clarifying literature went into every home in some of the areas where practitioners distributed flyers, which effectively shocked the evil and awakened the public. Recently, a practitioner heard from an everyday person that he received several truth-clarifying articles. He thought it was very good. Because of this activity, many practitioners were detained. When we thought of how the great sacrifice of these detained practitioners would awaken the conscience of the public, we were too moved to hold back our tears.

On December 25, 2001, female practitioner Song Yufei, approximately 27 years old, disappeared. She holds a Master's degree and works in Beijing's Lianxiang Company.

In December, as a fellow practitioner was detained, Song Yufei decided to resign. She moved and changed her cellular phone number. On December 24, 2001, she made a phone call to her director. The director told her that people from the National Security Department had tracked her as she spread Dafa in "BBS," but the head of the company did not know she was a Falun Gong practitioner. The director suggested that in case others were suspicious of her, she had better go to the company and find a reason to resign "with some procedures." Maybe Song Yufei was tricked this way. She had thought of writing a letter to resign. But on the morning of December 25th she went back to the company to resign. Afterwards, she disappeared. We do not have any information about her yet.

[Dingxing County, Hebei Province] Eliminate the Evil in the Brainwashing Class

The authorities of Dingxing County of Hebei Province set up a brainwashing class to persecute Falun Gong practitioners. The class was in Liyuzhuang Township. The head of the brainwashing class is named Li Ping. The excruciating methods they used on practitioners were similar to those in the Masanjia Forced Labor Camp. Most wardens were trained and had learned the techniques for persecuting and abusing Falun Dafa practitioners. They had just recently been transferred from the army to civilian work. If they could not make practitioners give up the practice, they would not be assigned a job. If they succeeded, they would be rewarded and assigned a good job.

From then on there was "another hell in the world." Even a strong young man could not sustain the intensified military training. The wardens beat practitioners when they ran a little slowly or glanced at others. They shouted the commands rapidly or slowly. If practitioners could not respond immediately, they were beaten. The postures they forced practitioners to assume were all harmful to their health. Even after two days some of them still had difficulty walking. Some could not even straighten up. At night, practitioners were forced to write lies as their so-called "experiences," slander Teacher and Dafa, preach against other practitioners, and enlighten in a wrong way. Practitioners were not allowed to talk with each other. Each practitioner had his/her own warden to watch over him. Practitioners were beaten many times a day.

The wardens were extremely brutal to determined practitioners. In "education class," they tortured practitioners with hot chili sauce [in the eyes and nostrils, for instance], electric batons, handcuffs, shackles, electric chairs, cauterizing instruments, the "death bed" and other methods. Some wardens do not want outsiders to know of their abuse of practitioners. Sometimes, the screams are heard late at night. Practitioners are tortured to the point of developing mental disorders, physical disabilities, becoming black and blue from bruises all over their bodies and being rendered incapable of taking care of themselves. The wardens even threatened practitioners that they would torture to death whoever leaked torture information, knowing that higher officials will not investigate death cases of Falun Gong practitioners. Any who had been released and then divulged information about the torture were detained again. Practitioners were forced to pay 1,000 Yuan [300 Yuan is the average monthly income in rural China] every month for "class expenses." The brainwashing class has lasted for about a year.

On the night of January 1, 2002, policemen from Wenchun Police Station detained female practitioner Li Jingwei, male practitioner Wang Yongmao (both of them are employees in a research institute) and female practitioner Yu Liqun (an employee in an agriculture college) when the practitioners were hanging up banners. Li's husband went to the police station twice to see her, but he was not allowed to visit her. The people from the police station and the agriculture institute said the practitioners were not allowed to sleep for two whole days. Zhao Xianwei: Jail guard; relentlessly and often beat practitioners, verbally and physically abused practitioners, forced the hunger-striking practitioners to stand days and nights without sleeping and had criminal prisoners monitor the practitioners.

Ma Xinglai: Jail guard participated in beating practitioners when he force-fed them.

Jail guard Yan: While on duty, he ordered criminal inmates to physically abuse a practitioner who was on hunger strike. He also yelled, "Bend down (keep the position like 'riding an airplane') if you are not eating."

On November 5, 2001, seven or eight policemen beat practitioner Zhao Qiumei, female, 25 years old, at Tiananmen Square. One of the policemen kicked her private parts so hard that her head was thrown back to hit the wall and she immediately lost consciousness. She woke up after two days with a swollen face, blue and swollen eyes and an injured leg. The policemen who beat her were from the Tiananmen Police Station.

On December 4, 2001, policeman You Hongliang from Jilin City's Industrial Oil Manufacturing Police Station and another unknown policeman violently beat female practitioner Qu Guirong and then ransacked her home.

On November 25, 2001, female practitioner Xu Chunrong unfurled a banner reading "Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance" on the Tiananmen Rostrum. She was sent to the Tiananmen Police Station. Her head was slammed against the wall and she immediately lost consciousness. Policemen did not give up on her, but twice put drops of an unknown drug into her nose, which caused a nosebleed. An abusive policeman stepped on her abdomen and ordered a doctor to inject her with drugs that affected her heart. Her whole body began twitching, she had difficult breathing and was in critical condition.

Spies and insane convicts were sent into the iron cages where practitioners were detained. They attempted to beat practitioners. Practitioners sent forth righteous thoughts and ruined the vicious plot.

Over more than ten days detention, Xu Chunrong did not cooperate with perpetrators no matter where she was, at Beijing's Police Department, the local police department, the detention center or hospital. When she was awake she would always tell policemen to keep in mind that, "Falun Dafa is Great," and the saying, "Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance" and "Good people will be rewarded with a good future." During that time she constantly vomited blood. After December 4 or 5, she lost consciousness, vomited blood, went into convulsions and could not take any food and water. On December 10, at midnight, Xu Chunrong was sent back to her hometown in a local police car. Near death, she is being detained at the No. 3 Detention Center. Her aunt is taking care of her young daughter.

On December 28, 2001 from 11p.m. to 4a.m. the next day, lawless police officers broke into the homes of practitioners Wang Shuzhen, Dong Yunqin, Zhao Yaqin, and Jiang Lide, searching and ransacking the homes. They confiscated a recording device and pocketed some cash stolen from Jiang Lide. They also abducted four practitioners from their homes, including Wang Shuzhen, Dong Yunqin, Liu Shugang and Zhao Yaqin. Wang Shuzhen and Dong Yunqin have been sent to Dehui City's Detention Center and illegally detained them without valid reason.

[Baishan City, Jilin Province] Multiple Arrests of Practitioners by Personnel from Baishan City's Political, Legal and Police Departments

On the evening of December 31, 2001, when the whole world was celebrating the New Year, officers of Baishan City's Police Department duped practitioner Yang Jingwei, a 29-year-old university graduate/computer specialist, into going to his work unit, the Hunjiang Power Plant, with the excuse of "having a party," and afterward kidnapped him and transported him into a detention center for persecution. The practitioner was just back from visiting relatives in his hometown, Liaoyuan City in Jilin Province.

Around December 29, 2001, enforcers from Baishan City's Forced Labor Camp collaborated with people from the Hongqi Police Station in Badaojiang District. They deceived an elderly practitioner, Yao Xucai, who had been released but was still under surveillance, to return to the labor camp under the pretense of "As the situation at year's end is very serious, you are required to stay in the labor camp for a couple more days." The next day, they hastily and secretly sent Yao to the Chaoyanggou Forced Labor Camp in Changchun City. Yao Xucai is 65 years old and is a determined practitioner. There are more than a dozen people in his family who cultivate Dafa.

On the evening of December 31, 2001, authorities from the National Security Bureau of Baishan City abducted female practitioner Jing Xiaohong to a detention center and tortured her. Jing Xiaohong, 33 years old, is a university graduate. She holds a resident registration card from Dalian City and used to work in Beijing. She came back to Baishan City to visit her relatives on New Year's Day. At present, Yang Jingwei and Jing Xiaohong are staging a hunger strike in Baishan City's Detention Center to protest the unlawful persecution. Today is their sixth day.

[Hegang City, Heilongjiang Province] Persistent Arrest of Dafa Practitioners at the Hands of People from Hegang City's Police Department

At 4:00 p.m. on January 5, 2002, practitioner Liu Xia, who before July 22^nd, 1999 was a clothing cutter at "Great World" and a former volunteer assistant director, was arrested by a lawless police officer from the Shengli Police Station. She and her relatives' homes were ransacked. The villains didn't find anything they could utilize.

Even though Liu Xia displayed symptoms of convulsion at the police station, the policemen didn't let her go. They sent her to a hospital, kept her there for one day and then, after she recovered, sent her to No.2 Detention Center. Her husband is also a practitioner and was forced to leave home to avoid persecution. Her son, who had just entered junior middle school, is also watched by the police and is now being taken care of by their relatives.

Practitioner Deng Aimin, female, from the Xinnan District of Hegang City did truth-clarifying work and was arrested by policemen waiting on spot. They directly sent her to the No.2 Detention Center.

Practitioner Du Guijie worked at the Injection Room on 5^th floor of Hegang City's Hospital. S/he clarified the truth to the patients who came there. A vile person reported the practitioner to the police. Around New Year's Day that practitioner was put into the No.2 Detention Center.

A while ago, a practitioner in Hegang City was illegally sentenced to 6 years of forced labor for distributing Dafa truth-clarifying materials. The police officers even claimed, "Once caught, whoever distributes truth-clarifying materials will be sentenced to 3 years (forced labor)."

(Clearwisdom.net) On June 7, 2000, before dawn at 2 in the morning, Section Chief Ma Kai and more than 10 policemen from the public security section of Haikou Municipal Police Station illegally ransacked Fan Qifan's home. Fan is a Falun Gong practitioner working at the Hainan Normal University. Although Fan Qifan resisted them with every effort, in the end she and her nine-year-old son were arrested and sent to the Municipal Police Station. That night, the public security system of Haikou city carried out a large-scale raid on local Dafa practitioners. Many practitioners were arrested, detained and several were sentenced to 3 years at a forced labor camp. Fan Qifan had sent a letter to a human rights organization revealing the fact that four Dafa practitioners from Hainan had been brutally tortured before being sentenced to jail during the Geneva United Nations human rights conference. She was herself sentenced to 3 years at a forced labor camp as a result. She is being held in the Hainan Provincial Female Labor Camp suffering severe and brutal torture.

Her child's father had abandoned them when her son was just a baby, so her son became a helpless orphan after Fan was arrested. The Hainan Provincial Female Labor Camp sent her son to one of the welfare centers in Haikou City. He lived in a soundless world with a group of deaf-mute children and widowed seniors. Her son's childish heart has been ruined. He has become silent, his face looking as grim and stiff as ice and frost. He scans every person around him with chilly looks. The child tried several times to escape but was not successful. Helplessly, he could only stay there for more than two months. When the new semester began, his school, the elementary school at Hainan Normal University, was not willing to take responsibility for him and would not allow him to register. The Hainan Provincial Female Labor Camp thus sent him to a private school. They blocked any information about the child and would not allow any practitioner to visit him.

During an afternoon of the mid-autumn festival in 2000, a practitioner tried very hard and finally discovered the child's whereabouts. She went to the school and asked the teacher how the child was doing. What the teacher said shocked the practitioner. The teacher said: "The child is very weird. He never speaks, nor plays with his classmates. He cannot concentrate in class and his eyes are always blank. No one has picked him up to go home since the semester started, nor did anyone come to visit him". It is so sad that an originally good student of good character, a bright and clever child has turned out this way in such a short period of time!

The practitioner took the child home for the weekend. After a while, the child started to show a willingness to talk. And moreover, when he talked, he kept talking until one o'clock in the morning and was not willing to go to sleep. Seeing him so excited, the practitioner urged him to go to sleep. But the child said: "Aunty, I have not talked for a few months, and now I only talk with you. I don't want to talk with other people, because they are all very bad. I dare not go to sleep, because in my dreams, the police arrest me and throw me on the roadside. So I'm very afraid." Looking at the lovely child who had been tortured so badly, the practitioner called the duty officers of the first squad of the Hainan Provincial Female Labor Camp to earnestly ask permission for the child to spend weekends with her, but the Labor Camp representative was actually surprised and asked in reply, "Who gave you permission to take the child home today?" The next day, when the practitioner took the child back to school, the teacher told her, "Someone from the Provincial Female Labor Camp came here last night to demand that no one be allowed to take the child away"! The child's mom was illegally sentenced to a forced labor camp, but the child is innocent. Why is it not even permitted for some kind-hearted people to take care of the child!

Later, after extensive negotiations, Guo Yegui, a Dafa practitioner from Hainan, adopted the poor child. However, right before China's National Day (Oct. 1), 2001, Guo's whole family was illegally detained because they continued cultivating Falun Dafa. The child once again became an orphan. Now, from Monday to Friday, the child lives at Guo's home, alone. He washes his clothes by himself, cooks his own meals and cleans the apartment. On the weekend, a practitioner takes him to her home and takes care of him. All the child needs is provided by practitioners. The society does not give him any help. Although the child is lonely and feels scared, he is happy that he is not at the orphanage. The Provincial Female Labor Camp has prevented the child from seeing his mom for nearly eight months because his mom has not given up her practice!

A nine-year-old boy needs constant care and constant looking after, but he encounters this horrible, horrible situation simply because his mother is following "Truthfulness, Compassion, Tolerance." He even lost his right to see his mother! What will the brutal reality and the evil persecution leave in the heart of this innocent child? What this child has encountered is a small example of the sufferings other Falun Dafa practitioners and their families have endured, persecuted for upholding the truth.

A family in Yitong County, Jilin Province started their practice of Falun Dafa in the beginning of 1996. All members of this family firmly believe in Dafa.

Sometime after July 20, 1999, the entire family was investigated by the Police Department because they went to the government of Jilin Province and Beijing to petition. The police went to their home many times to threaten and intimidate the elderly lady. They slapped the table and told her: "You are an anti-revolutionary!" The elderly lady could not stand the policemen's threats and got sick in the beginning of September. On September 20^th, the police department illegally detained her youngest daughter, simply because she did not give up Falun Gong. The elderly lady passed away on September 25^th. The day after her death, the company of the daughter who was detained made a wonderful effort under the circumstances, and wrote a guarantee letter, plus, her family submitted 500 Yuan as a deposit (Translator's note: an average urban worker's monthly salary is about 500 Yuan). The police department finally allowed the daughter to go back home and see her mother. She had only spent three hours at home before she was sent back to the detention center. She was not allowed to attend the funeral. The day following the funeral, the police took the son and daughter-in-law of the deceased away and illegally detained them as well. The three were released on October 11^th and fined 500 Yuan.

Shortly after the family's reunion on October 25^th, they heard that Jiang was slandering Falun Dafa and trying to determine Dafa's legal status, so the whole family of nine adults and one child went to Beijing to appeal. When seven of them were arrested on October 27^th, policeman Fu confiscated 2,900 Yuan from the father and his son. Together with the money extorted from others, a total of 3,200 Yuan was taken from them. Fu did not use any legal procedures, but told them that he was going to help them take care of the money. On November 1^st, they again arrested the daughter, the son-in-law and a grandson who was less than three years old. They also illegally took 2,030 Yuan from them without any legal procedures.

After they returned to their hometown, all of them were illegally held in a detention center and a custodial center, where they suffered various degrees of personal injury due to the policemen's beatings. After a while, due to the fact that this entire family firmly continued to practice Falun Dafa, eight of them were sent to a labor camp. Only one of the elderly lady's sons-in-law and a grandson have been released. Before their release, only a teenage granddaughter remained at home, and she was forced to live with a relative.

Police officers abducted practitioners Yang Xianfeng (female, 48, laid off), Xu Ying (female, in her 30s, railroad worker), Deng Tianyu (female, 52, retired, former worker at a botanical garden), Dai Tangfu (female, in her 40s, an accountant at the Agricultural Science Institute) and others from their homes and detained them in a quiet and isolated hotel called "Hawk Crown Village," located inside Zhongshan Park in Shashi District. There, the police enforcers tortured the practitioners for 9 days and nights. The police authorities feared exposure of their unspeakable atrocities, but they had turned the small hotel, surrounded by graceful scenery, into a place of terror. During those 9 days and nights, officers from No.1 Section of the district police department did not allow the practitioners to sleep, wear shoes, sit down, close their eyes or even have a moment's rest. The henchmen took turns abusing, beating and torturing the practitioners around-the-clock. They cuffed the practitioners' hands behind their backs and brutally beat the victims while suspending them in the air. Even worse, the police even poured hot-spicy pepper juice into the practitioners' eyes and wounds, followed by close exposure to fire and smoke. That was not enough. They even stuck burning cigarettes into the practitioners' nostrils. Afraid the hotel personnel might be alarmed by the practitioners' screams, the police stuffed practitioners' mouths with towels, and then covered them with quilts before they began the violent beating and kicking. After they collapsed to the floor from the beating, the police jumped on the quilt-wrapped practitioners and began stomping on them. When the female practitioners asked to go to the bathroom, two male police officers dragged them there. During 9 days of torture the practitioners became unconscious numerous times. Several times, Yang Xianfeng's arm and shoulder joint(s) were dislocated, and eventually fractured from beatings. Deng Tianyu lost sight in one eye from the severe torture.

Nine days of inhuman torture failed to bend the practitioners' minds. Later, they were transferred to a detention center where they held an 11-day group hunger strike to resist the evil, insist on the Truth and safeguard Dafa. Zhang Congjin, a prison guard at Jingzhou Ximen Detention Center and others force-fed the practitioners to torture them. They pulled out one of Yang Xianfeng's front teeth with a pair of pliers. Later, this malicious Zhang Congjin brutally pulled out two more of Yang's front teeth. She bled severely and her clothes were soaked with blood. She eventually passed out from the excruciating pain. There are so many horrific things like these took place during the practitioners' nine months of detention.

In December 14, 2001, these same practitioners were taken to a courtroom and convicted. When they appeared, it could be clearly seen that their bodies were covered with scars. Police officers carried the semi-conscious Yang Xianfeng into the courtroom. Deng Tianyu's loss of sight in her left eye has affected her right eye. She looked completely disfigured. However, the Dafa practitioners' minds have become even more indestructible. In the courtroom, they denounced the evil's brutal persecution, clarified the truth and praised Dafa. Xu Ying shouted loudly in the end, "Falun Dafa is good; Falun Dafa is the righteous Fa," and they all demanded unconditional release. During the so-called "public trial," the government didn't allow any non-involved people to enter the courtroom. The judge hastily sentenced Yang Xianfeng to 4 years in prison; Xu Ying, Dai Tangfu, Deng Tianyu and others to 3 years in prison, without any proper legal procedures. However, all practitioners refused to sign the "Verdict Statement."

In addition, practitioners Chen Jingjiang (female, in her 50s, retired), Liu Yazhen (female, in her 40s, laid off) and Chen Youhong (female, in her 30s, a bank worker) were tortured for seven days straight and illegally sentenced to four years in prison in February 2001, simply because they wrote a jointly signed letter to the local police department in which they clarified that Dafa is the righteous law and their reasons for making truth-clarifying materials.

Aside from physical abuse, police puppets at Jingzhou City Police Department also extorted money from the practitioners. Without exception, every practitioner was fined from several thousand to tens of thousands of Yuan. Most of these "fines" were not officially recorded. In Jingzhou City, many practitioners lost all their belongings and money and were forced to beg in the streets. Even those who stayed at home were fired and had to live on their meager savings. All these practitioners are in an extremely difficult situation. Not long ago, another 23 practitioners were arrested and brutally tortured to extract confessions from them. On December 28, 2001, all police units from the Jingzhou Police Department took off on a mission to illegally search homes of practitioners and harass them. The enforcers confiscated practitioners' properties. Especially in Shashi District, a large number of practitioners were arrested. An atmosphere of terror surrounded the entire Shashi District. Details are under further investigation.

We call for the attention of all kind-hearted people about these heart-wrenching atrocities committed against Dafa practitioners in Jingzhou City, Hubei Province. We call for benevolent practitioners around the world to send righteous thoughts and eradicate the evil!

(Clearwisdom.net) Ms. Xiu (alias) is a Dafa practitioner about 60 years of age. She never yielded to the inhuman harassment, electric shocks and other forms of cruel torture while in the forced labor camp. Even when she was tortured and was left in critical condition, she still said, "I will not give in even if you shock me another 1,000 times with the electric baton."

Ms. Xiu was released after being illegally detained for one year and forty days. Since she came back, she has never rested for even one day. She stays in touch with other practitioners, and every day she makes the best use of her time to study the Fa, read Teacher's new articles and other articles on the Dafa web sites. Her rational understanding of the Fa constantly improves. At one time when she was sharing experiences with other practitioners, she said, "I enlightened that Teacher arranged for me to be released so that I can keep my promise of saving people." The following stories describe how she clarified the truth to the everyday people in society recently.

One day when she was distributing the truth-clarifying materials in a building, somebody saw her through the viewer on the door and opened a small window in the steel security door. [Translator's note: In many places of China, robbery is so common that many apartments have an extra door made of steel bars to guard against burglars] Ms. Xiu said calmly, "I'm distributing Falun Gong truth-clarifying materials. May I give you one?" The person in the room said, "Yes." Ms. Xiu handed one copy over and that person said, "Thank you!" Ms. Xiu continued to distribute the materials from one household to another. While she was delivering them, a lady behind her asked, "What are you distributing?" Ms. Xiu said, smiling, "Falun Gong truth-clarifying literature." The lady said, "Can you give me a copy?" Ms. Xiu said, handing it to her, "Please read it carefully. Dafa is saving you!" The lady also smiled, "Thank you!"

One day as she was carrying a tub of glue to paste up flyers that read, "Falun Dafa is Good," a gentleman came close to her while making a call on his cell phone. He looked at the flyer carefully and said, "Falun Dafa is Good! Falun Dafa is Good!" Ms. Xiu then said, "Yes. Falun Dafa is Good!" The gentleman took a look at Ms. Xiu and exclaimed, "This Falun Gong is truly terrific!"

One day when she was carrying the tub of glue and determining the best place to paste fliers, an old lady came out and asked, "What are you doing?" Ms. Xiu said, "I want to post this flier which says, 'Falun Dafa is a Righteous Fa.'" Then Ms. Xiu started to clarify the truth to the old lady. This time the old lady understood and said, "Take good care of yourself. Don't let them catch you." Ms. Xiu said, "Don't be afraid. We're all good people. Pasting the flier up will let people know that Dafa is good so that they will be saved." The old lady said in reply, "Then paste it up! Paste it up!!"

On another day, as Ms. Xiu was daubing the glue onto a wall, a young lady came over and asked what Ms. Xiu was doing. Ms. Xiu said, "I want to paste fliers that say, 'Falun Dafa is Good' and 'Restore the Reputation of Dafa.'" The lady said, "You must be very careful. Don't let them catch you. There was a Falun Gong practitioner in Shanghai who was distributing these materials and got caught. They tortured her badly and denied her sleep for quite a few days and nights. They beat her very cruelly." Ms. Xiu said, "I know. I just came out of prison a month ago. Because I cultivated firmly and did not give in, you can see how I was beaten by the police." Saying this Ms. Xiu showed her the many scars on her body. She then said, "Coercion cannot change people's hearts. The true Dafa cultivators are all very firm. Nobody will give up cultivating the most precious Dafa." As the girl listened to Ms. Xiu, who was so kind and whose words so moving, her face revealed her deep respect. She told Ms. Xiu, "This is my house. Please paste up your flier here!"

Ms. Xiu smiled. She smiled for all those lives that can be saved.

Greetings Teacher! Greetings fellow practitioners!

My mother and I attained the Fa on February 6, 1996. Whenever people ask me what the happiest moment in my life was, I always think about this moment for which I have waited tens of thousands of years. I recalled Teacher's words, "Those who really have a predestined relationship and can enlighten will come one after another, entering the Dao and obtaining the Fa. They will distinguish the righteous from the evil, obtain true teachings, lighten their bodies, enhance their wisdom, enrich their hearts, and board the boat of the Fa, sailing smoothly. How wonderful! Strive forward with every effort until Consummation." ("Enlightenment," Essentials for Further Advancement)

Looking back over the past 6 years, my cultivation path seems to have been just a transient moment. As cultivators, we surpass everyday people's sentiments, but we also have tribulations in our cultivation paths that help us upgrade our levels, as well as the joy and amazement of different levels after we have passed various tests. It is the Teacher's great benevolence that enables me to "be calm and unperturbed amidst the tribulation." It is the Teacher's strengthening that enables me to sail lightly and fast. The tribulations and understandings in the past appear to be trifles now, yet I would like to take this opportunity to share with you some of my recent enlightenment in Dafa. I hope that fellow practitioners could kindly point out anything inappropriate, so that we could improve together.

From personal cultivation to cultivation in the Fa rectification period, from passive endurance to eliminating evil with righteous minds, the Fa rectification process pushes us to advance earnestly straight forward, especially recently. Practitioners overseas are clarifying the truth with all means. Practitioners in China proclaimed "Changchun Falun Dafa Day" despite the huge pressure of the persecution. One by one, marvelous scenarios in this human dimension unfold. This is the opening of our wisdom which we are using to validate Dafa and clarify the truth from various aspects.

While we were in the stage of personal cultivation, we saw the corruption of human society, and when we look back we recognize that it was in great danger. I tried to be a cultivator living in a clean and quiet environment, eliminating my attachments. I also knew clearly that human beings in the future would definitely be not like this. I knew that I would reach consummation and return together with Teacher, and the human world would enter the best historic period after the Fa rectification. However, I never thought that I myself would be involved in this history-making period.

When the Fa rectification entered this stage, my wisdom consequently was opened to this level following the dramatic changes in the colossal firmament. As we will cultivate to be great enlightened beings, as we are the pure guardians of the Fa, as we are the practitioners for the Lord of Buddhas and have the great fortune of "assisting Teacher in the human world," a chance that even all the gods and Buddhas would envy, we have to let this period of "human and divine beings co-existing in the human world" shine in its best purity and glory. Dafa created all levels of the universe, including the human level. I realized that in the human society, we should manifest ourselves as the people that best fit the standard of the Fa at this level--the people that best fit the characteristics of cosmos--"Truth, Compassion, and Forbearance." The current standard of human society is distorted, no longer living up to the standard of true Law at this level. The lifestyles of human beings after the Fa rectification will be the true way of living as provided by Dafa. Therefore, before the Fa rectification reaches the human level, I should try my best to explain my understanding of "Truth, Compassion, and Forbearance" at the human level to people using the means that are acceptable to them and words that they can understand. Helping people to return to their original nature is also a manifestation of protecting the Fa at this level.

Not being attached to human culture does not mean that we are not able to appreciate or utilize human culture, and certainly not avoiding even talking about it. The less we are attached to it, the more we are able to surpass it, and the easier we are able to "use at will" the things that are at lower levels. Everything should be within the great freedom that we enlighten to. Teacher said: "In other words, I'm telling you that many situations aren't without a reason. Everything in the world came for this Dafa, was formed for Dafa, and was created for Dafa." ("Lecture on the Fa at the Washington, D.C. International Conference") Teacher also said, "Actually, what a Tathagata means by 'emptiness' is being free from every ordinary human attachment. Non-omission is the true essence of emptiness. To begin with, the universe exists because of matter and is composed of and remains as matter. How could it be empty?" ("What is emptiness?" Essentials for Further Advancement). The Universe itself is of vast variety and grand beauty. Since Teacher has given us the holy mission of creating the future, I shall try to use the wisdom of great ease in my realm to clarify the truth and save human beings.

Recently, I decided to switch my college major to media communications. After I applied, I realized that my TOEFL score did not meet the admission requirements. However, I thought that Dafa created everything at every level and everything today has been formed for Dafa. It is a university's blessing to be able to play a role in clarifying the truth. Therefore, I strengthened my righteous mind and wrote an essay to the university. On the surface, I was demonstrating my English level and seeking admission. In fact, this was based on the principle of "Truth, Compassion, and Forbearance" and to introduce Dafa to this University. A few days later, the director of the admissions office called me for an interview. I took some news footage that I recently made promoting Dafa in my current college. I played the program to the professors during the interview. I told them that I knew that this program was far from perfect but that I only wanted to show them my strong interest in this area. Just two days later, I received a letter of acceptance from this university for January 2002 admission. The major is Visual Media in media communications. My mother could hardly believe it upon receiving the letter. However I knew it. As long as it is needed for the Fa rectification rather than for personal interests, we Falun Dafa practitioners can attain whatever we want. To Falun Dafa practitioners, the future Buddhas, Taos, and gods, there is nothing that we can't accomplish now. Teacher said: "When it's difficult to endure, you can endure it" (Zhuan Falun). It all depends on whether we can enlighten to it, whether our actions are based on the Fa, and whether we have powerful righteous minds and pure enlightenment. Teacher said in the article, "What Are Supernormal Abilities," "For instance, while doing Fa-rectification, when the righteous thoughts are very pure, their [practitioners] supernormal abilities are comprehensively utilized. Moreover, with righteous thoughts in their minds many disciples are able to use them at will--whatever they want to use, they almost always have it."

Based on my current understanding, I think that everything belongs to Dafa. Now, Dafa practitioners are using their wisdom, given by Dafa, to create a new future, a wonderful future. We are Dafa particles and we are also one body. We are utilizing all kinds of human means to clarify the truth to people. Let us together with our fellow practitioners in China welcome the moment when the whole universe will be celebrating together!

With deep appreciation of Teacher!

It has been less than a year since I began my Falun Dafa cultivation. In the past few months I joined in efforts to spread Dafa [hongfa] and Fa-rectification activities. I was in a passive mode when I performed my duties. I was a follower, doing what was needed during large-scale hongfa activities and a casual participant in smaller scale activities. I felt obligated to participate, so I participated, but I primarily assisted others. I failed to realize that hongfa is my responsibility as a practitioner. Since I did not like to use any formality to hongfa, I had been working as a loner and separated myself from the entire process of Fa-rectification. Now, I would like to talk about my understanding of media communications and also to share my cultivation experience creating a literary project, which could be a reference for other practitioners. Please offer your suggestions to improve my work. á

1. Create opportunities to approach the media to our advantage.á

My husband and I often discuss about how to hongfa more efficiently. We also feel that our hongfa activities fall into a format, which isolate the practitioners from the ordinary people around us. Although practitioners have tried many ways to open up the channels to approach the media, the media has not yet been brought into full play. Many ordinary people are exposed to Falun Dafa in parades and flyers we hand out. As a media saying goes: "You have to chase the news, and make a piece of news into the media focus." In modern society, the media spreads information. In order to approach the media effectively, we must first clarify the truth of Falun Dafa to the media professionals. This is because the government does not control the media in western countries. Take newspapers as an example. Each paper has its own policy, and every story it runs, regardless of its length, represents its own intention and opinion. Thus, we have to be in touch with the media no matter whether it is a headline or local news. These people are very important. They have their cluster of readers and viewers that favor their articles and programs. Once these important media people understand the righteousness of Falun Dafa in their minds, they will spread the Fa positively. This will be a crucial breakthrough. But how can we spread the Fa to them effectively? I don't think we lack any advantage. We can organize a special team to contact people in the literary and artistic fields and to explore new approaches to get to know people working in the media. We can produce video programs on specific topics, report practitioners' achievements in the fields of science and technology and reveal their lives as Falun Dafa practitioners. The report on practitioners' achievements would enable ordinary people to understand how the practitioners regard success in their careers and how they lead their lives outside their work. Kindhearted people will be inspired by hearing of a new way of life and renewed moral standards.

Let me tell you about something that is happening. We can discuss it and share our ideas and opinions. á

Our daughter won a prize in a children's picture book coloring contest held by a Chinese newspaper. We took her to accept the prize on the weekend. After the ceremony, my husband and I wanted to talk with the staff of the Chinese newspaper and show our appreciation for sponsoring the contest. We were so fortunate because the people we spoke with were the owner and Chief Editor. While my husband discussed some issues about the newspaper's business operations with the owner, I spoke with the Chief Editor about the format on the special column of the newspaper. The Chief Editor spoke about how Chinese people had promoted Chinese culture through the newspaper while I spoke about my interest in traditional Chinese culture and ways to introduce it to western society through schools and other social organizations. I gradually led our discussion from westerners' interest in Chinese culture to their interest in studying Falun Gong. In the end, I spoke about their concern of the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China. The Editor-In-Chief showed a strong interest. My husband also expressed his opinion on the future of news reporting and newspapers and provided the newspaper with reliable news sources. We had a very good conversation with them. The Editor-In-Chief remarked that my husband's ideas were so fresh and his thoughts so clear that she would like to invite him to be the paper's consultant! I was so happy, not because he was offered this position, but because of the things we could do to promote Dafa if the position were to materialize. The Chief Editor also said that she wanted to interview me. I gave her some information about a local community group I knew that had an interest in Chinese culture. I was sure she would learn a lot about the situation in China from the western people, especially about the persecution of Falun Gong once she interviewed that group. I believe the viewpoint on China from western people would sound more attractive to the readers than that expressed by me, a Chinese. They were delighted to hear about our soon to be published novel. They had been looking for a writer from Mainland China in Florida for a newspaper function. Now they had found one without much effort. They immediately invited us to the function. My husband and I smiled at each other because we knew that it would be a wonderful opportunity to hongfa. Even though we did not tell the editor directly that we were practitioners, we took the opportunity to clarify the truth from an angle that they could accept. From this experience, I feel that the more naturally we behave, the easier the job arranged by Master Li is done. That is simply the power of Dafa. á

2. Do not neglect individual cultivation practice while doing hongfa worká

Now, Let me talk about how I practice cultivation along with my work in literature.á

Master Li mentioned in his article: "Path," "A cultivator has no role models. The path each person take is different..." I understood that Dafa created my life, so I should fully play my role as a particle in Dafa. Since the path each person takes is different, the duties each person has are also different. How could I put myself to best use according to my own abilities? How could I devote myself to the process of the Fa-rectification? This is the way Fa-rectification disciples should think.

I'm not a professional writer, nor have I had any professional training. My work in literature originates from the experiences in my life. Since I became a practitioner, I have seen and felt Dafa's power and glory. Although I do not outwardly show much enthusiasm and passion, I have experienced the rebirth of my body and spirit in Dafa. What Falun Dafa practitioners have done in their cultivation touches me and inspires me every moment, which is also the source of my literary work.

The trip to Geneva this past March deeply moved me. The rain in Geneva gave me the framework for my screenplay. I have never produced a screenplay before. That rainy day in Geneva made me determined to create one. The image of practitioners meditating in the rain is in my mind constantly. I understood the unparalleled artistic effect of such a film and that it would be unparalleled in effectively promoting the Fa. Art comes from real life and refines real life. A masterpiece is not written by hand, but by heart. I started writing the screenplay with the above ideas.á

I collected a large amount of materials from the Minghui website and from a veteran Chinese practitioner who happened to live near me. I learned a lot of what has been happening from her. I learned how practitioners' understandings and the situation of Falun Dafa in China have changed and shifted. Now I could objectively reveal the real people and their real thoughts in my play. Only realistic content can offer real value and create a masterpiece.

After the first step was finished, my husband borrowed many books about screenplay writing from the library for me to read. He asked me to write in Hollywood style. It gave me a big headache when I read those books. I realized that I couldn't read them anymore. First, my English is not very good, so it would take me forever to read them. Second, I couldn't follow the format. Third, I had no intention and desire to please the audience with the fast and emotionally provocative scenes depicted nowadays in movies. My passion to be a playwright stems from Dafa and what I want to manifest precisely is the portrayal of what Dafa has brought to people. I'm writing with my heart, not my hand. After I sorted out these issues, I threw away any existing formats that could only limit my writing and began writing as it came to me naturally.

The writing came even smoother than I had expected. When I fully devoted myself to the writing, the project became even easier and smoother. The continual pieces coming forth from my mind gave me the confidence to finish it. I understand that it is not due to my individual talent and ability, but from the strength I have received from beyond my own capability. Who gave me the passion to produce the play? Who propelled me with a brave heart to take on the job? I was fully aware the project did not belong to me, but to Dafa. Using wisdom from Dafa, I am able to depict positive and negative sides of human nature in my play, uplifting morality and revealing the truth.

After the screenplay was done, I felt relief and a sense of freedom. I thought it was time to publish it. Attachments to fame, self-interest and the pursuit of success sprouted in my heart. I had a strong desire to publish the work as soon as possible, but it was strange that I couldn't find any practitioner to work with me on publishing it. I was disappointed and unsatisfied with others. When this attachment emerged, my project suffered and no further progress was made. I spoke with some practitioners and exchanged differing views. I realized that I was in the middle of a xinxing test. In each conflict with others, I was only searching outwardly for the faults and shortcoming of others instead of searching for my attachments. Cultivating my own heart is the right way in cultivation practice! After I relinquished my attachment to personal success and achievement, many problems were solved immediately in a smooth manner.

Now, I am no longer attached to my own so-called achievement. I only think of how to do well steadfastly. I tell myself: don't wait, don't rely on others, do whatever I can. With this mentality, my mind is even more open than before. After the project is completed, I will look for help from others. After the lyrics were finished, I didn't mind when I couldn't find a composer. So, I feel even more relaxed and free with my creativity. Practitioners from other states said pushing me to do something was no longer the case, but the other way around. I really appreciated the encouragement practitioners gave me in each step of my cultivation. The encouragement enabled me to change from a passive practitioner to an active one in promoting Dafa to others. This is part of the process whereby Dafa practitioners improve themselves as a whole. á

Policemen in Changchun City found hydrogen balloons with Dafa sayings on October 27, 2001. As one of the policemen tried to fit a hydrogen balloon into the trunk of his car, the balloon popped and burst into flames. Fire spread to his face quickly, and he screamed with pain. His skin peeled off as he touched his face, and his hair turned yellowish from the burn.

Da Biao publicly slandered Dafa. He would not listen even when he was told about the consequences. The following evening when he turned on the light, the light bulb exploded and injured his chest.

Huang Long Corp. in Gongzhulin City was eager to please the evil and dismissed one of its employees who is a practitioner. The company had a very bad year in 2001 and lost more than 1 million Yuan [the monthly salary for an average Chinese urban worker is about 500 Yuan].

Policeman Tai Fenghua from Dongsan Police Station in Gongzhulin City arrested a practitioner visiting a hospital and sent him to a detention center. As Tai was about to arrest another practitioner, she was caught with drugs and detained.

[Clearwisdom.net] Recently, there have been frequent media reports of explosions, food poisoning, arson, truck accidents, etc. in many places in Mainland China. Whenever I hear such reports, my heart sinks because, through cultivation of Falun Dafa, we understand that there are no events of this human world that are accidental, but rather, everything has its cause and effect.

Currently, the gravest injustice of Chinese history is occurring. That is, the dictator Jiang and his ilk are persecuting the innocent people who believe in "Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance." For two years, the leaders of the current regime have repeatedly fabricated lurid lies to demonize Falun Gong and torture practitioners to death. So far, at least 343 practitioners have died while in police custody. The evil persecutors, with Falun Dafa practitioners' blood on their hands, are committing sins so immense that they can never be redeemed.

It is a law of the cosmos that doing good deeds is met with good rewards, and being evil is met with evil returns. Jiang is going against the universal cosmic law and has brought about never-ending disasters to the Chinese people.

Beijing has reached the apex of flu season.

During the New Year holidays, the number of flu patient cases in the large Beijing hospitals soared higher than fifty percent over the previous year. Beijing Municipal Hygiene and Preventive Health Station proclaimed that the height of the flu season has arrived. Children's hospitals have seen the most flu patients. An emergency room doctor in the Beijing Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital commented that this year's flu strain has extremely strong symptoms, and that the usual flu medications, fever relievers and antibiotics are not very effective against it.

Boiler tank explosion in Guangxi Province leaves seven dead, 23 injured.

On the afternoon of December 29, at Shizhai Township, in Yulinrong County, a boiler tank exploded. Seven people died at the scene and twenty-three were injured, two critically.

A huge blaze suddenly ignited at a fast food restaurant, leaving seven dead and five critically injured.

At 5:40 a.m. on December 27, a Luolin fast food restaurant on Dongseng Street in the Luo Hu District of Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province, suddenly caught fire, leaving seven dead and five critically injured. The case is currently under investigation.

Fifty-one people suffer food poisoning at a Kunming City textile plant.

On December 29, in Plants No.2 and No.3 of the Yunnan Honghua Textile Company, in Kunming City, Yunnan Province, fifty-one people suffered food poisoning. The case is currently under investigation. (Xinhuanet.com)

Suicide explosion in Hubei Province kills man and two police escorts.

Chinese police announced that in Zhongxiang City, Hubei Province, a male suspect detonated a bomb that was hidden on his body, causing a suicidal explosion that also killed the two policemen who were escorting him. This is the most recent in a series of explosions in China.

Seriously polluted Yangtze River is becoming undrinkable. The National Congress of China is deeply concerned.

December 27, Beijing -- Currently, many cities along the Yangtze River cannot find water that is clean enough to meet public health standards. Shanghai and Chongqing are suffering from shortages of safe drinking water. According to statistics, there should currently be about five hundred spots along the Yangtze River where safe drinking water should be found. However, all of those spots have become polluted to some degree. (China News.net)

Multiple truck wreck in Zhugeer Qi, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, leaves five dead.

About 4:00 a.m. on December 26, on the Huanghe Bridge of Lamawan in Zhugeer Qi, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, two freight trucks collided, causing three other trucks that were following to collide with the first two. Truck No.142 and its driver were thrown into the Yellow River. The initial investigation revealed five dead. (Xinhuanet.com)

Do not disregard the rampant persecution around you.

As Falun Gong practitioners, we are painfully watching what is happening. We must call upon everyone: Please do not disregard the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners around you.

"I can tell you, all of the natural and man-made disasters that have been happening in Mainland China are already warnings for the sins the beings there have committed against Dafa. For the sake of relatives and friends, and for one's own sake, stopping the evil forces from persecuting and murdering Falun Gong practitioners is the most urgent task at hand. Understand the principle of how doing good deeds is met with good rewards, and being evil is met with evil returns. For your own future and the future of all sentient beings, please treat Falun Gong well!

A policeman in a city in Southern China took several Dafa practitioners to the police station because someone who didn't know the truth of Dafa had reported them. Once there, however, the policeman gave back the Dafa truth-clarifying materials he had confiscated and told them, "Don't let other people see you next time when you do such things. Leave here now as soon as you can." Recently, this policeman was awarded the third grade merit award for outstanding work performance.

Officials in Beitai Town, Benxi City, Liaoning Province, closely followed the orders of Jiang's evil gang to arrest Dafa practitioners and suffered immediate retribution. The local adaptor factory caught fire and burned the community office down to ashes. While the police attempted to take down a banner that practitioners had pasted to the wall with mud, a big chunk of the mud fell onto the police car. People who watched the fun nearby said, "You might lose your life if you insist on taking down the banner." The police left in frustration.

The Mayor of Huadian City, Heilongjiang Province, Yang Shundong, made efforts to assist Jiang in persecuting Falun Gong. Early in 2001 he was dismissed from his post for a death case and some economic problems. The Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee in Huadian City, Xu Benjin, arrested Falun Gong practitioners and sent them to detention, forced-labor and prison so as to please his superiors. During the Chinese New Year of 2001, Xu Benjin's son, who is a college student, had a brain hemorrhage.

Deputy Secretary of Politics and Law Committee and Director of "610" office of Huadian City, Heilongjiang Province, Zhou Jian, arrested Falun Gong practitioners and sent them to forced-labor camps. Zhou received retribution recently. His finger was fractured for no apparent reason so he had to take injections everyday. The Deputy Secretary of Transportation Bureau, Qu Linxiang, persecuted a Dafa practitioner in his employ, Ms. Li Wanhong. He suffered another stroke and his condition worsened, so he was hospitalized.

Liu Diange, a driver at the detention center of Huadian City, Heilongjiang Province, was against Dafa. His wife was a cook at the detention center and she always mistreated Dafa practitioners. In 2001 his wife had a stroke and suffered paralysis of the arms and legs. She could not work any more and the whole family got into trouble. The security guard of a residential building, Ding Jitai, turned in Dafa practitioners distributing truth-clarifying materials. Two days later, the tomb of his family was secretly dug-up and violated.

Gaoyang Labor Camp of Hebei Province was notorious for the brutal persecution of Dafa practitioners. Those in charge committed many crimes. According to informed people in local legal circles, the director, deputy director, various team leaders and many policemen from the Gaoyang Labor Camp have been investigated because they were suspected of illegally releasing some criminals, accepting bribes and other corruption. Several people have been detained while the investigation continues.

Wang Dejun from Xiayao Village of Zhuanghe City, Liaoning Province cursed Dafa and Dafa practitioners and didn't listen when other people advised him not to do so. Shortly after, he was accidentally electrocuted while working in his own factory. A team leader at a community office on Chengguan Street in Zhuanghe City, Liaoning Province willingly obeyed the evil's order to persecute Dafa and each day took down banners and flyers posted by practitioners to save the world's people. Shortly after, she didn't feel well and in the hospital was confirmed to have a uterine tumor.

(Clearwisdom.net) Amnesty International Canada posted a national call for rescue efforts on the most prominent spot on its web page (http://www.amnesty.ca) aimed at obtaining the release of Mr. Lin Shenli, a prisoner of conscience, a Falun Gong practitioner and the husband of Canadian citizen Ms. Li Jinyu.

Mr. Lin Shenli was illegally sentenced to 18 months of forced labor because of his peaceful appeal for Falun Gong. He was supposed to be released on July 23, 2001; however, his sentence was unreasonably extended for another six months. Officials in Canada were shocked when they heard the news.

The Canada Rescue Lin Shenli Committee suggests that in addition to answering Amnesty International's call to action, kindhearted people could also clarify the truth to Dafeng Forced Labor Camp where Mr. Lin is being illegally detained, to the Shanghai City Police Department and the Shanghai City government. The committee will request the immediate release of Mr. Lin so he can reunite with his wife after over two years of separation.

Today we are gathered here to hold a vigil to remember the 20 Falun Gong practitioners who have lost their lives in the last 22 days (as of January. 11.) because they believe in Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance. They were all tortured to death while under arrest or attack in China. Among them was a man named He Xing-Zong from Hubei Province. He was assaulted on the street in broad daylight and strangled to death by the police just because he was out spreading information about the government's persecution of Falun Gong.

One has to ask how the Chinese police can be such undisguised perpetrators of violence against peaceful and compassionate Falun Gong practitioners. One can clearly see this in Jiang's policy towards Falun Gong practitioners: smear their reputations, ruin their ability to make a living, and destroy their bodies.

At the same time, one can also see that even under such terrorizing persecution, the Falun Gong practitioners are steadfast in their belief in Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance.

Today, more and more people are recognizing and assimilating to Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance. These principles can in truth solve all kinds of human conflicts and catastrophes created by humans. It is sad that in China those people who are willing to follow the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance are met with persecution and mistreatment.

We appeal to you, the representatives of the Chinese people, to make known our wishes to the Chinese government:

Stop the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners immediately!

Give people back their right to practice Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance!

On the afternoon of January 12, the First Central Japan Experience Sharing Conference and hongfa parade were held at the Youth Center of Nagoya. Practitioners from around Japan gathered at the conference and participated in the hongfa parade. The conference started at 1 p.m. and successfully concluded early the next morning.

Practitioners attending the conference sent forth righteous thoughts several times. They shared their experiences on three main topics: studying Fa more, sending forth righteous thoughts and clarifying the truth. They discussed how to improve in these three aspects more deeply, firmly and consciously.

On January 13, the cold winter day turned into a bright sunshiny day that felt like mid-March. Practitioners arrived at the largest park of Nagoya in the early morning and sent forth righteous thoughts three times. In the afternoon at 1 p.m., practitioners held a parade and distributed Dafa flyers to citizens along the parade route.

Two practitioners of Falun Gong stopped in Steinbach last week to draw attention to the persecution of the group's adherents in China.

"There is no freedom in China," said Bill Guan who together with Sylvia Liu is appealing to city councils and citizens across Canada. They pointed to photographs showing people who had been severely tortured for practicing Falun Gong and noted almost 300 had been killed with 100,000 detained and over 20,000 sent to labor camps without trials.

Falun Gong (also known as Falun Dafa) is an ancient practice which teaches mental and physical well-being is possible by adhering to three basic principles-truthfulness, compassion and tolerance -- and through performing five sets of gentle exercises.

Guan is adamant Falun Gong is not a religion but simply a way of life.

"We have no rituals or worship and no membership obligations," he says, pointing out by following the teachings of this ancient philosophy, people become better -- living more upright and harmonious lives and developing a great inner strength that enables them to face life's challenges with peace and compassion.

He notes from his point of view adherents of the "great law" inevitably become more responsible citizens.

Guan says that while Falun Gong has its roots in pre-historic China, it was kept somewhat secret until 1992 when Li Hongzhi brought the teachings to the public. Since that time the movement has grown quickly -- Guan suggests today there are 70 million adherents in China and 30 million in other countries, including Canada.

When the movement gained momentum, Chinese president Jiang Zemin began an immediate crackdown. Guan notes governments and citizens around the world condemn the Chinese government for the escalating persecution.

As one way to raise further awareness, Falun Gong practitioners organized a Global Rescue Walk. In Canada, they are walking from Vancouver to Toronto.

Last week three walkers passed the junction of Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 12 on their lap from Winnipeg to Thunder Bay where they were scheduled to arrive on Friday. Guan and Liu act as spokesmen for the walkers and make arrangements for food and accommodation.

It takes courage to stand up for controversial beliefs in the face of adversity. But, to Seacoast Falun Gong practitioners, it takes more than courage to keep standing after years of persecution. It takes compassion.

"I think they have great compassion to go out," says Kittery resident Mary Byrom of the millions of Chinese Falun Gong practitioners facing persecution by their government. "It affected my heart quality."

Every day Byrom and at least five other Seacoast residents practice the slow exercise techniques of Falun Gong either outside together or in their own homes.

They are not threatened.

They face no persecution.

And yet they not only get up at the break of dawn to practice, they spend untold amounts of time and money traveling locally and abroad to educate people on the truths of Falun Gong and the lies they say the Chinese government is spreading.

"I would see it as good versus evil," says Byrom's husband, Marcus Gale. "What is worth living for? Do we want to give into evil? Unfortunately, (Chinese practitioners) have to suffer for it. Westerners can understand that good has to stand up against evil. Otherwise, what is worth living for?"

Falun Gong, also called Falun Dafa, is a cultivation system for improving the mind, body and spirit. It was first introduced in China in 1992 by Master Li Hongzhi, eventually spreading to over 40 countries with more than 100 million practitioners.

It's core principles are summed up in three words: "Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance."

To Martin Fox of Kittery, Falun Gong has two aspects. "One deals with cultivating Truthfulness, Compassion and Tolerance in daily life and the other aspect involves the slow motion exercises/meditation movement."

There are no religious rituals or worship to Falun Gong. No donations or membership obligations. No racial or cultural boundaries. No political agenda. All of the techniques and principles of Falun Gong are free and available over the internet.

However, millions of Falun Gong practitioners have been threatened, jailed, raped and tortured since President Jiang Zemin of China ordered a crackdown on the practice of Falun Gong in July of 1999. According to the website faluninfo.net, 334 practitioners have been beaten to death in police custody to date.

"More people are practicing Falun Gong than are involved in the [party's name omitted]," Fox says, explaining why the Chinese government views Falun Gong as a [term omitted] and threat.

"It's a system of cultivation that's directly opposite to that of the Chinese government," he adds. "The reason (Falun Gong practitioners) continue is they want the world to know the government controls everything."

"It is state sponsored terrorism," says Gale. "When people look at us they think we're involved in politics or a social cause. We're really just upholding principles. We're not interested in politics."

The close-knit local Falun Gong group was founded by David Li and Ming Liu of Portsmouth, both Beijing natives who moved to this country in 1994.

While studying under a research fellowship in industrial engineering at the University of Michigan, Li heard about Falun Gong and found it consistent with his own beliefs. He started a seminar on it in Michigan and brought the practices to this area when he and Liu moved to Portsmouth in 1997.

"I thought it was the best gift to share with the community," Li says.

"I've always been searching for a higher meaning to life, ever since I was in college 30 years ago," says Gale, who experimented with tai chi and Eastern meditation before finding what he searched for in Falun Gong.

"I was a little skeptical that it was free, but once I learned the movements it was very essential and basic."

As a children's entertainer, Gale says the Falun Gong principles are "very much a part" of his work in the stories and songs he performs.

"It's been a challenge to bring the principles to people in an entertaining way."

His commitment to Falun Gong impressed his wife enough to research it herself.

"He had a radical change in a very short time," Byrom says. "This is the guy who never got out of bed at 6 a.m. I wasn't searching for something, but when I saw this I saw something pure."

Yvonne Marcotte of New Durham was the next domino in line.

"Mary (Byrom) had a class, a self-improvement kind of class," Marcotte says. "She said 'Marcus found something' and it sounded like the real thing."

She went to a nine day lecture and just kept going when she realized the principles were something important to her.

What differentiates Falun Gong from practices like yoga or tai chi are the principles.

"In Falun Gong we have high principles and we use that to guide us in daily life," Li says. "Yoga and tai chi are mostly focused on the physical body."

The more truthful and compassionate you are, the more energy you get, Fox says.

"On the surface it looks like it's a belief system, but it's a transforming process."

He was attracted to Falun Gong by its message to "return to your true self."

"I saw a brochure in Tapei Tokyo restaurant," he says. "I called and ended up speaking to David (Li)."

Fox began reading a book called "Falun Gong" shortly after the government crackdown in 1999.

"It was a little hard to believe that anybody would be against something truthful, compassionate and tolerant."

Fox says the worst problem is how the Chinese Americans have "very effectively been subjected to lies. A lot of us try to validate the truth."

This is done through SOS! Global RescueWalks both here (from Kittery to Portsmouth last summer) and abroad, everywhere from Australia to Turkey.

In November, Marcotte spent two weeks in the Czech and Slovak Republics "to tell people about the truth."

Many people have already formed their opinions about the Falun Gong from their own government or are too intimidated to speak out.

Li also went on a tour of European countries including Iceland, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain to walk on foot as an "ambassador" for the local efforts.

"We met many media and government officials," Li says. "(The people of Europe) don't have as much courage to speak out as Americans. People are confused."

Liu recently returned from a three-city photo exhibition in Russia, detailing visually 130 photos about the Falun Gong persecution.

"Russia is very influenced and under the thumb of China," Liu says.

Even in Chinatowns in this country, some Chinese Americans view Falun Gong from the eyes of their home government and distrust the practice.

Locally, the group have received letters from Maine Governor Angus King, Congressman John Baldacci and Senator Olympia Snowe, all supporting the Falun Gong, the SOS walks and/or House Congressional Resolution 188 "expressing the sense of Congress that the Government of the People's Republic of China should cease its persecution of Falun Gong practitioners."

To enlighten others, Li recently included CD-ROMs about Falun Gong in the New Year's cards he sent out. And Marcotte is working with a group in Boston to create CDs to send to Chinese Americans.

Byrom says the Falun Gong crackdown "is about saving face." If President Zemin were to leave office, she believes the next president coming in would want to make changes to save face, and this would involve ceasing the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners.

"When enough people know the truth, the inevitable will happen," Fox says. "Change will happen of its own accord. People through their own compassion will tell others."

"As Marcus said, we cannot let evil take over the world," Marcotte says. "It's a very idealistic thing, but it's something I believe in."

Clarify the Truth to Stop the Killing

Falun Dafa practitioners in Berlin, Germany held a candlelight vigil on January 12 in front of the Chinese Embassy to protest the intensified persecution of Falun Gong by Jiang's regime that has caused the recent rapid increase in number of practitioners killed. They also asked the Chinese government to immediately release Falun Dafa practitioner Xiong Wei who had studied and worked in Germany.

Falun Dafa practitioners in Denmark will hold a candlelight vigil in the afternoon on Sunday, January 13 in front of the Chinese consulate in Copenhagen to protest the intensified cruel persecution of Falun Gong practitioners by the Chinese government--especially the casual killing of Falun Gong practitioners.

Falun Gong practitioners in Washington D.C. held a peaceful protest on January 11 and 12. The intent is to strongly condemn the recent round of frenzied killings of Falun Gong practitioners in Mainland China by Jiang's criminal regime, as in just the past four days, more than 8 Falun Gong practitioners have been tortured to death.

Channel 36 in New Jersey began broadcasting a special interview with Falun Gong practitioners starting on January 1 at 7:00PM every Monday continuously for one month to introduce people to Falun Gong and to tell the story of the peaceful appeal of 36 western Falun Gong practitioners from 12 countries on Tiananmen Square. Stories of Fa-Rectification Cultivation

Here I want to share my Fa validating experience at a shelter [note: more likely a detention center] in Guangzhou City. I was arrested and sent to a shelter when clarifying the truth in a public park. I was put in solitary confinement. Everyday, I chose an appropriate time to shout to people outside my cell, "Falun Dafa is good!" in addition to clarifying the truth. I did this for two-and-half months and several tens of thousands of people listened to me. Over the period of three months, over a hundred people came in and left the solitary confinement cell, and many of them learned to different extents the truth about Dafa. Later, with Teacher's arrangement, I walked out of this demon's den and again dove into the current of Fa-rectification.

Rectifying the Fa in Chinese Schools

Recently, influenza spread in China. Teachers and students at a school in southwest China fell ill class by class, but one class was spared. In that class only several students got the flu and they recovered within two to three days. The reason is that the head teacher of the class practices Falun Gong. Ever since she began practicing, no one has ever seen her ill. One practitioner benefits people all around her.

A middle school in southwest China held an essay competition to slander Dafa. A non-practitioner student asked her relative about Falun Gong and her relative told her the truth, so she wrote an article that was not related to Falun Gong. Later, her essay won the prize!

When my daughter and friends met in Shenzhen City, a friend from Kunming City said, "Many of us in Kunming know that everything said on CCTV about Falun Gong is untrue. Falun Gong is good."

An elementary school teacher in Yunnan Province saw the TV claiming Falun Gong is bad. She couldn't understand that if it's really bad, then why didn't the government find that out for seven years? Also, why did so many people practice it? Later, she fortunately obtained a copy of Zhuan Falun and she was very shocked after reading it. She said to everyone after she went home, "Now I know everything in Zhuan Falun is very good."

Shortly before New Year's Day, two policemen came to a practitioner's home and attempted to take away a Falun Dafa book. I said to him, "Don't move. Give me the book." The policemen were dumbfounded. I then picked up the book from the floor and left on my bike. From the human's perspective, it was demons against humans whereas from the perspective of Fa, it was humans against divine beings.

A female practitioner was sent to a brainwashing class. As she was determined to remember what Teacher Li said and act as a true practitioner, she did not cooperate with the police and went on a hunger strike. Whatever the police asked her to do, she did the opposite. She walked out of the brainwashing class 14 days later. A few days later, she went to Tiananmen Square in Beijing to appeal for Falun Dafa, and she was arrested and sent to a detention center in Beijing. Again she refused to follow the authorities' orders. The police did not know what to do with her, and she was released 5 days later.

News from China

One hundred and thirty-nine people issued their solemn declarations to renounce what they said and did against Falun Dafa while they were being pressured. They said that it was against their conscience and they would step up their efforts to make up for the damage done to Falun Dafa and to clarify the truth and expose the evils. Some everyday people, after learning the truth, also declared what they said and did in the past against Falun Dafa to be invalid.

The 610 Office [an agency specially created to persecute Falun Gong with absolute power over each level of administration in the Party and all other political and judiciary systems] has taken practitioners into custody and jailed them indefinitely. In the face of brutality, practitioners clarified the truth, refused to cooperate with the police, and went on hunger strike to protest the persecution. On July 23, 2001, the 610 Office sent practitioners Chen Xueqing and Li Jianzhong to the notorious Huangpu Police Station Detoxification Center for further persecution.

Exposing brutalities perpetrated in Hunan province against Falun Dafa practitioners: the police came to practitioners' homes after midnight and arrested them; they extended practitioners' terms indefinitely; practitioners were shocked with electric batons and held in solitary confinement. A female practitioner in her twenties was forced to stand for days, even during the time when she had her menstrual period.

The Public Security Bureau in Baise City, Guangxi Province persecutes Falun Gong practitioners insanely under the supervision of the "610" office. Many practitioners have been arrested, detained, sent to labor camps, and many have been forced to leave home and separate from their families. The head of the Public Security Bureau, Li Hongzhuan, Tan Xueren, the party secretary Ma Sike and other criminal officials were sentenced to prison for protecting the gangsters' community.

The policeman who beat Falun Gong practitioners in Shijiazhuang City Detention Center was punished by law. Li Yong, the head of the First Team was removed from the office. A party secretary in a village in Zanhuang County, Hebei Province cursed Dafa and Master and died of cancer after the harvest season of this year.

Zhang Cuiying held a Chinese Water Color Painting Charity Exhibition for the relief fund for the wildfires in Sydney, Australia. Although there was interference from the Chinese Consulate, the exhibition was held on time on January 10. People from the government and the visitors all highly praised Zhang's compassion and art. The exhibition will continue for 7 days.

On December 16, 2001, practitioners in Australia participated in the celebration of the 100^th Anniversary of Noosa Shire sunshine beach in the rain. Afterwards, practitioners went to the beach to start the celebration of the first Queensland "Falun Dafa Week." They demonstrated the exercises and distributed Dafa materials. The officials at the sunshine beach gave enthusiastic speeches during the celebration.
